Fluids at the Nanoscale: from continuum to sub-continuum transport

Abstract:Nanofluidics has firmly established itself as a new field in fluid mechanics, as novel properties have been shown to emerge in fluids at the nanometric scale. Thanks to recent developments in fabrication technology, artificial nanofluidic systems are now being designed at the scale of biological nanopores. This ultimate step in scale reduction has pushed the development of new experimental techniques and new theoretical tools, bridging fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics. This review is intended as a toolbox for fluids at the nanometre scale. After presenting the basic equations that govern fluid behaviour in the continuum limit, we will show how these equations break down and new properties emerge in molecular scale confinement.

Abstract:We report the discovery of a new SNR in the \ros All-Sky-Survey data. The SNR has a nearly circular shape with a diameter of about 15 arcmin. The surface brightness is rather uniform over the remnant. The observed interstellar absorption suggests a distance of about 1.8$^{+1.4}_{-0.8}$ kpc. The X-ray emission appears to be of thermal origin with a plasma temperature of about 10$^7$ K. The Sedov model leads to an age of only 1800 years. We find no spectral evidence of non-thermal emission in the center of the remnant. The two most likely explanations for the centrally filled structure are evaporation of shock heated clouds in the interior of the remnant or a reverse shock heating the ejecta of the SNR explosion.

Abstract:If one opens today a textbook on fluid mechanics, it seems that whereas French scientists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are frequently mentioned, those from more recent times occur rarely; in particular, French contributions to the major breakthroughs of the first half of the twentieth century (boundary layers and turbulence) would appear quite modest. However, study of contemporary documents (PhD theses, journals, correspondence, etc.) reveals remarkable work undertaken by outstanding personalities. A key instigator of these achievements was the French Air Ministry, which, starting in 1929, and with great open-mindedness, created and generously financed four Institutes of Fluid Mechanics and five teaching centers in faculties of science. This reveals the 1930s in their true light as a fruitful decade, with achievements that explain the prominent role played by France in the creation of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) in 1946. This review recounts the story of fluid mechanics in France, with emphasis on the connection between scientific questions and social and cultural issues, in a period marked by two world wars and great strengthening of international relationships.

Abstract:In this work, we will present a physically consistent theory to derive the governing equations of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) framework based on first principles rather than the motivation to conduct computationally affordable simulations of turbulent flows. Therefore, we assume that a coarse-grained fluid element, subsequently called super fluid element, can be locally defined comprising a large number of smaller elementary fluid elements. Then, similar to non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD), in which the transport equations of an elementary fluid element can be consistently reconstructed from the local, collective dynamics of molecules, the transport equations of a super fluid element can be derived from the local, collective dynamics of elementary fluid elements. Interestingly, we find: (a) Favre filtering is a physical consistency condition, (b) why Boussinesq's hypothesis in conjunction with eddy viscosity models is commonly employed in LES and (c) that the LES framework might be more than a numerical turbulence model for computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Abstract:A computational approach is introduced for the study of the rheological properties of complex fluids and soft materials. The approach allows for a consistent treatment of microstructure elastic mechanics, hydrodynamic coupling, thermal fluctuations, and externally driven shear flows. A mixed description in terms of Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frames is used for the physical system. Microstructure configurations are represented in a Lagrangian reference frame. Conserved quantities, such as momentum of the fluid and microstructures, are represented in an Eulerian reference frame. The mathematical formalism couples these different descriptions using general operators subject to consistency conditions. Thermal fluctuations are taken into account in the formalism by stochastic driving fields introduced in accordance with the principles of statistical mechanics. To study the rheological responses of materials subject to shear, generalized periodic boundary conditions are developed where periodic images are shifted relative to the unit cell to induce shear. Stochastic numerical methods are developed for the formalism. As a demonstration of the methods, results are presented for the shear responses of a polymeric fluid, lipid vesicle fluid, and a gel-like material.

Stochastic Eulerian Lagrangian Methods for Fluid-Structure Interactions with Thermal Fluctuations

Abstract:We present approaches for the study of fluid-structure interactions subject to thermal fluctuations. A mixed mechanical description is utilized combining Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frames. We establish general conditions for operators coupling these descriptions. Stochastic driving fields for the formalism are derived using principles from statistical mechanics. The stochastic differential equations of the formalism are found to exhibit significant stiffness in some physical regimes. To cope with this issue, we derive reduced stochastic differential equations for several physical regimes. We also present stochastic numerical methods for each regime to approximate the fluid-structure dynamics and to generate efficiently the required stochastic driving fields. To validate the methodology in each regime, we perform analysis of the invariant probability distribution of the stochastic dynamics of the fluid-structure formalism. We compare this analysis with results from statistical mechanics. To further demonstrate the applicability of the methodology, we perform computational studies for spherical particles having translational and rotational degrees of freedom. We compare these studies with results from fluid mechanics. The presented approach provides for fluid-structure systems a set of rather general computational methods for treating consistently structure mechanics, hydrodynamic coupling, and thermal fluctuations.

Abstract:This is a paper compiled by students of the 2008 Summer School on Particles, Fields, and Strings held at the University of British Columbia on lectures given by Veronika Hubeny as understood and interpreted by the authors. We start with an introduction to the AdS/CFT duality. More specifically, we discuss the correspondence between relativistic, conformal hydrodynamics and Einstein's theory of gravity. Within our framework the Einstein equations are an effective description for the string theory in the bulk of AdS_5 spacetime and the hydrodynamic fluid equations represent the conformal field theory near thermal equilibrium on the boundary. In particular we present a new technique for calculating properties in fluid dynamics using the stress-energy tensor induced on the boundary, by the gravitational field in the bulk, and comparing it with the form of the stress-energy tensor from hydrodynamics. A detailed treatment can be found in [JHEP 02 (2008) 045] and [arXiv:0803.2526].

