Abstract:All-vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have the advantages of high safety and long life, and have broad application prospects in the field of large-scale power energy storage. Low energy density is the main factor restricting its development. In this study, the carbon felt used as the electrode was pretreated in various ways to improve the performance of the vanadium redox flow battery. The pretreatment conditions of carbon felt were compared to the performance of carbon felt after treatment at different temperatures and different times. The properties of the pretreated carbon felt were investigated and their effect on cell performance was tested.Next, by introducing a noble metal catalyst into the carbon felt, the characteristics of the carbon felt were studied and the effect on the performance of the vanadium redox flow battery was investigated. It was found that Carbon felt thermal-treated at 500 °C for 2 h showed the best characteristics and had the longest charge/discharge time and the lowest resistance. The results also show that Carbon felt with catalyst introduced without PTFE(Polytetrafluoroethylene) binder showed larger BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area and electrical conductivity compared to PTFE mixed, and cell performance was also excellent.

Abstract:Abstract The development of electrodes with high performance and long‐term stability is crucial for commercial application of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). This study compared the performance of VRFB with thermal‐treated and MXene‐modified carbon paper. To prepare the MXene, a modified‐etching process with ammonium−bifluoride (NH 4 HF 2 ) led to a mild and efficient conversion of the MAX‐phase to MXene compared to etching process with hydrofluoric‐acid (HF). Electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction studies revealed that the etching process with NH 4 HF 2 led to MXene nanostructures with a large interlayer spacing. The results show that at a current density of 60 mA cm −2 , the energy efficiency increased by 25.5 % when using a NH 4 HF 2 ‐etched MXene‐modified negative electrode, by 12.5 % with a thermal‐treated MXene‐modified electrode, and by 4 % with an HF‐etched MXene‐modified electrode, in comparison to the pristine electrode. The maximum power density of the battery was increased by more than 40 %. In long‐term cycling experiments the MXene modified electrode exhibited excellent stability over 1000 cycles of charge‐discharge, with 0.05 % discharge capacity decay per cycle, amongst the lowest values reported to date and four times lower than for thermally‐treated electrode. The superior performance was linked to the improved electrical conductivity and wettability, higher interlayer spacing, and lower charge transfer resistance for the V 2+ /V 3+ redox reaction.

Abstract:AbstractIn this work, Ti3C2TxMXene was investigated as a nanofluidic anolyte additive in vanadium redox flow batteries to improve the sluggish kinetics of V2+/V3+redox reaction. Numerous electrochemical tests under flow and static conditions were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of MXenes for VRFB applications. Pressure drop tests and morphology analysis were also conducted to better understand the hydraulic effects of MXene addition into the anolyte. The nanofluidic anolytes with the concentration of 0.10 and 0.15 wt% showed the best electrochemical performance, although the former induced less aggravated hydraulic effects within a reasonable pressure drop range. At a current density of 200 mA cm−2, the nanofluidic analyte containing 0.10 wt% MXene was able to utilize 67 % of the theoretical capacity. Contrarily, with the pristine anolyte, only 10 % of the theoretical capacity could be utilized due to excessive losses. Moreover, the energy efficiency up to 74 % is observed for the nanofluidic electrolyte, which is an increase of 25 % compared to the pristine anolyte. Primarily, the enhanced battery performance was attributed to the improved electrocatalytic activity towards the anodic V2+/V3+redox reaction. Furthermore, a dynamic, web‐like, flowing electrode network is shown to increase the mass transport capacity of porous carbon felt electrodes by creating additional, abundant, and electrochemically active surfaces within the pores.

Comparative Analysis of Thermal Activation on Felts and Continuous Carbon Filament Electrodes for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract:The impact of thermal treatment on continuous carbon filaments commonly employed in weaving and embroidery manufacturing techniques on vanadium redox flow batteries is examined. A comparative study with short fibers used in the production of felts is presented. Thermal treatments are commonly used to improve electrode kinetics in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). The impact of the widely adopted thermal treatment—400 °C for least 24 hours—was investigated on polyacrylonitrile (PAN)‐based continuous carbon filaments (tows) and compared to PAN‐based graphite felts. Surface properties were assessed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and wettability measurements. The electrode activity was investigated via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Charge‐transfer resistances and the constant phase element parameters related to the electric double layer were determined, revealing a correlation between enhanced electrode activity and increased double layer across all electrodes. An 8‐hour 400 °C thermal treatment was sufficient to improve electrode activity for tows, whereas felts required longer durations, up to 24 hours, attributed to differences in the carbonization process employed for each material, with the tows undergoing continuous processing and the felts following a batch process. Three‐electrode half‐cell EIS measurements were conducted to elucidate positive and negative electrode contributions. Activated continuous carbon filament electrodes exhibited consistent electrode activities in both the catholyte (VO2+/VO2+) and anolyte (V3+/V2+), whereas the electrochemical activity of felts was limited by the electrode deactivation in the anolyte.

