Abstract:In this work the dielectric properties of 30% by weight aqueous monoethanolamine solution (MEA) were measured over the microwave frequency range [915–2450 MHz], for varying conditions of temperature and carbonation ratio. The Cole-Cole dispersion model was fitted to the experimental data to obtain the dielectric dispersion parameters, which were interpreted with the help of the Kent-Eisenberg chemical speciation model. Experimental results show the relative permittivity to be in the same range as distilled water, while the dielectric loss factor is found to be highly elevated such that resulting microwave penetration depths are in the order of few millimeters. Obtained dispersion parameters show the static dielectric constant to decrease with temperature, but to increase with carbonation ratio. The apparent relaxation time follows a similar behavior, higher temperatures allow for a faster relaxation, whereas the increase in carbonation ratio increases the viscous forces thus hindering relaxation. A broadening distribution of relaxation times was observed with higher carbonation ratios as absorption of CO 2 leads to a greater chemical heterogeneity as indicated by the speciation model. The static electrical conductivity of the CO 2 -loaded solutions is determined to be two orders of magnitude greater than unloaded monoethanolamine solutions, due to the increase in the concentration of the ionic species with carbonation ratio.
