Abstract:Conducting polymers are promising components for flexible energy conversion and storage systems, especially in supercapacitors, due to their high mechanical stability and pseudocapacitive nature. However, their sluggish nature broadens their application in formulating composite electrodes with carbonaceous materials and metal oxides. In addition to these approaches, the present work focuses on studying the effect of an anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS) on enhancing the electrochemical energy storage performance of a polymer ternary hybrid composite, polypyrrole/rGO/Co 3 O 4 (PySGC) synthesized through the one-pot hydrothermal method. It analyzes their feasibility as electrodes in symmetric supercapacitors. Even though the ternary combinations are trailed, the effect of a surfactant has not yet been studied. The study highlights that incorporation of surfactant improved the density of active sites, which enhanced the electrochemical performance of the resultant composite. After SLS incorporation, the specific capacitance enhanced from 1206 to 1663 F g −1 at 10 mV s −1 . Also, the fabricated symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) delivered superior specific capacitance as high as 507 F g −1 with a specific energy of 22.5 Wh kg −1 and a specific power of 369.2 W kg −1 at 1 A g −1 . After 20,000 continuous CD cycles, the Coulombic efficiency of the fabricated SSC is 99%, ensuring its potential candidature in low-cost energy storage applications.