Abstract:Vanadium redox flow batteries have applications for large-scale electricity storage. This paper reports the influence of carbon structural characteristics of sustainable walnut shell-derived carbons in carbon/polyvinylidene fluoride composite electrodes on vanadium redox reactions. Pyrolysis, gasification, and chemical treatment procedures were used to modify the structural characteristics of carbons. Carbon functional groups were modified by chemical treatment with HNO3, heat treatment with K2CO3, and high-temperature NH3 treatment. Carbon porous structures were characterized using gas adsorption studies. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the carbon molecular structure. Functional groups were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, acid/base titrations, temperature-programmed desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of carbon structure, porosity, and surface functional groups on the redox reactions of vanadium was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrical impedance spectroscopy. The VO2+/VO2 + and V2+/V3+ couples had well-defined peaks in cyclic voltammetry, with the former being the most intense, but the V3+/VO2+ couple was not observed for samples carbonized under nitrogen. The results show that V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO2 + couples observed in cyclic voltammograms were enhanced for carbonization temperatures up to 800 °C. Electrical impedance spectroscopy also showed impedance trends. The electrochemistry results are primarily related to changes in carbon structure and the catalysis of V3+ oxidation by surface functional groups in the carbon structure. The V3+/VO2+ couple was limited by slow kinetics, but it occurs on specific oxygen and nitrogen sites in the carbon structure. The oxidation of V(iii) to V(iv) only occurs on a limited number of surface sites, and the outer-sphere electron transfer to oxidize V(iii) takes place at much more positive potentials. The coulombic, voltage, and energy efficiency of the carbon electrodes were suitable for batteries.

Abstract:<p>Porous carbon felts (CF) are a widely used electrode material for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). These materials differ in their precursor material, thickness or graphitization degree and demonstrate broad differences in electrochemical performance. Prior to operation, an activation step, such as acid or heat treatment, is commonly performed to improve their performance. A thermal treatment in air functionalizes the surface of the electrode and improves reaction kinetics as well as the wettability of the electrode. In this work, pristine and heat‐treated carbon felts are compared regarding their electrolyte wetting behavior for the use in VRFB. Contact angle (CA) measurements were performed ex‐situ to investigate the effect of the heat treatment. Furthermore, the porous carbon felts were examined in‐situ with an in–house built flow cell regarding their invasion behavior with different types of electrolytes by X‐ray radiography. Additionally, the distribution of the electrolyte inside the felts was investigated by X‐ray tomography. The results demonstrate the effect of the heat treatment and choice of electrolyte on the wetting behavior and electrolyte distribution.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Carbon‐based electrodes are used in flow batteries to provide active centers for vanadium redox reactions. However, strong controversy exists about the exact origin of these centers. This study systematically explores the influence of structural and functional groups on the vanadium reactions at carbon surfaces. Pyridine, phenol and butyl containing groups are attached to graphite felt electrodes. To establish a unique comparison between the model and real‐world behavior, both non‐activated and commercially used thermally activated felts serve as a substrate. Results reveal enhanced half‐cell performance in non‐activated felt with introduced hydrophilic functionalities. However, this cannot be transferred to the thermally activated felt. Beyond a decrease in electrochemical activity, a reduced long‐term stability can be observed. This work indicates that thermal treatment generates active sites that surpass the effect of functional groups and are even impeded by their introduction.

Abstract:In our contribution we study the electrocatalytic effect of oxygen functionalization of thermally treated graphite felt on kinetics of electrode reactions of vanadium redox flow battery. Chemical and morphological changes of the felts are analysed by standard physico-chemical characterization techniques. A complex method four-point method is developed and employed for characterization of the felts in a laboratory single-cell. The method is based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and load curves measurements of positive and negative half-cells using platinum wire pseudo-reference electrodes. The distribution of ohmic and faradaic losses within a single-cell is evaluated for both symmetric and asymmetric electrode set-up with respect to the treatment conditions. Positive effect of oxygen functionalization is observed only for negative electrode, whereas kinetics of positive electrode reaction is almost unaffected by the treatment. This is in a contradiction to the results of typically employed cyclovoltammetric characterization which indicate that both electrodes are enhanced by the treatment to a similar extent. The developed four-point characterization method can be further used e.g., for the component screening and in-situ durability studies on single-cell scale redox flow batteries of various chemistries.

