Abstract:In the industrial circumstances, sulfur-containing species are frequently present simultaneously in the exhaust gas containing methane, ethane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These species may occupy the active sites on the catalyst surface during the oxidation reaction, causing temporary physical deactivation of the catalyst. Moreover, permanent deactivation might occur when sulfur-containing species react with the active sites, which thereby causes the poisoning and invalidation of the catalysts. This paper reviewed the anti-toxicity properties of precious metals, composite metal oxides and perovskite-type catalysts adopted in the catalytic combustion of exhaust gas. The detailed poisoning mechanism of the catalysts was discussed, and the way to improve the anti-toxicity of the catalyst was proposed accordingly. This review may provide some insight into the development of catalysts with high resistance to sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:When reduced to the atomic level, catalysts exhibit greatly improved performance, i.e., improved atomic utilization, heightened coordination unsaturation, and increased specific surface area. Meticulous design concerning atomic distribution and electron behavior is vital for improving catalytic efficiency, introducing the concept of “ultimate structure” in catalysis. These structures span a broad range from single atoms (SAs) to dual atoms, single-atom chains/layers, and subnano-clusters (SNCs). By examining catalysts at the atomic and electronic levels using these ultimate structures, we can gain a deep understanding of their inherent properties and new directions for future catalytic design. This review delves into the recent progress and research directions of ultimate structures in catalysis, focusing on SAs, SNCs, and electron-level dynamics. In particular, we focus on advanced strategies such as metal-support bond enhancement, defect manipulation, and electron configuration control to optimize these ultimate structures. We also explore the interrelationships between various ultimate structures, underlining their unique attributes. This review outlines potential trajectories for the evolution of these catalysts with ultimate structures.

Abstract:Transformational catalytic performance in rate and selectivity is obtainable through catalysts that change on the time scale of catalytic turnover frequency. In this work, dynamic catalysts are defined in the context and history of forced and passive dynamic chemical systems, with the classification of unique catalyst behaviors based on temporally relevant linear scaling parameters. The conditions leading to the catalytic rate and selectivity enhancement are described as modifying the local electronic or steric environment of the active site to independently accelerate sequential elementary steps of an overall catalytic cycle. These concepts are related to physical systems and devices that stimulate a catalyst using light, vibrations, strain, and electronic manipulations including electrocatalysis, back-gating of catalyst surfaces, and introduction of surface electric fields via solid electrolytes and ferroelectrics. Abstract:The volume of research literature on catalysis and surface science has increased enormously during the last decade, and it has become impossible for any one investigator to follow all the new developments. This series on catalysis science and technology attempts to correct the problem to some extent by presenting review articles that are more than just a listing of the current literature. Volume 6 has four chapters. Chapter one is by J.B. Butt and is on the often neglected but very important area of catalyst deactivation and regeneration. The chapter starts with the fundamental chemistry side, focused on the mechanisms of poisoning and coking. Major emphasis is on the engineering side of deactivation and regeneration. Related areas of transport phenomena and reactor analysis are discussed in detail. At each step the reader is given enough information to understand the topic and prepared for the following discussion. Chapter 2 on Catalytic Olefin Polymerization reactions by I. Pasquon and U. Giannini. A short coming of this chapter is the lack of any discussion on the kinetics and modeling of polymerization reactions. Chapter 3 is on Metal Catalyzed Skeletal Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Metal Catalysts by G.L.C. Maire and F.G. Garin. This ismore » a very organized review and there are no discontinuities in subject matter. Chapter 4 is on Dispersed Metal Catalysts by K. Foger. This is an outstanding article giving the unfamiliar reader a good background on the subject matter. Advantages and disadvantages of the various preparation and characterization methods are presented to the reader in a clear and easy to understand style. Structure of supports as well as small metal crystallites are discussed in detail.« less

