Abstract:In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.

Abstract:We study analogies between the rational integers on the real line and the Gaussian integers on other lines in the complex plane. This includes a Gaussian analog of Bertrands Postulate, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, and the periodicity of divisibility. We also computationally investigate the distribution of Gaussian primes along these lines and leave the reader with several open problems.

Abstract:Let $-D$ be a fundamental discriminant. We express the number of representations of an integer by a positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ with an odd class number $h(-D)$ as a rational linear expression involving the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac{-D}{.}\right)$ and the Fourier coefficients of certain cusp forms. We prove these cusp forms have eta quotient representations only if $D=23$. This provides, using theta functions, a generalization of a result of F. van der Blij from 1952 for binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-23$ to the case of forms of discriminant $-D$ with odd $h(-D)$. We also study the eta quotient representations of some related theta functions.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Optimal Representations of Gaussian and Eisenstein Integers using digit sets closed under multiplication

Abstract:We study two positional numeration systems which are known for allowing very efficient addition and multiplication of complex numbers. The first one uses the base $\beta = \imath - 1$ and the digit set $\mathcal{D} = \{ 0, \pm 1, \pm \imath \}$. In this numeration system, every non-zero Gaussian integer~$x$ has an infinite number of representations. We focus on optimal representations of~$x$ -- i.e., representations with minimal possible number of non-zero digits. One of the optimal representations of~$x$ has the so-called $3$-non-adjacent form ($3$-NAF). We provide an upper bound on the number of distinct optimal representations of~$x$, depending on the number of non-zero digits in the $3$-NAF of~$x$. We also characterize the Gaussian integers for which the upper bound is attained. The same questions are answered also for the second numeration system with base $\beta = \omega - 1$ and digit set $\mathcal{D} = \{ 0, \pm 1, \pm \omega, \pm \omega^2 \}$, where $\omega = \exp(2\pi\imath / 3)$. In this system, every Eisenstein integer has a $2$-NAF, which is optimal. This paper can be understood as an analogy to the result of Grabner and Heuberger obtained for the signed binary numeration system, using base $\beta = 2$ and digit set $\mathcal{D} = \{0, \pm 1\}$.

Abstract:Recently, Donoso, Le, Moreira and Sun studied the asymptotic behavior of the averages of completely multiplicative functions over the Gaussian integers. They derived Wirsing's theorem for Gaussian integers, answered a question of Frantzikinakis and Host for sum of two squares, and obtained a variant of a theorem of Bergelson and Richter on ergodic averages along the number of prime factors of integers. In this paper, we will show the analogue of these results for co-prime integer pairs. Moreover, building on Frantzikinakis and Host's results, we obtain some convergences on the multilinear averages of multiplicative functions over primitive lattice points.

Abstract:In this article, we have studied transformation formulas of zeta function at odd integers over an arbitrary number field which in turn generalizes Ramanujan's identity for the Riemann zeta function. The above transformation leads to a new number field extension of Eisenstein series, which satisfies the transformation $z \mapsto -1/z$ like an integral weight modular form over SL$_2(\Z)$. The results provide number of important applications, which are important in studying the behaviour of odd zeta values as well as Lambert series in an arbitrary number field.

Abstract:Suppose that $p$ is an odd prime and $g>1$ is a primitive root modulo $p$. Let $M$ be a number field contained in the $p$-th cyclotomic field. Girstmair found a surprising relation between the relative class number of $M$ and the digits of $1/p$ in base $g$. In this paper, we consider an analogue of Girstmair's formula in function fields. Suppose that $P \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is monic irreducible and $G \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a primitive root modulo $P$. Let $L$ be an extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ contained in the $P$-th cyclotomic function field. The goal of this paper is to give relations between the plus and minus parts of the divisor class number of $L$ and the digits of $1/P$ in base $G$.

