Abstract:This study proposed one-pot hydrothermal carbonization as an eco-friendly and facile approach to engineer aluminum (Al)-hydrochar catalyst for effective glucose isomerization to fructose. Different hydrothermal temperatures for in-situ loading Al-oxide species on hydrochar support and the catalytic active sites modification via calcination in oxygen were investigated and the transformations mechanism of Al-oxide species at varying hydrothermal and calcination temperatures was explored. The results showed that nano-size Al-containing species were uniformly loaded on carbon support via hydrothermal carbonization below 200 degrees C and the prepared Al loaded hydrochar at 180 degrees C after calcination at 300 degrees C yielded 39.5% fructose with 92.6% selectivity in acetone/ water reaction medium at 160 degrees C for 20 min. The catalysts prepared at a hydrothermal temperature below 200 degrees C facilitated the formation of an amorphous Al-containing structure less than 0.5 nm, and calcination at 300 degrees C under aerobic conditions formed the effective active sites. This sustainable and straightforward route of loading nano-metal Al-containing species on hydrochar support as glucose to fructose isomerization catalyst has high potential in biorefining.

Abstract:The one-pot synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose as a cheap feedstock under mild conditions continues to be challenging for the chemical industry. Herein, a solid acid-base bifunctional catalyst was prepared by the postsynthetic modification of MCM-41 mesoporous silica with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane and subsequent anchoring of sulfanilic acid to its surface. A combination of N-2 sorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy studies proved that the ordered mesostructure of MCM-41 was preserved during the process of catalyst preparation. The as-synthesized catalyst was successful in the one-pot production of HMF from glucose in an aqueous medium. The influences of numerous reaction parameters on the HMF yield were examined in detail. In optimal circumstances, 89% HMF was obtained by glucose conversion at 100 degrees C and 120 min using 20 mg of catalyst. Remarkably, the catalyst was tested up to six recycles and demonstrated no observable drop in catalytic performance, indicating its potential for industry applications.

Abstract:Since efficient isomerization of glucose to fructose is vital for valorizing cellulose fraction of biomass to value-added chemicals, an approach of engineering aluminum-hydrochar catalyst by impregnating aluminum on swollen cellulose derived hydrochar has been studied. The results showed that Al-hydrochar calcinated at 300°C achieved fructose yield of 26.3% in acetone/H2O reaction medium. It was found that the amorphous Al structures with nano-size on the surface of the carbon microspheres were the major contributor of the catalytic activity on glucose to fructose isomerization, while the formation of Al crystal had an inhibition effect on glucose isomerization. The deactivation study of Al-hydrochar catalysts showed the exfoliation of colloidal carbon containing aluminum active catalytic sites. This finding provides a novel strategy for efficient isomerization of glucose by Al-hydrochar prepared through hydrothermal carbonization and mild calcination activation process.
Highly Efficient Hydrotalcite/1-Butanol Catalytic System for the Production of the High-Yield Fructose Crystal from Glucose

Abstract:Catalytic isomerization of glucose to fructose is a key step for the synthesis of bioplastics and biofuels as well as sweeteners. In this study, a record fructose yield of greater than 50% with selectivity exceeding 80% was obtained from glucose concentration of 10 wt % by adopting a 1-butanol/hydrotalcite catalytic system. In this novel process, Mg2+ leaching from hydrotalcite, which is an important issue when utilizing hydrotalcite for glucose isomerization in aqueous solution, was negligible during the reaction. NMR study confirmed that the absence of deuterium at the C-1 position of the fructose product as well as C-2 position of glucose-2-D clearly supports the base-catalyzed deprotonation of the C-2 position in glucose. Also, density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported the selective formation of fructose from glucose over hydrotalcite surface in 1-butanol than other solvents. Notably, after glucose isomerization, the highly pure glucose (91%) and fructose crystals (95%) were recovered easily from 1-butanol solvent by subsequent cooling and filtration without requiring chromatographic separation. Therefore, the hydrotalcite/1-butanol catalytic system is simple, inexpensive, and a green process for the high-yield fructose production from glucose when compared with current industrial procedures that rely on enzymatic isomerization reactions and chromatographic separations.

