Abstract:On December 20, 2021, the website of Science News summarized "6 surprising records science set in 2021", including the oldest black hole discovered by astronomers. These new findings extend the limits of scientific research and the imagination of human beings. Here we present a brief introduction to the discovery of the oldest black hole in the early Universe and its importance in science, and give some prospects of the related studies in the future. Quasars are luminous active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in their centers, accreting the surrounding gas and emitting huge power. Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest SMBHs and the history of cosmic reionization. On January 14, 2021, in a paper appeared in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, an international team led by Dr. Feige Wang, Dr. Jinyi Yang and Prof. Xiaohui Fan at University of Arizona reported the discovery of a luminous quasar J0313-1806 at redshift 7.64. This discovery breaks the former redshift record, 7.54 for the quasar J1342+0928, making J0313-1806 the most distant quasar discovered so far, with a distance of about 13 billion light years from us. The near-infrared spectra taken with several largest ground based telescopes reveal the existence of a black hole of 1.6 billion solar masses in the center of J0313-1806. It becomes the oldest black hole in the early Universe, with the age of only 670 million years after the Big Bang. How can a black hole grow to 1.6 billion solar masses within 670 million years (only about 5% of the universe's current age)? The discovery of the oldest black hole provides the most serious challenge to the current understanding of the black hole formation and growth. SMBHs are thought to grow from smaller seed black holes that accrete the surrounding matter. The popular idea is that the seed black holes formed through the collapse of the first generation massive stars (or population III stars), but this can only make the seed black holes up to a few hundred solar masses in most cases, or up to a few thousand solar masses for the extreme cases in the dense stellar clusters. However, even if we assume that J0313-1806's seed black hole grew as fast as possible, it would have needed a starting mass of at least 10000 solar masses at redshift 30. Among the theoretical models currently known, only the direct collapse black hole (DCBH) model involving the vast amounts of primordial cold hydrogen gas can provide a possible explanation. In addition, J0313-1806 also shows many important features. The rest-frame UV spectrum exhibits broad absorption troughs, which are thought to be produced by the extremely high-velocity outflows launched from the accretion disk around the central black hole. These outflows have a maximum velocity up to 20% of the speed of light, and can provide strong feedbacks to affect the star formation in the quasar host galaxy due to the extremely high kinetic power. J0313-1806's host galaxy has a very rapid star formation process, with the star formation rate 200 times higher than the Milky Way. Together with its huge luminosity of 36 trillion times higher than the Sun, J0313-1806 has become one of the most important targets to study the formation and growth of the supermassive black holes, as well as their influences on the host galaxies in the early Universe. There will be more observations on the oldest black hole in the near future. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was successfully launched on December 25, 2021. The team who discovered the oldest black hole has been awarded the JWST time of more than two hundred hours. More surprising discoveries are expected to be revealed by the future JWST observations on the most distant black holes, galaxies and quasars in the epoch of cosmic reionization.

Abstract:We present low-frequency, GMRT (Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope) observations at 333 and 617 MHz of the most-distant giant quasar, J1432+158, which is at a redshift of 1.005. The radio source has a total angular extent of 168 arcsec, corresponding to a projected linear size of 1.35 Mpc. This makes it presently the largest single object observed beyond a redshift of one. The objectives of the GMRT observations were to investigate the possibility of detecting a bridge of emission at low frequencies, which may be suppressed due to inverse-Compton losses against the cosmic microwave background radiation. We detect a jet-like structure connecting the core to the western hotspot, while the eastern hotspot is found to be largely tail-less with no significant bridge emission. The estimated life-time for the radiating electrons in the tail of the western lobe appears smaller than the travel time of the radiating particles from the hotspot, suggesting either in-situ acceleration or dissipation of energy by the jet at this location. The pressure of the intergalactic medium at $z\sim1$ estimated from the minimum energy density calculations appears to be marginally lower than the value extrapolated from nearby giant radio galaxies.

