Abstract:The characteristics for isothermal adsorption of CH_4/CO_2 for two coals of different rank(the No.11 coal from the Linnancang Mine and the No.9 coal from the Majiagou Mine) from the Kailuan coalfield of Hebei Province were studied.The abundance and variation of each gas in the adsorption phase were analyzed using the extended-Langmuir equation.The results show that the adsorption of CH_4/CO_2 mixed gas is a competitive adsorption rather than an independent adsorption of pure CH_4 and pure CO_2.The more CO_2 abundance in the CH_4/CO_2 miexed gas,the more the total amount of mixed gas being adsorbed.The favorable condition for the CO_2 adsorption in the mixed gas is the relatively high CO_2 abundance and high pressure.The favorable conditions for the CH_4 adsorption in the mixed gas for the two coals with medium and low rank are relatively high and low CH_4 abundance,respectively.The coal of low rank showed a stronger CH_4 adsorption than that of CO_2 and the coal of medium rank has a contrary adsorption of the mixed gas,indicating that the latter rather than the former is CO_2-ECBM suitable coal.
Nanoscale pore structure in anthracite coals and its effect on methane adsorption capacity

Abstract:Although significant amounts of methane are present in anthracite coal seams, coalbed methane resources cannot be extracted effectively and quickly. This study mainly focused on investigating the pore system and methane adsorption capacity to clarify the storage of coalbed methane. Anthracite coal samples from the Anzenan coalbed methane block in China were collected, and pore characterization methods (low-pressure N 2 adsorption, mercury injection experiments, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations) and methane isothermal adsorption experiments were conducted. The results showed that few mesopores and nanoscale macropores were present in the anthracite coal samples. The volume of the 2–300 nm pores in these coal samples obtained from the N 2 adsorption experiment was lower than 0.01 cm 3 /g. SEM observations also revealed that only a small number of mesopores and nanoscale macropores could be seen, and most of these pores were isolated. In terms of the methane isothermal adsorption data, it was found these anthracite coals have a large methane adsorption capacity, and the Langmuir volume ranges from 19.5 to 28.4 cm 3 /g, with an average of 22.2 cm 3 /g. With increasing ash yield, the Langmuir volume decreased linearly, indicating that methane molecules were mainly adsorbed in the organic matter of coal. As methane is mainly adsorbed in the micropores of coal organic matter and there are few mesopores and nanoscale macropores in the organic pores in coal, there are not enough tunnels to transport the adsorbed methane molecules to the outside. Thus, it is difficult to extract coalbed methane from anthracite. This study reveals the impact of pore system limitations on the storage and extraction of coalbed methane in anthracite coal. The findings can be applied to the extraction of coalbed methane from anthracite coal seams worldwide.

Abstract:By conducting research on the microscopic mechanisms of CH4 and CO2 adsorption in different rank coals, the CO2-enhanced coal bed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) technique can be further developed. In this paper, low-pressure N2 adsorption (LPGA-N2), low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LPGA-CO2), isothermal adsorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments, and molecular simulations were applied to analyze the mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the pore volume and specific surface area (SSA) of coal showed a U-shaped trend with the increase of metamorphic. The volume and SSA of the micropore were positively correlated with the ultimate adsorption volume, indicating that micropores were the main sites for adsorption. With the increased metamorphic degree, the aliphatic chains and oxygenated functional groups shed, and the aromatic rings polymerized. These changes in chemical functional groups directly affected the adsorption capacity of coal and indirectly affected the adsorption capacity by affecting micropore evolution. Compared with the CH4 molecule, the CO2 molecule had a smaller structure and a stronger intermolecular force, shown as the larger adsorption energy and closer distance to the coal molecule in the molecular simulation. These findings can provide the data and theoretical basis for the CO2-ECBM technique, coal bed methane extraction, and effect evaluation of extraction.

