Announcing the 2010 Measurement Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Awards

Abstract:Since 1991, Measurement Science and Technology has awarded a Best Paper prize. The Editorial Board of this journal believes that such a prize is an opportunity to thank authors for submitting their work, and serves as an integral part of the on-going quality review of the journal. The current breadth of topical areas that are covered by MST has made it advisable to expand the recognition of excellent publications. Hence, since 2005 the Editorial Board have presented 'Outstanding Paper Awards' in four subject categories: Fluid Mechanics; Measurement Science; Precision Measurements; and Sensors and Sensing Systems. Although the categories mirror subject sections in the journal, the Editorial Board consider articles from all categories in the selection process. This year, for example, the winning article of the Outstanding Paper Award in Sensors and Sensing Systems was an article published in the 'Novel Instrumentation' section. 2010 Award Winners—Fluid Mechanics Assessment of pressure field calculations from particle image velocimetry measurements John J Charonko, Cameron V King, Barton L Smith and Pavlos P Vlachos Department of Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24060, USA VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering & Sciences, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24060, USA Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Utah State University, UMC4130, Logan, UT 84322, USA Measuring p(t) in the interior of a flow field is one of the most challenging measurements in our field of study. An accurate knowledge of these interior pressures is of considerable value for fundamental studies. Since the gradient of the pressure appears in the Navier–Stokes equations, a knowledge of the pressure at a bounding surface followed by operations on the measured velocity components within the flow field can be analytically related to the pressure at an interior location. Bringing this long-recognized possibility to operational status has been greatly aided by the advent of particle image velocimetry (PIV), wherein 'instantaneous' planes of the velocity field are obtained. (The planar information, of course, falls short of the volumetric data that would be required for a complete measurement strategy.) In this paper [1] the authors first provide a valuable review of the literature in this area before presenting their original contribution. Operating with the constraint of incomplete information, the authors have significantly advanced this aspect of fluid mechanics measurements by: (i) performing error analysis evaluations of the extant methodologies, and (ii) introducing the use of POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) techniques to smooth the PIV data. Three globally unsteady flow fields are investigated in this paper. Two of the subject flows are simulations where the pressure can be compared with the inferred value using simulated PIV results—with the addition of typical measurement uncertainties—and the third test case is the unsteady flow in a planar diffuser. Whilst this instrument, operated in the non-contact mode (NC-AFM), has become a standard tool for atomic scale surface characterization, the paper deals specifically with its operation in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). Performance of the system is measured by the effective Q-factor. Recognizing that many factors influence the Q-factor, the authors conduct a careful study comparing measurements with simulations based on the size of the cantilever. Furthermore, they introduce a methodology to investigate in detail how the effective Q-factor depends on the fixation technique of the cantilever, and describe a strategy for avoiding fixation loss. By taking the necessary care in mounting the cantilever, they show that it is possible to routinely obtain an effective Q-factor in NC-AFM measurements in high or ultra-high vacuum that is within a 20% margin of the intrinsic Q-factor. As a result, the Q-factor that realistically can be expected in a NC-AFM system defines a principal limit of the minimum detectable force gradient for room temperature measurements of the order of 10−6 N m−1. Several features in the format of the article help to make this an excellent paper. Following an informative abstract, the introduction sets the background for the novelty of the paper, before a detailed account in the following sections. The results section is detailed and convincing, and leads to a set of concise quantitative conclusions. There is also a good set of 33 references at the end of the paper. This paper was rated as excellent by the external referees in the initial refereeing process. It is one of 28 papers nominated this year for the best paper award in measurement science, and it gained the most votes from those shortlisted. It is bound to make an impact in the field of atomic force microscopy. 2010 Award Winner—Precision Measurement Interferometric determination of the topographies of absolute sphere radii using the sphere interferometer of PTB Guido Bartl, Michael Krystek, Arnold Nicolaus and Walter Giardini Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Bundesallee 100, D-38116 Braunschweig, Germany National Measurement Institute, Bradfield Road, West Lindfield, NSW 2070, Australia This paper [3] describes a new method to reconstruct the absolute shape of a sphere using a stitching technique. In general, accurate and absolute measurements of spherical shapes are of primary importance in lens fabrication, calibration of three-dimensional coordinate machines and volume determination of density standard spheres. Particularly in the most recent research activities conducted for a redefinition of the kilogram, accurate volume measurements of silicon spheres have been needed for a determination of the Avogadro constant by the x-ray crystal density method. For this purpose, the authors developed a new principle to reconstruct a whole spherical surface from a limited number of segments distributed on the surface of the sphere. In a conventional stitching technique, it has been difficult to completely separate the real shape of the sphere from the misalignment effect in optical interferometry. In order to cope with this problem, the authors developed a new mathematical model describing the offset, tilt and defocus in a Fizeau interferometer. In the model, those misalignment effects are expressed in a matrix form based on Givens rotations, and the real shape of the sphere is successfully deduced from the matrix solution. The authors also validated the correctness of the new method by comparing the results with a conventional roundness measurement. This paper has been downloaded more than one hundred times since its publication. The selection committee members for the Precision Measurement Award (Dr K Fujii, Prof. X Chen, Dr A Yacoot, Dr P Williams and Dr T Eom) selected this paper from a strongly competitive list of ten candidates for its sophisticated idea and originality. Considering its impact on topographic evaluation of spherical surfaces and also on the determination of the fundamental physical constants, the paper was felt to be a good winner of the MST Precision Measurement Award for 2010. 2010 Award Winners—Sensors and Sensing Systems Noncontact modulated laser calorimetry in a dc magnetic field for stable and supercooled liquid silicon Hidekazu Kobatake, Hiroyuki Fukuyama, Takao Tsukada and Satoshi Awaji Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM), Tohoku University, 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba, Sendai, 980-8577, Japan Department of Chemical Engineering, Tohoku University, Aramaki Aoba, Aoba-ku, Sendai, 980-8577, Japan Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku University, 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba-ku, Sendai 980-8577, Japan An accurate value of the thermal conductivity of supercooled liquid silicon proves very helpful to better numerical heat flow models used for the production of high-quality silicon crystals. Measuring this important parameter is a challenge since the accuracy is frustrated by convections and imprecise non-contact temperature measurements, resulting in a wide variation of values reported in the literature so far. By improving the non-contact temperature measurement on a magnetically levitated drop of silicon the authors succeeded in a substantial reduction of the uncertainty in the measured values of the heat capacity and the thermal conductivity including their temperature dependence. Modulation of the heat power and an accurate measurement of the amplitude and phase of the resulting temperature variation constitute the major contribution to a higher accuracy. In their winning paper [4] the authors present a clear overview of their measurement setup and the experimental procedure and conditions, and give an extensive analysis of the parameters that play a part in the overall uncertainty. Measured values are compared with those obtained by other methods and reported in relevant literature. Moreover, the improvements of the instrumentation implemented by the authors contribute to a better understanding of the heat transport processes in liquid silicon. The four chairmen would like to thank the authors for choosing to publish their work in Measurement Science and Technology, and hope that other researchers enjoy reading these works and feel encouraged to submit their own best work to the journal.
