Abstract:We revisit the classical aspects of $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric sigma models with Hermitian symmetric target spaces, using the so-called Gross-Neveu (first-order GLSM) formalism. We reformulate these models for complex Grassmannians in terms of simple supersymmetric Lagrangians with polynomial interactions. For maximal isotropic Grassmannians we propose two types of equivalent Lagrangians, which make either supersymmetry or the geometry of target space manifest. These reformulations can be seen as current-current deformations of curved $\beta \gamma$ systems. The $\mathsf{CP}^{1}$ supersymmetric sigma model is our prototypical example.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore how to construct an N = (2, 2) supersymmetric sigma model with a symmetric Grassmann manifold target space in the Gross - Neveu form. Specifically, the authors re - examined the classical N = (2, 2) supersymmetric sigma models whose target spaces are symmetric Hermitian manifolds and reformulated these models using the so - called Gross - Neveu (“first - order GLSM”) form. For complex Grassmann manifolds, they proposed a simple supersymmetric Lagrangian with polynomial interactions. For the maximal homology Grassmann manifolds, they proposed two equivalent Lagrangians, one making the supersymmetry obvious and the other making the geometric properties of the target space obvious. These reformulations can be regarded as current - current deformations of the curvature βγ system.
The specific problems discussed in the paper include:
- **Complex Grassmann manifolds**: The supersymmetric Gross - Neveu form of the unit complex Grassmann manifold Gr(m, n) was constructed, and the relevant supersymmetric transformations and constraint conditions were derived in detail.
- **Extreme Grassmann manifolds**: The supersymmetrization of the orthogonal Grassmann manifold OGr(m, n) and the symplectic Grassmann manifold SGr(m, 2n) was discussed. In particular, for the minimal and maximal orthogonal Grassmann manifolds OGr(1, n) and OGr(m, 2m), as well as the maximal symplectic Grassmann manifold SGr(m, 2m), the authors showed how to overcome the supersymmetry obstacles.
- **Asymmetric Grassmann manifolds**: The obstacles to constructing supersymmetric models on asymmetric Grassmann manifolds were discussed, and these obstacles are mainly related to the fact that the target space metric is not Kähler.
- **Gauge fixing**: It was introduced how to choose convenient gauge conditions in order to obtain geometric forms of models from the integration of auxiliary fields.
Through these studies, the authors aim to provide a systematic method for constructing and understanding supersymmetric sigma models with complex target spaces, especially in the Gross - Neveu form. This not only contributes to theoretical physics research but also provides a theoretical basis for applications in related fields.
