Abstract:It is a great challenge for conventional NaA zeolite membrane to maintain stable water flux in pervaporation (PV) dehydration of polar aprotic solvents because the aggressive adsorption of these solvents on membrane surface restrain water adsorption and thereby reduce water flux gradually. To address this issue, a facile surface modification method was adopted to decorate the surface of NaA zeolite membrane with sol-gel derived TiO2 nanoparticles for PV dehydration of N, N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Effect of TiO2 precursor composition on properties and separation performance of TiO2/NaA zeolite composite membranes was investigated extensively in terms of SEM, XRD, XPS, solvent adsorption and water contact angle. The results showed that the porous TiO2 layer on top of zeolite membrane not only hindered the electrostatic interaction between DMAc molecules and sodium cations from zeolite membrane but also allowed water permeation without large loss in flux. The minimum loss in water flux of TiO2/NaA zeolite membrane was about 17% after continuous PV dehydration of 10 wt% water/DMAc mixture for 24 h at 363 K while that of bare NaA zeolite membrane was over 95% within 15 h, indicating the effective improvement on separation stability of NaA zeolite membrane for PV dehydration of DMAc.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the separation stability of NaA zeolite membranes in the pervaporation dehydration process of N,N - dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Specifically, when traditional NaA zeolite membranes are used to process polar aprotic solvents (such as DMAc), due to the strong adsorption of these solvents on the membrane surface, the water flux will gradually decrease, resulting in a decline in separation performance. To overcome this challenge, the author adopted a simple surface modification method, coating TiO2 nanoparticles prepared by the sol - gel method on the surface of NaA zeolite membranes to improve their separation stability in DMAc pervaporation dehydration. ### Main research contents: 1. **Material preparation**: - Prepared NaA zeolite membranes supported by hollow fibers. - Coated TiO2 nanoparticles with different precursor compositions on the surface of NaA zeolite membranes by the sol - gel method to form TiO2/NaA composite membranes. 2. **Characterization and testing**: - The morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of the membranes were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X - ray diffraction (XRD), X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. - The properties such as the water contact angle and the saturated adsorption amounts of water and DMAc of the membranes were tested. 3. **Performance evaluation**: - The separation stability and flux changes of different membranes in the DMAc dehydration process were evaluated by pervaporation experiments. - The influence of different TiO2 precursor compositions on the membrane performance was studied. ### Key findings: - **The role of the TiO2 layer**: - The TiO2 layer not only hinders the electrostatic interaction between DMAc molecules and sodium ions on the zeolite membrane surface, reducing the adsorption of DMAc on the membrane surface, but also allows water to permeate without a significant loss of flux. - The experimental results show that after 24 - hour continuous pervaporation dehydration, the water flux loss of the TiO2/NaA composite membrane is only 17%, while the water flux loss of the unmodified NaA zeolite membrane exceeds 95% within 15 hours. - **The influence of temperature and feed water content**: - An increase in temperature can increase the diffusion rate of water, but it will also reduce the separation selectivity. - A decrease in the water content in the feed will lead to a decline in the total flux, but the TiO2 - modified membrane can still maintain a good water flux and separation selectivity at a high DMAc content. ### Conclusion: By coating TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of NaA zeolite membranes, the separation stability of the membranes in the DMAc pervaporation dehydration process is significantly improved, effectively solving the problem of flux decline of traditional NaA zeolite membranes when processing polar aprotic solvents. This method provides new ideas and technical support for solvent recovery in industrial applications.
