Abstract:The present study investigates the impact of thermal aging of synthetic ester-impregnated pressboard (SEIP) on surface discharge activity under AC, DC and standard lightning impulse voltages (SLIV), adopting UHF technique and by fluorescent fiber sensor technique. UHF and fluorescent fiber technique measured surface discharge inception voltage with SEIP and found nearly the same. The fluorescent fiber sensor effectively detected surface discharge inception under standard lightning impulse voltage. Under SLIV, aged SEIP showed more intense surface discharge activity at lower voltages, indicating a deterioration in insulation properties. Surface potential decay analysis revealed that thermal aging of SEIP material increases the mean lifetime of charges on its surface, indicating a higher concentration of trapped charges with a reduced decay rate. A shift toward higher trap energy levels with thermally aged SEIP specimens signifies the formation of deeper traps and a greater tendency for charge accumulation. Also, it is observed that a linear relationship exists between potential decay time constant and trap density. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyses indicate that aged SEIP shows increased carbonization and copper deposition. A significant rise in plasma temperature and electron density is observed with thermally aged SEIP material. Thermography study shows that thermal aging increases hot spot temperatures and expands the hot spot area by 30% by 1000 h.
