Abstract:We develop a more accurate secular form for the Redfield non-secular master equation, which is insensitive to the choice of the basis. This completely solves the ambiguity on which basis should be used when the secular approximation of the Redfield master equation is applied.

Abstract:In this paper we derive the Lindblad and Redfield forms with and without secular approximation from the Born-Markov master equation for open quantum systems. The spectral correlation tensor of bath (the Fourier transform of the bath correlation function) and then the coefficients in the two forms of the master equation are reevaluated according to the scheme in Ref.[Phys. Rev. A 99, 022118 (2019)]. They are complex numbers rather than the real numbers getting from traditional simplified methods. The dynamics of two models [one is an open three-level quantum system model, and the other is the model of phycoerythrin 545 (PE545) of modeling a photosynthesis reaction center] are studied by using the obtained equations. The non-secular Lindblad and Redfield equations with the complex coefficients predict almost the same dynamical results from the Born-Markov master equation. However, the results obtained from the traditional Lindblad and Redfield equations deviate the actual dynamics of the open quantum systems.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the spectral properties of the infinitesimal generator of an infinite system of master equations arising in the analysis of the approach to equilibrium in statistical mechanics. The system under investigation thus consists of infinitely many first-order differential equations governing the time evolution of probabilities susceptible of describing jumps between the eigenstates of a differential operator with a discrete point spectrum. The transition rates between eigenstates are chosen in such a way that the so-called detailed balance conditions are satisfied, so that for a large class of initial conditions the given system possesses a global solution which converges exponentially rapidly toward a time independent probability of Gibbs type. A particular feature and a challenge of the problem under investigation is that in the natural functional space where the initial-value problem is well-posed, the infinitesimal generator is realized as a non normal and non dissipative compact operator, whose spectrum therefore does not exhibit a spectral gap around the zero eigenvalue in contrast to the finite-dimensional case.

Abstract:Following the ideas N. N. Bogoliubov used to derive the classical and quantum nonlinear kinetic equations, we give an alternative derivation of the Redfield quantum linear master equation, which is widely used in the theory of open quantum systems, as well as higher-order corrections to it. This derivation naturally considers initially correlated system-reservoir states arising from the previous system-reservoir dynamics. It turns out that the Redfield equation does not require any modifications in this case. The expressions of higher-order corrections are simpler than those obtained by other methods.

Abstract:The Redfield equation describes the dynamics of a quantum system weakly coupled to one or more reservoirs and is widely used in theory of open quantum system. However, the assumption of weak system-reservoir coupling is often not fully adequate and higher-order corrections to the Redfield equation with respect to the system-bath coupling is required. Here we propose a general method of derivation of higher-order corrections to the Redfield quantum master equation based on the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM). Also we derive conditions of validity of the Redfield equation as well as the additional secular approximation for it.

Effective time-dependent temperature for fermionic master equations beyond the Markov and the secular approximations

Abstract:We consider a quantum system coupled to environment at a fixed temperature and describe the reduced evolution of the system by means of a Redfield equation with effective time-dependent contact temperature obeying a universal law. At early times, after the system and environment start in a product state, the effective contact temperature appears to be much higher, yet eventually it settles down towards the true environment value. In this way, we obtain a method which includes non-Markovian effects and can be further applied to various types of GKSL equations, beyond the secular approximation and time-averaging methods. We derive the theory from first principles and discuss its application using a simple example of a single quantum dot.

Abstract:We introduce a new regularization of the Redfield equation based on a replacement of the Kossakowski matrix with its closest positive semidefinite neighbor. Unlike most of the existing approaches, this procedure is capable of retaining the time dependence of the Kossakowski matrix, leading to a completely positive divisible quantum process. Using the dynamics of an exactly-solvable three-level open system as a reference, we show that our approach performs better during the transient evolution, if compared to other approaches like the partial secular master equation or the universal Lindblad equation. To make the comparison between different regularization schemes independent from the initial states, we introduce a new quantitative approach based on the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism.

