Abstract:This paper uses the background field method to calculate one-loop divergent corrections to the gauge field propa- gators in noncommutative U（1） gauge theory with scalar fields. It shows that for a massless scalar field, the gauge field propagators are renormalizable to θ 2 -order, but for a massive scalar field they are renormalizable only to θ-order.

Abstract:Bosonization in a theory with four-fermion interaction of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type with additional U(N) symmetry is studied. It is demonstrated that bosonization is not uniquely determined by the interaction terms due to Fierz identities. Effective action including both fermions and composite fields is constructed. R-operation renormalization scheme is developed for the effective action. A generalization of bosonization transformation called composite fields formalism is proposed and demonstrated to be applicable to any field theory. Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with three-fermion composite fields is studied as an example. Fierz identities for sixth-order combinations of fermions are derived.

Abstract:We extend the previous work and study the renormalisability of the SU$_L$(2) $\times$ U$_Y$(1) electroweak theory with massive W Z fields and massive matter fields. We expound that with the constraint conditions caused by the W Z mass term and the additional condition chosen by us we can still performed the quantization in the same way as before. We also show that when the $\delta-$ functions appearing in the path integral of the Green functions and representing the constraint conditions are rewritten as Fourier integrals with Lagrange multipliers $\lambda_a$ and $\lambda_y$, the total effective action consisting of the Lagrange multipliers, ghost fields and the original fields is BRST invariant. Furthermore, with the help of the the renormalisability of the theory without the the mass term of matter fields, we find the general form of the divergent part of the generating functional for the regular vertex functions and prove the renormalisability of the theory with the mass terms of the W Z fields and the matter fields.

Abstract:One of the useful and practical methods for solving quantum-mechanical many-body systems is to recast the full problem into a form of the effective interaction acting within a model space of tractable size. Many of the effective-interaction theories in nuclear physics have been formulated by use of the so called $\hatQ$ box introduced by Kuo <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. It has been one of the central problems how to calculate the $\hatQ$ box accurately and efficiently. We first show that, introducing new basis states, the Hamiltonian is transformed to a block-tridiagonal form in terms of submatrices with small dimension. With this transformed Hamiltonian, we next prove that the $\hatQ$ box can be expressed in two ways: One is a form of continued fraction and the other is a simple series expansion up to second order with respect to renormalized vertices and propagators. This procedure ensures to derive an exact $\hatQ$ box, if the calculation converges as the dimension of the Hilbert space tends to infinity. The $\hatQ$ box given in this study corresponds to a non-perturbative solution for the energy-dependent effective interaction which is often referred to as the Bloch-Horowitz or the Feshbach form. By applying the $\hatZ$-box approach based on the $\hatQ$ box proposed previously, we introduce a graphical method for solving the eigenvalue problem of the Hamiltonian. The present approach has a possibility of resolving many of the difficulties encountered in the effective-interaction theory.

Partial Renormalization of Quasiparticle Interactions

Abstract:Nonlocal effective interactions are inherent to non-relativistic quantum many-body systems, but their systematic resummation poses a significant challenge known as the ``vertex problem" in many-body perturbation theory. We introduce a renormalization scheme based on a projection-based renormalization condition that selectively resums the most essential nonlocal contributions to the effective interaction vertex, avoiding the computational complexity of the full vertex function. This enables us to derive a renormalized Feynman diagrammatic series with large parameters canceled by counter-diagrams, efficiently generated using a perturbative expansion of the parquet equations and computed using a diagrammatic Monte Carlo algorithm. Applying our approach to a 3D Yukawa Fermi liquid, we demonstrate that the renormalized perturbation theory remains predictive even in the strongly correlated regime and uncover significant sign cancellations between different channels contributing to the scattering amplitude. Our work establishes a novel framework for investigating strong correlations in quantum many-body systems, offering a systematic approach to explore nonlocal theories for challenging systems like the electron liquid in material science.

