Abstract:We consider a Serrin-type problem in convex cones in the Euclidean space and motivated by recent rigidity results we study the quantitative stability issue for this problem. In particular, we prove both sharp Lipschitz estimates for an $L^2-$pseudodistance and estimates in terms of the Hausdorff distance.

Abstract:The quantitative analysis of bubbling phenomena for almost constant mean curvature boundaries is an important question having significant applications in various fields including capillarity theory and the study of mean curvature flows. Such a quantitative analysis was initiated in [G. Ciraolo and F. Maggi, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (2017)], where the first quantitative result of proximity to a set of disjoint balls of equal radii was obtained in terms of a uniform deviation of the mean curvature from being constant. Weakening the measure of the deviation in such a result is a delicate issue that is crucial in view of the applications for mean curvature flows. Some progress in this direction was recently made in [V. Julin and J. Niinikoski, Anal. PDE (2023)], where $L^{N-1}$-deviations are considered for domains in $\mathbb{R}^N$. In the present paper we significantly weaken the measure of the deviation, obtaining a quantitative result of proximity to a set of disjoint balls of equal radii for the following deviation $$ \int_{\partial \Omega } \left( H_0 - H \right)^+ dS_x, \quad \text{ where } \begin{cases} H \text{ is the mean curvature of } \partial \Omega , \\ H_0:=\frac{| \partial \Omega |}{N | \Omega |} , \\ \left( H_0 - H \right)^+:=\max\left\lbrace H_0 - H , 0 \right\rbrace , \end{cases} $$ which is clearly even weaker than $\Vert H_0-H \Vert_{L^1( \partial \Omega )}$.

Abstract:We present extensions of rigidity estimates and of Korn's inequality to the setting of (mixed) variable exponents growth. The proof techniques, based on a classical covering argument, rely on the log-Hölder continuity of the exponent to get uniform regularity estimates on each cell of the cover, and on an extension result à la Nitsche in Sobolev spaces with variable exponents. As an application, by means of $\Gamma$-convergence we perform a passage from nonlinear to linearized elasticity under variable subquadratic energy growth far from the energy well.

Abstract:The sharp isoperimetric inequality for non-compact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth has been obtained in increasing generality with different approaches in a number of contributions [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.05022" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.05022">arXiv:1812.05022</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.09490" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.09490">arXiv:2012.09490</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.13717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.13717">arXiv:2009.13717</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.08496" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.08496">arXiv:2103.08496</a>] culminated by Balogh and Kristaly [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.11862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.11862">arXiv:2012.11862</a>] covering also m.m.s.'s verifying the non-negative Ricci curvature condition in the synthetic sense of Lott, Sturm and Villani. In sharp contrast with the compact case of positive Ricci curvature, for a large class of spaces including weighted Riemannian manifolds, no complete characterisation of the equality cases is present in the literature. The scope of this note is to settle this problem by proving, in the same generality of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.11862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.11862">arXiv:2012.11862</a>], that the equality in the isoperimetric inequality can be attained only by metric balls. Whenever this happens the space is forced, in a measure theoretic sense, to be a cone. Our result applies to different frameworks yielding as corollaries new rigidity results: it extend to weighted Riemannian manifold the rigidity results of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.13717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.13717">arXiv:2009.13717</a>], it extend to general $\mathsf{RCD}$ spaces the rigidity results of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.04916" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.04916">arXiv:2201.04916</a>] and finally applies also to the Euclidean setting by proving that that optimisers in the anisotropic and weighted isoperimetric inequality for Euclidean cones are necessarily the Wulff shapes.

Abstract:We describe a new and robust method to prove rigidity results in complex dynamics. The new ingredient is the geometry of the critical puzzle pieces: under control of geometry and “complex bounds”, two generalized polynomial-like maps which admit a topological conjugacy, quasiconformal outside the filled-in Julia set, are indeed quasiconformally conjugate. The proof uses a new abstract removability-type result for quasiconformal maps, following ideas of Heinonen and Koskela and of Kallunki and Koskela, optimized for applications in complex dynamics. We prove, as the first application of this new method, that, for even criticalities distinct from two, the period two cycle of the Fibonacci renormalization operator is hyperbolic with 1 1 -dimensional unstable manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine some shape functionals, introduced by Pólya and Makai, involving the torsional rigidity and the first Dirichlet-Laplacian eigenvalue for bounded, open and convex sets of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We establish new quantitative bounds, which give us key properties and information on the behavior of the optimizing sequences. In particular, we consider two kinds of reminder terms that provide information about the structure of these minimizing sequences, such as information about the thickness.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth, compact, connected, oriented Riemannian manifold, and let $\imath: M \to \mathbb R^d$ be an isometric embedding. Ricci curvature bounds and rigidity for non-smooth Riemannian and semi-Riemannian metrics

Abstract:We study rigidity problems for Riemannian and semi-Riemannian manifolds with metrics of low regularity. Specifically, we prove a version of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem \cite{CheegerGromoll72splitting} for Riemannian metrics and the flatness criterion for semi-Riemannian metrics of regularity $C^1$. With our proof of the splitting theorem, we are able to obtain an isometry of higher regularity than the Lipschitz regularity guaranteed by the $\mathsf{RCD}$-splitting theorem \cite{gigli2013splitting, gigli2014splitoverview}. Along the way, we establish a Bochner-Weitzenböck identity which permits both the non-smoothness of the metric and of the vector fields, complementing a recent similar result in \cite{mondino2024equivalence}. The last section of the article is dedicated to the discussion of various notions of Sobolev spaces in low regularity, as well as an alternative proof of the equivalence (see \cite{mondino2024equivalence}) between distributional Ricci curvature bounds and $\mathsf{RCD}$-type bounds, using in part the stability of the variable $\mathsf{CD}$-condition under suitable limits \cite{ketterer2017variableCD}.

