Abstract:We prove an explicit degree formula for certain unitary Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Combining with an alternative degree formula in terms of Schubert calculus, we deduce several algebraic combinatorial identities which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Affine Lusztig varieties encode the orbital integrals of Iwahori--Hecke functions and serve as building blocks for the (conjectural) theory of affine character sheaves. We establish a close relationship between affine Lusztig varieties and affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties. Consequently, we give an explicit nonemptiness pattern and dimension formula for affine Lusztig varieties in most cases.

Abstract:We introduce a new language to describe the geometry of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in affine flag varieties. This second part of a two paper series uses this new language, i.e. the double Bruhat graph, to describe certain structure constants of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. As an application, we describe nonemptiness and dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for most elements of the affine Weyl group and arbitrary $\sigma$-conjugacy classes.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a formula for the degree of the 3-secant variety of a nonsingular projective variety embedded by a 5-very ample line bundle. The formula is provided in terms of Segre classes of the tangent bundle of a given variety. We use the generalized version of double point formula to reduce the calculation into the case of the 2-secant variety. Due to the singularity of the 2-secant variety, we use secant bundle as a nonsingular birational model and compute multiplications of desired algebraic cycles.

Abstract:We give a description of the cohomology groups of the structure sheaf on smooth compactifications $\overline{X}(w)$ of Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X(w)$ for ${\rm GL}_n$, for all elements $w$ in the Weyl group. As a consequence, we obtain the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\overline{X}(w)$. Moreover, using our result for $\overline{X}(w)$ and a spectral sequence associated to a stratification of $\overline{X}(w)$, we deduce the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology with compact support of $X(w)$. In our proof of the main theorem, in addition to considering the Demazure--Hansen smooth compactifications of $X(w)$, we show that a similar class of constructions provide smooth compactifications of $X(w)$ in the case of ${\rm GL}_n$. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the Zariski closure of $X(w)$, for any connected reductive group $G$ and any $w$, has pseudo-rational singularities.

Abstract:In this paper, we deduce explicit multiplicity formulas of the Fourier-Jacobi model for Deligne-Lusztig characters of finite symplectic groups, unitary groups, and general linear groups. We then apply these results to deduce the explicit depth zero local descent (à la Soudry and Tanay) for $p$-adic unitary groups. The result is a concrete example in the context of non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad program.

Abstract:In this paper we study higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations of reductive groups over discrete valuation rings, with finite residue field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In previous work we proved that, at even levels, these geometrically constructed representations are isomorphic to certain algebraically constructed representations (referred to as the algebraisation theorem at even levels). In this paper we work with an arbitrary level $>1$. Our main result is (1) the algebraisation theorem at all levels $>1$ (with the sign being explicitly determined for $q\geq7$). As consequences, we obtain (2) the regular semisimplicity of orbits of generic higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and the dimension formula; in the course of the proof, we give (3) an induction formula of higher level Deligne--Lusztig representations, and a new proof of the character formula at regular semisimple elements.

Abstract:Feng-Yun-Zhang have proved a function field analogue of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula, relating special cycles on moduli spaces of unitary shtukas to higher derivatives of Eisenstein series. We prove an extension of this formula in a low-dimensional case, and deduce from it a Gross-Zagier style formula expressing intersection multiplicities of cycles in terms of higher derivatives of base-change $L$-functions.

Abstract:A modular category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to a differential graded modular functor, i.e. a system of projective mapping class group representations on chain complexes. This differential graded modular functor assigns to the torus the Hochschild complex and, in the dual description, the Hochschild cochain complex of $\mathcal{C}$. On both complexes, the monoidal product of $\mathcal{C}$ induces the structure of an $E_2$-algebra, to which we refer as the differential graded Verlinde algebra. At the same time, the modified trace induces on the tensor ideal of projective objects in $\mathcal{C}$ a Calabi-Yau structure so that the cyclic Deligne Conjecture endows the Hochschild cochain and chain complex of $\mathcal{C}$ with a second $E_2$-structure. Our main result is that the action of a specific element $S$ in the mapping class group of the torus transforms the differential graded Verlinde algebra into this second $E_2$-structure afforded by the Deligne Conjecture. This result is established for both the Hochschild chain and the Hochschild cochain complex of $\mathcal{C}$. In general, these two versions of the result are inequivalent. In the case of Hochschild chains, we obtain a block diagonalization of the Verlinde algebra through the action of the mapping class group element $S$. In the semisimple case, both results reduce to the Verlinde formula. In the non-semisimple case, we recover after restriction to zeroth (co)homology earlier proposals for non-semisimple generalizations of the Verlinde formula.

Abstract:Let $\tilde{W}$ be an extended affine Weyl group, $\mathbf{H}$ be the corresponding affine Hecke algebra over the ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{q}^\frac{1}{2}, \mathbf{q}^{-\frac{1}{2}}]$, and $J$ be Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra, viewed as a based ring with basis $\{t_w\}$. Viewing $J$ as a subalgebra of the $(\mathbf{q}^{-\frac{1}{2}})$-adic completion of $\mathbf{H}$ via Lusztig's map $\phi$, we use Harish-Chandra's Plancherel formula for $p$-adic groups to show that the coefficient of $T_x$ in $t_w$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{q}$, with denominator depending only on the two-sided cell containing $w$, and dividing a power of the Poincaré polynomial of the finite Weyl group. As an application, we conjecture that these denominators encode more detailed information about the failure of the Kazhdan-Lusztig classification at roots of the Poincaré polynomial than is currently known. Along the way, we show that upon specializing $\mathbf{q}=q>1$, the map from $J$ to the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra is injective. As an application of injectivity, we give a novel criterion for an Iwahori-spherical representation to have fixed vectors under a larger parahoric subgroup in terms of its Kazhdan-Lusztig parameter.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field with Weyl group $W$. The analogy between Lusztig varieties and Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to minimal length elements in elliptic conjugacy classes of $W$ was studied by He and Lusztig. In this paper, we study the parabolic version of above varieties associated to some good braid elements for any conjugacy class of $W$. This also leads to an alternative version of Lusztig's map in general case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the affine Deligne--Lusztig variety $X(\mu,b)_K$ and classify all quadruples $(\mathbf{G}, \mu, b, K)$ with $\dim X(\mu, b)_K=0$. This question was first asked by Rapoport in 2005, who also made an explicit conjecture in the hyperspecial level. We prove that $\dim X(\mu,b)_K=0$ if and only if, up to certain Hodge-Newton decomposition condition, the pair $(\mathbf{G}, \{\mu\})$ is of extended Lubin-Tate type. We also give a combinatorial description of this condition by the essential gap function on $B(\mathbf{G})$ and the $\mu$-ordinary condition for the generic Newton stratum.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:For connected reductive groups together with a Frobenius root $F$ that preserves the set of simple reflections, we show that for every tuple $(w_1,\ldots, w_r)$ of Weyl group elements there exists a minimal length element in an $F$-conjugacy class in $W$ such that the cohomology of the structure sheaf and the canonical sheaf for the associated compactified Deligne--Lusztig varieties are isomorphic respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we give a proof of Deligne's conjecture on the critical values of $L$-functions for arbitrary algebraic Hecke characters. This extends a result of Blasius, which only works in the case of CM fields. The key new insight is that the Eisenstein-Kronecker classes of Kings-Sprang, which allow for a cohomological interpretation of the value $L(\chi,0)$ for Hecke characters $\chi$ of arbitrary totally imaginary fields, can be regarded as de Rham classes of Blasius' reflex motive.
