Abstract:We prove that every three-dimensional polyhedron is uniquely determined by its dihedral angles and edge lengths, even if nonconvex or self-intersecting, under two plausible sufficient conditions: (i) the polyhedron has only convex faces and (ii) it does not have partially-flat vertices, and under an additional technical requirement that (iii) any triple of vertices is not collinear. The proof is consistently valid for Euclidean, hyperbolic and spherical geometry, which takes a completely different approach from the argument of the Cauchy rigidity theorem. Various counterexamples are provided that arise when these conditions are violated, and self-contained proofs are presented whenever possible. As a corollary, the rigidity of several families of polyhedra is also established. Finally, we propose two conjectures: the first suggests that Condition (iii) can be removed, and the second concerns the rigidity of spherical nonconvex polygons.

Abstract:Using spinors, we show a dihedral type rigidity for polyhedral initial data sets. This rigidity connects spacetime positive mass theorem, dihedral rigidity and capillary marginally trapped surfaces. Our method is to extend the rigidity analysis of spacetime positive mass theorem due to Beig-Chrusciel to the settings of a twisted spinor bundle.

Abstract:In this paper, we first give some new characterizations of geodesic spheres in the hyperbolic space by the condition that hypersurface has constant weighted shifted mean curvatures, or constant weighted shifted mean curvature ratio, which generalize the result of Hu-Wei-Zhou \cite{HWZ23}. Secondly, we investigate several rigidity problems for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space with constant linear combinations of weighted shifted mean curvatures as well as radially symmetric shifted mean curvatures. As applications, we obtain the rigidity results for hypersurfaces with constant linear combinations of mean curvatures in a general form and constant Gauss-Bonnet curvature $L_k$ under weaker conditions, which extend the work of the third author and Xia \cite{WX14}.

Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.

Scalar curvature rigidity of parabolic convex polytopes in hyperbolic space

Abstract:In odd dimensions, we prove a scalar curvature rigidity for parabolic convex polytopes in hyperbolic space enclosed by linear planes in the Poincare upper half-space model and convex with respect to the conformally related flat metric. Our method is based on spinor techniques and relies on the recent smoothing constructions of Brendle-Wang. We also prove a Llarull type rigidity for bounded smooth parabolic convex domains and a dihedral rigidity for polytopal initial data sets with dominant energy conditions.

Abstract:The inscribed radius of a compact manifold with boundary is bounded above if its Ricci curvature and mean curvature are bounded from below. The rigidity result implies that the upper bound can be achieved only in space form. In this paper, we generalize this result to asymptotically hyperbolic (AH) Einstein manifold. We get an upper bound of the relative volume of AH manifold and if we combine it with the recent work of Wang and Zhou, then the rigidity is obtained.

Abstract:For compact submanifolds in Euclidean and Spherical space forms with Ricci curvature bounded below by a function $\alpha(n,k,H,c)$ of mean curvature, we prove that the submanifold is either isometric to the Einstein Clifford torus, or a topological sphere for the maximal bound $\alpha(n,[\frac{n}{2}],H,c)$, or has up to $k$-th homology groups vanishing. This gives an almost complete (except for the differentiable sphere theorem) characterization of compact submanifolds with pinched Ricci curvature, generalizing celebrated rigidity results obtained by Ejiri, Xu-Tian, Xu-Gu, Xu-Leng-Gu, Vlachos, Dajczer-Vlachos.

Abstract: We prove that a hemisphere in the Euclidean space $R^{n+1}$, viewed as the graph of a function, admits no smooth perturbations as graphs with mean curvature $H\ge 1$ whose boundary equator is fixed up to $C^2$. This is an extension of the \emph{Mean Curvature Rigidity} phenomenon discovered by Gromov and Souam on non-compact totally umbilic hypersurfaces in space forms. The proof uses a Tangency Principle. On the other hand, we show that there exist nontrivial smooth perturbations with $H\ge 1$ on a great spherical cap whose boundary is fixed up to $C^2$. Similar results hold true for perturbations decreasing $H$, and for the $r$ mean curvature function $H_r$. This contrast between rigidity and non-rigidity is even true in the 1-dimensional case for circles and for discrete objects (polygons inscribed in a circle).

Abstract:Motivated by Guo-Luo's generalized circle packings on surfaces with boundary \cite{GL2}, we introduce the generalized Thurston's sphere packings on 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary. Then we investigate the rigidity of the generalized Thurston's sphere packings. We prove that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings are locally determined by the combinatorial scalar curvatures. We further prove the infinitesimal rigidity that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings can not be deformed while keeping the combinatorial Ricci curvatures fixed.

Convexity and rigidity of hypersurfaces in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

Abstract:We show that in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds $M^n$, $n\geq 3$, closed infinitesimally convex hypersurfaces $\Gamma$ bound convex flat regions, if curvature of $M^n$ vanishes on tangent planes of $\Gamma$. This encompasses Chern-Lashof-Sacksteder characterization of compact convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, and some results of Greene-Wu-Gromov on rigidity of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. It follows that closed simply connected surfaces in $M^3$ with minimal total absolute curvature bound Euclidean convex bodies, as stated by M. Gromov in 1985. The proofs employ the Gauss-Codazzi equations, a generalization of Schur comparison theorem to CAT($k$) spaces, and other techniques from Alexandrov geometry outlined by A. Petrunin.

Abstract:In Riemannian geometry, the Cheng's maximal diameter rigidity theorem says that if a complete $n$-manifold $M$ of Ricci curvature, $\operatorname{Ric}_M\ge (n-1)$, has the maximal diameter $\pi$, then $M$ is isometric to the unit sphere $S^n_1$. The main result in this paper is a quantitative maximal diameter rigidity: if $M$ satisfies that $\operatorname{Ric}_M\ge n-1$, $\operatorname{diam}(M)\approx \pi$, and the Riemannian universal cover of every metric ball in $M$ of a definite radius satisfies a Riefenberg condition, then $M$ is diffeomorphic and bi-Hölder close to $S^n_1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the rigidity of Q-curvature. Specifically, we consider a closed, oriented $n$-dimensional ($n\geq6$) Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and prove the following results under the condition $\int_{M} \nabla R\cdot\nabla \mathrm{Q}\mathrm{d} V_g\leq0$. (1) If $(M,g)$ is locally conformally flat with nonnegative Ricci curvature, then $(M,g)$ is isometric to a quotient of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $\mathbb{S}^n$, or $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$. (2) If $(M,g)$ has $\delta^2 W=0$ with nonnegative sectional curvature, then $(M,g)$ is isometric to a quotient of the product of Einstein manifolds. Additionally, we investigate some rigidity theorems involving Q-curvature about hypersurfaces in simply-connected space forms. We also show the uniqueness of metrics with constant scalar curvature and constant Q-curvature in a fixed conformal class.
