Abstract:Using friction modulation to simulate fabrics with a tactile stimulator (i.e. virtual surface) is not sufficient to render fabric touch and even more so for hairy fabrics. We hypothesized that seeing the pile of the velvet darken or lighten depending on changes in the finger movement direction on the virtual surface should improve the velvet fabric rendering. Participants actively rubbed a tactile device or a velvet fabric looking at a screen that showed a synthesized image of a velvet which either remained static (V-static) or darkening/lightening with the direction of touch (V-moving). We showed that in V-moving condition, the touched surface was always perceived rougher, which is a descriptor of a real velvet ( ). Using electroencephalography and sources localization analyses, we found greater theta band [5-7 Hz] oscillation power in the left inferior posterior parietal lobule (PPC) in the Virtual velvet/V-moving condition as compared to both Real velvet/ V-static and Virtual velvet/V-static conditions . This result is consistent with studies that give a crucial role to the left PPC for visuo-tactile binding. The greater activity of the lateral occipital area found in the Virtual velvet/V-moving condition could have contributed to the emergence of a velvet more realistic representation.

Abstract:Wearable haptic devices are developed as key components to enhance the highly immersive metaverse experience. However, conventional haptic devices enabling the sensation and interaction with virtual objects are often constrained by their bulky design, tethered operation, and physical interference with the skin, especially when integrated with human hands. In this study, a cross-interface modification process that achieves the conversion of multilayered silk fibroin films from rigid to soft is reported. This modification is favorable for applications involving large angles and multiple degrees of freedom motions. By applying electrical current through silk-based electrodes and utilizing a self-designed circuit, virtual tactile sensations can be generated on the entire palm. The high flexibility, stretchability, tailorable modulus, and water permeability of silk substrates enable the electrotactile devices to maintain their functionalities without impeding fine movements and natural tactile sensations in the hand. This compact electrotactile system serves as a user's new interactive terminal through wireless communications. The intimate contact interfaces reduce the unstable adhesion commonly encountered in electrotactile applications, ensuring consistent sensation during hand motions. These materials design methods and integrated systems represent a significant advancement in fabricating and integrating large-area soft electronics. Abstract:There is a growing interest in using the tactile modality as a compensation or sensory augmentation tool in various fields. The Multichannel Vibrotactile Glove was designed to meet the needs of these diverse disciplines and overcome the limitations of current sound-to-touch technologies. Using 12 independent haptic exciters on each finger's back and on the palm, the device can convey acoustic information to cutaneous vibrotactile receptors with precise control of the location, frequency, timing, and intensity. A staircase method was used to model vibration detection thresholds at six frequencies (100, 200, 250, 500, 800, 1000 Hertz) for each actuator position (All, Thumb, Index, Major, Middle, Pinky, Palm) and both hands (Right, Left). No between hand difference was observed and all finger actuators provided consistent thresholds, except for the Palm which exhibited higher thresholds. Spatial summation effects were observed when all actuators were activated simultaneously. Detection thresholds significantly increased at 100 Hertz and above 500 Hertz. These findings confirm that the system provides uniform stimulation across hands and actuators. Overall, the Multichannel Vibrotactile Glove provides the freedom to send various acoustic features to individual actuators, providing a versatile tool for research and a potential technology to substitute, compensate, or extend sensory perception.

Abstract:Haptic displays play an important role in enhancing the sense of presence in VR and telepresence. Displaying the tactile properties of fabrics has potential in the fashion industry, but there are difficulties in dynamically displaying different types of tactile sensations while maintaining their flexible properties. The vibrotactile stimulation of fabrics is an important element in the tactile properties of fabrics, as it greatly affects the way a garment feels when rubbed against the skin. To dynamically change the vibrotactile stimuli, many studies have used mechanical actuators. However, when combined with fabric, the soft properties of the fabric are compromised by the stiffness of the actuator. In addition, because the vibration generated by such actuators is applied to a single point, it is not possible to provide a uniform tactile sensation over the entire surface of the fabric, resulting in an uneven tactile sensation. In this study, we propose a Pinching Tactile Display: a conductive cloth that changes the tactile sensation by controlling electrostatic adsorption. By controlling the voltage and frequency applied to the conductive cloth, different tactile sensations can be dynamically generated. This makes it possible to create a tactile device in which tactile sensations are applied to the entire fabric while maintaining the thin and soft characteristics of the fabric. As a result, users could experiment with tactile sensations by picking up and rubbing the fabric in the same way they normally touch it. This mechanism has the potential for dynamic tactile transformation of soft materials.