Abstract:The most powerful persistent accelerators in the Universe are jetted active galaxies. Blazars, galaxies whose jets are directed towards Earth, dominate the extragalactic gamma-ray sky. Still, most of the highest-energy particle accelerators likely elude detection. These extreme blazars, whose radiated energy can peak beyond 10 TeV, are ideal targets to study particle acceleration and radiative processes, and may provide links to cosmic rays and astrophysical neutrinos. The growing number of extreme blazars observed at TeV energies has been critical for the emergence of gamma-ray cosmology, including measurements of the extragalactic background light, tight bounds on the intergalactic magnetic field, and constraints on exotic physics at energies inaccessible with human-made accelerators. Tremendous progress has been achieved over the past decade, which bodes well for the future, particularly with the deployment of the Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Detecting highly-dispersed bursts with next-generation radio telescopes

Abstract:Recently, there have been reports of six bright, dispersed bursts of coherent radio emission found in pulsar surveys with the Parkes Multi-beam Receiver. Not much is known about the progenitors of these bursts, but they are highly-energetic, and probably of extragalactic origin. Their properties suggest extreme environments and interesting physics, but in order to understand and study these events, more examples need to be found. Fortunately, the recent boom in radio astronomy means many 'next-generation' radio telescopes are set to begin observing in the near future. In this paper we discuss the prospects of detecting short extragalactic bursts, in both beamformed and imaging data, using these instruments. We find that often the volume of space probed by radio surveys of fast transients is limited by the dispersion measure (DM) of the source, rather than its physical distance (although the two quantities are related). This effect is larger for low-frequency telescopes, where propagation effects are more prominent, but, their larger fields-of-view are often enough to compensate for this. Our simulations suggest that the low-frequency component of SKA1 could find an extragalactic burst every hour. We also show that if the sensitivity of the telescope is above a certain threshold, imaging surveys may prove more fruitful than beamformed surveys in finding these sorts of transients.

Abstract:A fundamental quest of modern astronomy is to locate the earliest galaxies and study how they influenced the intergalactic medium a few hundred million years after the Big Bang1–3. The abundance of star-forming galaxies is known to decline4,5 from redshifts of about 6 to 10, but a key question is the extent of star formation at even earlier times, corresponding to the period when the first galaxies might have emerged. Here we report spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD16, a gravitationally lensed galaxy observed when the Universe was less than four per cent of its present age. We detect an emission line of doubly ionized oxygen at a redshift of 9.1096 ± 0.0006, with an uncertainty of one standard deviation. This precisely determined redshift indicates that the red rest-frame optical colour arises from a dominant stellar component that formed about 250 million years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of about 15. Our results indicate that it may be possible to detect such early episodes of star formation in similar galaxies with future telescopes.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are immensely energetic millisecond-duration radio pulses. Observations indicate that nearby FRBs can be produced by old stellar populations, as suggested by the localization of the repeating source FRB 20200120E in a globular cluster of M81. Nevertheless, the burst energies of FRB 20200120E are significantly smaller than those of other cosmological FRBs, even falling below the energy of the Galactic event FRB 20200428. Here, we report the detection of a bright burst from FRB 20200120E in 1.1 -- 1.7 GHz, with a fluence of about 30 Jy ms, which is more than 42 times larger than the previously detected bursts near 1.4 GHz frequency. It reaches one-third of the energy of the weakest burst from FRB 20121102A and is detectable at a distance exceeding 200 Mpc. Our finding bridges the gap between nearby and cosmological FRBs and indicates that FRBs hosted in globular clusters can be bright enough to be observable at cosmological distances.

Abstract:Abstract Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the history of cosmic reionization. Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at z ≥ 7.5, due to a combination of their low spatial density and the high contamination rate in quasar selection. We report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.642, J0313−1806, the most distant quasar yet known. This quasar has a bolometric luminosity of 3.6 × 10 13 L ⊙ . Deep spectroscopic observations reveal a SMBH with a mass of (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 9 M ⊙ in this quasar. The existence of such a massive SMBH just ∼670 million years after the big bang challenges significantly theoretical models of SMBH growth. In addition, the quasar spectrum exhibits strong broad absorption line (BAL) features in C iv and Si iv , with a maximum velocity close to 20% of the speed of light. The relativistic BAL features, combined with a strongly blueshifted C iv emission line, indicate that there is a strong active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflow in this system. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations detect the dust continuum and [C ii ] emission from the quasar host galaxy, yielding an accurate redshift of 7.6423 ± 0.0013 and suggesting that the quasar is hosted by an intensely star-forming galaxy, with a star formation rate of ∼200 M ⊙ yr −1 and a dust mass of ∼7 × 10 7 M ⊙ . Follow-up observations of this reionization-era BAL quasar will provide a powerful probe of the effects of AGN feedback on the growth of the earliest massive galaxies.