Taming the Bloch-Redfield equation: Recovering an accurate Lindblad equation for general open quantum systems

Abstract:Master equations play a pivotal role in investigating open quantum systems. In particular, the Bloch-Redfield equation stands out due to its relation to a concrete physical environment. However, without further approximations it does not lead to a Lindblad master equation that guarantees that the density matrix stays completely positive, which has raised some concerns regarding its use. This study builds on previous efforts to transform the Bloch-Redfield framework into a mathematically robust Lindblad equation, while fully preserving the effects that are lost within the secular approximation that is commonly used to guarantee positivity. These previous approaches introduce two potential deficiencies: the environment-induced energy shift can be non-Hermitian and some decay rates can be negative, violating the assumptions of Lindblad's theorem. Here, we propose and evaluate straightforward solutions to both problems. Our approach offers an effective and general procedure for obtaining a Lindblad equation, derived from a concrete physical environment, while mitigating the unphysical dynamics present in the Bloch-Redfield equation.

Abstract:Despite recent advances in quantum sciences, a quantum master equation that accurately and simply characterizes open quantum dynamics across extremely long timescales and in dispersive environments is still needed. In this study, we optimize the computation of the fourth-order time-convolutionless master equation to meet this need. Early versions of this master equation required computing a multidimensional integral, limiting its use. Our master equation accounts for simultaneous relaxation and dephasing, resulting in coefficients proportional to the system's spectral density over frequency derivative. In sub-Ohmic environments, this derivative induces infrared divergence in the master equation, invalidating the second-order Bloch-Redfield master equation findings. We analyze the approach to a ground state in a generic open quantum system and demonstrate that it is not reliably computed by the Bloch-Redfield equation alone. The optimized fourth-order equation shows that the ground-state approach is accurate to second order in bath coupling regardless of the dispersion, even though it can diverge in the fourth order at zero temperature.

Abstract:A perturbative quantum master equation is derived for a system interacting with its environment, which is more general than the ones derived before. Our master equation takes into account the effect of the energy exchanges between the system and the environment and the conservation of energy in the finite total system. This master equation describes relaxation mechanisms in isolated nanoscopic quantum systems. In its most general form, this equation is non-Markovian and a Markovian version of it rules the long-time relaxation. We show that our equation reduces to the Redfield equation in the limit where the energy of the system does not affect the density of state of its environment. This master equation and the Redfield one are applied to a spin-environment model defined in terms of random matrices and compared with the solutions of the exact von Neumann equation. The comparison proves the necessity to allow energy exchange between the subsystem and the environment in order to correctly describe the relaxation in an isolated nanoscopic total system.

Abstract:We put forth a new class of quantum master equations that correctly reproduce the asymptotic state of an open quantum system beyond the infinitesimally weak system-bath coupling limit. Our method is based on incorporating the knowledge of the reduced steady state into its dynamics. The correction not only steers the reduced system toward a correct steady state but also improves the accuracy of the dynamics, thereby refining the archetypal Born-Markov weak-coupling second-order master equations. In case of equilibrium, we use the exact mean-force Gibbs state to correct the Redfield quantum master equation. By benchmarking it with the exact solution of the damped harmonic oscillator, we show that our method also helps correct the long-standing issue of positivity violation, albeit without complete positivity. Our method of a canonically consistent quantum master equation opens a new perspective in the theory of open quantum systems leading to a reduced density matrix accurate beyond the commonly used Redfield and Lindblad equations, while retaining the same conceptual and numerical complexity.