Describing the Sensation of the 'Velvet Hand Illusion' in Terms of Common Materials

Abstract:When sandwiching two moving parallel metallic wires between both hands, one often experiences an unexpected tactile sensation known as the "velvet hand illusion" (VHI). Researchers have revealed the optimal conditions for inducing VHI, while the subjective nature of VHI remains obscure. In this article, we conducted a psychophysical experiment to investigate the quality and magnitude of the illusory sensation felt during VHI. Participants were asked to evaluate the tactile sensation of moving wires by giving tactile adjective and intensity ratings of the illusory sensation. In the same experiment, for the sake of comparison, participants also rated the sensation for various common materials one may encounter in daily life. We found that, as the intensity of the illusory sensation increased, the tactile sensation became softer, wetter, warmer, and more favorable. We also found that, when a strong illusion was reported, the sensation was similar to those for leather and fabrics rather than metallic wire, which suggests that the illusion indeed changes the perceived material category. These findings provide a better characterization of VHI as well as a better understanding of tactile texture perception.

Abstract:A common and effective form of social touch is stroking on the forearm. We seek to replicate this stroking sensation using haptic illusions. This work compares two methods that provide sequential discrete stimulation: sequential normal indentation and sequential lateral skin-slip using discrete actuators. Our goals are to understand which form of stimulation more effectively creates a continuous stroking sensation, and how many discrete contact points are needed. We performed a study with 20 participants in which they rated sensations from the haptic devices on continuity and pleasantness. We found that lateral skin-slip created a more continuous sensation, and decreasing the number of contact points decreased the continuity. These results inform the design of future wearable haptic devices and the creation of haptic signals for effective social communication.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of two stimulation modalities (stretch and vibration) on natural touch sensation on the volar forearm. The skin-textile interaction was implemented by scanning three textures across the left forearm. The resulting skin displacements were recorded by the digital image correlation technique to capture the information imparted by the textures. The texture recordings were used to create three playback modes (stretch, vibration, and both), which were reproduced on the right forearm. Two psychophysical experiments compared the texture scans to rendered texture playbacks. The first experiment used a matching task and found that to maximize perceptual realism, i.e., similarity to a physical reference, subjects preferred the rendered texture to have a playback intensity of 1X-2X higher on DC components (stretch), and 1X-3.5X higher on AC components (vibration), varying across textures. The second experiment elicited similarity ratings between the texture scans and playbacks and showed that a combination of stretch and vibration was required to create differentiated texture sensations. However, the intensity amplification and use of two stimuli were still insufficient to create fully realistic texture sensations. We conclude that mechanisms beyond single-site uniaxial stimuli are needed to reproduce realistic textural sensations.

Abstract:Abstract Human-machine interfaces for capturing, conveying, and sharing tactile information across time and space hold immense potential for healthcare, augmented and virtual reality, human-robot collaboration, and skill development. To realize this potential, such interfaces should be wearable, unobtrusive, and scalable regarding both resolution and body coverage. Taking a step towards this vision, we present a textile-based wearable human-machine interface with integrated tactile sensors and vibrotactile haptic actuators that are digitally designed and rapidly fabricated. We leverage a digital embroidery machine to seamlessly embed piezoresistive force sensors and arrays of vibrotactile actuators into textiles in a customizable, scalable, and modular manner. We use this process to create gloves that can record, reproduce, and transfer tactile interactions. User studies investigate how people perceive the sensations reproduced by our gloves with integrated vibrotactile haptic actuators. To improve the effectiveness of tactile interaction transfer, we develop a machine-learning pipeline that adaptively models how each individual user reacts to haptic sensations and then optimizes haptic feedback parameters. Our interface showcases adaptive tactile interaction transfer through the implementation of three end-to-end systems: alleviating tactile occlusion, guiding people to perform physical skills, and enabling responsive robot teleoperation.