Abstract:To study the importance of the adsorption mechanism of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in coal for coalbed methane development, we aimed to reveal the influence mechanism of adsorption pressure, temperature, gas properties, water content, and other factors on gas molecular adsorption behavior from the molecular level. In this study, we selected the nonsticky coal in Chicheng Coal Mine as the research object. Based on the coal macromolecular model, we used the molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (GCMC) methods to simulate and analyze the conditions of different pressure, temperature, and water content. The change rule and microscopic mechanism of the adsorption amount, equal adsorption heat, and interaction energy of CO2 and CH4 gas molecules in the coal macromolecular structure model establish a theoretical foundation for revealing the adsorption characteristics of coalbed methane in coal and provide technical support for further improving coalbed methane extraction.

Abstract:CO2-enhanced coalbed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) has been demonstrated as an effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique that enhances the production of coalbed methane (CBM) while achieving the goal of CO2 sequestration. In this paper, the grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation is used to investigate the dynamic mechanism of CO2-ECBM in anthracite pores. First, an anthracite pore containing both organic and inorganic matter was constructed, and the adsorption and diffusion characteristics of CO2 and CH4 in the coal pores under different temperature and pressure conditions were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicate that the interaction energy of coal molecules with CO2 and CH4 is positively associated with pressure but negatively associated with temperature. At 307.15 K and 101.35 kPa, the interaction energies of coal adsorption of single-component CO2 and CH4 are −1273.92 kJ·mol−1 and −761.53 kJ·mol−1, respectively. The interaction energy between anthracite molecules and CO2 is significantly higher compared to CH4, indicating that coal has a greater adsorption capacity for CO2 than for CH4. Furthermore, the distribution characteristics of gas in the pores before and after injection indicate that CO2 mainly adsorbs and displaces CH4 by occupying adsorption sites. Under identical conditions, the diffusion coefficient of CH4 surpasses that of CO2. Additionally, the growth rate of the CH4 diffusion coefficient as the temperature increases is higher than that of CO2, which indicates that CO2-ECBM is applicable to high-temperature coal seams. The presence of oxygen functional groups in anthracite molecules greatly influences the distribution of gas molecules within the pores of coal. The hydroxyl group significantly influences the adsorption of both CH4 and CO2, while the ether group has a propensity to impact CH4 adsorption, and the carbonyl group is inclined to influence CO2 adsorption. The research findings are expected to provide technical support for the effective promotion of CO2-ECBM technology.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the adsorption properties of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 on anthracite. A molecular structural model of anthracite (C 208 H 162 O 12 N 4 ) was established. Simulations were performed for the adsorption properties of single-component and multi-component gases at various temperatures, pressures, and gas ratios. The grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo approach based on molecular mechanics and dynamics theories was used to perform the simulations. The results showed that the isotherms for the adsorption of single-component CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 followed the Langmuir formula, and the CO 2 adsorption isotherm growth gradient was negatively correlated with pressure but positively correlated with temperature. When the CO 2 injection in the gas mixture was increased from 1 to 3% for the multi-component gas adsorption, the proportion of CO 2 adsorption rose from 1/3 to 2/3, indicating that CO 2 has a competing-adsorption advantage. The CO 2 adsorption decreased faster with increasing temperature, indicating that the sensitivity of CO 2 to temperature is stronger than that of CH 4 and N 2 . The adsorbent potential energies of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 diminished with rising temperature in the following order: CO 2 < CH 4 < N 2 .

Abstract:In this paper we have simulated the competitive adsorption of CO2, CH4, and N2 gases in deep coal seams by building a graphite supercell structure and discussed the impact of pressure, pore size, and multicomponent composition on CH4 desorption. The results show that the adsorption capacity of a single component gas changes is in the order of CO2 > CH4> N2. For the CH4/CO2 competitive adsorption, absorbed CO2 can reach saturation at low pressure conditions. CO2 has an adsorptive advantage compared with CH4. It is shown that CO2 can promote the CH4 desorption by the displacement mechanism. For CH4/N2competitive adsorption, the adsorption capacity of N2 is weaker than that of CH4, demonstrating that improvement in coalbed methane (CBM) production by N2 injection is achieved by reducing the partial pressure and creating flow channels. The presence of H2O has a greater impact on the gas with a stronger adsorption capacity in the binary component system. For the CH/CO2/N2 competitive adsorption, the CO2 adsorption is dominant in 1 nm slit pores, while CH4 adsorption is dominant in 2 nm slit pores. This indicates that when the pore diameter increases, the CO2/N2 injection does not promote CH4 desorption. H2O also has a significant impact on the competitive adsorption in the ternary component system. The strong interaction between H2O and CO2 weakens the CO2 adsorption capacity.

