Abstract:With the continuous increase of electronic products, there is an urgent need to effectively recover gold from e-waste and other secondary resources other than the original mine. Here, hypercross-linking and polyamine-functionalized porous organic polymers (Pc-POSS-POP) were designed and facially synthesized based on multiple azo-coupling polymerizations between 2,9,16,23-tetraaminophthalocyanine (H2Pc(NH2)4) and octa(aminophenyl)-t8-silsesquioxane (OAPS) for the first time. The reaction requires no metal as a catalyst, thereby benefiting the purification of the product and the industrial scalability. Pc-POSS-POPs possess a hypercross-linking structure, highly conjugated frameworks, nitrogen-rich active sites, and extensively visible and near-infrared light absorption, which was utilized as an absorbent to retrieve Au (III). The results demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs have a high adsorption capacity (862.07 mg g-1) and a rapid adsorption rate toward gold recycling. The maximum adsorption capacity could reach up to 1026.87 mg g-1 as in the case of light irradiation. Due to the strong N coordination sites and the electronic interaction between the -NH4+ groups of Pc-POSS-POPs and AuCl4-, Pc-POSS-POPs also exhibited excellent selectivity toward gold over several coordinated metals [Cr (VI), Co (II), Cd (II), Ni (II), and Hg (II)]. These properties together with the good regenerative ability and superior recyclability demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs possess promising potential as hypercross-linking polymers for capturing and recycling of Au (III).

Abstract:With the increase of discarded electronic devices, gold recovery from e-waste has induced great interests. Covalent organic framework (COF) as a new kind of porous crystalline material has great advantages in gold recovery due to its large specific surface area, selective functional groups, regular channels and controllable synthesis. Herein, an abundant hydroxyl groups decorated COF (TzDa-COF) with simple structure and high crystallinity was prepared for gold recovery. TzDa-COF exhibits a great Au(III) uptake up to 1866 mg center dot g(-1) with high selectivity and fast kinetics, which surpasses most of other COFs with complicated structures and multiple functional groups. Furthermore, dynamic adsorption column experiment for Au(III) in simulated e-waste was conducted, in which at a fast flow rate of 3 mL center dot min(-1) almost a complete Au(III) removal was achieved. By using the density functional theory (DFT), powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the Au(III) recovery mechanism of TzDa-COF mainly consists of coordination and reduction. The performance of TzDa-COF suggests attractive opportunity in practical recovery of gold from e-waste.
Polythioamide-g-C3N4 for Highly Efficient and Selective Gold Recovery

Abstract:Gold recovery from secondary sources is essential for sustainable supply. To develop a gold recovery approach with high efficiency and selectivity, polythioamide-functionalized carbon nitride (PTA-g-C3N4) was synthesized and applied to photo-induced gold extraction. PTA-g-C3N4 was synthesized by multicomponent polymerization of elemental sulfur, organic amines, acids and carbon nitrides. The maximum adsorption capacity of PTA-g-C3N4 reached 3668 mg·g−1, far exceeding other reported materials. Moreover, PTA-g-C3N4 enabled rapid (<3 min) and efficient gold recovery (>99%) from dilute solutions, and more importantly, the extraction for gold is highly selective in complicated wastewater and authentic e-waste leachates. High purity metallic gold with >95% content was obtained by incineration of the used material. Regeneration scheme and economic analysis further support the applicability. Mechanism studies revealed the formation of an efficient two-phase interface capable of selective adsorption and reduction of gold ions, where bifunctional PTA exhibited high affinity for AuCl4− and sacrificial behavior to accelerate photo-reduction.

Abstract:Abstract Developing an eco-friendly, efficient, and highly selective gold-recovery technology is urgently needed in order to maintain sustainable environments and improve the utilization of resources. Here we report an additive-induced gold recovery paradigm based on precisely controlling the reciprocal transformation and instantaneous assembly of the second-sphere coordinated adducts formed between β-cyclodextrin and tetrabromoaurate anions. The additives initiate a rapid assembly process by co-occupying the binding cavity of β-cyclodextrin along with the tetrabromoaurate anions, leading to the formation of supramolecular polymers that precipitate from aqueous solutions as cocrystals. The efficiency of gold recovery reaches 99.8% when dibutyl carbitol is deployed as the additive. This cocrystallization is highly selective for square-planar tetrabromoaurate anions. In a laboratory-scale gold-recovery protocol, over 94% of gold in electronic waste was recovered at gold concentrations as low as 9.3 ppm. This simple protocol constitutes a promising paradigm for the sustainable recovery of gold, featuring reduced energy consumption, low cost inputs, and the avoidance of environmental pollution.

