Abstract:We construct an $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetric sigma model on the cotangent bundle over the Hermitian symmetric space $E_7/(E_6\times U(1))$ in the projective superspace formalism, which is a manifest $\mathcal{N}=2$ off-shell superfield formulation in four-dimensional spacetime. To obtain this model we elaborate on results developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0811.0218" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0811.0218">arXiv:0811.0218</a> and present a new closed formula for the cotangent bundle action, which is valid for all Hermitian symmetric spaces. We show that the structure of cotangent bundle action is intimately related to the analytic structure of the Kähler potential with respect to a uniform rescaling of coordinates.

Abstract:N = 2 supersymmetry in four space-time dimensions is intimately related to hyperkahler and quaternionic Kahler geometries. On one hand, the target spaces for rigid supersymmetric sigma-models are necessarily hyperkahler manifolds. On the other hand, when coupled to N = 2 supergravity, the sigma-model target spaces must be quaternionic Kahler. It is known that such manifolds of restricted holonomy are difficult to generate explicitly. Projective superspace is a field-theoretic approach to constructing general N = 2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models, and hence to generate new hyperkahler and quaternionic Kahler metrics. Intended for a mixed audience consisting of both physicists and mathematicians, these lectures provide a pedagogical introduction to the projective-superspace approach.

Abstract:Projective superspace provides a natural framework for the construction of actions coupling hypermultiplets to conformal supergravity. We review how the off-shell actions are formulated in superspace and then discuss how to eliminate the infinite number of auxiliary fields to produce an on-shell N=2 supersymmetric sigma model, with the target space corresponding to a generic 4n-dimensional hyperkahler cone. We show how the component action coupling the hypermultiplets to conformal supergravity may be constructed starting from curved superspace. The superspace origin of the geometric data -- the hyperkahler potential, complex structures, and any gauged isometries -- is also addressed.

Abstract:We take a fresh look at the relation between generalised Kähler geometry and N = (2, 2) supersymmetric sigma models in two dimensions formulated in terms of (2, 2) superfields. Dual formulations in terms of different kinds of superfield are combined to give a formulation with a doubled target space and both the original superfield and the dual superfield. For Kähler geometry, we show that this doubled geometry is Donaldson's deformation of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the original Kähler manifold. This doubled formulation gives an elegant geometric reformulation of the equations of motion. We interpret the equations of motion as the intersection of two Lagrangian submanifolds (or of a Lagrangian submanifold with an isotropic one) in the infinite dimensional symplectic supermanifold which is the analogue of phase space. We then consider further extensions of this formalism, including one in which the geometry is quadrupled, and discuss their geometry.

Abstract:Recent one-loop calculations of certain supergravity-mediated quantum corrections in supersymmetric brane-world models employ either the component formulation (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0305184" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0305184">hep-th/0305184</a>) or the superfield formalism with only half of the bulk supersymmetry manifestly realized (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0305169" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0305169">hep-th/0305169</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0411216" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0411216">hep-th/0411216</a>). There are reasons to expect, however, that 5D supergraphs provide a more efficient setup to deal with these and more involved (in particular, higher-loop) calculations. As a first step toward elaborating such supergraph techniques, we develop in this letter a manifestly supersymmetric formulation for 5D globally supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges. Simple rules are given to reduce 5D superspace actions to a hybrid form which keeps manifest only the 4D, N=1 Poincare supersymmetry. (Previously, such hybrid actions were carefully worked out by rewriting the component actions in terms of simple superfields). To demonstrate the power of this formalism for model building applications, two families of off-shell supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in five dimensions are presented (including those with cotangent bundles of Kahler manifolds as target spaces). We elaborate, trying to make our presentation maximally clear and self-contained, on the techniques of 5D harmonic and projective superspaces used at some stages in this letter.

New techniques for Gauge Theories in Projective Superspace

Abstract:We introduce new techniques for calculations in Gauge theories with extended supersymmetry. We are working in Projective Superspace where the $SU(2)$ R-symmetry is realized geometrically by including an auxilliary $\mathbb{CP}^1$ component in the superspace. Different gauge representations are associated with different dependence on the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ coordinate $\zeta$ and using contour integrals on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ we define natural projection operators on these different representations which leads to elegant formulas for all relevant objects. The new techniques lead to compact expressions for lagrangians and field strengths in terms of the gauge prepotential but also to effective ways of reducing superspace expressions to components, i.e. to write them in terms of fields transforming covariantly only under a subgroup of the supersymmetry group. We illustrate our findings in several examples in three and four dimensions.

