Abstract:As the folklore goes that our universe started about 13.7 billion years ago in a manner of a Big Bang as the mythical Hero PanGu cleft the sky from the Earth, the energy density and temperature were extremely high at the beginning yet without a particular point of explosion center, everything was uniform and isotropic on sufficiently large scales of spacetime, and the Universe continues to expand up to now. Soon after the very beginning, the temperature of our Universe dropped rapidly, several types of fundamental particles emerged in succession, processes of thermal nuclear synthesis in the early Universe largely determined the primordial element abundance distribution prior to the formation of first-generation stars in the Universe. At the onset of Big Bang of our Universe, there should exist quantum fluctuations in the energy field; such weak yet ubiquitous fluctuations carried over to the matter field emerged later were gradually amplified hierarchically by gravity, leading to the formation of material structural systems on various scales in cosmological spacetime (including superclusters of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, galaxies, globular clusters, stars, and planets and so forth). As the Universe expands, the temperature of a thermal electromagnetic radiation field trapped inside materials decreases; about 389 thousand years after the Big Bang, this thermal electromagnetic radiation field no longer interacts with matter but still carries the indelible imprint of earlier matter fluctuations. Based on the general theory of relativity created and formulated by Einstein (1915), Einstein himself (1917), Friedmann (1922), Lematre (1927), de Sitter (1932) initiated the theoretical exploration of modern cosmology. Hubble (1929) published the epochal observational fact that the receding speed of galaxies is proportional to their distances away from us. Based on cosmic elemental abundance and the physics of nuclear synthesis, Gamow, Alpher and Herman boldly conceived the physical framework scenario for a Big Bang Universe during 1940s to 1950s. While conducting microwave antenna research at Bell Laboratories, Penzias and Wilson (1964) unexpectedly discovered the remnant 2.7K cosmic microwave background radiation. After years of careful design and preparation, Mather and Smoot (from 1989 to 1994) led the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite experiment to accurately measure the blackbody spectrum and the anisotropy of feeble fluctuations; in recognizing their groundbreaking contributions,they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics of year 2006. During past 90 years, scientists voiced various opinions in competition, fighting each other fiercely, collecting relevant evidence, and creating various theories. Along with the persistent and comprehensive development of experiments on ground, at high altitudes and in space as well as the theoretical research, we are entering the era of precision cosmology.

Abstract:Alexander Friedmann and Georges Lemaître are undoubtedly the real fathers of Big Bang cosmologies. In this article I study the influences their work underwent due to some religious as well as anti-religious ideas. During his career Lemaître faced criticisms coming from non-believing scientists, who reproached him (wrongly) to have developed his primeval atom cosmology for conciliatory reasons. In the former case of Friedmann, we know that his 1922 proposal of a "creation of the world out of nothing" was criticized by Einstein for metaphysical reasons. The essence of such hostile reactions is the fact that presumably "good" scientific contents should not be influenced by religious ideas. Nevertheless, metaphysical and theological ideas can play an important role inside the science research processes, as an epistemological tool helping to clarify the use of some fundamental notions.

Abstract:During a series of experiments performed between 1907 and 1911, Domenico Pacini (Marino 1878-Roma 1934), at that time researcher at the Central Bureau of Meteorology and Geodynamics in Roma, studied the origin of the radiation today called "cosmic rays", the nature of which was unknown at that time. In his conclusive measurements in June 1911 at the Naval Academy in Livorno, and confirmed in Bracciano a couple of months later, Pacini, proposing a novel experimental technique, observed the radiation strength to decrease when going from the surface to a few meters underwater (both in the sea and in the lake), thus demonstrating that such radiation could not come from the Earth's crust. Pacini's work was largely overlooked. Hess was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936, two years after the death of Pacini, who had become a full professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Bari. The discovery of cosmic rays -a milestone in science- involved several scientists in Europe and in the United States of America and took place during a period characterized by nationalism and lack of communication. Historical, political and personal facts, embedded in the pre- and post-World War I context, might have contributed to the substantial disappearance of Pacini from the history of science. This article aims to give an unbiased historical account of the discovery of cosmic rays; in the centenary of Pacini's pioneering experiments, his work, which employed a technique that was complementary to, and independent of that of Hess, will be duly taken into consideration. A translation into English of three fundamental early articles by Pacini is provided in the Appendix.

Abstract:Who discovered the expanding universe? Was it Hubble, or Lemaître, or was it just the end result of a long series of investigations? In this article we summarise the main steps and contributions that led to one of the most exciting discoveries ever made, of which Lemaître was the principal architect. In 1927 he combined his dynamical solutions of the Einstein equations with astronomical observations to conclude that the universe is expanding. He derived the linear velocity-distance relationship and calculated the first numerical value of what later was called the "Hubble constant". His discovery paper of 1927 was written in French and in 1931 it was translated into English and published in Monthly Notices. However, the translation omits the section where Lemaître computed the "Hubble constant". Why was that done, and who was responsible? We do not speculate on this question, but present in a very condensed way the facts along the path of discovery. The documented details from primary sources can be found in our book "Discovering the Expanding Universe".