Abstract:Neutral hydrogen (HI) is the primary component of the cool interstellar medium (ISM) and is the reservoir of fuel for star formation. Owing to the sensitivity of existing radio telescopes, our understanding of the evolution of the ISM in galaxies remains limited, as it is based on only a few hundred galaxies detected in HI beyond the local Universe. With the high sensitivity of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we carried out a blind HI search, the FAST Ultra-Deep Survey (FUDS), which extends to redshifts up to 0.42 and a sensitivity of 50 $\rm \mu Jy \cdot beam^{-1}$. Here, we report the first discovery of six galaxies in HI at $z>0.38$. For these galaxies, the FAST angular resolution of $\sim\,4'$ corresponds to a mean linear size of $\sim1.3\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc. These galaxies are among the most distant HI emission detections known, with one having the most massive HI content ($10^{10.93 \pm 0.04}~h_{70}^{-2}\, \rm M_\odot$). Using recent data from the DESI survey, and new observations with the Hale, BTA, and Keck telescopes, optical counterparts are detected for all galaxies within the 3-$\sigma$ positional uncertainty ($0.5\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc) and $\rm 200\,km \cdot s^{-1}$ in recession velocity. Assuming that the dominant source of HI is the identified optical counterpart, we find an evidence of evolution in the HI content of galaxies over the last 4.2 Gyr. Our new high-redshift HI galaxy sample provides the opportunity to better investigate the evolution of cool gas in galaxies. A larger sample size in the future will allow us to refine our knowledge of the formation and evolution of galaxies.

Abstract:We report on a ROSAT PSPC observation of the highly luminous z=4.72 radio‐loud quasar GB 1428+4217 obtained between 1998 December 11 and 17, the final days of the ROSAT satellite. The low‐energy sensitivity of the PSPC detector was employed to constrain the intrinsic X‐ray absorption of the currently most distant X‐ray detected object. Here we present the detection of significant soft X‐ray absorption towards GB 1428+4217, making the absorbing material the most distant matter yet probed with X‐ray spectroscopy. X‐ray variability by 25±8 per cent is detected on a time‐scale of 6500 s in the rest frame. The X‐ray variation requires an unusually high radiative efficiency η of at least 4.2, further supporting the blazar nature of the source.

A low level of extragalactic background light as revealed by gamma-rays from blazars

Abstract:The diffuse extragalactic background light consists of the sum of the starlight emitted by galaxies through the history of the Universe, and it could also have an important contribution from the first stars, which may have formed before galaxy formation began. Direct measurements are difficult and not yet conclusive, owing to the large uncertainties caused by the bright foreground emission associated with zodiacal light. An alternative approach is to study the absorption features imprinted on the gamma-ray spectra of distant extragalactic objects by interactions of those photons with the background light photons. Here we report the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the blazars H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232, at redshifts z=0.165 and z=0.186, respectively. Their unexpectedly hard spectra provide an upper limit on the background light at optical/near-infrared wavelengths that appears to be very close to the lower limit given by the integrated light of resolved galaxies. The background flux at these wavelengths accordingly seems to be strongly dominated by the direct starlight from galaxies, thus excluding a large contribution from other sources -- in particular from the first stars formed. This result also indicates that intergalactic space is more transparent to gamma-rays than previously thought.

