Abstract:The best polynomial approximation is closely related to the Ditzian–Totik modulus of smoothness. In 1988, Z. Ditzian and V. Totik gave some equivalences between them and the class of Besov-type spacesBα,spwith 1≤p≤∞ and 1≤s≤∞. We extend these equivalences to the similar Besov-type spaces with 0<s<1. We also give some new equivalences by means of the behavior of best polynomial approximation.

Abstract:Approximation and some other basic properties of various linear and nonlinear operators are potentially useful in many different areas of researches in the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences. Motivated essentially by this aspect of approximation theory, our present study systematically investigates the approximation and other associated properties of a class of the Szász-Mirakjan-type operators, which are introduced here by using an extension of the familiar Beta function. We propose to establish moments of these extended Szász-Mirakjan Beta-type operators and estimate various convergence results with the help of the second modulus of smoothness and the classical modulus of continuity. We also investigate convergence via functions which belong to the Lipschitz class. Finally, we prove a Voronovskaja-type approximation theorem for the extended Szász-Mirakjan Beta-type operators.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new family of Bernstein-type exponential polynomials on the hypercube $[0, 1]^d$ and study their approximation properties. Such operators fix a multidimensional version of the exponential function and its square. In particular, we prove uniform convergence, by means of two different approaches, as well as a quantitative estimate of the order of approximation in terms of the modulus of continuity of the approximated function.

Abstract:This paper aims at approximation of functions by linear integral operators on variable exponent spaces associated with a general exponent function on a domain of a Euclidean space. Under a log-Hölder continuity assumption of the exponent function, we present quantitative estimates for the approximation and solve an open problem raised in our earlier work. As applications of our key estimates, we provide high orders of approximation by quasi-interpolation type and linear combinations of Bernstein type integral operators on variable exponent spaces. We also introduce K-functionals and moduli of smoothness on variable exponent spaces and discuss their relationships and applications.

Abstract:This paper deals with the approximations of the functions by generalized Durrmeyer operators of Szász–Mirakjan, which are linear positive operators. Several approximation results are presented well, and we estimate the approximation properties along with the order of approximation and the convergence theorem of the proposed operators. For an explicit explanation of the operators, we determine the properties using the weight function. A quantitative approach is discussed for the operators; quantitative Voronovskaya type and Grüss type theorems are established, showing the operators' more efficient work. We investigate the A ‐statistical convergence properties for the said operators, including the rate of approximation in a statistical sense. An important property for the rate of convergence of the operators is obtained in terms of the function with a derivative of the bounded variation. At last, the graphical representations and numerical analysis are discussed and shown to support our theoretical findings.

Abstract:Studying the approximation properties of a certain Riesz–Zygmund sum of Fourier–Chebyshev rational integral operators with constraints on the number of geometrically distinct poles, we obtain an integral expression of the operators. We find upper bounds for pointwise and uniform approximations to the function with on the segment , an asymptotic expression for the majorant of uniform approximations, and the optimal values of the parameter of the approximant providing the greatest decrease rate of the majorant. We separately study the approximation properties of the Riesz–Zygmund sums for Fourier–Chebyshev polynomial series, establish an asymptotic expression for the Lebesgue constants, and estimate approximations to and as well as pointwise and uniform approximations to the function with .

Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

Abstract:The paper deals with two fundamental types of trigonometric polynomials and splines on uniform grids, which allow us to construct interpolation approximations that depend linearly on the values of the interpolated function. Fundamental on the same grids are trigonometric LS polynomials and LS splines, which allow us to construct the approximation of functions by the least squares method and also depend linearly on the values of the approximate function. Trigonometric splines were considered as splines with polynomial analogues in some cases. The material is illustrated in graphs. The considered fundamental trigonometric polynomials and splines can be recommended for use in many problems related to approximation of functions, in particular, mathematical modeling of signals and processes.

Abstract:This is an expository paper on approximating functions from general Hilbert or Banach spaces in the worst case, average case and randomized settings with error measured in the $L_p$ sense. We define the power function as the ratio between the best rate of convergence of algorithms that use function values over the best rate of convergence of algorithms that use arbitrary linear functionals for a worst possible Hilbert or Banach space for which the problem of approximating functions is well defined. Obviously, the power function takes values at most one. If these values are one or close to one than the power of function values is the same or almost the same as the power of arbitrary linear functionals. We summarize and supply a few new estimates on the power function. We also indicate eight open problems related to the power function since this function has not yet been studied for many cases. We believe that the open problems will be of interest to a general audience of mathematicians.