Nonperturbative renormalization of the lattice Sommerfield vector model

Abstract:The lattice Sommerfield model, describing a massive vector gauge field coupled to a light fermion in two dimensions, is an ideal candidate to verify perturbative conclusions. In contrast with continuum exact solutions, we prove that there is no infinite field renormalization, implying the reduction of the degree of the ultraviolet divergence, and that the anomalies are nonrenormalized. Such features are the counterpart of analog properties at the basis of the Standard Model perturbative renormalizability. Renormalization of Massive Rank-1 Field Theory Nonminimally Coupled to Quantum Gravity

Abstract:We consider a self-interacting, massive rank-1 field coupled to quantum gravity. The theory is renormalizable by power counting and contains a massive spin-1 field and a massive scalar field. The latter has a propagator with negative residue and it is quantized as a purely virtual particle, namely it cannot appear as external on-shell state but contributes to renormalization. In this way the resulting theory is also unitary, both in flat spacetime and when it is coupled to renormalizable quantum gravity (where purely virtual particles are required as well). We compute the full set of one-loop beta functions, including those of the nonminimal couplings. We show that the gravitational couplings cannot be made asymptotically free in absence of tachyons, even with the addition of the two nonminimal terms. Various aspects of renormalizability are discussed by studying the beta functions. Finally, we compare our model with Proca theory, where renormalizability is spoiled if self interactions are present.

Towards the renormalisation of the Standard Model effective field theory to dimension eight: Bosonic interactions II

Abstract:We calculate the renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model (SM) effective operators at one loop and to order $v^4/\Lambda^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $\Lambda$ the unknown new physics threshold. We focus on contributions driven by one dimension-eight term and SM couplings, thus extending (and completing) the effort initiated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.05291" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.05291">arXiv:2106.05291</a>, in which quantum corrections from pairs of dimension-six interactions were considered. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the renormalisation of loop-induced interactions by tree-level generated terms and, more importantly, the validity of positivity bounds on different operators inducing anomalous gauge quartic couplings.

Abstract:$ $In this paper we present a systematic treatment for fundamental renormalization of quantum electrodynamics in real space. Although the standard renormalization is an old school problem in this case, it has not yet been completely done in position space. The most important difference with well-known differential renormalization is that we do the whole procedure in coordinate space without need to transformation to momentum space. Specially, we directly derive the conterterms in real space. This problem becomes important when the translational symmetry of the system breaks somehow explicitly (for example by nontrivial boundary condition (BC) on the fields). In this case, one is not able to move to momentum space by a simple Fourier transformation. Therefore, in the context of renormalized perturbation theory, by imposing the renormalization conditions, counterterms in coordinate space will depend directly on the fields BCs (or background topology). Trivial BC or trivial background lead to the usual standard conterterms. If the counterterms modify then the quantum corrections of any physical quantity are different from those in free space where we have the translational invariance. We also show that, up to order $\alpha$, our counterterms are reduced to usual standard terms derived in free space.

Renormalization of effective field theories via on-shell methods: the case of axion-like particles

Abstract:We consider the renormalization group equations of axion-like particle effective field theories and determine the corresponding anomalous dimensions at one loop via on-shell and unitarity-based methods. The calculation of the phase-space cut-integrals is carried out using different integration methods, among which the double-cut integration via Stokes' theorem proves to be technically simpler. A close comparison between the standard Feynman diagrammatic approach and the unitarity-based method enables us to explicitly verify the reduction of complexity in the latter case, along with a more direct and elegant way to establish a connection among anomalous dimensions of operators that are dual under the CP symmetry.