Enhanced X-ray Emission from the Most Radio-Powerful Quasar in the Universe's First Billion Years

Abstract:We present deep (265 ks) Chandra X-ray observations of PSO J352.4034$-$15.3373, a quasar at z=5.831 that, with a radio-to-optical flux ratio of R>1000, is one of the radio-loudest quasars in the early universe and is the only quasar with observed extended radio jets of kpc-scale at $z \gtrsim 6$. Modeling the X-ray spectrum of the quasar with a power law, we find a best fit of $\Gamma = 1.99^{+0.29}_{-0.28}$, leading to an X-ray luminosity of $L_{2-10} = 1.26^{+0.45}_{-0.33} \times 10^{45}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ and an X-ray to UV brightness ratio of $\alpha_{\rm OX} = -1.36 \pm 0.11$. We identify a diffuse structure 50 kpc (${\sim}8^{\prime\prime}$) to the NW of the quasar along the jet axis that corresponds to a $3\sigma$ enhancement in the angular density of emission and can be ruled out as a background fluctuation with a probability of P=0.9985. While with few detected photons the spectral fit of the structure is uncertain, we find that it has a luminosity of $L_{2-10}\sim10^{44}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. These observations therefore potentially represent the most distant quasar jet yet seen in X-rays. We find no evidence for excess X-ray emission where the previously-reported radio jets are seen (which have an overall linear extent of $0.^{\prime\prime}28$), and a bright X-ray point source located along the jet axis to the SE is revealed by optical and NIR imaging to not be associated with the quasar.

Abstract:Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge1,2 since it was discovered that luminous quasars existed only 700 million years after the Big Bang3,4. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust5. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6 (ref. 6), a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of 7.1899 ± 0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations7 and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs.
FAST helps push the study of fast radio bursts into statistical regimes

Abstract:The 2007 discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs), bright and millisecond-duration astronomical radio pulses, presented to the astronomical community a tantalizing opportunity into the transient Universe. Understanding the origins, mechanisms and applications of FRBs is currently one of the most rapidly evolving sub-fields of astrophysics. Most FRBs originate from far outside the Milky Way and are many orders of magnitude more luminous than other known bursting radio sources, particularly pulsars (neutron stars). The total FRB population now stands at approximately 600 published sources, 24 repeaters, and 19 with localized host galaxies. Most FRBs appear to be one-off, only about four percent of the FRBs are now known to repeat. While the volume of observations grows at a breakneck pace, the overarching question of the field remains: "Where do FRBs come from?" Interestingly, FRBs can be hosted in a variety of galaxy types and environments. FRB 20121102 was successfully located in a low-mass and low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, coincident with a persistent radio source. VLBI observations have demonstrated that this source is compact. With the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), FRB 20121102 has been extensively observed, resulting in the discovery of 1652 independent bursts with a peak burst rate of 122 per hour and over three orders of magnitude variation in energy. For the first time, the burst energy distribution can be fully recovered and is found to be bimodal, suggesting that there may be more than one emission mechanisms or emission sites or beam shapes. In contrast to the single power-law energy distribution commonly found for FRBs, a characteristic peak in the burst rate energy distribution is found at 4.8x1037 erg. The estimated total isotropic energy, 6.4x1046 erg, released during the 47-day observational campaign, corresponds to approximately 38% of the available magnetar spin energy. Despite the high burst rate, no periodicity has been found. Higher time-resolution data, sustained monitoring, and better localization from the last 2-3 years have provided a wealth of information and significant discoveries regarding the origin of FRBs. A supremely bright FRB-like burst (FRB 20200428) has been detected from a Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 by STARE2 and CHIME/FRB. It provides strong evidence linking magnetars to sources of FRBs. The explosively growing number of FRBs and studies of individual FRBs start to reveal the source and radiation mechanisms of FRBs. Significant breakthroughs rely on the emergence of new observational facilities as well as a growing breadth of expertise joining the field. With ever-growing capabilities of observing facilities and processing power, the FRB sample in the next 5 years will supersede that of radio pulsars from the past half century. We are witnessing the unveiling of a dynamic Universe.