Abstract:Hydrochar microspheres supported Al catalysts with hierarchically porous structure (Al/HPHMs) for glucose to fructose isomerization were fabricated. Superior catalytic selectivity (93.3%) and fructose yield (32.6%) were achieved in aqueous under 160 °C for 20 min. Hierarchically porous structure was formed after KHCO3 and K2CO3 activation and the roles of KHCO3 and K2CO3 in controlling the Al phase and tailoring morphology of hydrochar supported Al were evaluated. The major active sites were characterized as Al hydroxides including β-Al(OH)3, γ-Al(OH)3, γ-AlO(OH), Al-C-O linkages. Active sites by KHCO3 activation with high contents of Al-C-O and Al(OH)3 have better selectivity. Oxygen-containing functional groups including aluminum‑oxygen groups on the hydrochar microspheres have contributed to the formation of hydrogen bond and π-π interactions between glucose and Al species. Green process synthesized aluminum-hydrochars have potential for their application as a variety of stable, recyclable, and efficient catalysts for lignocellulosic biorefining.
Maleic acid and aluminum chloride catalyzed conversion of glucose to 5-(hydroxymethyl) furfural and levulinic acid in aqueous media

Abstract:Maleic acid (MA) and AlCl3 self-assemble into catalytic complexes (Al-(MA)(2)-(OH)(2)(aq)) with improved selectivity for converting glucose to HMF, and levulinic acid. The calculated activation energy (E-a) of the MA-aluminum catalyzed glucose-to-fructose isomerization is 95 kJ mol(-1) compared to 149 kJ mol(-1) for HCl and AlCl3 alone. Furthermore, conversion of fructose to HMF is enhanced. The catalytic conversion of fructose to HMF by MA and AlCl3 at 180 degrees C is 1.7x faster with 3.3x higher selectivity when compared to HCl with AlCl3. Liquid C-13 NMR spectra results indicate that glucose undergoes a ring-opening process in aqueous solution when maleic acid is introduced, which we hypothesize facilitates the hydride shift in glucose for isomerization leading to enhanced rates and selectivity. Improved selectivity of glucose conversion to HMF and levulinic acid could improve the economics of producing these value-added chemicals for use in renewable, sustainable polymers.

Abstract:Corn stover derived hydrochar (HC) doped with aluminum nanoparticles was synthesized through the facile onepot hydrothermal carbonization for glucose to fructose isomerization. Amorphous aluminum nanoparticles with crystalline size less than 0.5 nm were uniformly loaded on hydrochar. The phase of the Al-oxide nanoparticles was tailored through aerobic/anaerobic calcination. The results showed that the amorphous aluminum nanocrystals with six coordinated Al-oxide structure were formed under oxygen calcination, which facilitated the high catalytic activity and selectivity of glucose isomerization. It was found that catalysts prepared at hydrothermal temperature of 180 degrees C and further calcinated at 300 degrees C under aerobic condition (Al/HC180-300/O) achieved a fructose yield of 42.6% and a selectivity of 83.6% at 180 degrees C for 5 min. The kinetics, catalytic mechanism, and the deactivation mechanism of the glucose to fructose were further studied using Al/HC180-300/O catalyst. This study provides a high energy efficiency and low metal loading carbon-based catalysts synthetic approach applicable for biorefinery.

Abstract:Glucose isomerization to fructose is a crucial step for the efficient production of fuel and valuable chemicals from renewable carbohydrates. Aluminum (Al) was introduced into the structure of a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) by a simple thermal polycondensation of urea and aluminum chloride, and thereby, provided a series of Al-doped g-C3N4 (xAl-UCN) catalysts for the isomerization reaction. A high fructose yield of 48.29%, comparable to the quantitative yields (ca. 50%) by enzymatic routes, was achieved with the 0.5Al–UCN catalyst. Detailed characterizations of a series of Al–UCN catalysts, with different Al loadings, showed that 1) the Al loading amount has a profound effect on the physical-chemical properties of Al–UCN catalysts; 2) excess Al loading can inhibit the formation of a crystalline g-C3N4 structure; and 3) at lower Al loadings, the Al appears to be doped into the g-C3N4 framework possibly via coordination bonds. The mechanism for glucose isomerization to fructose may involve both Lewis acid and base catalyzed routes, with the coordinated Al species (Al[6]) providing Lewis acidity, and N-containing groups on g-C3N4 providing basicity. The additive effect of this dual-functionality is likely responsible for the high catalytic activity. The 0.5Al–UCN catalyst was readily recycled, demonstrating near-constant activity after 5 cycles of use. Altogether, glucose isomerization to fructose over the readily synthesized and recyclable Al–UCN catalyst could provide a highly-efficient and cost-effective step in lignocellulosic biomass valorization.