Abstract:A quantum system that interacts with an environment generally undergoes non-unitary evolution described by a non-Markovian or Markovian master equation. In this paper, we construct the non-Markovian Redfield master equation for a quantum scalar field that interacts with a second field through a bilinear or nonlinear interaction on a Minkowski background. We use the resulting master equation to set up coupled differential equations that can be solved to obtain the equal-time two-point function of the system field. We show how the equations simplify under various approximations including the Markovian limit, and argue that the Redfield equation-based solution provides a perturbative resummation to the standard second order Dyson series result. For the bilinear interaction, we explicitly show that the Redfield solution is closer to the exact solution compared to the perturbation theory-based one. Further, the environment correlation function is oscillatory and non-decaying in this case, making the Markovian master equation a poor approximation. For the nonlinear interaction, on the other hand, the environment correlation function is sharply peaked and the Redfield solution matches that obtained using a Markovian master equation in the late-time limit.

Global becomes local: Efficient many-body dynamics for global master equations

Abstract:This work makes progress on the issue of global- vs. local- master equations. Global master equations like the Redfield master equation (following from standard Born- and Markov- approximation) require a full diagonalization of the system Hamiltonian. This is especially challenging for interacting quantum many-body systems. We discuss a short-bath-correlation-time expansion in reciprocal (energy) space, leading to a series expansion of the jump operator, which avoids a diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. For a bath that is coupled locally to one site, this typically leads to an expansion of the global Redfield jump operator in terms of local operators. We additionally map the local Redfield master equation to a novel local Lindblad form, giving an equation which has the same conceptual advantages of traditional local Lindblad approaches, while being applicable in a much broader class of systems. Our ideas give rise to a non-heuristic foundation of local master equations, which can be combined with established many-body methods.

Abstract:Since its introduction by P.L. Lions in his lectures and seminars at the College de France, see [9], and also the very helpful notes of Cardialaguet [4] on Lions' lectures, the Master Equation has attracted a lot of interest, and various points of view have been expressed, see for example Carmona-Delarue [5], Bensoussan-Frehse-Yam [2], Buckdahn-Li-Peng-Rainer [3]. There are several ways to introduce this type of equation; and in those mentioned works, they involve an argument which is a probability measure, while P.L. Lions has recently proposed the idea of working with the Hilbert space of square integrable random variables. Hence writing the equation is an issue; while another issue is its origin. In this article, we discuss all these various aspects, and our modeling argument relies heavily on a seminar at College de France delivered by P.L. Lions on November 14, 2014.

Abstract:Recently, Nathan and Rudner derived a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation from the Redfield equation. The claim is that the level of approximation is equal to that of the Redfield equation. Here we benchmark the Nathan-Rudner equation (NRE) against the exact solution of a damped harmonic oscillator and compare its performance to that of the time-dependent Redfield equation (RE). We find that which of the equations performs better depends on the regime considered. It turns out that the short-time dynamics is generally much better captured by the RE, whereas the NRE delivers results comparable to those of the rotating-wave approximation. For the steady state, in the high-temperature limit the RE again performs better and its solution approaches the exact result for ultrahigh temperatures. Nevertheless, here also the NR equation constitutes a good approximation. In the low-temperature limit, in turn, the NRE provides a better approximation than the RE. For too strong coupling, here the RE might even fail completely by predicting unphysical behaviour.

Abstract:A system of N ≫ 1 interacting spinless quantum particles, described by a statistical operator F(t), is considered. A time-dependent projection operator formalism for a family of projectors, which select a statistical operator F S ( t ) for a group of S < N relevant particles by integration of the variables of the irrelevant N − S 'environment' particles, is presented. This formalism results in a nonlinear version of the inhomogeneous Nakajima–Zwanzig generalized master equation (GME) for the relevant part of the statistical operator F(t), which contains an undesirable initial condition term related to the irrelevant part of the statistical operator depending on N variables. By introducing an additional operator identity, the obtained nonlinear inhomogeneous Nakajima–Zwanzig equation is exactly converted into a homogeneous nonlinear equation, accounting for initial correlations in the kernel governing its evolution. Both of these equations are equivalent to the corresponding evolution equations for F S ( t ) and take into account the dynamics of the environment particles. The equations for F S ( t ) are specialized in the linear approximation for the particle density n and analyzed for a one-particle statistical operator F 1 ( t ) . It turns out that, in addition to the correlations caused by interparticle interaction, the irrelevant initial condition term in the inhomogeneous equation for F 1 ( t ) , defined by the two-particle correlations, also contains quantum correlations conditioned by the quantum particle statistics. The latter do not vanish with time and cannot be disregarded in the conventional way by applying e.g. Bogoliubov's principle of weakening of initial correlations. In order to take initial quantum and other correlations (commonly discarded in an unconvincing way) into consideration, the obtained nonlinear homogeneous GME has been applied. Exact in the first approximation in n, we obtain a new homogeneous equation for F 1 ( t ) , which accounts for correlations and is valid for any time moment t. It is shown how this reversible-in-time equation changes at different timescales and converts into the irreversible quantum Boltzmann equation on the macroscopic timescale without the use of the conventional approximations.