Abstract:This thesis is dedicated to the study of (super)spin projection operators and their applications on maximally symmetric (super)space backgrounds in three and four dimensions. On such backgrounds, the irreducible representations of the associated isometry (super)algebra may be realised on the space of tensor (super)fields satisfying certain differential constraints. The (super)spin projectors isolate the component of an unconstrained (super)field which furnishes the irreducible representation with maximal (super)spin. The explicit form of these (super)projectors are found in the following backgrounds: three-dimensional ($3d$) $\mathcal{N}$-extended Minkowski superspace $\mathbb{M}^{3|2 \mathcal{N}}$; $3d$ (anti-)de Sitter space (A)dS$_3$; $3d$ $\mathcal{N} = 1$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{3|2}$; four-dimensional ($4d$) $\mathcal{N} = 1$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{4|4}$; and $4d$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{4|8}$. An array of novel applications are investigated, with an emphasis placed on the interplay between (super)projectors and (super)conformal higher-spin theory. Another major component of this thesis consists of a detailed study of massless higher-spin gauge models with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ AdS supersymmetry in three dimensions. We find that every known higher-spin theory with $(1, 1)$ AdS supersymmetry decomposes into a sum of two off-shell $(1, 0)$ supermultiplets which belong to three series of inequivalent higher-spin gauge models.

Abstract:We give a physical derivation of generalized Kahler geometry. Starting from a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model, we rederive and explain the results of Gualtieri regarding the equivalence between generalized Kahler geometry and the bi-hermitean geometry of Gates-Hull-Rocek. When cast in the language of supersymmetric sigma models, this relation maps precisely to that between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. We also discuss topological twist in this context.

Abstract:A brief review of the harmonic superspace approach to the construction of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric higher spin theories is given. We define off-shell analytic harmonic gauge potentials of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric higher-spin multiplets and of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal higher-spin multiplets for an arbitrary integer highest spin. The component contents of these $\mathcal{N}=2$ higher-spin supermultiplets are explicitly presented. We also construct their cubic couplings to the hypermultiplet. This short report summarizes the basic results of the series of published papers [1-3] as well as announces those of the forthcoming article [4].

Abstract:We revisit the classical aspects of $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric sigma models with Hermitian symmetric target spaces, using the so-called Gross-Neveu (first-order GLSM) formalism. We reformulate these models for complex Grassmannians in terms of simple supersymmetric Lagrangians with polynomial interactions. For maximal isotropic Grassmannians we propose two types of equivalent Lagrangians, which make either supersymmetry or the geometry of target space manifest. These reformulations can be seen as current-current deformations of curved $\beta \gamma$ systems. The $\mathsf{CP}^{1}$ supersymmetric sigma model is our prototypical example.

Six-dimensional supermultiplets from bundles on projective spaces

Abstract:The projective variety of square-zero elements in the six-dimensional minimal supersymmetry algebra is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We use this fact, together with the pure spinor superfield formalism, to study supermultiplets in six dimensions, starting from vector bundles on projective spaces. We classify all multiplets whose derived invariants for the supertranslation algebra form a line bundle over the nilpotence variety; one can think of such multiplets as being those whose holomorphic twists have rank one over Dolbeault forms on spacetime. In addition, we explicitly construct multiplets associated to natural higher-rank equivariant vector bundles, including the tangent and normal bundles as well as their duals. Among the multiplets constructed are the vector multiplet and hypermultiplet, the family of $\mathcal{O}(n)$-multiplets, and the supergravity and gravitino multiplets. Along the way, we tackle various theoretical problems within the pure spinor superfield formalism. In particular, we give some general discussion about the relation of the projective nilpotence variety to multiplets and prove general results on short exact sequences and dualities of sheaves in the context of the pure spinor superfield formalism.