Abstract:Driven by the worldwide demand for sustainable resources and renewable energy, the synthesis of bio-based platform chemicals has attracted broad interest. The isomerisation of glucose to fructose acts as a critical intermediate step among many chemical synthesis routes. In this study, biochar (BC), graphitic oxide (GIO), and graphene oxide (GO) were used as carbon supports to synthesize Al-impregnated heterogeneous catalysts, which were then used for glucose isomerisation under microwave heating in the water at 140 degrees C. The kinetics model with parameters was used to reveal the interplay of the active sites and compare the activity of the three carbon-based catalysis systems. Catalyst characterisation results showed effective aluminium (Al) impregnation onto the three types of catalysts, and it was found that GIO-Al200 and GO-Al200 showed comparable catalytic activity (fructose yield of 34.3e35.0%) for glucose isomerisation. At the same time, BC-Al200 exhibited slightly lower catalytic activity (fructose yield of 29.4%). The conversion kinetics suggested similar catalytic mechanisms on the three catalysts while BC-Al200 manifested slower kinetics, possibly implying higher activation energy. The fructose selectivity decreased with increasing time due to the formation of side products, yet BC-Al200 resulted in less carbon loss than GIO-Al200 and GO-Al200, probably attributed to its lower catalytic activity and higher pH buffering capacity. A green synthesis route of this study promotes biomass valorisation and makes engineered biochar a promising carbon-based catalyst for sustainable biorefinery. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Technology of Glucose Oxidation over Au/C Catalyst

Abstract:A series of Au/C nano-catalyst were prepared with sol-immobilization(SI) method and characterized under Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM).The performance of the catalyst was evaluated on the oxidation reaction of glucose to sodium gluconate in alkaline solutions with oxygen as the oxidant under atmospheric pressure at various operating conditions.The results show that 1.0% Au/C SI prepared catalyst with less than 2 nm uniformly distributed gold nanoparticles has the best reaction performance.A preferred set of reaction condition is: 50 ℃,pH 9.5,the oxygen flow rate of 40 mL/min,catalyst 0.22 g,glucose concentration in the aqueous solution of 7.5%.At 1 h reaction time,both the glucose conversion and sodium gluconate selectivity are about 100%,and reaction turnover frequency(TOF) is up to 1 560 h-1.The above studies indicate that,SI method can make Au/C catalyst with a certain size of gold nanoparticles;the prepared catalyst has high activity and high selectivity,resulting in a short reaction time in heterogeneous reactions..
Engineering Functional Hydrochar Based Catalyst with Corn Stover and Model Components for Efficient Glucose Isomerization

Abstract:The conversion of biomass to functional hydrochar based catalysts for sustainable biorefinery application is critical but still challenging. In this study, mild hydrothermal treatment combined with limited oxygen calcination was developed to treat corn stover and model components for directional preparation of hydrochar based catalysts. The prepared catalysts with various Al active species, exhibited high specific surface area, hierarchical pores, cross-linked carbon microspheres, and excellent catalytic and recycling performances for glucose isomerization. After optimization, a fructose yield of 35.1% (selectivity 77.4%) was obtained at 160 degrees C for 20 min and it was still more than 25% after the fourth recycling. The reaction kinetics for glucose isomerization was studied. This study established the physicochemical properties performance relationships of hydrochar based catalysts. The optimized hydrothermal and calcination steps were crucial to improving performance by regulating the active sites and catalyst structures. Moreover, nitrogen, silicon and other elements coupled together could form functional compounds, which is vital for improving the catalytic performance by the synergy between support and Al active center. Three components in corn stover played distinct roles in the catalysis step. This study provides a novel way for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts from biomass, which could be applied in biorefining. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The development of sustainable, efficient routes for conversion of glucose in biomass to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important green intermediate in the production of value-added chemicals and fuels, has emerged due to the need to replace depletion of non-renewable fossil sources and climate change caused by their use. In this study, we describe a highly efficient reaction system for the production of HMF with a combination of homogeneous catalyst and heterogeneous catalyst in a polar cosolvent. The catalyst system consists of activated carbon (AC) supported aluminum (AC-Al) and maleic acid (MA) dissolved in a mixture of water, acetonitrile (ACN) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Kinetic analysis of HMF production from glucose shows that carbon supported aluminum catalyst in combination with homogeneous maleic acid favored fructose dehydration to HMF instead of the formation of insoluble humins when compared to dissolved aluminum chloride and maleic acid in the same solvent. In addition, the rate constant of HMF hydrolysis to levulinic and formic acid was lower for AC-Al compared to dissolved Al. Response surface methodology (RSM), with central composite rotatable design (CCRD), identified the optimum conditions for glucose conversion to HMF as 168 °C for 11 min with a predicted molar yield of 50.3 mol%, which compared well to the experimentally verified yield of 45.8 mol% for these reaction conditions. To test the influence of glucose concentration on HMF yield, a range of initial glucose concentrations were examined. Results showed that the HMF yield increased with the decrease of weight percentage of glucose, suggesting that second order reactions result in humins formation.
Isomerization Kinetics of Glucose to Fructose in Aqueous Solution with Magnesium‐Aluminum Hydrotalcites

