Abstract:This paper proposes a method that can be used to synthesize carbon microspheres with controllable sizes, rich amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. The synthesized materials are portrayed by various methods including SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and EDX. The resulting carbon spheres presented an amorphous characteristic, which displayed a broad range in diameter, high degree of sphericity, and smoothness with amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. Pyknotic and smooth silver shells were deposited on carbon spheres by electroless silver plating. Moreover, it could directly reduce Ag+ to Ag in aqueous silver nitrate. These materials can potentially be used as adsorbents for heavy-metal removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Herein, we report a versatile solvent-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) strategy to directly synthesize highly N-doped hierarchically porous structured carbon spheres with a tunable meso-macroporous configuration. The introduction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds is verified to enhance the interfacial interactions between block copolymers, oil droplets, and polyphenols. Moreover, the dominant hydrogen-bond-driven interactions can be systematically manipulated by selecting different cosolvent systems to generate diverse porous structures from the transformation of micellar and precursor co-assembly. Impressively, hierarchically structured meso-macroporous N-doped carbon spheres present simultaneously tunable sphere sizes and mesopores and macropores, ranging from 1.2 μm, 9/50 and 227 nm to 1.0 μm, 40, and 183 nm and 480, 24, and 95 nm. As a demonstration, dendritic-like N-doped hierarchically meso-macroporous carbon spheres manifest excellent enzyme-like activity, which is attributed to the continuous mass transport from the multiordered porosity. The current study provides a new platform for the synthesis of novel well-defined porous materials.
Synergistic Tuning of Microstructure and Morphology in Carbon Molecular Sieve Hollow Fibers for Propylene/Propane Separation

Abstract:Asymmetric carbon molecular sieve (CMS) hollow fiber membranes with tunable micro- and macro-structural morphologies for energy efficient propylene-propane separation are reported here. A sub-glass transition temperature (sub-Tg) thermal oxidative crosslinking strategy enables simultaneous optimization of the intrinsic molecular sieving properties while also reducing the thickness of the CMS "skin" derived from the 6FDA : BPDA/DAM polyimide precursors. Such synergistic tuning of CMS microstructure and macroscopic morphology of CMS hollow fibers enables significantly increased propylene permeance (reaching 186.5 GPU) while maintaining an appealing propylene/propane selectivity of 13.3 for 50/50 propylene/propane mixed gas feeds. Our findings reveal a more refined and versatile tool than available with previous O2-doping pretreatments. The advanced approach here should be broadly useful to other polyimide precursors and diverse gas pairs.

Abstract:Porous carbon spheres with an internal gridded hollow structure and microporous shell have always been attractive as carbon hosts for electrochemical energy storage. Such carbon hosts can limit active species loss and enhance electronic conductivity throughout the entire framework. Herein, a synthesis approach of internal gridded hollow carbon spheres is developed from solid polymer spheres rather than originally gridded polymer spheres under a controlled pyrolysis micro-environment. The crucial point of this approach is the fabrication of a silica fence around solid polymer spheres, under which the free escaping of the pyrolysis gas will be partly impeded, thus offering a reconstitution opportunity for an internal structure of solid polymer spheres. As a result, the interior of carbon spheres is sculptured into a gridded hollow structure with microporous skin. Furthermore, the size and density of carbon-bridge grids can be modulated by altering the crosslinking degree of polymer spheres and varying pyrolysis conditions. Such gridded hollow carbon spheres show good performance as sulfur hosts for Li-S battery.

Abstract:Porous carbon monoliths with defined multi-length scale pore structures, a nitrogen-containing framework, and high mechanical strength were synthesized through a self-assembly of poly(benzoxazine-co-resol) and a carbonization process. Importantly, this synthesis can be easily scaled up to prepare carbon monoliths with identical pore structures. By controlling the reaction conditions, porous carbon monoliths exhibit fully interconnected macroporosity and mesoporosity with cubic Im3m symmetry and can withstand a press pressure of up to 15.6 MPa. The use of amines in the synthesis results in a nitrogen-containing framework of the carbon monolith, as evidenced by the cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR characterization. With such designed structures, the carbon monoliths show outstanding CO2 capture and separation capacities, high selectivity, and facile regeneration at room temperature. At similar to 1 bar, the equilibrium capacities of the monoliths are in the range of 3.3-4.9 mmol g(-1) at 0 degrees C and of 2.6-3.3 mmol g(-1) at 25 degrees C, while the dynamic capacities are in the range of 2.7-4.1 wt % at 25 degrees C using 14% (v/v) CO2 in N-2. The carbon monoliths exhibit high selectivity for the capture of CO2 over N-2 from a CO2/N-2 mixture, with a separation factor ranging from 13 to 28. Meanwhile, they undergo a facile CO2 release in an argon stream at 25 degrees C, indicating a good regeneration capacity.