Abstract:In consideration of the increasing demand for gold and the scarcity of mineral resources, this approach represents a promising avenue for the recovery of gold from secondary resources. In this paper, N1, N1'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(N1-(4-aminophenyl)benzene-1,4-diamine) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-p-dibenzaldehyde were successfully prepared by the solvothermal reaction method to synthesize a highly fluorinated covalent organic polymer with imine bonds (N-TFACOP) which can be used to recover gold ions from secondary sources. The structure of covalent organic polymer (COP) materials can be controlled. Fluorine atoms have extremely high electronegativity, which can enhance the chemical and thermal stability of organofluorine compounds, and to further enhance the stability of the materials and increase the adsorption capacity of gold. The fluorine atoms with strong electron-absorbing ability are selected to be introduced into the COP, which not only significantly increases the specific surface area, but also provides more surface active sites. At pH=4, an adsorption time of 720 min, and an adsorption temperature of 45°C, the maximum adsorption capacity of N-TFACOP for gold was as high as 2975.08 mg/g. There was no significant decrease in the adsorption rate after six cycles, which proved that the adsorption performance of the gold material was significantly improved N-TFACOP. The Au(III) was reduced to monomeric gold by complexation and redox reaction between the functional atom (N) and Au(III), so it has a high gold adsorption capacity of 2975.08 mg/g. In summary, we have verified the adsorption potential of a novel covalent organic polymer for Au(III), which provides a strong reference for the recycling of precious metal gold in secondary resources and the protection of environmental resources.

Abstract:Design of stable materials for selective gold extraction from complex sources is of a great challenge due to the poor understanding of the fundamental conversion processes responsible for anionic gold. Herein, engineering terminal hydroxyls is reported to tune the interfacial adsorption of aqueous [AuCl4]−. The energetically favorable nucleation pathway endorses the conversion of [AuCl4]− to Au atoms on the adsorption sites by dehydrochlorination, forming polyhedral Au particles anchored on the Zr6OH-BTC. Compared to the atomically separated adsorption, this terminal hydroxyl‑assisted approach achieved 5.7 times enhancement in the gold recovery capacity. This study paves a new way to comprehend the conversation and adsorption mechanism for alleviating the emerging dilemma of gold recovery.

Abstract:With the fast generation of electronic waste (e-waste) and the increasing depletion of metal resources, "urban mining" that can selectively recover gold from secondary resources has attracted great interest. Construction of materials with high extraction capacity and satisfying selectivity in complex aqueous-based matrices still remains challenging. Here, a novel metal-organic framework/polymer composite (Fe-BTC/poly(thioctic acid), denoted as Fe-BTC/pTA) has been newly synthesized and applied for selective gold recovery in different matrices (river water, seawater, and leaching solution of e-waste). Benefiting from the high specific surface area and suitable pore sizes as well as the rational design of active sites, the composite exhibits high adsorption capacity (920 mg/g), high removal efficiency (> 99%), fast kinetics (below 0.1 ppb within 10 min), and good applicability in complex matrices, which are better than those of most reported sulfur-containing adsorbents. Solid-state metallic gold with high purity can be effectively enriched due to the high recyclability and long-term stability of the composite. The material after adsorption can be further applied as a heterogeneous catalyst for water remediation due to the in situ generated gold nanoparticles by the redox reaction between Au(III) ions and the S-containing groups in the composites.

Anion-Regulated Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks for Highly Selective Recovery of Gold from E-Waste

Abstract:The existing electronic waste (e-waste) and leaching solutions generated by industries accumulate significant amounts of gold (Au), even in excess of those in natural minerals. Therefore, the recycling of Au is extremely significant for the potential sustainability of chemical industry. By designing ionic covalent organic frameworks (COFs), here we synthesize a series of Ionic-COF-X (X=Cl-, Br-, AcO-, and SO4 2-) by anion regulation strategy and further explore their adsorption performance towards Au recovery. All these ionic COFs exhibit ultrahigh gold adsorption efficiency and excellent regeneration. Moreover, anion regulation could indeed affect the Au capture performance. In particular, when Cl- ions serve as counter ions, the Au capacity of Ionic-COF-Cl could reach 1270.8 mg g-1. Moreover, in the actual CPU leaching solution test, the selectivity of Ionic-COF-Cl towards Au3+ ion hits 39000 and 4600 times higher than that of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions, respectively, suggesting that the Ionic-COF-Cl is a promising material for highly selective recovering gold from actual e-waste. DFT calculations further reveal that counter ions can regulate the adsorption affinity of ionic COF framework toward Au. In short, this work provides a useful anion regulation strategy to design ionic COFs as a promising platform for gold selective recovery from actual e-waste.