Abstract:This paper concerns the extension of high resolution kinetic flux-vector splitting (KFVS) finite volume methods. A suitable modification of Maxwellian is given to recover the Euler equations for real gases with an additional conservative equation in the new method. Based on it and the well-known connection between Euler equations and Boltzmann equations, a high resolution KFVS scheme is presented to solve multifluid flows, without any Riemann solvers and adding any nonconservative corrections. The numerical solutions shown are oscillation-free near material fronts, and have correct shock speeds.
Fluctuating hydrodynamics of multi-species, non-reactive mixtures

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the formulation of the fuctuating Navier-Stokes (FNS) equations for multi-species, non-reactive fluids. In particular, we establish a form suitable for numerical solution of the resulting stochastic partial differential equations. An accurate and efficient numerical scheme, based on our previous methods for single species and binary mixtures, is presented and tested at equilibrium as well as for a variety of non-equilibrium problems. These include the study of giant nonequilibrium concentration fluctuations in a ternary mixture in the presence of a diffusion barrier, the triggering of a Rayleigh-Taylor instability by diffusion in a four-species mixture, as well as reverse diffusion in a ternary mixture. Good agreement with theory and experiment demonstrates that the formulation is robust and can serve as a useful tool in the study of thermal fluctuations for multi-species fluids. The extension to include chemical reactions will be treated in a sequel paper.

Abstract:In an important series of articles published during the 70's, Krasiński displayed a class of interior solutions of the Einstein field equations sourced by a stationary isentropic rotating cylinder of perfect fluid. However, these solutions depend on an unspecified arbitrary function, which lead the author to claim that the equation of state of the fluid could not be obtained directly from the field equations but had to be added by hand. In the present article, we use a double ansatz which we have developed in 2021 and implemented at length into a series of recent papers displaying exact interior solutions for a stationary rotating cylindrically symmetric fluid with anisotropic pressure. This ansatz allows us to obtain here a fully integrated class of solutions to the Einstein equations, written with the use of very simple analytical functions, and to show that the equation of state of the fluid follows naturally from these field equations.

Part of this development will raise the profile of the focusing on continuum mechanics in general, structural mechanics, biomechanics, micro- and nanomechanics as well as hydrodynamics. In particular, the following topics are emphasized: thermodynamics of materials, material modeling, multi-physics, mechanical properties of materials, homogenization, phase transitions, fracture and damage mechanics, vibration, wave propagation, experimental mechanics as well as machine learning techniques in the context of applied mechanics. Thereby, new analytical, numerical and experimental methods suited to research in the above-mentioned subjects as well as contributions reviewing the development in these fields are welcome.

Abstract:We develop stochastic mixed finite element methods for spatially adaptive simulations of fluid-structure interactions when subject to thermal fluctuations. To account for thermal fluctuations, we introduce a discrete fluctuation-dissipation balance condition to develop compatible stochastic driving fields for our discretization. We perform analysis that shows our condition is sufficient to ensure results consistent with statistical mechanics. We show the Gibbs-Boltzmann distribution is invariant under the stochastic dynamics of the semi-discretization. To generate efficiently the required stochastic driving fields, we develop a Gibbs sampler based on iterative methods and multigrid to generate fields with $O(N)$ computational complexity. Our stochastic methods provide an alternative to uniform discretizations on periodic domains that rely on Fast Fourier Transforms. To demonstrate in practice our stochastic computational methods, we investigate within channel geometries having internal obstacles and no-slip walls how the mobility/diffusivity of particles depends on location. Our methods extend the applicability of fluctuating hydrodynamic approaches by allowing for spatially adaptive resolution of the mechanics and for domains that have complex geometries relevant in many applications.

Geometric, Variational, and Bracket Descriptions of Fluid Motion with Open Boundaries

Abstract:We develop a Lie group geometric framework for the motion of fluids with permeable boundaries that extends Arnold's geometric description of fluid in closed domains. Our setting is based on the classical Hamilton principle applied to fluid trajectories, appropriately amended to incorporate bulk and boundary forces via a Lagrange-d'Alembert approach, and to take into account only the fluid particles present in the fluid domain at a given time. By applying a reduction by relabelling symmetries, we deduce a variational formulation in the Eulerian description that extends the Euler-Poincaré framework to open fluids. On the Hamiltonian side, our approach yields a bracket formulation that consistently extends the Lie-Poisson bracket of fluid dynamics and contains as a particular case a bulk+boundary bracket formulation proposed earlier. We illustrate the geometric framework with several examples, and also consider the extension of this setting to include multicomponent fluids, the consideration of general advected quantities, the analysis of higher-order fluids, and the incorporation of boundary stresses. Open fluids are found in a wide range of physical systems, including geophysical fluid dynamics, porous media, incompressible flow and magnetohydrodynamics. This new formulation permits a description based on geometric mechanics that can be applied to a broad class of models.

Abstract:A finite-difference approximation of elastic forces on Lagrangian grids is constructed by applying the support operator method. For displacement vectors on unstructured grids with minimal reasonable constraints imposed on their topological and geometric structure, approximations of vector analysis operations are constructed as applied to difference schemes for elasticity problems. Taking into account the energy balance of the medium, the constructed families of integrally consistent approximations of vector analysis operations are sufficient for discrete simulation of these processes. Schemes are considered in which the stress tensor is used in explicit form or is split into a spherical and a shear component (pressure and deviator). The latter approach is used to construct uniform algorithms applicable to both the solid body and the evaporated phase. The approximations are constructed using linear elasticity theory. The resulting forces are obtained in explicit form in three-dimensional geometry. Sound waves propagating in a three-dimensional orthogonal aluminum plate as generated by an impact on its end are computed.