Abstract:Energy technologies affect virtually every aspect of life in modern societies—including transportation, utilities, agriculture, medicine, and the availability of a myriad of consumer products—and depend on human ability to accelerate and to guide chemical transformations. Controlling these transformations, which occur in the microscopic world of atoms and molecules, forms the basis of countless technologies such as production of fuels, fertilizers, plastics, pharmaceuticals and much more. At the very core of these chemical transformations are catalysts—specialized and often highly complex types of matter that allow chemical reactions to occur rapidly and produce specific products. Catalysts also have the remarkable ability to perform their tasks millions of times without themselves being consumed. The discovery of inexpensive and widely-deployable energy and chemical technologies, and their underpinning catalysis science, is critical to ensure the economic viability of US energy and chemical industries. Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Abstract:Impressive progress in computational asymmetric catalysis has been made in the past twenty years owing to advancements in algorithm and method development for predicting catalyst enantioselectivity. These methods/algorithms describe reactions that can be categorized into two groups: reactions where the mechanism (or transition state for the enantioselective step) is known and used to determine catalyst stereoselectivity by modelling the diastereomeric transition states and reactions where knowledge of the mechanism is not required and leveraging experimental data to establish correlations between reaction descriptors and enantioselectivity is imperative. Although these methods have reached a suitable level of proficiency for the prediction of enantioselectivity, this field remains largely unexplored/underused by experimental chemists. In this Review we aim to shed light on the models, methods and applications used in asymmetric synthesis, with accessible language suitable for experimental chemists. Our hope is that these methods will ultimately be adopted by synthetic chemists for the design of new catalysts.

Abstract:To tackle the grand twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change, Small Structures of the advanced catalysts can play a central role in not only promoting the energy conversion such as green hydrogen production and energy storage, but also mitigating green-house gas threats for value-added fuel conversion. Catalysis, one of the most active and diversified research fields, is pivotal to achieving the zero-emission target in the coming decades. The significant advancements have been witnessed in material design, experimental technology, and fundamental knowledge. To document the state-of-the-art of these advances, this Special Issue features 7 research articles and 8 reviews, covering a broad spectrum of the advanced catalysis for renewable energy conversion and storage: electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and thermal catalysis. Focusing on water splitting reactions for green hydrogen production, there are three review articles about the design of new catalysts including 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Q Zhang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200109) and Ni-based MOFs (D H Taffa et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200263), and advances in in situ characterization platforms (J-F Li et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200201). Four research articles introduce new photocatalytic hydrogen processes based on mesoporous semiconductors (R Marschall et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200184) and 2D carbon nitride catalysts (L Wang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200264), photoelectrochemical water oxidation using doped titania nanotubes (K Maeda et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200229), and porous carbon based electrocatalytic water splitting reactions (Y Yamauchi et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200235). B-Y Xia et al. present their perspectives on water splitting at a larger scale, discussing the challenges and strategies for proton-exchange-membrane-based water electrolyzers (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200130). To mitigate the carbon dioxide impact on our environment, H Jang and co-workers review single-atom catalyst design for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200236), and R Xu et al. present a research article on the 2D covalent organic framework catalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200233). J Scott's team focuses on the conversion of CO2 to valuable light olefins (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200285). Relating to the concept of catalytic process for value-added products, G Wu and co-workers present the electrochemical nitrate conversion to ammonia (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200202), whereas J Liang and co-workers provide a critical overview on the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reactions (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200266). In a research article, K Nakajima's team demonstrate their strategy to catalytic de-hydration of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200224). By using the concept of synergistic catalysis, B-Q Li, Q Zhang, and co-workers investigate high-performing catalysts for an energy storage system of lithium-sulfur batteries (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200205). The guest editors do wish this special issue can shed light on the catalytic reaction mechanism and understanding of rational catalyst design in this fast-growing research field. We believe that the sustained research effort in rational Small Structure innovation would make big impact on sustainable energy supply and climate change.