In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime, and $N$ be a positive integer not divisible by $p$. Denote by ${\rm ord}_N(p)$ the multiplicative order of $p$ modulo $N$. Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ represent the finite field of order $q=p^{{\rm ord}_N(p)}$. For $a, b\in\mathbb{F}_q$, we define a binomial exponential sum by $$S_N(a,b):=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q\setminus\{0\}}\chi(ax^{\frac{q-1}{N}}+bx),$$ where $\chi$ is the canonical additive character of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper, we provide an explicit evaluation of $S_{N}(a,b)$ for any odd prime $p$ and any $N$ satisfying ${\rm ord}_{N}(p)=\phi(N)$. Our elementary and direct approach allows for the construction of a class of ternary linear codes, with their exact weight distribution determined. Furthermore, we prove that the dual codes achieve optimality with respect to the sphere packing bound, thereby generalizing previous results from even to odd characteristic fields.

On the Sum of Squarefree Integers and a Power of Two

Abstract:Erdos conjectured that every odd number greater than one can be expressed as the sum of a squarefree number and a power of two. Subsequently, Odlyzko and McCranie provided numerical verification of this conjecture up to $10^7$ and $1.4\cdot 10^9$. In this paper, we extend the verification to all odd integers up to $2^{50}$, thereby improving the previous bound by a factor of more than $8\cdot 10^5$. Our approach employs a highly parallelized algorithm implemented on a GPU, which significantly accelerates the process. We provide details of the algorithm and present novel heuristic computations and numerical findings, including the smallest odd numbers $<2^{50}$ that require a higher power of two as all smaller ones in their representation.

Abstract:Zeckendorf's Theorem states that any positive integer can be written uniquely as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. We consider higher-dimensional lattice analogues, where a legal decomposition of a number $n$ is a collection of lattice points such that each point is included at most once. Once a point is chosen, all future points must have strictly smaller coordinates, and the pairwise sum of the values of the points chosen equals $n$. We prove that the distribution of the number of summands in these lattice decompositions converges to a Gaussian distribution in any number of dimensions. As an immediate corollary we obtain a new proof for the asymptotic number of certain lattice paths.

Abstract:We call an order $O$ in a quadratic field $K$ odd (resp. even) if its discriminant is an odd (resp. even) integer. We call an elliptic curve $E$ over the field $C$ of complex numbers with CM odd (resp. even) if its endomorphism ring $End(E)$ is an odd (resp. even) order in the corresponding imaginary quadratic field. Suppose that $j(E)$ is a real number and let us consider the set $J(R,E)$ of all $j(E')$ where $E'$ is any elliptic curve that enjoys the following properties. 1) $E'$ is isogenous to $E$; 2) $j(E')$ is a real number; 3) $E'$ has the same parity as $E$. We prove that the closure of $J(R,E)$ in the set $R$ of real numbers is the closed semi-infinite interval $(-\infty,1728]$ (resp. the whole $R$) if $E$ is odd (resp. even). This paper was inspired by a question of Jean-Louis Colliot-Thélène and Alena Pirutka about the distribution of $j$-invariants of certain elliptic curves of CM type.

A modular framework for generalized Hurwitz class numbers II

Abstract:In a recent preprint, we constructed a sesquiharmonic Maass form $\mathcal{G}$ of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ and level $4N$ with $N$ odd and squarefree. Extending seminal work by Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth, $\mathcal{G}$ maps to Zagier's non-holomorphic Eisenstein series and a linear combination of Pei and Wang's generalized Cohen--Eisenstein series under the Bruinier--Funke operator $\xi_{\frac{1}{2}}$. In this paper, we realize $\mathcal{G}$ as the output of a regularized Siegel theta lift of $1$ whenever $N=p$ is an odd prime building on more general work by Bruinier, Funke and Imamoglu. In addition, we supply the computation of the square-indexed Fourier coefficients of $\mathcal{G}$. This yields explicit identities between the Fourier coefficients of $\mathcal{G}$ and all quadratic traces of $1$. Furthermore, we evaluate the Millson theta lift of $1$ and consider spectral deformations of $1$.
