Abstract:The self-repelling random walk with directed edges was introduced by Tóth and Vető in 2008 as a nearest-neighbor random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ that is non-Markovian: at each step, the probability to cross a directed edge depends on the number of previous crossings of this directed edge. Tóth and Vető found this walk to have a very peculiar behavior, and conjectured that, denoting the walk by $(X_m)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$, for any $t \geq 0$ the quantity $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor}$ converges in distribution to a non-trivial limit when $N$ tends to $+\infty$, but the process $(\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor})_{t \geq 0}$ does not converge in distribution. In this paper, we prove not only that $(\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor})_{t \geq 0}$ admits no limit in distribution in the standard Skorohod topology, but more importantly that the trajectories of the random walk still satisfy another limit theorem, of a new kind. Indeed, we show that for $n$ suitably smaller than $N$ and $T_N$ in a large family of stopping times, the process $(\frac{1}{n}(X_{T_N+tn^{3/2}}-X_{T_N}))_{t \geq 0}$ admits a non-trivial limit in distribution. The proof partly relies on combinations of reflected and absorbed Brownian motions which may be interesting in their own right.

Abstract:We consider a random walk on a random graph (V, E), where V is the set of open sites under i.i.d. Bernoulli site percolation on the d-dimensional integer set Z(d) with d>2, and the transition probabilities of the walk are generated by i.i.d. random conductances (positive numbers) assigned to the edges in E. This random walk in random environments has long range jumps and is reversible. We prove the quenched invariance principle for this walk when the random conductances are unbounded from above but uniformly bounded from zero by taking the corrector approach. To this end, we prove a metric comparison between the graph metric and the Euclidean metric on the graph (V, E), an estimation of a first-passage percolation and an almost surely weighted Poincare inequality on (V, E), which are used to prove the quenched heat kernel estimations for the random walk.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the corrector method we give another proof of the quenched invariance principle for the random walk on the infinite random graph generated by a one-dimensional long-range percolation under the conditions that the connection probability p(1)=1 and the percolation exponent s>2. The key step of the proof is the construction of the corrector. We show that the corrector can be constructed under either s∈(2,3] or s>3, though the corresponding underlying measures may be different. As an application of the main result we get a new lower bound of the quenched diagonal transition probability for the random walk.

Abstract:We show a central limit theorem for random walk on a Galton-Watson tree, when the edges of the tree are assigned randomly uniformly elliptic conductances. When a positive fraction of edges is assigned a small conductance $\varepsilon$, we study the behavior of the limiting variance as $\varepsilon\to 0$. Provided that the tree formed by larger conductances is supercritical, the variance is nonvanishing as $\varepsilon\to 0$, which implies that the slowdown induced by the $\varepsilon$-edges is not too strong. The proof utilizes a specific regeneration structure, which leads to escape estimates uniform in $\varepsilon$.

Abstract:Consider a simple random walk on a realization of an Erdős-Rényi graph. Assume that it is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) connected. Conditional on an eigenvector delocalization conjecture, we prove a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for the average target hitting time. By the latter we mean the expected time it takes the random walk on average to first hit a vertex $j$ when starting in a fixed vertex $i$. The average is taken with respect to $\pi_i$, the invariant measure of the random walk.

Abstract:We introduce a new self-interacting random walk on the integers in a dynamic random environment and show that it converges to a pure diffusion in the scaling limit. We also find a lower bound on the diffusion coefficient in some special cases. With minor changes the same argument can be used to prove the scaling limit of the corresponding walk in Z^d.

Abstract:There is a long history of establishing central limit theorems for Markov chains. Quantitative bounds for chains with a spectral gap were proved by Mann and refined later. Recently, rates of convergence for the total variation distance were obtained for random walks on expander graphs, which are often used to generate sequences satisfying desirable pseudorandom properties. We prove a local central limit theorem with an explicit rate of convergence for random walks on expander graphs, and derive an improved bound for the total variation distance.

Abstract:We study the minimal random walk introduced by Kumar, Harbola and Lindenberg. It is a random process on $\{0, 1, \ldots \}$ with unbounded memory which exhibits subdiffusive, diffusive and superdiffusive regimes. We prove the law of large numbers for the whole parameter set. Then we prove the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm for the minimal random walk under diffusive and marginally superdiffusive behaviors. More interestingly, we establish a result for the minimal random walk when it possesses the three regimes; we show the convergence of its rescaled version to a non-normal random variable.