Understanding Continuous and Pleasant Linear Sensations on the Forearm from a Sequential Discrete Lateral Skin-Slip Haptic Device

Abstract:A continuous stroking sensation on the skin can convey messages or emotion cues. We seek to induce this sensation using a combination of illusory motion and lateral stroking via a haptic device. Our system provides discrete lateral skin-slip on the forearm with rotating tactors, which independently provide lateral skin-slip in a timed sequence. We vary the sensation by changing the angular velocity and delay between adjacent tactors, such that the apparent speed of the perceived stroke ranges from 2.5 to 48.2 cm/s. We investigated which actuation parameters create the most pleasant and continuous sensations through a user study with 16 participants. On average, the sensations were rated by participants as both continuous and pleasant. The most continuous and pleasant sensations were created by apparent speeds of 7.7 and 5.1 cm/s, respectively. We also investigated the effect of spacing between contact points on the pleasantness and continuity of the stroking sensation, and found that the users experience a pleasant and continuous linear sensation even when the space between contact points is relatively large (40 mm). Understanding how sequential discrete lateral skin-slip creates continuous linear sensations can influence the design and control of future wearable haptic devices.

Abstract:We mimic the mechanical response of touch mechanoreceptors by that of a gas cavity embedded in an elastic semi-cylinder, as a fingertip analogue. Using tribological experiments combined with optical imaging, we measure the dynamics and deformation of the cavity as the semi-cylinder is put in static contact or slid against model rough surfaces at constant normal force and velocity. We propose an elastic model to predict the cavity deformation under normal load showing that membrane mechanical stresses are anisotropic and we discuss its possible biological consequences. In friction experiments, we show that the cavity shape fluctuations allow for texture discriminations.

When Sandpaper Is 'Kiki' and Satin Is 'Bouba': an Exploration of the Associations Between Words, Emotional States, and the Tactile Attributes of Everyday Materials

Abstract:Over the last decade, scientists working on the topic of multisensory integration, as well as designers and marketers involved in trying to understand consumer behavior, have become increasingly interested in the non-arbitrary associations (e.g., sound symbolism) between different sensorial attributes of the stimuli they work with. Nevertheless, to date, little research in this area has investigated the presence of these crossmodal correspondences in the tactile evaluation of everyday materials. Here, we explore the presence and nature of the associations between tactile sensations, the sound of non-words, and people's emotional states. Samples of cotton, satin, tinfoil, sandpaper, and abrasive sponge, were stroked along the participants' forearm at the speed of 5 cm/s. Participants evaluated the materials along several dimensions, comprising scales anchored by pairs of non-words (e.g., Kiki/Bouba) and adjectives (e.g., ugly/beautiful). The results revealed that smoother textures were associated with non-words made up of round-shaped sounds (e.g., Maluma), whereas rougher textures were more strongly associated with sharp-transient sounds (e.g., Takete). The results also revealed the presence of a number of correspondences between tactile surfaces and adjectives related to visual and auditory attributes. For example, smooth textures were associated with features evoked by words such as 'bright' and 'quiet'; by contrast, the rougher textures were associated with adjectives such as 'dim' and 'loud'. The textures were also found to be associated with a number of emotional labels. Taken together, these results further our understanding of crossmodal correspondences involving the tactile modality and provide interesting insights in the applied field of design and marketing.
Thin Films on the Skin, but not Frictional Agents, Attenuate the Percept of Pleasantness to Brushed Stimuli

Abstract:Brushed stimuli are perceived as pleasant when stroked lightly on the skin surface of a touch receiver at certain velocities. While the relationship between brush velocity and pleasantness has been widely replicated, we do not understand how resultant skin movements - e.g., lateral stretch, stick-slip, normal indentation - drive us to form such judgments. In a series of psychophysical experiments, this work modulates skin movements by varying stimulus stiffness and employing various treatments. The stimuli include brushes of three levels of stiffness and an ungloved human finger. The skin's friction is modulated via non-hazardous chemicals and washing protocols, and the skin's thickness and lateral movement are modulated by thin sheets of adhesive film. The stimuli are hand-brushed at controlled forces and velocities. Human participants report perceived pleasantness per trial using ratio scaling. The results indicate that a brush's stiffness influenced pleasantness more than any skin treatment. Surprisingly, varying the skin's friction did not affect pleasantness. However, the application of a thin elastic film modulated pleasantness. Such barriers, though elastic and only 40 microns thick, inhibit the skin's tangential movement and disperse normal force. The finding that thin films modulate affective interactions has implications for wearable sensors and actuation devices.

