Abstract:From Molecules to Materials: In the spirit of pursuing an interdisciplinary collaborative research at the chemistry—materials science interface for engineering cyclophane‐based functional systems and technologically‐relevant materials, few lessons learned based on the journey from molecules to materials and a portion of the accomplishments exploring small‐molecule organic emitters, polymer thin films and supra‐sensing through supramolecular host‐guest interactions (molecular self‐assembly) is shared. In the spirit of pursuing collaborative research at the interface of chemistry and materials science for engineering cyclophane‐based functional systems, the journey from molecules to materials and a portion of the accomplishments exploring technologically‐relevant small‐molecule organic emitters, polymer thin films, and supra‐sensing through supramolecular host‐guest interactions (molecular self‐assembly) is shared. This report highlights diverse research trajectories and the importance of active collaboration within the chemistry community. It is also intended to serves young scientists who are committed to research in interdisciplinary domains. This inspires fostering global research networks and promoting industrial−academic symbiosis that bring innovations to the education environment and curriculum by sharing mutual experiences, knowledge, and specialized skills which may cut across several inter‐related disciplines.

Small Molecule Crystallography in the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at ETH Zürich

Abstract:Abstract The development of small‐molecule crystallography in the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry (LOC) at ETH since its foundation by Jack Dunitz in 1957 is reported. We briefly review the scientific path of Dunitz before coming to ETH and subsequently illustrate research highlights until his retirement in 1990. Together with his doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, Dunitz developed X‐ray crystallography as a tool for studying chemical reactivity and reaction mechanisms, stereochemical, and in particular, conformational analysis, and supramolecular interactions. He hosted numerous leaders in the field in Zurich. After retirement, Dunitz remained highly research‐active. The crystallography facilities were run in 1991–2013 by his former coworkers Bernd Schweizer and Paul Seiler. In 2013, the Small Molecule Crystallography Center (SMoCC) was founded by merging the X‐ray facilities in inorganic and organic chemistry and its research‐driven service is illustrated.

Abstract:The French Society of Medicinal Chemistry or " Société de Chimie Thérapeutique " (SCT) was founded in 1966. Since its inception, its mission has been to promote knowledge in the main fields of pharmaceutical research and development, in particular the research and validation of biological targets of therapeutic interest, the screening, design and optimization of drug candidates, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, metabolism and toxicity. Since 1964, the Society has organized an annual international congress (RICT), and later thematic days for young researchers and workshops on specific topics. The SCT is also a member of the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) and organized the International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (ISMC) in Nice in 2022. Several new trends can be identified in the activities of the SCT, such as the organization of regular webinars, but also the recent creation of the Young MedChem Forum, as well as the distribution of a newsletter reporting scientific achievements in the French community and abroad, and an improved presence on social networks. These trends are in line with the current changes in the field in terms of scientific progress, means of communication in the community and with the public and inclusiveness.

Abstract:New binary catalysts formed by 1,1'-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(3-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea and a series of specifically designed flexible polyaza-macrocycles, prepared by a convenient iterative solid-phase synthesis and reduction, have been investigated for the Ring Opening Polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide. These systems, in the presence of benzyl alcohol as initiator, showed high activity delivering polylactides with high chain-end fidelity and controlled molecular weights with narrow dispersities. A detailed study of the structure–activity relationship for various polyaza-macrocycles, with different size and N-side chains, was performed. The best results were exhibited by cyclen derivatives, improving the performances achieved by the well-established triazacyclononane (TACN) co-catalyst. DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations, performed on each putative polyazamacrocycle/benzyl alcohol complex, assessed both the ring size and the N-alkyl steric hindrance roles on the initiator activation, providing a rationale for the activity scale experimentally observed for macrocyclic polyamines.

Abstract:New perspectives in GaI and InI chemistry: The salts of 'naked' M+ (M = Ga, In) ions with a weakly coordinating, fluorinated alkoxyaluminate anion have been isolated, and the stability of M+ with this anion in the coordinating solvents acetonitrile and diethyl ether has been demonstrated. The results will allow the coordination chemistry of M+ with weak ligands and the reactivity of M+ in standard solvents to be examined. The cover portrays these new possibilities as M+ hikers in a mysterious nighttime landscape. More information can be found in the Research Article by I. Abstract:Article summarizes over the 12 years of studies into organometallic nucleic acid components, which have been carried out in our laboratory at the University of Łódź. It focuses mainly on synthesis and chemical transformations, but the biological activity of the obtained compounds are also presented. This article serves also as a guide for future studies, as it emphasizes some goals in the field of organometallic nucleic acid components chemistry that have yet to be achieved.

Abstract:This Editorial celebrates the 70 th anniversary of the European Journal of Histochemistry since its foundation as Rivista di Istochimica Normale e Patologica , and introduces a Special Collection of selected articles on the application of the histochemical approach for investigating cell biological features and processes in animals and plants, and under diseased conditions. The year 2024 is a special one for histochemists, as 100 years ago J.W. Robert Feulgen and H. Rossenbeck introduced the histochemical procedure for the specific stoichiometric staining of DNA in histological samples: to commemorate this influential publication, three papers in the present issue are devoted to the application of the Feulgen reaction at light and electron microscopy, and in cytometry.