Abstract:We study the so-called elephant random walk (ERW) which is a non-Markovian discrete-time random walk on ℤ with unbounded memory which exhibits a phase transition from a diffusive to superdiffusive behavior. We prove a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. Remarkably the central limit theorem applies not only to the diffusive regime but also to the phase transition point which is superdiffusive. Inside the superdiffusive regime, the ERW converges to a non-degenerate random variable which is not normal. We also obtain explicit expressions for the correlations of increments of the ERW.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative Russo-Seymour-Welsh (RSW) type result for random walks on two natural examples of random planar graphs: the supercritical percolation cluster in the square lattice and the Poisson Voronoi triangulation in the plane. More precisely, we prove that the probability that a simple random walk crosses a rectangle in the hard direction with uniformly positive probability is stretched exponentially likely in the size of the rectangle. As an application we prove a near optimal decorrelation result for uniform spanning trees for such graphs. This is the key missing step in this setup while applying of the proof stretegy of a previous article on universality of dimers ("Dimers and imaginary geometry." Ann. Probab. 48 (1) 1 - 52) where random walk RSW was assumed to hold with probability 1. Applications to almost sure Gaussian free field scaling limit for dimers on Temperleyan type modification on such graphs are also discussed.

Abstract:We study limit laws for simple random walks on supercritical long-range percolation clusters on the integer lattice. For the long range percolation model, the probability that two vertices are connected behaves asymptotically as a negative power of distance between them. We prove that the scaling limit of simple random walk on the infinite component converges to an isotropic alpha-stable Levy process. This complements the work of Crawford and Sly, who proved the corresponding result for alpha between 0 and 1. The convergence holds in both the quenched and annealed senses.

Abstract:In this work we extend the quenched local limit theorem obtained by the authors in [BBDS23]. More precisely, we consider a directed random walk on the backbone of the supercritical oriented percolation cluster in dimensions $d+1$ with $d\geq 1$ being the spatial dimension. In [BBDS23] an annealed local central limit theorem was proven for all $d\geq 1$ and a quenched local limit theorem under the assumption $d\geq 3$. Here we show that the latter result also holds for all $d \ge 1$.

Abstract:We investigate a model of continuous-time simple random walk paths in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ undergoing two competing interactions: an attractive one towards the large values of a random potential, and a self-repellent one in the spirit of the well-known weakly self-avoiding random walk. We take the potential to be i.i.d.~Pareto-distributed with parameter $\alpha>d$, and we tune the strength of the interactions in such a way that they both contribute on the same scale as $t\to\infty$. Our main results are (1) the identification of the logarithmic asymptotics of the partition function of the model in terms of a random variational formula, and, (2) the identification of the path behaviour that gives the overwhelming contribution to the partition function for $\alpha>2d$: the random-walk path follows an optimal trajectory that visits each of a finite number of random lattice sites for a positive random fraction of time. We prove a law of large numbers for this behaviour, i.e., that all other path behaviours give strictly less contribution to the partition function. The joint distribution of the variational problem and of the optimal path can be expressed in terms of a limiting Poisson point process arising by a rescaling of the random potential. The latter convergence is in distribution and is in the spirit of a standard extreme-value setting for a rescaling of an i.i.d. potential in large boxes, like in \cite{KLMS09}.

Abstract:We consider the cardinality of supercritical oriented bond percolation in two dimensions. We show that, whenever the origin is conditioned to percolate, the process appropriately normalized converges asymptotically in distribution to the standard normal law. This resolves a longstanding open problem pointed out to in several instances in the literature. The result applies also to the continuous-time analog of the process, viz. the basic one-dimensional contact process. We also derive general random-indices central limit theorems for associated random variables as byproducts of our proof.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new simple but powerful general technique for the study of edge- and vertex-reinforced processes with super-linear reinforcement, based on the use of order statistics for the number of edge, respectively of vertex, traversals. The technique relies on upper bound estimates for the number of edge traversals, proved in a different context by Cotar and Limic [Ann. Appl. Probab. (2009)] for finite graphs with edge reinforcement. We apply our new method both to edge- and to vertex-reinforced random walks with super-linear reinforcement on arbitrary infinite connected graphs of bounded degree. We stress that, unlike all previous results for processes with super-linear reinforcement, we make no other assumption on the graphs. For edge-reinforced random walks, we complete the results of Limic and Tarrès [Ann. Probab. (2007)] and we settle a conjecture of Sellke [Technical Report 94-26, Purdue University (1994)] by showing that for any reciprocally summable reinforcement weight function w, the walk traverses a random attracting edge at all large times. For vertex-reinforced random walks, we extend results previously obtained on Z by Volkov [Ann. Probab. (2001)] and by Basdevant, Schapira and Singh [Ann. Probab. (2014)], and on complete graphs by Benaim, Raimond and Schapira [ALEA (2013)]. We show that on any infinite connected graph of bounded degree, with reinforcement weight function w taken from a general class of reciprocally summable reinforcement weight functions, the walk traverses two random neighbouring attracting vertices at all large times.