Tactile Roughness Perception of Virtual Gratings by Electrovibration

Abstract:Realistic display of tactile textures on touch screens is a big step forward for haptic technology to reach a wide range of consumers utilizing electronic devices on a daily basis. Since the texture topography cannot be rendered explicitly by electrovibration on touch screens, it is important to understand how we perceive the virtual textures displayed by friction modulation via electrovibration. We investigated the roughness perception of real gratings made of plexiglass and virtual gratings displayed by electrovibration through a touch screen for comparison. In particular, we conducted two psychophysical experiments with 10 participants to investigate the effect of spatial period and the normal force applied by finger on roughness perception of real and virtual gratings in macro size. We also recorded the contact forces acting on the participants' finger during the experiments. The results showed that the roughness perception of real and virtual gratings are different. We argue that this difference can be explained by the amount of fingerpad penetration into the gratings. For real gratings, penetration increased tangential forces acting on the finger, whereas for virtual ones where skin penetration is absent, tangential forces decreased with spatial period. Supporting our claim, we also found that increasing normal force increases the perceived roughness of real gratings while it causes an opposite effect for the virtual gratings. These results are consistent with the tangential force profiles recorded for both real and virtual gratings. In particular, the rate of change in tangential force ($dF_t/dt$) as a function of spatial period and normal force followed trends similar to those obtained for the roughness estimates of real and virtual gratings, suggesting that it is a better indicator of the perceived roughness than the tangential force magnitude.

Abstract:Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex evokes tactile sensations whose location and properties can be systematically manipulated by varying the electrode and stimulation parameters . This phenomenon can be used to convey feedback from a brain-controlled bionic hand about object interactions. However, ICMS currently provides an impoverished sense of touch, limiting dexterous object manipulation and conscious experience of neuroprosthetic systems. Leveraging our understanding of how these sensory features are encoded in S1 , we sought to expand the repertoire of ICMS-based artificial touch to provide information about the local geometry and motion of objects in individuals with paralysis. First, we simultaneously delivered ICMS through multiple, spatially patterned electrodes, adopting specific arrangements of aligned projected fields (PFs). Unprompted, the participants reported the sensation of an edge. Next, we created more complex PFs and found that participants could intuitively perceive arbitrary tactile shapes and skin indentation patterns. By delivering patterned ICMS sequentially through electrodes with spatially discontinuous PFs, we could even evoke sensations of motion across the skin, the direction and speed of which we were able to systematically manipulate. We conclude that appropriate spatiotemporal patterning of ICMS inspired by our understanding of tactile coding in S1 can evoke complex sensations. Our findings serve to push the boundaries of artificial touch, thereby enriching participants’ conscious sensory experience from simple artificial percepts to highly informative sensations that mimic natural touch.

Abstract:Rendering tactile effects on a touch screen via electrovibration has many potential applications. However, our knowledge on tactile perception of change in friction and the underlying contact mechanics are both very limited. In this study, we investigate the tactile perception and the contact mechanics for a step change in friction under electrovibration during a relative sliding between finger and the surface of a capacitive touchscreen. First, we conduct magnitude estimation experiments to investigate the role of normal force and sliding velocity on the perceived tactile intensity for a step increase and decrease in friction, called as rising friction (RF) and falling friction (FF). To investigate the contact mechanics involved in RF and FF, we then measure the frictional force, the apparent contact area, and the strains acting on the fingerpad during sliding at a constant velocity under three different normal loads using a custom-made experimental set-up. The results show that the participants perceived RF stronger than FF, and both the normal force and sliding velocity significantly influenced their perception. These results are supported by our mechanical measurements; the relative change in friction, the apparent contact area, and the strain in the sliding direction were all higher for RF than those for FF, especially for low normal forces. Taken together, our results suggest that different contact mechanics take place during RF and FF due to the viscoelastic behavior of fingerpad skin, and those differences influence our tactile perception of a step change in friction.

Abstract:Abstract Compared to rigid materials, people have a distinct tactile perception when touching flexible materials. Moreover, adding micro-patterns to the surface enhances the tactile experience even further. This sensation arises from the physical stimulation of frictional behavior between the skin and flexible materials. Therefore, this study focuses on human fingers as the research subjects and employs flexible materials with micro-textured surfaces as frictional objects. A friction test setup is designed to conduct a series of finger friction experiments, and theoretical explanations are provided to elucidate the reasons for performance variations. Research findings show that as the normal load increases, the frictional force gradually increases while the friction coefficient decreases. The former is attributed to the expanding contact area, while the latter is due to the inconsistent rate of frictional force increment with the normal load. The impact of friction velocity is mainly caused by changes in the viscous forces generated at the liquid film in the contact interface and the energy loss in elastic hysteresis. On the other hand, the effect of surface micro-topography is primarily a result of the transition between partial contact and full contact modes under the influence of normal load, leading to alterations in the contact area. Overall, during the finger friction process on a flexible micro-textured surface, changes in contact area play a vital role in modifying frictional performance, with adhesive friction exerting a more significant influence than deformation friction. This study summarizes the variations in frictional performance parameters based on experiments and analyzes the effects of contact area changes and deformation friction mechanisms from a theoretical perspective, providing a theoretical foundation for exploring the genesis of delicate tactile sensations during friction.