Abstract:To reveal the effect of the molecular structure of coal on the gas adsorption ability of coal seams, this paper selects the high-quality bituminous coal in the Shenmu mining area of Shaanxi Province, China, as the research object. We changed the molecular structure of coal through pyrolysis experiments and studied the effect of changing coal molecular structure on methane adsorption capacity based on Langmuir adsorption equations, Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and liquid nitrogen adsorption. The findings of the experiments reveal that d002 reduces as pyrolysis temperature rises, but La, Nave, and Lc increase overall. The molecular structure of coal is restructured and layered, and the degree of polycondensation increases. Simultaneously, heating decomposes the active functional groups inside the coal sample, AC-O/Aar, ACH2/ACH3 and Aal/Aar decrease with the increasing pyrolysis temperature, and the aromatization degree of coal also deepens. The adsorption Langmuir constant a is well connected with d002, La, Nave, Lc, AC-O/Aar, ACH2/ACH3 and Aal/Aar. After high-temperature pyrolysis, A variety of chemical bonds in the coal sample are broken, resulting in the release of a substantial amount of light hydrocarbon, and then a large number of holes and cracks appear in the coal body, and the micropores are reduced, thus reducing the overall adsorption capacity of the coal. The findings of this study provide theoretical guidance for the development of new technologies to recover coal seam gas during mining.

Abstract:In situ gas content is an important parameter associating coalbed methane, while the influence of pressure and temperature on methane adsorption and desorption still needs to be revealed. In this study, the molecular structure and methane adsorption capacity of anthracite coal collected from Diandong Coalfield (China) were studied based on 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and methane isothermal adsorption experiment. The results show that the carbon skeleton of coal sample is mainly composed by aromatic carbon (72%), followed by aliphatic carbon structure (14.2%). Carbons connected to the oxygen atoms contribute 13.7% of the total carbons in coal molecule, and the oxygen atoms are mainly in the form of carbonyl. The 2-dimension structure and 3-dimension molecular structure of coal sample was also reconstructed. The average chemical formula of the coal molecule is C200H133O21N3. The experimental methane adsorption isothermal data of the coal sample under different temperatures shows that with increasing the temperature, the methane adsorption amount at each pressure decreases obviously. At 7 MPa and 20°C, the methane adsorption amount of the coal sample is 28.5 cm3/g. Comparably, at 100°C and 7 MPa, the methane adsorption amount is only 15.9 cm3/g, decreasing by 44%. In mesopores, temperature has stronger influence on methane adsorption under higher pressure than that of lower pressure. On the contrary, in micropores, temperature has weaker effects on methane adsorption at higher pressure than that at lower pressure. The results can be beneficial for understanding methane adsorption characteristics of deep coal.

Abstract:The adsorption kinetic characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in coal provide crucial information for increasing coal seam gas recovery. In this study, isothermal adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted using automatic high-pressure gas adsorption analyzer to reveal differences in adsorption kinetic characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in coal. The research shows that, before reaching adsorption equilibrium, the adsorption ratio of CO2 was higher than that of N2 while that of CH4 was the smallest. The initial adsorption rates of CO2, CH4, and N2 were 1998, 205, and 76 cm3 g−1 h−1, respectively. The order of decreasing gas adsorption rate with respect to the fluctuation zone was CO2 → N2 → CH4. Before reaching adsorption equilibrium, the gas adsorption ratio at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature. The adsorption rates (Rt) of gas were divided into a rapid decay zone (Rt > 0.1 Qe/h), slow decay zone (0.01 Qe/h < Rt < 0.1 Qe/h), and an adsorption equilibrium zone (|Rt| < 0.01 Qe/h). Among the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation, the Fickian diffusion model and the dynamic diffusion model, the latter can best describe the adsorption kinetic process of coal. This work is expected to improve the theoretical basis of enhancing coal seam gas recovery and enrich the theory of gas adsorption in coal.

