Abstract:The present author's essay "Narrative Text and Ideology"takes issue with previous interpretations of Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour".That essay has been challenged by a recent essay entitled "Gender Politics or Marriage Bondage".This challenge has led the present author to consider further the relation between Chopin's story and some important aspects of literary interpretation,including(1) how interpretive frameworks predetermine reading;(2)the relation between the themes of a text and those of related texts;and(3)the relation between a literary work and its author as well as cultural context.

Abstract:The Story of an Hour as one of Kate Chopin’s classic masterpieces, has always been regarded as a purely feminist work that authentically indicates the awakening of women’s consciousness of freedom under the oppression of patriarchal politics. Since Halliday proposed Systemic Functional Grammar and the three metafunctions of language, transitivity has been widely employed in the interpretation of literary works. The present study focuses on the vicissitude of the protagonist Mrs. Mallard’s mental status through the transitivity analysis as a useful tool and the stylistic features of the text itself as well to explore the hidden theme which has been neglected, and concludes that this classic work is kidnapped by feminist criticism. It satirizes the protagonist’s pathological emotional state of pursuing the absolute freedom in marriage.

Abstract:This paper is a psychoanalytic feminist critique to Kate Chopin's "The Story of an hour". The paper is qualitative descriptive in nature and employes textual evaluation and close reading strategies. The paper goals to explore the topics of repression, language, and woman subjectivity in the quick story via utilizing the theoretical framework of Luce Irigaray. Irigaray’s theory reviews patriarchal language and its position in shaping and repressing female identity, imparting a completely unique perspective on Chopin’s narrative. The modern studies paper analyzes how Chopin’s use of language displays the repression of the protagonist, Louise Mallard, and examines her short moment of liberation as a disruption of patriarchal discourse. This research gives a new interpretation of Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" contributing to feminist literary criticism and psychoanalytic concept via making use of Irigaray’s psychoanalytic feminist ideas. The findings reveal that language functions as each a mechanism of repression and a capacity road for reclaiming female subjectivity within a patriarchal framework. The paper looks at insights into the complicated relationships among repression, language, and lady autonomy inspire further exploration of psychoanalytic feminism in literature, in particular in relation to different works by using Kate Chopin and beyond.

Abstract:This article defines and discusses a type of irony that has eluded existing classifications, namely, "context-determined irony." Although existing types of irony whether called "verbal" or "situational" or modified by some other terms - are in varying degrees related to context, none of them is really context-determined. Compared with verbal or situational irony, "context-determined irony" generates more textual tension and semantic density due to the co-existence of the conventionally positive meaning and the contextually determined ironic meaning. It is revealed that such irony implicitly permeates Kate Chopin "The Story of an Hour" (1894), a textual analysis that is backed tip by intertextual and extratextual considerations.

Abstract:The narrative irony, a basic way of ironical discourse, aims at revealing the real intention of writ- ings through the conflict of two opposites. The artistic qualities of the narrative irony in contemporary Chinese fiction are clearly discernible from the following four perspectives: (1) the irony of bantering, which makes ironic significance through the similarity of the linguistic code on the surface level and the disparity of that code in the deep level between the bantering text and the maternal text; (2) the irony of tone, which produces ironic effect through the disagreement between the tone and the content of narration and the expression of intention; (3) the irony of discourse, which creates ironic meaning by abusing the pragmatic rules of discourse; and (4) the irony of view - point, which forms the ironic implication through the difference between the unique angle and the habitual visual angle.

Abstract:Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women (1868) is a timeless piece of writing about four sisters living in the late 19th-century Concord in America. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy who, albeit raised within the boundaries of the same social setting, represent different facets of womanhood. Whereas Meg displays a traditional model of femininity from that time, Jo may be viewed as a rebellious tomboy combining both male and female features within her. Amy stands for artistically gifted women, while Beth exhibits the transcendent ideal of womanhood, which cannot be achieved. Since the types of femininity they represent differ, they are analysed separately to then be juxtaposed to highlight the differences between them. This paper proposes the analysis of the four sisters with respect to different facets of femininity they display. It uses intertextual practice to show the resemblance between the fates of the March girls and Alcott’s life. The comparative analysis proves that there is no universal answer to the question of what it means to be a woman as there are countless feminine types, which may partly overlap. By creating four March sisters, the representatives of distinct types of femininities, Alcott proves that every female is allowed to offer her own definition of femininity, depending on the ideals she represents.