Abstract:Antonie (Anton) Pannekoek (1873-1960) is remembered as one of the initiators of the field of stellar atmospheres. A second part of his research concerned Galactic astronomy. He was convinced that the sidereal system was built up of clouds of stars in a smooth, low-density stratum. In addition there were dark clouds together with streaks with little or no extinction in between. Pannekoek looked at bright star clouds and estimated their distance from their contribution to star counts. He found values of tens of kpc, which would mean their distribution was similar in extent to that of Shapleys globular cluster system. Later he had to reduce his distance by a factor over two, and later still retract the method. He developed a rigorous method of estimating distances of dark clouds from modeling star counts off and on the cloud, preceding Wolf's quick and dirty method. He should have received more credit for this. He started isophotal maps of the northern and southern Milky Way, first from visual observations, later from photographic surface photometry using out-of-focus exposures. I compare Pannekoeks maps with detailed photographic surface photometry of the south by the group in Bochum and to the almost all-sky mapping by the Pioneer 10 spacecraft, free of zodiacal light, from beyond the asteroid belt. This shows Panneloeks maps to be surprisingly accurate. The legacy of Pannekoek in the area of Galactic research consists of his mapping of the structure of the nearby part of the Galaxy, the distances of dark clouds, and isophotal maps of the Milky Way. His other contributions turned out inconclusive or wrong as a result of his conviction, resulting from his many years of observing and mapping the Milky Way, that the nearby distribution is characterized primarily by more or less isolated clouds of stars and by dust restricted to isolated dark clouds and streaks.

Abstract:The recent literature of astronomy and cosmology has included a good many suggestions for "who first recognized the expansion of the universe?" with cases having been made for Lemaitre, Lundmark, de Sitter, Slipher, Shapley, Friedmann, Wirtz, and perhaps others. I touch on these but also mention others (some of whose names have not come down to us) who might reasonably be credited with some part of the basic idea, but conclude that "Hubble's Law" is the right choice ("because it was discovered by Lundmark" in accordance with Stigler's Law). Of course there are a couple of previously unsung heroes (Dose and Zoellner), and the discussion bears some traces of its origin as an after-dinner talk. The full context goes back to ideas from China and forward to the struggle to correct Hubble's erroneous value of his constant.

Abstract:We describe the implications of cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and galaxy and cluster surveys of large scale structure (LSS) for theories of cosmic structure formation, especially emphasizing the recent Boomerang and Maxima CMB balloon experiments. The inflation-based cosmic structure formation paradigm we have been operating with for two decades has never been in better shape. Here we primarily focus on a simplified inflation parameter set, {omega_b,omega_{cdm},Omega_{tot}, Omega_\Lambda,n_s,\tau_C, \sigma_8}. Combining all of the current CMB+LSS data points to the remarkable conclusion that the local Hubble patch we can access has little mean curvature (Omega_{tot}=1.08\pm 0.06) and the initial fluctuations were nearly scale invariant (n_s=1.03\pm 0.08), both predictions of (non-baroque) inflation theory. The baryon density is found to be slightly larger than that preferred by independent Big Bang Nucleosynthesis estimates (omega_b=0.030\pm 0.005 cf. 0.019\pm 0.002). The CDM density is in the expected range (omega_{cdm}=0.17 \pm 0.02). Even stranger is the CMB+LSS evidence that the density of the universe is dominated by unclustered energy akin to the cosmological constant (Omega_\Lambda=0.66\pm 0.06), at the same level as that inferred from high redshift supernova observations. We also sketch the CMB+LSS implications for massive neutrinos.

Abstract:The discovery of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in 1964 by Penzias and Wilson led to the establishment of the hot big-bang cosmological model some ten years later. Discoveries made in 1998 may ultimately have as profound an effect on our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe. Taken at face value, they confirm the basic tenets of Inflation + Cold Dark Matter, a bold and expansive theory that addresses all the fundamental questions left unanswered by the hot big-bang model and holds that the Universe is flat, slowly moving elementary particles provide the cosmic infrastructure, and quantum fluctuations seeded all the structure seen in the Universe today. Just as it took a decade to establish the hot big-bang model after the discovery of the CMB, it will likely take another ten years to establish the latest addition to the standard cosmology and make the answer to ``Cosmology Solved?'', ``YES!'' Whether or not 1998 proves to be a cosmic milestone, the coming avalanche of high-quality cosmological data promises to make the next twenty years an extremely exciting period for cosmology.