Acetylacetonate-modified TiO2 nanoparticles coated on the carbon felt as the negative electrode of vanadium redox flow battery for reducing HER and enhancing V3+/V2+ redox reactions

Abstract:The occurrence of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the surface of the carbon-based negative electrode of the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) causes high charge transfer resistance (RCT) for the desired V3+/V2+ redox reaction leading to irreversible capacity loss. To this effect, we have synthesized acetylacetonate-modified TiO2 (SGTA) and unmodified TiO2 (SGT) coating colloidal solutions as electrocatalysts for enhanced V3+/V2+ redox reaction on the carbon-felt negative electrodes of VRFB. The SGTA particles exhibit significantly higher homogeneity with sizes of ≤15 nm, in comparison to the severely aggregated SGT particles with diameters of ∼23-75 nm in colloidal solution. When coated on the pristine carbon felt (P-CF), the surface morphology of the SGTA@CF electrode exhibits relatively dense, uniformly coated particles, in comparison to the sparse, non-even coating of aggregated particles on the SGT@CF electrode surface. Consequently, the charge transfer for V3+ → V2+ reduction reaction and charge storage capacity are determined to be in the order SGTA@CF > SGT@CF > P-CF, confirming that the competitive and irreversible HER was higher on the surface of non-evenly coated fibers and bare carbon felt, respectively.

Abstract:The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the promising large-scale energy storage technologies. The electrode is one of the key components of the VRFB, and its design has an important effect on its electrochemical redox kinetics and battery performance. The ideal VRFB electrode material has high catalytic activity, good conductivity, and high stability. Carbon-based electrodes are the most commonly used electrode materials for VRFBs. However, its reaction kinetics and catalytic active sites are low. This paper summarizes the methods of carbon-based electrode modification of the electrochemical performance in VRFBs. Three representative methods including metal/metal oxide modification, nonmetal atom modification, and defect engineering for graphite felt in VRFBs are generally reviewed. First, metal and metal oxides have high catalytic activity, which can enhance the chemical reaction process of vanadium ions and greatly improve the reversibility of the redox reaction of vanadium ions. Then, nonmetal atom modification can generally improve the hydrophilicity of carbon-based electrodes, enhance the adsorption/desorption capacity of vanadium ions, and improve the reaction kinetics. Moreover, defect engineering can lead to the formation of the micropore structure on the surface and increase the specific surface area of the material, thus generating more redox reaction active sites. Finally, the development direction of electrode modification in VRFBs is prospected, and it is expected that this review will provide useful insights into the development of VRFBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The use of flow batteries for energy storage has attracted considerable attention with the increased use of renewable resources. It is well known that the performance of a flow battery depends, among other factors, on the properties of the electrodes, which are generally composed of graphite felt (GF). In this work, thermal, chemical and plasma treatments have been employed to modify the surface of the graphite felt to improve the electrochemical activity of the redox flow cell. The influence of the variables of each of these processes on the generation of surface functional groups and on changes in the obtained surface area have been examined. In this work, the kinetics of redox reactions relevant to the VO2+/VO2+ reaction have been studied with these treated electrodes and the relationship between the nature of the surface and electrochemical activity of the GF is discussed. As a result, an enhanced electrochemical performance (reduction over 200 mV of the separation between anodic and cathodic peaks and 110 mV of the onset potential) in comparison to the untreated GF is obtained for those GF treatments with low oxygenated groups concentration.