Abstract:A thiol-functionalized poly (phenylacetylene) has been synthesized and characterized. The disappearance of the characteristic vibrations at 3312 and 776 cm(-1) (C=C-H) and 2106 cm(-1) (C=C), together with the vanishing of the chemical shifts at 3.0 (C=C-H) and the appearance of the chemical shifts at 6.4 (C=C-H) indicate the polymerization of the thiol-containing monomer. The hybrid of thiol-functionalized poly(phenylacetylene) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) showed good solubility in organic solvents. Meanwhile,the wrapping of the polymer chains on MWNTs led to the surface functionalization. By aid of the interactions between thiol groups and zinc cations, ZnO nanoparticles were assembled onto out-shells of the hybrids. These results suggested a novel route to the fabrication of multi-component nanostructures.

Abstract:Mesostructured microspheres formed by aerosol-assisted self-assembly of a gelable block copolymer, poly(3(triethoxysilyl)propyl methaerylate)-block-polystyrene (PTEPM-b-PS), were studied by a combination of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When the copolymer composition was changed, the spheres with different internal patterns, such as onion-like lamella and curved cylinder, were obtained. Through a self-gelation process of PTEPM domains, novel organic/inorganic hybrid spheres with an internal tunable patterned structure were prepared. Since only PTEMP domains were cross-linked, the hybrid spheres could be further disintegrated by dispersion in a good solvent of PS. As a result, novel organic/inorganic hybrid nano-objects such as arched plates and cylinders were prepared.

Abstract:Onion-like carbon nanospheres have been synthesized through ultrasound treatment on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) material in deion water. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and electron diffraction (ED) analyses show that these nanospheres are composed of disordered lattice lines of graphene sheets and the size of them ranges from about 10 nm to 200 nm. In addition, to explain the growth mechanism of carbon nanospberes, one possible two-stage model was proposed of nucleus formation and "rolling snowball" growth of carbon nanospheres. Abstract:In this communication, we propose a template approach toward synthesis of carbon hollow spheres by direct carbonization of highly crosslinked sulfonated polystyrene gel hollow spheres (sPS). The sulfonic acid group can facilitate carbonization. Moreover, the acid group can also induce a favorable growth of other materials within the sPS gel-forming carbon-based composite shell such as bi-continuous C/SiO2 and their derivative ceramic SiC. Abstract:Here we report a novel interface tension-induced shrinkage approach to realize the synthesis of monodispersed asymmetrical mesoporous carbon nanohemispheres. We demonstrate that the products exhibit very uniform hemispherical morphology (130 × 60 nm) and are full of ordered mesopores, endowing them high surface areas and uniform pore sizes. These monodispersed mesoporous carbon hemispheres display excellent dispersibility in water for a long period without any aggregation. Moreover, a brand new feature of the mesoporous carbon materials has been observed for the first time: these monodispersed mesoporous carbon hemispheres show excellent thermal generation property under a NIR irradiation.

Abstract:This study presents a facile and general method for fabrication of carbon spheres with tunable morphologies based on the sol-gel reaction of a novel polymeric carbon precursor. The carbon precursor was fabricated by the synthesis of resole, a low-molecular weight polymer of phenol and formaldehyde, and then the modification with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEG). By turning the modification degree of resole with different amounts of PEG and the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of this precursor, carbon spheres with various morphologies, including regular spheres, hollow spheres of different pore sizes, and raspberry- and peanut-like spheres, were produced easily. This should be attributed to the condensation, self-assembly, and phase separation of the new polymeric carbon precursors during the sol-gel process.

Abstract:Rationally and efficiently controlling chemical composition, microstructure, and morphology of carbon nanomaterials plays a crucial role in significantly enhancing their functional properties and expending their applications. In this work, a novel strategy for simultaneously controlling these structural parameters was developed on the base of a multifunctional precursor approach, in which the precursor not only serves as carbon source and structure-directing agent, but also contains two heteroatom doping sites. As exemplified by using pyrrole-terminated ionic liquid surfactant as such precursor, in conjunction with sol-gel chemistry this strategy allows for efficiently producing well-defined hollow carbon spheres with controlled microstructure and chemical compositions. Remarkably, the dual-doping sites in confined silica channels provide an exciting opportunity and flexibility to access various doped carbons through simply anion exchange or altering the used oxidative polymerization agent, especially the multispecies codoped materials by combination of the two doping modes. All the results indicate that the described strategy may open up a new avenue for efficiently synthesizing functional carbon materials with highly controllable capability.