Abstract:With the widespread use of gold as a precious metal, the recovery of gold has become an urgent mission to be solved. Therefore, the design and preparation of a sorbent with better adsorbability and higher selectivity for Au (III) is of great significance for recovering gold resources and protecting the environment. In order to obtain an efficient and stable gold ion sorbent, N1, N1'-(1,4-phenylene) bis (N1-(4-aminophenyl) benzene-1,4-diamine) and 2,4,6-tricarboxylisophene were cross-linked by solvent thermal reaction to synthesize a double-functional covalent organic polymer (N-TPCOP). The N-TPCOP has a very high gold uptake capacity of 3400.38 mg/g, because it reduces Au (III) to elemental gold by sequestration and redox reactions between functional atoms (N, O) and Au (III). In summary, we have verified the adsorption potential of a novel covalent organic polymer for Au (III), which provides a strong reference for the recycling of precious metal gold in secondary resources and the protection of environmental resources.

Abstract:Enrichment of gold (Au) from wastewater is an efficient use of non-renewable resources and can reduce environmental pollution. Here, A new adsorbent (UiO-66-ES) is created that efficiently captures Au(III) in simulated wastewater by altering UiO-66-NH2 with poly(ethylene sulfide). The adsorbent was successfully prepared as confirmed by FT-IR, SEM, EDS, BET, XRD and XPS. At 318 K and a pH of 4.0, the highest removal ability of UiO-66-ES for gold ions is 723.005 mg/g. Kinetic studies revealed that Au(III) chemisorption on UiO-66-ES was the main driving force in the process. The recovery of Au(III) by UiO-66-ES happened as a monolayer adsorption over a uniform surface, according to the isotherm investigation. Meanwhile, thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption is a heat-absorbing and natural phenomenon. Moreover, after four adsorption–desorption cycles, UiO-66-ES still achieved 89.83% adsorption and 86.43% desorption. In simulated wastewater comprising seven metallic ions, the adsorbent is extremely specific for Au(III). The adsorption mechanism of Au(III) includes electrostatic attraction, chelation, and reduction, according to zeta and XPS data. Since its high adsorption capacity, great selectivity, and good repeatability, UiO-66-ES is projected to be used in the practice of gold (Au) recovery from wastewater.

Abstract:The recovery of precious metals (PMs) from secondary resources has garnered significant attention due to environmental and economic considerations. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising adsorbents for this purpose, owing to their tunable pore size, facile functionalization, exceptional chemical stability, and large specific surface area. This review provides an overview of the latest research progress in utilizing COFs to recover PMs. Firstly, the design and synthesis strategies of chemically stable COF‐based materials, including pristine COFs, functionalized COFs, and COF‐based composites, are delineated. Furthermore, the application of COFs in the recovery of gold, silver, and platinum group elements is delved into, emphasizing their high adsorption capacity and selectivity as well as recycling ability. Additionally, various interaction mechanisms between COFs and PM ions are analyzed. Finally, the current challenges faced by COFs in the field of PM recovery are discussed, and potential directions for future development are proposed, including enhancing the recyclability and reusability of COF materials and realizing the high recovery of PMs from actual acidic wastewater. Abstract:For the sustainable development of the ecological environment in gold recycling, it is urgently desired to develop a more efficient and highly selective process for gold ions from e-waste or mineral lixivium. As a kind of emerging two-dimensional nanomaterials, Ti3C2T x has emerged as a rapidly developing novel water treatment material. Herein, the preparation of few-layer Ti3C2T x nanosheets and their performance for recycling of gold ions were studied. Notably, it exhibits an impressive capacity of 2973.57 mg/g at room temperature, almost 124 times that of commercially available activated carbon (24 mg/g), and an exciting selectivity for Au(III) in the presence of competing ions due to perfectly weak reduction caused by the removal of the Al layer. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model can accurately depict the rapid adsorption process. Additionally, it can be regenerated effectively by thiourea and exhibits excellent reutilization. A critical mechanism involves an adsorptive–reduction pathway between Au(III) and active Ti sites. Excellent performance in real lixiviums from e-waste and gold-bearing sludge is also exhibited, demonstrating great potential for Au(III) recycling. It may be a sustainable direction for the capture and separation of Au(III) and also lays the foundation for the interface control of Ti3C2T x and Au NPs as a catalyst and other functional materials.