Our results improve and generalize various results of S.M. Shah [5], M.N. Seremeta [4], Kapoor and Nautiyal [2], Vakarchuk [9], Vakarchuk and Zhir [10], Winiarski ([11],[12]). In this way we summarize and unify the work which has been done on this subject to-date.

Abstract:The methods of approximation, regularization and smoothing of trigonometric interpolation splines are considered in the paper. It is shown that trigonometric splines can be considered from two points of view - as a trigonometric Fourier series and as discrete trigonometric Fourier series according to certain systems of functions that are smoothness carriers. It is argued that with approximation and smoothing of trigonometric splines it is expedient to consider as discrete rows, since their differential properties are stored.

Abstract:We consider the general theoretical problem of ultraviolet light from old stellar populations (t > 2 Gyr), and the interpretation of galaxy spectra at short wavelengths (lamda < 3200A) The sources believed to be responsible for the observed `ultraviolet upturn phenomenon' (UVX) are Post-AGB (P-AGB), extreme horizontal branch (EHB) and AGB-Manque (AGBM) stars. The production of EHB stars depends on mass loss on the red giant branch, which is poorly understood, making the far-UV flux problematical as an indicator of the gross properties, such as the age, of a given galaxy. We discuss the current state of the comparison between theory and observation for the UVX phenomenon, and revisit the interpretation of the well-known UVX-Mg2 correlation. In particular, we draw attention to the fact that the UVX appears not to be correlated with indices that measure the iron abundance, which has implications for models that explain the UV-Mg2 correlation as an abundance-driven effect. Finally, we note the potential utility of ultraviolet observations in distinguishing age and metallicity from galaxy spectral energy distributions.

Abstract:This article contributes to the new summation of Szász operators with the help of Appell polynomials of class $A^{2}$. We verified Bohman-Korovkin's theorem and prove the convergence results like Lipschitz-type space, Voronvaskaja-type asymptotic formula, and modulus of continuity using the given operators. Furthermore, we have shown the weighted modulus of continuity and the derivative of bounded variation.

This problem has important applications in several areas of numerical analysis, complexity theory, quantum algorithms, etc. The one, most relevant for us, is the amplification of approximation method: it allows to construct approximations of higher degree M and better accuracy from the approximations of degree m .

Abstract:Let $\theta\in\mathbb{R}^d$. We associate three objects to each approximation $(p,q)\in \mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{N}$ of $\theta$: the projection of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ to the hyperplane of the first $d$ coordinates along the approximating vector $(p,q)$; the displacement vector $(p - q\theta)$; and the residue classes of the components of the $(d + 1)$-tuple $(p, q)$ modulo all primes. All of these have been studied in connection with Diophantine approximation problems. We consider the asymptotic distribution of all of these quantities, properly rescaled, as $(p, q)$ ranges over the best approximants and $\epsilon$-approximants of $\theta$, and describe limiting measures on the relevant spaces, which hold for Lebesgue a.e. $\theta$. We also consider a similar problem for vectors $\theta$ whose components, together with 1, span a totally real number field of degree $d+1$. Our technique involve recasting the problem as an equidistribution problem for a cross-section of a one-parameter flow on an adelic space, which is a fibration over the space of $(d + 1)$-dimensional lattices. Our results generalize results of many previous authors, to higher dimensions and to joint equidistribution.

Abstract:We obtain approximation results for general positive linear operators satisfying mild conditions, when acting on discontinuous functions and absolutely continuous functions having discontinuous derivatives. The upper bounds, given in terms of a local first modulus of continuity, are best possible, in the sense that we can construct particular sequences of operators attaining them. When applied to functions of bounded variation or absolutely continuous functions having derivatives of bounded variation, these upper bounds are better and simpler to compute than the usual total variation bounds. The particular case of the Bernstein polynomials is thoroughly discussed. We use a probabilistic approach based on representations of such operators in terms of expectations of random variables.