"The Joy Luck Club" tells the story of two generations of mothers and daughters, and expresses feminist thoughts in a concentrated way. In the study of feminist theory, there is a long-standing controversial question, that is, whether there is an inherent female language expression. Feminist perspective is a branch of feminist narrative literature, which is mainly used to examine women's subjective consciousness, reflect the oppression and influence of male chauvinism on women, and at the same time expose the inequality in reality and sublimate their feminist thoughts through female perspective. Abstract:Women and nature are same in various ways due to their biological status, reproductive role, and discrimination. Ecological feminism is an organic combination of feminist and ecological thoughts that has been present in various forms from the start of feminism in the nineteenth century, articulated through the work of women gardeners, botanists, animal welfare advocates, etc. Ecofeminism clearly reveals the oppressive structure in the relationship between man and nature, and between humans, enable us to establish a new type of equal relationship between man and nature and between man and man. Hence, ecofeminism is one of theoretical and practical way to resolve environmental problems. The famous female writer Kate Chopin presented audience with a sense of feminism and nature, and criticized patriarchal oppression of women through clever metaphors. People and nature should belong to a whole, which is a relationship of mutual harmony and coexistence. This paper uses the literature research method and the theory-to-practice method, starting from a short story, proposes the application of ecofeminism in literature, and explain the deep meaning of ecofeminism and its instruction role in environmental law. This study indicates the use of ecofeminism in literature work and showed that ecofeminism has instructional effect on the environmental law.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Despite extensive theoretical and critical attention paid to focalization, no effort has been made to discuss how one mode of focalization simultaneously helps convey two contrastive kinds of irony. This is ascribable to three factors. First, such a phenomenon is not often seen. Second, if it occurs, it would take place at once in relation to the overt progression and to a covert progression, but critical attention has not extended to the latter. Third, investigations of both focalization and irony have not yet considered their taking on contrastive functions along different thematic trajectories. This essay explores this previously neglected phenomenon with the illustration of Katherine Mansfield’s “A Dill Pickle,” a narrative focusing on the relationship between a man and a woman. The essay reveals that the woman’s focalization conveys irony not only at the male protagonist in the plot-based overt progression but also at the woman herself in a paralleling covert progression.

The book Study on the Irony Narrative in French Contemporary Novels from the Perspective of Cultural Criticism focuses on this issue. It ponders, from the perspective of existence, the relation between irony and social existence, irony and authenticity, irony and writing in French contemporary novels. The study firstly examines how contemporary French irony literature presents the relationship between the individual and society, how irony writers criticize the various disadvantages of contemporary society, and how individuals counteract the current standards through irony. At the same time, the book intervenes in the philosophical dimension of irony, explores how individuals lead to an authentic existence through irony, explores the truth and meaning of existence, and examines, from perspectives of metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics, the exposition of irony in the history of Western thought and its inheritance and change in contemporary literature. Finally, taking the existence of irony on the text level as the object of reflection, the role of irony in narrative and what is the language of irony are discussed.

Abstract:Critics tend to form a somewhat fixed interpretive frame of an author, especially concerning the author's ideological stance. Such an interpretive frame often leads in varying degrees to the neglect of the difference in stance among works by the same author. Many critics, bound by the interpretive frame that sees Kate Chopin as a progressive writer, take Diseree's Baby as a progressive work against racial and patriarchal oppression. A thorough analysis of the structure of the narrative, however, reveals that in the subtext, racial politics in the opposite direction predominates and to a great extent subverts or substitutes the racial and gender politics in the surface text. In order to gain a better understanding of the subtext, it is necessary not only to carry out a careful and deep-going analysis of the narrative structure, but also to pay attention to the relation between the implied author and the real author, as well as that among the different implied authors created by the same author in socio-historical context.

Abstract:Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio is one of the brilliant classical Chinese short stories in which females are described from the male perspective. The work presents diverse images of females who are not male private property or accessories any longer. As daughters, wives and mothers, they express the strong sense of feminism in a patriarchal society. The paper explores the images of five typical females from daughterhood, wifehood and motherhood based on Pu Songling’s description. Abstract:The most concerned question is the sexual difference in the narration of fiction.A new methodology is practiced in the essay,which is the dual research supported by the narrative theory and gender study.There are three aspects analyzed based on the two short stories.One is accomplished by a female writer and the other is by a male novelist.The sexual difference shows different sexual consciousness in the composing,and the different description about the sex in the plots expresses different attitude and imagination.Finally,the style difference,which exists in the very endings,could be summed up for the many effects caused by the sexual difference.