Abstract:Starting from a microscopic system-baths description, we derive the general conditions for a time-local quantum master equation (QME) to satisfy the first and second law of thermodynamics at the fluctuating level. Using counting statistics, we show that the fluctuating second law can be rephrased as a Generalized Quantum Detailed Balance condition (GQDB), i.e., a symmetry of the time-local generators which ensures the validity of the fluctuation theorem. When requiring in addition a strict system-bath energy conservation, the GQDB reduces to the usual notion of detailed balance which ensures QMEs with Gibbsian steady states. However, if energy conservation is only required on average, QMEs with non Gibbsian steady states can still maintain a certain level of thermodynamic consistency. Applying our theory to commonly used QMEs, we show that the Redfield equation breaks the GQDB, and that some recently derived approximation schemes based on the Redfield equation (which hold beyond the secular approximation and allow to derive a QME of Lindblad form) satisfy the GQDB and the average first law. We find that performing the secular approximation is the only way to ensure the first and second law at the fluctuating level.

Abstract:We derive a new perturbative quantum master equation for the reduced density matrix of a system interacting with an environment (with a dense spectrum of energy levels). The total system energy (system plus environment) is constant and finite. This equation takes into account the finite energy effects of the environment due to the total energy conservation. This equation is more general than the common perturbative equations used for describing a system in interaction with an environment (like the Redfield equation or the Cohen-Tannoudji one) because these last equations can be deduced from it in the limit of an infinitely large environment. We apply numerically this equation to the spin-GORM model. This model represents the interaction of a two-level system with an environment described by random matrices. We compare our equation with the exact von Neumann equation of the total system and show its superiority compared to the Redfield equation (in the Markovian and non-Markovian cases).

Abstract:Understanding system-bath correlations in open quantum systems is essential for various quantum information and technology applications. Derivations of most master equations (MEs) for the dynamics of open systems require approximations that mask dependence of the system dynamics on correlations, since the MEs focus on reduced system dynamics. Here we demonstrate that the most common MEs indeed contain hidden information about explicit system-environment correlation. We unfold these correlations by recasting the MEs into a universal form in which the system-bath correlation operator appears. The equations include the Lindblad, Redfield, second-order time-convolutionless, second-order Nakajima-Zwanzig, and second-order universal Lindblad-like cases. We further illustrate our results in an example, which implies that the second-order universal Lindblad-like equation captures correlation more accurately than other standard techniques.

Time-convolutionless cosmological master equations: Late-time resummations and decoherence for non-local kernels

Abstract:We revisit a simple toy model of two scalar fields in de Sitter space, playing the roles of "system" and "environment" degrees of freedom, which interact with each other. We show that there are secular divergences in physically relevant observables which arise solely from the non-Markovian part of the memory kernel, contrary to popular belief that secular growth typically comes from local terms in evolution equations. Nevertheless, we show that these terms can still be non-perturbatively resummed, using the time-convolutionless master equation formalism, which improves upon previous approximations. At the same time, there are other physical quantities in the same model that are dominated by local terms in the memory kernel. Therefore, we conclude that, for cosmological backgrounds, either the dissipation or the noise kernel can end up being dominated by non-local terms depending on the nature of the system-environment coupling.