Abstract:Mg-Al hydrotalcites for catalyzing glucose isomerization to fructose are prepared. Effects of atom ratios of Mg/Al ranging from 1 to 4 and calcination temperatures from 250-650 degrees C on catalytic performance were examined systematically. It was found that the hydrotalcite (Mg2Al1LDH) calcined at 450 degrees C with an atom ratio of Mg/Al=2 is an excellent catalyst for glucose isomerization. Characterizations by SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TG and BET demonstrated that the formed oxide condensed phase as well as the interaction with the alumina helps promote glucose isomerization reaction due to their appropriate basic sites at high calcination temperature. With Mg2Al1-450 as the catalyst, kinetic model analysis confirmed that the reaction of glucose isomerization to fructose was an exothermal reversible reaction; both the forward and reverse reactions are quasi-first-order reactions with activation energies of 71.82 kJ/mol and 48.15 kJ/mol, respectively, while the side reaction is a zero-order reaction with an activation energy of 94.22 kJ/mol. Therefore, high isomerization reaction temperature is not beneficial to enhance the yield and selectivity of fructose.
Aluminum alkoxy‐catalyzed biomass conversion of glucose to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural: Mechanistic study of the cooperative bifunctional catalysis

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations were performed to understand the detailed reaction mechanism of aluminum alkoxy-catalyzed conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using Al(OMe)3 as catalyst. Potential energy surfaces were studied for aggregates formed between the organic compounds and Al(OMe)3 and effects of the medium were considered via continuum solvent models. The reaction takes place via two stages: isomerization from glucose to fructose (stage I) and transformation of fructose to HMF (stage II). Stage II includes three successive dehydrations, which begins with a 1,2-elimination to form an enolate (i.e., B), continues with the formation of the acrolein moiety (i.e., D), and ends with the formation of the furan ring (i.e., HMF). All of these steps are facilitated by aluminum alkoxy catalysis. The highest barriers for stage I and stage II are 23.9 and 31.2 kcal/mol, respectively, and the overall catalytic reaction is highly exothermic. The energetic and geometric results indicate that the catalyzed reaction path has feasible kinetics and thermodynamics and is consistent with the experimental process under high temperature (i.e., 120 °C). Remarkably, the released water molecules in stage II act as the product, reactant, proton shuttle, as well as stabilizer in the conversion of fructose to HMF. The metal-ligand functionality of the Al(OMe)3 catalyst, which combines cooperative Lewis acid and Lewis base properties and thereby enables proton shuttling, plays a crucial role in the overall catalysis and is responsible for the high reactivity. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of AlNb/SBA-15 catalysts with various Al/Nb atom ratios were prepared by impregnation method for efficient conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Characterization by SEM, TEM, BET and XRD showed that the microstructure after impregnation of the active components was preserved, similar to that of SBA-15, although the pore size and specific surface area decreased to some extent with the increase of Al/Nb atom ratio due to the thickening of the pore wall, which was due to the deposition of the active component salts. Py-IR and NH3-TPD analysis indicated that AlNb/SBA-15 had both Bronsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites simultaneously after incorporation of the Al species and they were tunable by adjusting the Al/Nb atom ratio. The catalyst with Al/Nb atom ratio of 2:3 exhibited the suitable strength of Lewis and Bronsted acid and the highest total acid amount, as a result, showing the highest catalytic activity in glucose dehydration to HMF. As high as 55.7% of HMF yield with 93.4% glucose conversion was obtained when reacting at 170 degrees C for 6.0h using methyl iso-butyl ketone (MIBK)/water with a volume ratio of 2 as the reaction media.