On the renormalization of non-polynomial field theories

Abstract:A class of scalar models with non-polynomial interaction, which naturally admits an analytical resummation of the series of tadpole diagrams is studied in perturbation theory. In particular, we focus on a model containing only one renormalizable coupling that appear as a multiplicative coefficient of the squared field. A renormalization group analysis of the Green functions of the model shows that these are only approximated solutions of the flow equations, with errors proportional to powers of the coupling, therefore smaller in the region of weak coupling. The final output of the perturbative analysis is that the renormalized model is non-interacting with finite mass and vanishing vertices or, in an effective theory limited by an ultraviolet cut-off, the vertices are suppressed by powers of the inverse cut-off. The relation with some non-polynomial interactions derived long ago, as solutions of the linearized functional renormalization group flow equations, is also discussed.

Abstract:We present the proof of renormalization of the Horava theory, in the nonprojectable version. We obtain a form of the quantum action that exhibits a manifest BRST-symmetry structure. Previous analysis has shown that the divergences produced by irregular loops cancel completely between them. The remaining divergences are local. The renormalization is achieved by using the approach developed by Barvinsky et al. with the background-field formalism.

Abstract:Perturbative renormalization provides the bedrock of understanding quantum field theories. In this work, I point out an alternative way of renormalizing quantum field theories, which is naturally encountered and well-known for the case of large N scalar field theories. In terms of bare parameters, this nonperturbative alternative renormalization differs qualitatively from its perturbative cousin: in the continuum limit, the bare coupling constant goes to zero instead of infinity, and there is no wave-function counterterm. Despite these differences, the resulting n -point functions of the theory are finite. Revisit of renormalization of Einstein-Maxwell theory at one-loop

Abstract:In a series of recent works based on foliation-based quantization in which renormalizability has been achieved for the physical sector of the theory, we have shown that the use of the standard graviton propagator interferes, due to the presence of the trace mode, with the 4D covariance. A subtlety in the background field method also requires careful handling. This status of the matter motivated us to revisit an Einstein-scalar system in one of the sequels. Continuing the endeavors, we revisit the one-loop renormalization of an Einstein-Maxwell system in the present work. The systematic renormalization of the cosmological and Newton's constants is carried out by applying the refined background field method. One-loop beta function of the vector coupling constant is explicitly computed and compared with the literature. The longstanding problem of gauge choice-dependence of the effective action is addressed and the manner in which the gauge-choice independence is restored in the present framework is discussed. The formalism also sheds light on background independent analysis. The renormalization involves a metric field redefinition originally introduced by `t Hooft; with the field redefinition the theory should be predictive.

Backfiring Bosonisation

Abstract:For a fermionic quantum field theory in $d=1+1$ dimensions, there is a subtle difference between summing over spin structures and gauging $(-1)^F$. If the gravitational anomaly vanishes mod 16, then both operations are equivalent and yield a bosonic theory. But if the gravitational anomaly only vanishes mod 8, then only gauging $(-1)^F$ is allowed, and the result is a fermionic theory. Our goal is to understand in detail how this happens, despite the fact $(-1)^F$ is defined in terms of shifting the spin structure, which would naïvely suggest that both operations are equivalent. We do this from three perspectives: an abstract view in terms of anomalies, explicit CFT calculations, and a Symmetry TFT perspective. To conclude, we illustrate our results using the heterotic string and the famous self-triality of 8 Majorana-Weyl fermions.

High-energy behavior of scattering amplitudes in theories with purely virtual particles

Abstract:We study a class of renormalizable quantum field theories with purely virtual particles that exhibits nonrenormalizable behavior in the high-energy limit of scattering cross sections, which grow as powers of the center-of-mass energy squared and seems to violate unitarity bounds. We point out that the problem should be viewed as a violation of perturbativity, instead of unitarity, and show that the resummation of self energies fixes the issue. As an explicit example, we consider a class of $O(N)$ theories at the leading order in the large-$N$ expansion and show that the different quantization prescription of purely virtual particles takes care of the nonrenormalizable behavior, making the resummed cross sections to decrease at high energies and the amplitudes to satisfy the unitarity bounds. We compare the results to the case of theories with ghosts, where the resummation cannot change the behavior of cross sections due to certain cancellations in the high-energy expansion of the self energies. These results are particularly relevant for quantum gravity.