Abstract:The discovery and development of catalysts and catalytic processes are essential components to maintaining an ecological balance in the future. Recent revolutions made in data science could have a great impact on traditional catalysis research in both industry and academia and could accelerate the development of catalysts. Machine learning (ML), a subfield of data science, can play a central role in this paradigm shift away from the use of traditional approaches. In this review, we present a user's guide for ML that we believe will be helpful for scientists performing research in the field of catalysis and summarize recent progress that has been made in utilizing ML to create homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The focus of the review is on the design, synthesis, and characterization of catalytic materials/compounds as well as their applications to catalyzed processes. The ML technique not only enhances ways to discover catalysts but also serves as a powerful tool to establish a deeper understanding of relationships between the properties of materials/compounds and their catalytic activities, selectivities, and stabilities. This knowledge facilitates the establishment of principles employed to design catalysts and to enhance their efficiencies. Despite such advantages of ML, it is noteworthly that the current ML-assisted development of real catalysts remains in its infancy, mainly because of the complexity of catalysis associated with the fact that catalysis is a time-dependent dynamic event. In this review, we discuss how seamless integration of experiment, theory, and data science can be used to accelerate catalyst development and to guide future studies aimed at applications that will impact society's need to produce energy, materials, and chemicals. Moreover, the limitations and difficulties of ML in catalysis research originating from the complex nature of catalysis are discussed in order to make the catalysis community aware of challenges that need to be addressed for effective and practical use of ML in the field.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have been a research hotspot in the field of nanocatalysis due to their unique advantages in recent years. The isolated single or few atoms can be anchored on supports via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency, reducing the use of metal resources while displaying distinguished catalytic performance. This perspective presents the latest advances in single-atom site catalysts (SACs) and multi-atom site catalysts (MACs), highlights their superiority, and discusses the current limitations as well as the outlooks facing their future development.

Abstract:<p>A heterogeneous catalyst is a backbone of modern sustainable green industries; and understanding the relationship between its structure and properties is the key for its advancement. Recently, many upscaling synthesis strategies for the development of a variety of respectable control atomically precise heterogeneous catalysts are reported and explored for various important applications in catalysis for energy and environmental remediation. Precise atomic‐scale control of catalysts has allowed to significantly increase activity, selectivity, and in some cases stability. This approach has proved to be relevant in various energy and environmental related technologies such as fuel cell, chemical reactors for organic synthesis, and environmental remediation. Therefore, this review aims to critically analyze the recent progress on single‐atom catalysts (SACs) application in oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and chemical and/or electrochemical organic transformations. Finally, opportunities that may open up in the future are summarized, along with suggesting new applications for possible exploitation of SACs.</p>

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) offers potential for designing structured catalytic materials, enhancing industrial processes. AM can improve catalysts by reducing activation energy and enhancing selectivity. Traditional methods limit material choice and coating uniformity. AM enables diverse compositions and complex structures, enhancing reagent‐catalyst interactions, and cost‐effectiveness. This review outlines AM's progress in developing monolithic catalysts, discussing advantages, disadvantages, and opportunities to overcome synthesis limitations. Additive manufacturing (AM) presents a promising opportunity for the innovative design and production of structured catalytic materials. Given the critical role of catalysts in industrial catalytic processes, AM has the potential to contribute to the development of improved catalysts by reducing activation energy and enhancing selectivity. Conventional synthesis methods limit the choice of structural materials and composition for producing monoliths. Additionally, the deposition of catalytic compounds is also restricted by commonly applied techniques that may require prior coverage or treatments to improve adherence or do not achieve a homogenous coat. Moreover, production is limited to monoliths with straight and parallel channels. However, this format drives to laminar regime flow thus restricting the radial mass and heat transfer. Conversely, AM allows the production of a wider variety of compositions and more complex structures that have proven to rise their effectiveness by increasing reagents‐catalyst interaction, making catalytic processes more cost‐effective. Therefore, in this review an outline of the recent progress of AM methods in the development of monolithic catalysts is presented focusing on the requirements, advantages, and disadvantages of each technique, hence providing a practical overview of their novel opportunities to overcome current limitations in catalyst synthesis.