SensoPatch: A Reconfigurable Haptic Feedback with High-Density Tactile Sensing Glove

Abstract:Haptic feedback is integral to the improved experience of prosthetic users and the reduction in prosthesis rejection. Prior studies have explored various methods to encode tactile information and deliver vibration feedback. However, a comprehensive study comparing performance across different stimulation locations and feedback modalities for wearable devices is absent and there is no test platform. This paper proposes an open-source reconfigurable haptic feedback system which incorporates 25 sensors and wireless communication to allow customized number of vibration motors, adjustable motor placement, and programmable encoding of tactile data to change feedback modalities. To demonstrate potential studies that can be investigated using SensoPatch, we conducted two experiments: 1) to assess the vibration discrimination accuracy on 3 body parts 2) to assess the effect of 6 methods of mapping tactile data to varying number of motors on object manipulation. SensoPatch utilizes low-cost off-the-shelf components, enabling large-scale comparative studies of feedback modalities and stimulation sites to optimize vibrotactile feedback and facilitate its deployment in upper limb prostheses.

Abstract:The use of vibrotactile feedback is of growing interest in the field of prosthetics, but few devices fully integrate this technology in the prosthesis to transmit high-frequency contact information (such as surface roughness and first contact) arising from the interaction of the prosthetic device with external items. This study describes a wearable vibrotactile system for high-frequency tactile information embedded in the prosthetic socket. The device consists of two compact planar vibrotactile actuators in direct contact with the user's skin to transmit tactile cues. These stimuli are directly related to the acceleration profiles recorded with two IMUS placed on the distal phalanx of a soft under-actuated robotic prosthesis (SoftHand Pro). We characterized the system from a psychophysical point of view with fifteen able-bodied participants by computing participants' Just Noticeable Difference (JND) related to the discrimination of vibrotactile cues delivered on the index finger, which are associated with the exploration of different sandpapers. Moreover, we performed a pilot experiment with one SoftHand Pro prosthesis user by designing a task, i.e. Active Texture Identification, to investigate if our feedback could enhance users' roughness discrimination. Results indicate that the device can effectively convey contact and texture cues, which users can readily detect and distinguish.

Abstract:Our sense of touch is essential and permeates in interactions involving natural explorations and affective communications. For instance, we routinely judge the ripeness of fruit at the grocery store, caress the arm of a spouse to offer comfort, and stroke textiles to gauge their softness. Meanwhile, interactive displays that provide tactile feedback are becoming normal and ubiquitous in our daily lives, and are extending rich and immersive interactions into augmented and virtual reality. To replicate touch sensation and make virtual objects feel tangible, such feedback will need to relay a sense of compliance, or softness, one of the key dimensions underlying haptic perception. As our understanding of softness perception remains incomplete, this study seeks to understand exploratory strategies and perceptual cues that may optimally encode material softness. Specifically, we employ methods of computational finite element modeling, biomechanical experimentation, psychophysical evaluation, and data-driven analysis. Overall, this work may aid in engineering the next-generation wearable haptic displays, which must be more tangible, compatible, and perceptually naturalistic.

Effects of Distributed Friction Actuation During Sliding Touch

Abstract:Friction modulation allows for a range of different sensations and textures to be simulated on flat touchscreens, yet is largely unable to render fundamental tactile interactions such as path following or shape discrimination due to lack of spatial force distribution across the fingerpad. In order to expand the range of sensations rendered via friction modulation, in this paper we explore the possibility of applying spatial feedback on the fingerpad via differing friction forces on flat touchscreens. To this end, we fabricated six distinct flat surfaces with different spatial distributions of friction and observed deformation of the fingerpad skin in response to motion along these physical samples. In our study, friction changes that occur sequentially along the sliding direction introduced little transitory spatial warping such as compression or stretching to the fingerpad, suggesting limited perceptual differences in comparison to 'classic' friction modulation. Distributing friction across the direction of motion, however, showed pattern-dependent shearing of the fingertip skin, opening avenues for new sensations and illusions heretofore unachievable on flat touchscreen surfaces.