Abstract:The discovery of cosmic rays, a milestone in science, comprised scientists in Europe and the US and took place during a period characterised by nationalism and lack of communication. Many scientists that took part in this research a century ago were intrigued by the penetrating radiation and tried to understand the origin of it. Several important contributions to the discovery of the origin of cosmic rays have been forgotten and in particular that of Domenico Pacini, who in June 1911 demonstrated by studying the decrease of radioactivity with an electroscope immersed in water that cosmic rays could not come from the crust of the Earth. Several historical, political and personal facts might have contributed to the substantial disappearance of Pacini from the history of science.

Abstract:This article describes the life and work of French astrophysicist Evry Schatzman (1920-2010). He was a pioneer in the study of white dwarfs during the 1940s and was one of the proponents of the wave heating theory of the solar corona. He made important contributions to the fields of internal stellar structure, novae, mechanisms of acceleration of cosmic rays, the role of turbulent diffusion in stellar evolution and its consequences for the lithium abundance, and the rate of solar neutrinos. Schatzman is mostly recognized as the creator of the French school of theoretical astrophysics. Although he was not the first theoretician of astrophysics in his country, he was the first to have felt the need for a rapid development of this subject in France, and the first to teach it and to guide the path of many young researchers. Many of them became involved, and some leaders, in space science.

Abstract:The name "big bang" introduced by Fred Hoyle in 1949 is one of the most successful scientific neologisms ever. How did the name originate and how was it received by physicists and astronomers in the period leading up to the hot big bang consensus model in the late 1960s? How did it reflect the meanings of the big bang, a concept that predates the name by nearly two decades? The paper gives a detailed account of names and concepts associated with finite-age cosmological models from the 1920s to the 1970s. It turns out that Hoyle's celebrated name has a richer and more surprising history than commonly assumed and also that the literature on modern cosmology and its history includes many common mistakes and errors. By following the story of "big bang" a new dimension is added to the historical understanding of the emergence of modern cosmology.

Abstract:The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mapped the distribution of temperature and polarization over the entire sky in five microwave frequency bands. These full-sky maps were used to obtain measurements of temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background with unprecedented accuracy and precision. The analysis of two-point correlation functions of temperature and polarization data gives determinations of the fundamental cosmological parameters such as the age and composition of the universe, as well as the key parameters describing the physics of inflation, which is further constrained by three-point correlation functions. WMAP observations alone reduced the flat $$\Lambda $$ cold dark matter ($$\Lambda $$CDM) cosmological model (six) parameter volume by a factor of $$>$$68,000 compared with pre-WMAP measurements. The WMAP observations (sometimes in combination with other astrophysical probes) convincingly show the existence of non-baryonic dark matter, the cosmic neutrino background, the flatness of the spatial geometry of the universe, a deviation from a scale-invariant spectrum of initial scalar fluctuations, and that the current universe is undergoing an accelerated expansion. The WMAP observations provide the strongest ever support for inflation; namely, the structures we see in the universe originate from quantum fluctuations generated during inflation.

Abstract:The emission of 21-cm radiation from a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift is discussed in connection with the thermal and ionization history of the universe. The physical mechanisms that make such radiation detectable against the cosmic microwave background include Ly_alpha coupling of the hydrogen spin temperature to the kinetic temperature of the gas and preheating of the IGM by the first generation of stars and quasars. Three different signatures are investigated in detail: (a) the fluctuations in the redshifted 21-cm emission induced by the gas density inhomogeneities that develop at early times in cold dark matter (CDM) dominated cosmologies; (b) the sharp absorption feature in the radio sky due to the rapid rise of the Ly_alpha continuum background that marks the birth of the first UV sources in the universe; and (c) the 21-cm emission and absorption shells that are generated on several Mpc scales around the first bright quasars. Future radio observations with projected facilities like the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Square Kilometer Array may shed light on the power spectrum of density fluctuations at z>5, and map the end of the "dark ages", i.e. the transition from the post-recombination universe to one populated with radiation sources.

Abstract:We describe the pioneering contributions of Thomas K. Gaisser to the birth and development of particle astrophysics, a new field of research at the intersection of cosmic ray physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and particle physics that has emerged in the last few decades. We will especially focus on his studies of natural beams of neutrinos: those generated by the interactions of cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere and those emitted by astrophysical sources. Tom actively participated in the discovery of these cosmic neutrinos as well. His contributions also extend to gamma-ray astronomy, the study of the cosmic ray spectra and composition, and the modeling of cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere and in astrophysical environments. Tom invariably focused his research on the theoretical and phenomenological problems of greatest interest at the time, producing frameworks that transparently interpreted often complex data. These studies have been very influential and have shaped the development of the field.