Abstract:As an efficient and clean energy, coalbed methane development and utilization have deep significance in promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, molecular simulation was utilized to study the influence of N2/CO2 on the adsorption and diffusion of methane in coal under different gas injection methods and to elucidate the influence of varying gas injection methods on the efficiency of coalbed methane extraction, which provides a basis for the efficient development of coalbed methane. The results show that the adsorption effect of gases in coal decreases with the increase of temperature and increases with the rise of pressure, and the adsorption performance of the three gases in coal shows the law of CO2 > CH4 > N2. In addition, the injection of CO2/N2 had an obvious inhibition effect on CH4 adsorption, and the inhibition effect of CO2 was more significant, and the inhibition effect on CH4 adsorption reached the maximum when the two gases were mixture injected. In terms of diffusion, compared with separate injection, mixed injection of N2 + CO2 promotes CH4 diffusion more effectively, which can be reflected in the relative concentration distribution and velocity distribution. The injection of N2 helps to increase the porosity of coal, and the injection of CO2 and N2 + CO2 will lead to the decrease of porosity, but the mixed gas injection has less effect than the injection of CO2 alone.
An updated study on CH4 isothermal adsorption and isosteric adsorption heat behaviors of variable rank coals

Abstract:Understanding the gas sorption behavior of coals not only benefits for enhancing coalbed methane (CBM) recovery but also provides important insights for simultaneous coal and gas extraction. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the CH4 adsorption behaviors by a series of experiments and the applicability of different adsorption dynamic models in different rank coals (0.48-2.59% of Ro,m). Moreover, the isosteric heat and ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption in different rank coals were also analyzed. The results indicate that the fitting accuracy of different adsorption models is presented as Dubinin-Astakhov (D-A) model > Langmuir model > Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model > Freundlich model for different rank coal samples, and the maximum adsorption volume reaches the lowest value at the Ro,m of ∼1.4%. This phenomenon indicates that the CH4 adsorption in coals is a micropore filling or multi-layer adsorption process (especially in anthracites at high pressure stage) rather than a simple Langmuir monolayer adsorption process. Moreover, the CH4 adsorption process in coal samples can be divided into three stages: the low relative pressure stage (< 0.15 MPa), the medium relative pressure stage (0.15-0.30 MPa), and the high relative pressure (> 0.30 MPa). As the relative pressure continuously increases, the adsorption mechanism changes from the collision stage between pore surface and CH4 molecules to the intermediate stage of monomolecular adsorption and the multilayer adsorption stage. Through calculating the isosteric heat and ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption, the adsorption heat generally increases with the adsorption capacity increasing, and shows a positive correlation with the micropore surface area. The effects of micropore structure and surface area on the adsorption heat should be crucial in coals. These results may be significant for understanding the process of CH4 adsorption.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of H2S on gas adsorption in a coal seam, the adsorption characteristics of single-component CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S and multicomponent H2S mixed with CO2, CH4, and N2 by anthracite were simulated by using the Grand Canonical Ensemble Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The results show that the adsorption capacity of CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S in anthracite decreases with increasing temperature and increases with increasing pressure. The isothermal adsorption curves of CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S and different proportions of H2S/CH4, H2S/N2, and H2S/CO2 are highly consistent with the Langmuir equation, and the R 2 is above 0.99. Under different temperature and pressure conditions, the adsorption capacity of H2S and CO2 is stronger than that of coal for N2 and CH4, and the adsorption capacity difference is about 3 mmol/g. There is competitive adsorption among H2S, CO2, CH4, and N2, and H2S has a superior adsorption property. When H2S and other gases exist at the same time, the adsorption capacities of CH4, N2, and CO2 are reduced by 48-60%, 81-91%, and 51-66%, respectively.
Effects of nano-pore system characteristics on CH4 adsorption capacity in anthracite