Abstract:In this work, the ultra-uniform amidated nitrogen (N)-doped carbon sphere (ANG-Cs) adsorbent with different pore sizes and modified by kinds of functional groups was developed for efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption, simultaneously obtaining the excellent selectivity of CO2/N2 from the simulated ultra-low emission flue gas. We fabricated the uniformly monodispersed glucose-based carbon microspheres via a creative ethanol-assisted hydrothermal method, and also systematically explored and discussed the relationship between porous structures functional alkaline-containing N-groups and CO2 adsorption capacity. Impressively, the pore size distribution arranged from micro- to mesoporous region along with large surface area of 1217 m2/g, that is benefit for the adsorption of small acid gas like CO2. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of the optimized ANG-Cs reached 4.89 mmol/g under 298 K and 1 bar, and the predictable adsorption selectivity of pure CO2/N2 was as high as 43 in the simulated ultra-low emission flue gas. More importantly, when compared with some advanced MOF-based adsorbents, ANG-Cs not only owns similar CO2 adsorption performance, but also keeps higher water resistance, chemical stability and lower cost. Therefore, this promising ANG-Cs with green synthesis for the controllable CO2 adsorption and separation pushes the progress in industry application of ultra-low emission gas.

Abstract:Monodisperse micron-grade carbon spheres (MCSs) (1.1-7.1 mu m) were prepared via the hydrothermal carbonization of maltose with the addition of polyacrylic and inorganic acid. The synthesis could be accomplished in 3 h and still take effect at a large maltose concentration (similar to 800 g/L) or in tenfold enlarged experiments. This strategy was also applicable to form MCSs with good monodispersity for various carbohydrates including glucose, sucrose, soluble starch, xylan, glucan and barley starch. The simple H2O2 oxidation and calcination under static air atmosphere could introduce good surface meso-and macroporosity (average pore size of 4.2 nm, 79% of total pore volume) onto MCSs. The covalent grafting of porous MCSs with hyperbranched quaternized polymers was implemented in aqueous solution, via amidation with polyvinylamine and following amine-epoxy addition reaction with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. As ion chromatographic stationary phases, the modified porous MCSs rapidly accomplished the baseline separation of typical inorganic anions and carbohydrates with high efficiency and satisfactory stability.

Abstract:Porous carbon particles have been widely used in many areas including energy storage. Production of carbon microspheres in an efficient, controlled, and low-cost manner, however, is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a microfluidic approach to generate porous carbon particles using inexpensive precursors and show that the size of the particle and pores can be tuned by adjusting the deionized (DI) water content in droplets and preheating temperature. The developed strategy offers an effective approach to control the production of porous carbon spheres with a well-defined diameter, narrow size distribution and pore size.

Abstract:It is a long-standing dream to fabricate micron-sized inorganic spheres that have nanocompartments enclosed by a permeable shell and thus resemble the shape of natural cells. Here, we demonstrate a novel synthesis protocol to attain this goal for the first time. This protocol unprecedentedly harnesses interfacial sol–gel growth around Pickering droplets coupled with a surfactant assembly-directed sol–gel process within droplet-confined spaces. This protocol enables us to fabricate novel mesoporous silica microspheres (MSMs) with tunable interior architectures, such as hollow MSMs, hollow nanosphere-containing MSMs (hn@MSMs), nanosphere-containing MSMs (n@MSMs), yolk-shell-structured MSMs (y@MSMs) and “solid” MSMs. The obtained multi-compartmentalized MSMs exhibit good permeability to external molecules and good mechanical strength against stress. Moreover, their structural features benefit practical applications of CO2 capture and enzymatic reactions. Due to the high dispersion of tetraethylenepentamine and enzyme in the spatially separated nanocompartments, the developed CO2 sorbents and catalysts exhibit significantly enhanced CO2 capture efficiency and catalysis efficiency. Meanwhile, owing to the encapsulation of these nanocompartments inside the hollow micron-sized spheres, these CO2 sorbents and catalysts can be packed directly in fixed-bed reactors, which is unattainable for nanoparticle materials.

Abstract:Carbon nanospheres and their derived superstructures have attracted increasing attention due to their widespread applications ranging from electrochemistry to catalysis. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve mass production of biomass-derived monodisperse carbon nanospheres with a diameter <400 nm and their derived superstructures with a controlled size. Here, monodisperse and uniform nanospheres ranging from 120 to 360 nm were synthesized with the introduction of a small amount of poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) sodium salt (PSSMA) to the hydrothermal system. In addition, spherical superstructures constructed of nanospheres with an adjustable size from 1.4 to 5.2 m were fabricated in the presence of both PSSMA and hydrochloric acid. Moreover, carbonized carbon superstructures showed good performance as supports for catalytic hydrogenation. These findings may open up a new avenue for designing increasingly complex functional biomass-derived materials.

Abstract:Large-scale production of pure carbon spheres, with diameters from 50nm to 1μm, has been achieved via direct pyrolysis of a wide range of hydrocarbons, including styrene, toluene, benzene, hexane, cyclohexane and ethene, in the absence of catalyst. Specific systematic studies using styrene as the feedstock indicate that the sizes of the resulting of carbon nanospheres can be controlled quite well by adjusting the experimental conditions. The resulting materials have been fully characterized using SEM, TEM, AFM, HRTEM, EDX, elemental analysis, density measurement, XPS, FTIR, XRD, Raman, and TGA. The results show that the spheres, which are 99% carbon, consist of concentric incompletely closed graphitic shells. The dangling bonds on the edges of the shells result in high chemical reactivity.