Abstract:We introduce a modified (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO)‐mediated oxidation (MTMO) to fabricate carboxylic acid functional group rich carbon nanotube (TEMPO‐CNT). Due to the milder functionalization characteristic of the MTMO, the TEMPO‐CNT has a uniform and low‐defected structural features, resulting in higher catalytic activity toward vanadium ion redox reaction compared to the conventional acid‐treated CNT (AT‐CNT). With that, the energy efficiency and discharge capacity of vanadium redox flow battery adopting TEMPO‐CNT demonstrates 11.0 % and 147.1 % higher values than those of AT‐CNT.SummaryModified (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO)‐mediated oxidation (MTMO) is introduced to fabricate low‐defected carboxylic acid functional group–rich carbon nanotube (TEMPO‐CNT) through facile and eco‐friendly chemical preparation. However, the intensity ratio of D to G band of TEMPO‐CNT is measured lower value (1.14) than that of AT‐CNT (1.29) in Raman spectra, showing the MTMO is the better strategy to functionalize carboxylic groups on CNT with the uniform structure and low‐defected feature. Furthermore, when the TEMPO‐CNT is utilized for the catalyst for VIRR, the catalytic activity increases to 2.11 (negolyte) and 2.03 (posolyte) times compared to AT‐CNT, and the reversibility of VIRR is also improved. These results attribute to the 41.6% lower charge transfer resistance than AT‐CNT, demonstrating that the low‐defected CNT structure of TEMPO‐CNT induced a facile electron transfer, resulting in the high catalytic performance. With that, the energy efficiency (EE) and discharge capacity of vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) adopting TEMPO‐CNT display 58.8% and 16.8 Ah L−1 even at high current density (250 mA cm−2), whereas those of AT‐CNT are only 52.3% and 6.8 Ah L−1. Regarding long‐term stability, the TEMPO‐CNT and AT‐CNT preserved 98.8% and 91.4% of retention rate in EE at 200 mA cm−2 for 200 cycles, respectively, indicating that the MTMO is the promising option to fabricate the catalyst to use in the practical VRFB.

Nanoscopic and Macro-Porous Carbon Nano-foam Electrodes with Improved Mass Transport for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract:Although free-standing sheets of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) can provide interesting electrochemical and physical properties as electrodes for redox flow batteries, the full potential of this class of materials has not been accessible as of yet. The conventional fabrication methods produce sheets with micro-porous and meso-porous structures, which significantly resist mass transport of the electrolyte during high-current flow-cell operation. Herein, we developed a method to fabricate high performance macro-porous carbon nano-foam free standing sheets (Puffy Fibers, PF), by implementing a freeze-drying step into our low cost and scalable surface-engineered tape-casting (SETC) fabrication method, and we show the improvement in the performance attained as compared with a MWCNT sheet lacking any macro pores (Tape-cast, TC). We attribute the higher performance attained by our in-lab fabricated PF papers to the presence of macro pores which provided channels that acted as pathways for electrolytic transport within the bulk of the electrode. Moreover, we propose an electrolytic transport mechanism to relate ion diffusivity to different pore sizes to explain the different modes of charge transfer in the negative and the positive electrolytes. Overall, the PF papers had a high wettability, high porosity, and a large surface area, resulting in improved electrochemical and flow-cell performances.

Abstract:The redox reactions of vanadium ions in sulfuric ,acid, which are used for anolyte and catholyte in a redox flow battery, have been investigated on a GRC (graphite reinforcement carbon) electrode. Two types of carbon fiber electrodes (GF-20 and BW-309) have been evaluated for the battery electrode. As a result, the BW-309 was found to be the best. Cyclic voltammetry has been used to estimate electrode reaction rate constants of the ions on a GRC electrode and two carbon fiber electrodes and to determine the suitable concentration of sulfuric acid for vanadium redox reactions in the battery. A charge—discharge experiment of V—V system in 2 M (mol dm−3) sulfuric acid solution has also been carried out on the carbon cloth (BW-309) electrode.

Performance Influence of Hydroxyl Radical on Graphite Felt Electrode Used in All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Abstract:Decomposition products from H2SO4 and H2O2,hydroxyl radical,was used for the surface treatment of the graphite felt electrode.Cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance measurements showed that the treated graphite felt cathode and anode peak current increased by 160.96% and 120.24% respectively,the polarization reaction resistance from 74.95Ω·cm2,was significantly reduced to 18.92Ω·cm2.The infrared spectra indicated that the treated surface contains a large number of oxygen-containing hydrophilic groups,and the Raman spectroscopy results show that the graphitization degree lower.This is further evidence of the graphite felt electrode surface by varying degrees of oxidation.XPS tests show that the oxygen content has an increase of 0.58%,quantitative proof of the infrared and Raman spectra of the test results.The static single-cell test results show that the treatment of charge-discharge capacity increased by 37.04% and 22.22% respectively.These analyzes confirmed that this method can significantly improve the vanadium redox flow battery performance.