A new analysis of Fermi-LAT data reveals a significant (5$\sigma$), spectrally soft ($\Gamma \simeq$ 3.0) $\gamma$-ray source in a specific 4-month epoch, cospatial with PKS 0201+113 ($z$ = 3.64). Monitoring of PKS 0201+113 at 15 GHz by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory 40 m Telescope from 2008 to 2023 shows a prominent flare that dominates the radio light curve. The maximum of the radio flare coincides with the $\gamma$-ray flare, strongly suggesting an association ($\textrm{p-value}=0.023$) between the $\gamma$-ray and the radio sources. PKS 0201+113 is only the third $\gamma$-ray blazar to be identified with $z> 3.5$, and it is the first such object to be identified by the detection of quasi-simultaneous $\gamma$-ray and radio flares. The jet properties of this peculiar blazar have been investigated. A detailed study of a two-zone leptonic model is presented that fits the broadband spectral energy distribution. An alternative scenario is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The first detection and deep follow-up of a Galactic fast radio burst (FRB) phenomenon were reported in three papers published in the journal Nature in November 2020. Interestingly, this FRB is accompanied by a X-ray burst. The observations from multiple space and ground-based telescopes were combined to accomplish this discovery and ascertain its association with a source in the Milky Way. As the name implies, a FRB is a transient bright pulse of radio waves with a burst duration measured in milliseconds. This phenomenon was first discovered in 2007. It is extremely difficult to detect and even more so to determine their position in the sky due to their brief existence. This is the first detection of a FRB with radiation other than radio waves, as well as the first of its kind in the Milky Way. For the first time, these observations have confirmed that the source(s) of FRBs can be a magnetar(s), which so far is the only verified celestial body capable of producing FRBs. It is worth noting that one of the papers was written by a Chinese research team, the co-first authors of which are Lin Lin from Beijing Normal University, Chunfeng Zhang from Peking University, and Pei Wang from the National Astronomical Observatories of China. The observations came from China's "Sky Eye"-the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST).

Abstract:The ultimate fate of the Universe, infinite expansion or a big crunch, can be determined by using the redshifts and distances of very distant supernovae to monitor changes in the expansion rate. We can now find1 large numbers of these distant supernovae, and measure their redshifts and apparent brightnesses; moreover, recent studies of nearby type Ia supernovae have shown how to determine their intrinsic luminosities2,3,4—and therefore with their apparent brightnesses obtain their distances. The >50 distant supernovae discovered so far provide a record of changes in the expansion rate over the past several billion years5,6,7. However, it is necessary to extend this expansion history still farther away (hence further back in time) in order to begin to distinguish the causes of the expansion-rate changes—such as the slowing caused by the gravitational attraction of the Universe's mass density, and the possibly counteracting effect of the cosmological constant8. Here we report the most distant spectroscopically confirmed supernova. Spectra and photometry from the largest telescopes on the ground and in space show that this ancient supernova is strikingly similar to nearby, recent type Ia supernovae. When combined with previous measurements of nearer supernovae2,5, these new measurements suggest that we may live in a low-mass-density universe.

Abstract:GB 1508+5714 is a high-redshift blazar (z = 4.3), and a spectrally soft γ-ray source has been detected in its direction. By analyzing 11.4 yr Fermi Large Area Telescope data, significant long-term variability of the γ-ray source is confirmed. More importantly, a γ-ray emission flare appeared in an epoch of several tens of days in 2018, when the flux was about four times the value from the global fit. Meanwhile, optical flares were displayed in both the r and i bands from the Zwicky Transient Facility light curves. Detections of the simultaneous γ-ray and optical brightening provide decisive evidence to pin down the association between the γ-ray source and GB 1508+5714, which makes it the first identified γ-ray blazar beyond redshift 4. A broadband spectral energy distribution in the high flux state is constructed, and the origin of the multiwavelength brightening is also briefly discussed. Upcoming wide–deep–fast optical telescopes together with the γ-ray sky surveyors will shed light on the role that the active galactic nucleus jets play in the early cosmic time.

Abstract:We speculate that a new generation of particle astrophysics instrumentation will reveal the enigmatic sources of cosmic rays prior to the one hundredth anniversary of their discovery by Hess in 1912. While only a "smoking gun'' is missing for the case that the galactic component of the cosmic ray spectrum originates in supernova remnants, deciphering the origin of the extragalactic component is still at a level of reading tea leaves.