Spinorial Superspaces and Super Yang-Mills Theories

Abstract:In physics literature about supersymmetry, many authors refer to \emph{super Minkowski spaces}. These spaces are affine supermanifolds with certain distinguished spin structures. In these notes, we make the notion of such spin structures precise and generalise the setup to curved supermanifolds. This leads to the more general notion of \emph{spinorial superspaces}. By working in a suitable geometric and coordinate-free setting, many explicit coordinate computations appearing in physics literature can be replaced by more conceptual methods. As an application of the rather general framework of spinorial superspaces, we formulate $\mathcal N = 1$ super Yang-Mills theories on curved superspaces of spacetime dimensions $d=3$ and $d=4$ and show how to reduce the theory to field theories defined on an underlying ordinary spacetime manifold.

Abstract:Some selected applications of KT and HKT geometries in string theory, supergravity, black hole moduli spaces and hermitian geometry are reviewed. It is shown that the moduli spaces of a large class of five-dimensional supersymmetric black holes are HKT spaces. In hermitian geometry, it is shown that a compact, conformally balanced, strong KT manifold whose associated KT connection has holonomy contained in SU(n) is Calabi-Yau. The implication of this result in the context of some string compactifications is explained.
The Dark Side of Double-Tensor Multiplets

Abstract:We explore the properties of a set of free double-tensor multiplets in $N=2$ supersymmetry, focusing on their behavior within rigid superspace. These multiplets can be obtained from hypermultiplets by Hodge-dualizing half of their scalars, and feature an off-shell matching of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. Despite this fact, the supersymmetry algebra results to close only on-shell. Our analysis is conducted both in superspace, using the geometric (rheonomic) approach, and in spacetime, comparing how our results are obtained in the two approaches. Notably, the cohomology of superspace requires that the scalars Hodge-dual to the antisymmetric tensors crucially contribute to the superspace description of the tensors super-field strengths. This shows an inherent non-locality of the theory, already in the free case, which however does not forbid a Lagrangian description.

Abstract:The nilpotence variety for extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a cone over a quadric in projective space. The pure spinor correspondence, which relates the description of off-shell supermultiplets to the classification of modules over the corresponding hypersurface ring, reduces to a classical problem of linear algebra. Spinor bundles, which correspond to maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, serve as basic building blocks. Koszul duality appears as a deformed version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence that we make fully concrete. We illustrate in numerous examples the close relationship between these connections and the powerful graphical technology of Adinkras, which appear as a decategorification of special complexes on quadrics. We emphasize the role of R-symmetry for recovering higher-dimensional gauge and gravity multiplets.

Abstract:In the $N=1$ superspace, AdS$_4$ supersymmetry is realized as the non-linear super coordinate transformations. The fermionic coordinates form a faithful non-linear representation of supersymmetry on their own. By introducing an auxiliary scalar coordinate, this representation is reformulated as a 5-dimensional linear representation, i.e., the superspinor representation. New linear representations are constructed by tensor products of multiple superspinors. Especially, the superspace bosonic coordinates are embedded in the supervector representation, which is the traceless symmetric part of the bi-superspinor representation. Based on these linear representations, the $N=1$ AdS$_4$ supergravity action can be reproduced in a manifestly supersymmetry-covariant way.

Abstract:We consider the generalized Kahler structures (g,J_+,J_-) that arise on a hyperkahler manifold (M,g,I,J,K) when we choose J_+ and J_- from the twistor space of M. We find a relation between semichiral and arctic superfields which can be used to determine the generalized Kahler potential for hyperkahler manifolds whose description in projective superspace is fully understood. We use this relation to determine an S^2-family of generalized Kahler potentials for Euclidean space and for the Eguchi-Hanson geometry. Cotangent bundles of Hermitian symmetric spaces constitute a class of hyperkahler manifolds where our method can be applied immediately since the necessary results from projective superspace are already available. As a non-trivial higher-dimensional example, we determine the generalized potential for T*CP^n, which generalizes the Eguchi-Hanson result.

Abstract:Using polarization spinor methods in conjunction with the superspace formalism, we construct 3-point superconformal invariants that are used to determine the form of 3-point correlators of spinning superfield operators in $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 4-dimensions. We enumerate the structural form of various spinning 3-point correlators using these invariants and find additional constraints on their form when the operators are conserved supercurrents. For these purposes, we first construct the invariants and 3-point correlators in non-supersymmetric $4d$ CFTs which are then extended using superspace methods to $4d$ SCFTs.