Abstract:With the fast-growing accumulation of electronic waste and rising demand for rare metals, it is compelling to develop technologies that can promotionally recover targeted metals, like gold, from waste, a process referred to as urban mining. Thus, there is increasing interest in the design of materials to achieve rapid, selective gold capture while maintaining high adsorption capacity, especially in complex aqueous-based matrices. Here, a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF)–polymer composite, BUT-33–poly( para -phenylenediamine) (PpPD), is assessed for gold extraction from several matrices including river water, seawater, and leaching solutions from CPUs. BUT-33–PpPD exhibits a record-breaking extraction rate, with high Au 3+ removal efficiency (>99%) within seconds (less than 45 s), a competitive capacity (1600 mg/g), high selectivity, long-term stability, and recycling ability. Furthermore, the high porosity and redox adsorption mechanism were shown to be underlying reasons for the material's excellent performance. Given the accumulation of recovered metallic gold nanoparticles inside, the material was also efficiently applied as a catalyst.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency adsorbents for recovering gold from electronic waste has significant economic and environmental benefits. In this work, the efficient and selective adsorbents (MoS 2 -TpTa-0.5, MoS 2 -TpTa-1.0 and MoS 2 -TpTa-1.5) were fabricated by combining TpTa, a COF material obtained by condensing 2,4,6-Triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4′'-Diamino-p-terphenyl (Ta), with MoS 2 for gold adsorption from electronic wastewater. The interaction between MoS 2 -TpTa and Au(III) occurred through an irreversible monolayer chemical adsorption mechanism, exhibiting adherence to both the pseudo-second order kinetics model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Remarkably, the MoS 2 -TpTa-1.5 composite exhibited an impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 2564.80 mg g −1 at an initial pH of 5.0. In addition, it exhibited selectivity for Au(III) recovery from a simulated solution that included coexisting ions of Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Mg(II), Zn(II), and Li(I). Meanwhile, the MoS 2 -TpTa composite can completely adsorb Au(III) from the lixivium of discarded circuit boards from mobile phones in as little as 5 min. In addition, MoS 2 -TpTa demonstrated good repeatability over five adsorption cycles. SEM, XPS and XRD characterization were employed to study the adsorption mechanism, revealing the coordination between Au(III) and N, O, and S functional groups. Subsequently, the presence of S 2- in the material resulted in the conversion of Au(III) ions to gold nanoparticles through reduction. The gold particles generated relatively large isolated clusters with a mean diameter reaching an astonishing 0.31 μm, exhibiting a regular hexagonal shape. This study proposes the combination of COF materials with metal sulfides to obtain composite materials with excellent adsorption performance, high selectivity and recyclability, holding substantial potential in practical electronic waste treatment for gold recovery.

Abstract:With the assistance of an in situ magnetic field, the gold recovery capacity of Fe/Co‐MOF@PDA NH is increased from 1217.93 to 1478.87 mg g−1, and the recovery rate increased by 24.7%. This study proposes a forward‐looking in situ energy field‐assisted strategy to enhance precious metal recovery. There are enormous economic benefits to conveniently increasing the selective recovery capacity of gold. Fe/Co‐MOF@PDA/NdFeB double‐network organogel (Fe/Co‐MOF@PDA NH) is synthesized by aggregation assembly strategy. The package of PDA provides a large number of nitrogen‐containing functional groups that can serve as adsorption sites for gold ions, resulting in a 21.8% increase in the ability of the material to recover gold. Fe/Co‐MOF@PDA NH possesses high gold recovery capacity (1478.87 mg g−1) and excellent gold selectivity (Kd = 5.71 mL g−1). With the assistance of an in situ magnetic field, the gold recovery capacity of Fe/Co‐MOF@PDA NH is increased from 1217.93 to 1478.87 mg g−1, and the recovery rate increased by 24.7%. The above excellent performance is attributed to the efficient reduction of gold by FDC/FC+, Co2+/Co3+ double reducing couple, and the optimization of the reduction reaction by the magnetic field. After the samples are calcined, high‐purity gold (95.6%, 22K gold) is recovered by magnetic separation. This study proposes a forward‐looking in situ energy field‐assisted strategy to enhance precious metal recovery, which has a guiding role in the development of low‐carbon industries.

