Abstract:Understanding ionic conduction in layered double hydroxides (LDHs) is a crucial step towards utilizing them as solid, hydroxide ion‐conducting electrolytes. Mg−Al LDHs were modified with TRIS ligands to determine the relative contributions of outer surface and interlayer hydroxide ions to the overall ionic conductivity. Understanding ionic conduction in layered double hydroxides (LDHs) is a crucial step towards utilizing them as solid, hydroxide ion‐conducting electrolytes in energy conversion applications. We selectively modified the interlayer and external surfaces of MgAl LDHs with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) ligands. By adjusting the concentration of the TRIS surface modifier, the LDH basal plane surfaces could be functionalized everywhere (internally and externally) or only externally. External modification resulted in loss of OH‐conductivity compared to pristine LDHs, confirming that external platelet surfaces are the primary ion conduction pathway.