Abstract:This study aims to determine the effects of nanoscale pores system characteristics on CH4 adsorption capacity in anthracite. A total of 24 coal samples from the southern Sichuan Basin, China, were examined systemically using coal maceral analysis, vitrinite reflectance tests, proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, low-temperature N2 adsorption–desorption experiments, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, and CH4 isotherm adsorption experiments. Results show that nano-pores are divided into four types on the basis of pore size ranges: super micropores (< 4 nm), micropores (4–10 nm), mesopores (10–100 nm), and macropores (> 100 nm). Super micropores, micropores, and mesopores make up the bulk of coal porosity, providing extremely large adsorption space with large internal surface area. This leads us to the conclusion that the threshold of pore diameter between adsorption pores and seepage pores is 100 nm. The “ink bottle” pores have the largest CH4 adsorption capacity, followed by semi-opened pores, whereas opened pores have the smallest CH4 adsorption capacity which indicates that anthracite pores with more irregular shapes possess higher CH4 adsorption capacity. CH4 adsorption capacity increased with the increase in NMR porosity and the bound water saturation. Moreover, CH4 adsorption capacity is positively correlated with NMR permeability when NMR permeability is less than 8 × 10–3 md. By contrast, the two factors are negatively correlated when NMR permeability is greater than 8 × 10–3 md.

The excess adsorption for N-2 belongs to the type I isotherm, while the adsorption capacity for CH4 and CO2 initially increased, followed by a sequence decrease with increasing pressure. The preferential ratio of the maximum in the excess adsorption for N-2 : CH4 : CO2 are 1 : 1.1 : 1.6, 1 : 1.3 : 1.8, 1 : 1.4 : 1.9, and 1 : 1.2 : 1.6 at 294 K, 311 K, 333 K, and 353 K, respectively. In addition, the excess adsorption capacity was predicted using the Langmuir + k and simplified Ono-Kondo lattice models. The Langmuir + k monolayer model has higher accuracy in modeling pure gas adsorption on coal, especially for CH4 and N-2. Moreover, the pressure decay method was used to analyse the adsorption kinetics of gases on coal. It is observed from the kinetics data that the adsorption rate and the effective diffusivity increase with the increasing pressure for CH4 at 0.55-6.97 MPa and N-2 at 0.63-10.05 MPa. However, for CO2, an increase in pressure reduces the adsorption rate and the effective diffusivity at 0.11-3.96 MPa due to intensive gas molecule-molecule collisions and the strong coal matrix adsorption swelling. The adsorption rate and the effective diffusivity with temperature are similar for the three gases, which increase with increasing temperature. Through verification of the experimental data, the diffusion model can be used to model the kinetics data of gases on coal under low and medium pressure conditions.

Abstract:Coalbed methane is released externally due to coal mining activities. Given its low concentration, which renders utilization challenging, China annually vents approximately 285 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane into the atmosphere, leading to significant energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions. To enhance the utilization rate of coalbed methane, mitigate these emissions, and promote a "green and low-carbon" energy supply, this article investigates pressure swing adsorption technology for purifying coalbed methane and analyzes the advantages, disadvantages, and application scopes of three processes: separation based on equilibrium effects, kinetic effects, and steric hindrance effects. The research findings reveal that equilibrium effect-based adsorption is particularly advantageous for purifying low-concentration coalbed methane, effectively capturing methane (CH4). Conversely, when dealing with medium- to high-concentration coalbed methane, methods leveraging kinetic effects prove more favorable. Within the context of equilibrium effects, activated carbon serves as a suitable adsorbent; however, achieving high-purity products entails substantial energy consumption. The methane saturation adsorption capacity of novel activated carbons has reached 2.57 mol/kg. Kinetic effect-based adsorbents, primarily carbon molecular sieves and zeolite molecular sieves, are characterized by lower energy demands. Currently, coal-based molecular sieves have achieved a CH4/N2 equilibrium separation factor of 4.21, and the amount of raw coal required to produce one ton of carbon molecular sieve has decreased to 2.63 tons. In light of the rapid advancement of intensive coal mining operations and the swift implementation of smart mine construction, there is an urgent need to intensify research on large-scale purification technologies for low-concentration coalbed methane. This will provide the technical foundation necessary for achieving "near-zero emission" of mine gas and facilitate the achievement of the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.

