Abstract:Bowl-shaped 20-μm-diameter plasmonic whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators were fabricated from individual metals (Al, Ag, or Au) and organic materials, including the blue emitter terfluorene. Although the upper size limit for resonators using propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is generally the SPP propagation length ( ), the resonators that were fabricated with Al or Ag showed the required electromagnetic field amplification, despite the resonator sizes being two orders of magnitude greater than for both bulk Al and Ag (<1 μm in the blue region). To investigate the origin of the amplification realized in these resonators, we simulated and compared the values in bulk metals, slab-type waveguides, and the WGM resonators. The simulations showed that values that are as long as the WGM perimeters and the lower effective refractive indices in the WGMs play the main roles in overcoming the size limitations for these plasmonic resonators.