Abstract:Recycling precious metals from the increasing amount of e-waste is significant for the sustainability of strategic metal resources. However, few technologies have been reported for efficient and highly selective recovery of precious metals from the strong acidic e-waste leachate. Herein, we demonstrated a simply synthesized thiolated β-cyclodextrin (T-CD) that can recover gold from multi-metal coexistence solutions at pH 2 with an exceptional adsorption capacity of 1890.98 mg/g, and a superior selectivity coefficient about 5×104. The recognition of Au3+ by sulfhydryl groups on T-CD and the hydrolysis of T-CD triggered by H+ were proved to be the critically important contributors to the highly selective recovery of gold from strong acid wastewater. In addition, T-CD can directly and effectively extract gold from actual waste PCB leachate, allowing the acidic solution to be recycled five times. This work provides a new guidance for the direct recovery of rare metals from strongly acidic wastewater.

Abstract:Effective and selective recovery of gold from e-waste is highly desired from the viewpoint of economics and environment, but remains a challenge. Herein, by combining the advantages of high porosity and abundant pyridine cations units, a cationic covalent triazine framework (CTF) was employed for gold recovery from e-waste. Impressively, the prepared iCTF-BPM (BPM = 1,4-bis(4-cyanopyridinium-l-methylene)-benzene·2Br - ) exhibits excellent adsorption capacity of 1836 mg g −1 , super-fast adsorption kinetics, and outstanding cycle stability. Especially, the recovery efficiency of Au of up to 99 % can be achieved within 1 min. More importantly, iCTF-BPM enables highly selective recovery of gold from the actual leaching solution of e-waste in the presence of high-concentration interfering ions (including Cu, Ni, and Zn), with more than 98 % of the gold removed within 1 min and over 99 % within 5 min. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations corroborate that the efficient gold adsorption of iCTF-BPM can be attributed to the synergy of electrostatic interaction, selective reduction, conjugation effect, and hydrogen-bond interactions between pyridine cation sites and AuCl 4 - ions.

Abstract:Critical metals of environmental and economic relevance can be found within complex mixtures, such as mine tailings, electronic waste and wastewater, at trace amounts. Specifically, gold is a critical metal that carries desired redox active properties in various applications, including modern electronics, medicine and chemical catalysis. Here we report the structuring of sub-micron Fe-BTC/PpPDA crystallites into larger 250μm or 500μm granules for continuous packed bed experiments for the precision separation of gold. The Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA is highly crystalline and porous with a BET surface area of 750 m2g-1. Further, the hybrid nanocomposite material maintains its selectivity for gold ions over common inorganic interferents. The structuring approach reported prevents excessive pressure drop and ensures stability over time and operation in a packed bed column. Further, we demonstrate that the Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA can concentrate at least 42 wt% of gold under a dynamic continuous flow operation. These findings highlight the potential of Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA for practical applications in industry, particularly in the selective capture of gold from complex mixtures.

Abstract:There is increasing interest in the development of noble metal separation/recovery processes, especially for applications to “urban mining”. Common separation/recovery processes for noble metals use a solvent (liquid-liquid) extraction technique in hydrometallurgy. However, these processes are time-consuming and not environmentally friendly, because they use organic solvents for sequential metal ion extractions. Electrowinning is an alternative approach for selective metal precipitation that involves controlling the redox potentials of electrodes but requires specialized equipment and generates hydrogen as a byproduct at the cathode surface under dilute conditions. In the present study, we investigated selective gold recovery from a homogenous aqueous solution containing a mixture of dilute HAuCl4 and H2PtCl6 (5.0 × 10−5 M each) and aromatic amino acid-containing peptides (2.0 × 10−4 M each). Gold selectivity was determined by analyzing the compositions of the solids and supernatants obtained from the reaction mixtures. A much higher gold selectivity (gold/platinum (Au/Pt) atomic ratio = 7.5) was obtained using an anthracene-containing peptide compared to peptides containing one or two naphthalene ring(s). Our proposed approach is applicable to the sequential separation of several noble metal ions, such as Au, palladium (Pd), Pt, iridium (Ir) and rhodium (Rh), and simply requires developing aromatics suitable for each noble metal of interest.