Abstract:The adsorption mechanisms of CH4 and CO2 on the coal surface is the theoretical basis for CO2 sequestration with enhanced coalbed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM). Molecular simulation is the main method to study the adsorption mechanism at present, but the model used in the process of molecular simulation could not accurately characterize the coal macromolecular structure. Therefore, we used in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to study the adsorption of CO2/CH4 on the aromatic rings and oxygen groups of coal. The results showed that CO2 and CH4 were physisorbed on the aromatic rings, and the aromatic rings represented the primary competitive adsorption sites for CO2 and CH4, CO2 was preferentially adsorbed at the top of the aromatic ring compared to CH4. Both carboxyl and carbonyl groups were beneficial for CO2 adsorption but not for CH4 adsorption. Compared to aromatic rings, the adsorption affinity of carboxyl groups for CO2 were stronger. The results of this study revealed the adsorption mechanisms of CO2 and CH4 on the aromatic rings and oxygen groups, as well as the impact of oxygen groups on the gas adsorption capacity, providing a theoretical basis for applying CO2-ECBM in the medium-volatile bituminous coal reservoirs.

Abstract:The microscopic mechanism of the competitive adsorption of CH4, CO2 and N2 in coal is the theoretical basis for enhancing coal seam gas recovery by injecting CO2 (CO2-ECBM). Based on this principle, this work used Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics to investigate the microscopic adsorption mechanism of single, binary, and ternary component gases in Wiser bituminous coal molecules. The adsorption mechanism was explored by changing gas composition and concentration. The comparison of adsorption separation coefficients suggested that CO2 had the highest adsorption capacity, whereas N2 had the lowest capacity. When the CO2 concentration in the gas mixture was high, the adsorption amount was large and the adsorption separation coefficient was small. This finding indicated that high concentrations of CO2 had negative effects on competitive adsorption. Energy changes were also evaluated. The potential energy between CO2 and the framework was the strongest among the two other gases. The inhibition of CH4 adsorption intensified with decreasing molar fraction of CO2. This phenomenon was explained from the perspective of heat of adsorption. As the molar fraction of CO2 in the adsorption system decreased, the heat of the isotherm adsorption increased. Meanwhile, the adsorption system became unstable and the capacity of CH4 adsorption on the framework weakened. Results provide a theoretical basis for the use of CO2-ECBM.

Abstract:The utilization of CO2 is extremely important to solve the environmental problems and coal spontaneous combustion in goaf. There are three kinds of CO2 utilization in goaf: adsorption, diffusion, and seepage. Since adsorption will consume CO2 in goaf, the optimization of CO2 injection amount is very critical. A self-developed adsorption experimental device was used to determine the CO2 adsorption capacity of three different particle sizes of lignite coal samples at 30-60 °C and 0.1-0.7 MPa. The factors affecting CO2 adsorption by coal and its thermal effect were studied. In the coal and CO2 system, the CO2 adsorption characteristic curve is not affected by temperature, but there are differences in that with different particle sizes. The adsorption capacity increases with the increase of pressure, while it decreases with the increase of temperature and particle size. Under atmospheric pressure, the adsorption capacity of coal is a logistic function relationship with temperature. Furthermore, the average adsorption heat of CO2 on lignite shows that the interaction force between CO2 molecules has a stronger effect on CO2 adsorption than the effect of heterogeneity and anisotropy on the coal surface. Finally, the existing gas injection equation is improved theoretically with CO2 dissipation, which provides a new idea for the work of CO2 prevention and fire suppression in goaf.