Abstract:The Fischer–Helferich glycosidation reaction is generally the initial step in the conversion of glucose to levulinate in alcohol media. However, the relevant molecular mechanism catalyzed by Al-based catalysts is still not well understood. In this work, the reaction mechanism of the glycosidation from glucose to methyl glycosides catalyzed by Al 3+ coordinated with methanol/methoxyl was investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The whole reaction process includes ring-opening, addition, and ring-closure events. The addition of methanol to the ring-opening structure of glucose makes the electronegativity of C1 site stronger to proceed with the following ring-closure reaction. Among the 28 kinds of ways of ring-closure reaction, the most preferred way is to close the loop through the six-membered ring (O5–C1) to generate methyl glucoside (MDGP). The rate-determining step is the ring-closure and the Al 3+ shows a great catalytic effect which is mainly reflected in coordinating with the solvents to transfer protons. The results would be helpful to understanding the Fischer–Helferich glycosidation mechanism catalyzed by Al-based catalysts and comprehend the conversion of glucose to high value-added chemicals.

Glucose Isomerization to Fructose Catalyzed by MgZr Mixed Oxides in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The catalytic isomerization of glucose to fructose plays a pivotal role in the application of biomass as a feedstock for chemicals. Herein, we propose a facile solid-state-grinding strategy to construct ZrO2/MgO mixed oxides, which offered an excellent fructose yield of over 34.55% and a high selectivity of 80.52% (80 °C, 2 h). The co-mingling of amphiphilic ZrO2 with MgO improved the unfavorable moderate/strongly basic site distribution on MgO, which can prohibit the side reactions during the reaction and enhance the fructose selectivity. Based on the catalyst characterizations, MgO was deposited on the ZrO2 surface by plugging the pores, and the addition of ZrO2 lessened the quantity of strongly basic sites of MgO. Additionally, the presence of ZrO2 largely enhanced the catalyst stability in comparison with pure MgO by recycling experiments.

Abstract:The efficient transformation of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is crucial for sustainable bio-refinery processes, but achieving high production efficiency remains challenging. In this study, we presented the preparation of Al-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically MIL-53(Al), MIL-53(Al)-NO2, and MIL-53(Al)-NH2, using different ligands as catalysts to enhance the production of 5-HMF from glucose. Comprehensive characterization provided valuable insights into the properties of the synthesized MOFs. The synthesized MOFs exhibited varied MIL-53(Al) states, morphologies, and thermal stabilities based on the different ligands employed, which in turn affected their catalytic performance. Among the Al-containing MOFs synthesized, MIL-53(Al)-NH2 demonstrated remarkable catalytic capabilities for the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF. This MOF achieved an impressive 5-HMF yield of 53% and a reaction selectivity of 54%. The catalytic efficiency was further enhanced by leveraging the synergistic effect of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 in combination with Amberlyst-36, resulting in a 5-HMF yield of 59% and a reaction selectivity of 60%.

Abstract:Abstract This work reports the continuous isomerization of glucose to fructose in aqueous media under mild conditions using a mixed oxide hydrotalcite‐derived catalyst based on Ca and Al. Different operational parameters of the continuous flow fix‐bed catalytic reactor system were studied. At the optimal conditions, the Ca−Al‐based catalyst achieved a very high conversion and almost quantitative selectivity towards fructose, this being one of the few successful examples of a heterogeneous catalyst capable of carrying out this reaction in a continuous process. Importantly, catalytic activity held steady during four hours on stream, and slight deactivation occurring could be practically overcome by thermal regeneration of the catalyst.

Abstract:Recently, much attention has been paid to the development of technologies that facilitate the conversion of biomass into platform chemicals such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). In this paper, a tin-containing silica molecular sieve (Sn-MCM-41) was found to act as a bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst for the efficient conversion of glucose into 5-HMF in ionic liquid. In the presence of [EMIM]Br, the yield of 5-HMF converted from glucose reached 70% at 110 °C after 4 h. During the reaction, the active center of the catalyst first catalyzed the isomerization of glucose into fructose and then the dehydration of fructose into 5-HMF. After the reaction, the heterogeneous catalyst Sn-MCM-41 could be easily recovered and reused without a significant loss in activity. The catalyst Sn-MCM-41 was also able to catalyze the conversion of fructose into 5-HMF at an 80% yield. Moreover, the low toxicity of the Sn-based catalyst makes the method a greener approach for the conversion of saccharides into 5-HMF.