Remarks about the mean value property and some weighted Poincaré-type inequalities

Abstract:We start providing a quantitative stability theorem for the rigidity of an overdetermined problem involving harmonic functions in a punctured domain. Our approach is inspired by and based on the proof of rigidity established by Enciso and Peralta-Salas, and reveals essential differences with respect to the stability results obtained in the literature for the classical overdetermined Serrin problem. Secondly, we provide new weighted Poincaré-type inequalities for vector fields. These are crucial tools for the study of the quantitative stability issue initiated by the author concerning a class of rigidity results involving mixed boundary value problems. Finally, we provide a mean value-type property and an associated weighted Poincaré-type inequality for harmonic functions in cones. A duality relation between this new mean value property and a partially overdetermined boundary value problem is discussed, providing an extension of a classical result due to Payne and Schaefer.

Abstract:The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of smooth closed surfaces with everywhere positive Gauss curvature. We use a reformulation that replaces deformation of an embedding by deformation of the metric inside the body bounded by the surface. The proof is obtained by studying derivatives of the Hilbert-Einstein functional with boundary term. This approach is in a sense dual to proving the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, that is rigidity with respect to the Gauss curvature parametrized by the Gauss map, by studying derivatives of the volume bounded by the surface. We recall that Blaschke's classical proof of the infinitesimal rigidity is also related to the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, but in a different way: while Blaschke uses Gauss rigidity of the same surface, we use the Gauss rigidity of the polar dual. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volume, as well as between both kinds of rigidity. We also indicate directions for future research, including the infinitesimal rigidity of convex cores of hyperbolic 3--manifolds.

Abstract:The origin of rigidity in disordered materials is an outstanding open problem in statistical physics. Previously, a class of 2D cellular models has been shown to undergo a rigidity transition controlled by a mechanical parameter that specifies cell shapes. Here, we generalize this model to 3D and find a rigidity transition that is similarly controlled by the preferred surface area S0: the model is solid-like below a dimensionless surface area of s 0 ≡ S 0 / V ¯ 2 / 3 ≈ 5.413 with V ¯ being the average cell volume, and fluid-like above this value. We demonstrate that, unlike jamming in soft spheres, residual stresses are necessary to create rigidity. These stresses occur precisely when cells are unable to obtain their desired geometry, and we conjecture that there is a well-defined minimal surface area possible for disordered cellular structures. We show that the behavior of this minimal surface induces a linear scaling of the shear modulus with the control parameter at the transition point, which is different from the scaling observed in particulate matter. The existence of such a minimal surface may be relevant for biological tissues and foams, and helps explain why cell shapes are a good structural order parameter for rigidity transitions in biological tissues.

Rigidity Results for large displacement quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We consider quotients of mapping class groups of orientable, finite type surfaces by subgroups whose action on the curve graph has large displacement. This class includes quotients by the normal closure of a pseudo-Anosov element, the mapping class group itself, and in view of forthcoming work of Abbott, Berlyne, Ng, and Rasmussen, also random quotients. First, we show that every automorphism of the corresponding quotient of the curve graph is induced by a mapping class, thus generalising Ivanov's Theorem about automorphisms of the curve graph. Then we use this to prove quasi-isometric rigidity under additional assumptions, satisfied by all aforementioned quotients. In the process, we clarify a proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. Finally, we show that the outer automorphisms groups of our quotients, as well as their abstract commensurators, are "the smallest possible".

Abstract:This paper investigates several global rigidity issues for polyhedral surfaces including inversive distance circle packings. Inversive distance circle packings are polyhedral surfaces introduced by P. Bowers and K. Stephenson as a generalization of Andreev-Thurston's circle packing. They conjectured that inversive distance circle packings are rigid. Using a recent work of R. Guo on variational principle associated to the inversive distance circle packing, we prove rigidity conjecture of Bowers-Stephenson in this paper. We also show that each polyhedral metric on a triangulated surface is determined by various discrete curvatures introduced in our previous work, verifying a conjecture in \cite{Lu1}. As a consequence, we show that the discrete Laplacian operator determines a Euclidean polyhedral metric up to scaling.
Are all Weakly Convex and Decomposable Polyhedral Surfaces Infinitesimally Rigid?

Abstract:It is conjectured that all decomposable (i.e. interior can be triangulated without adding new vertices) polyhedra with vertices in convex position are infinitesimally rigid and only recently has it been shown that this is indeed true under an additional assumption of codecomposability (i.e. the interior of the difference between the convex hull and the polyhedron itself can be triangulated without adding new vertices). One major set of tools for studying infinitesimal rigidity happens to be throughout the (negative) Hessian $M_T$ of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional. Besides its theoretical importance, it provides the necessary machinery to tackle the problem experimentally. To search for potential counterexamples to the conjecture, one constructs an explicit family of so-called $T$-polyhedra, all of which are weakly convex and decomposable, while being non-codecomposable. Since infinitesimal rigidity is equivalent to a non-degenerate $M_T$, one can let Mathematica search for the eigenvalues of $M_T$ and gather experimental evidence that such a flexible, weakly convex and decomposable $T$-polyhedron may not exist.
