Abstract:The literal translation has always been misunderstood. It is either confused with the for word translation or blamed for its illisibility. Based on the translation theories and the practices of Benjamin, Berman and Steiner, this article is to reevaluate the literal translation from its linguistic philosophical, poetical, ethical and cultural dimensions and thereby to clear up people’s misunderstandings of literal translation and to confirm the importance of the latter to translation studies and practices.

Abstract:Based on an analysis into the developemt of Newmark's translation theory, this paper is of opiniib that the method of literal translation and the method of free translation are a unity of opposites either of which can be dispensed with, Communicative translation, where transmission of information contained in the original is stressed, places meaning before form and thus favors free translation. Semantic translation, which attempts to cover the whole of the meaning in the original and at the same time retains the form of the original as much as possible, favors literal translation. Literal translation is the base, whereas the translation is an aid and a supplement to literal translation.

Abstract:This paper is about two extreme methods of translation: free and literal translations. These two methods are important in differentiating between the different translated texts especially because there are numerous other methods between these two extremes. This paper aimed at presenting a detailed explanation of two important methods of translation: literal and free. The aim is to show the difference between them, and which one is better for using in translating texts. To do this, the researcher wrote three sections. The first section introduced the concepts to be researched. The second section reviewed the different methods of translation. The third section showed the difference between the two major methods of translation, namely literal and free translation. The study concluded that literal translation is risky because it ignores the target language. It does not take into account the grammatical distinctions between the source and target languages, even if they may come from different language families. Conversely, in the context of free translation, the translator translates freely without constraints. He is not strictly constrained by the source language rules. The type of text or context may sometimes entail the method of translation to be chosen by the translator.

Abstract:Artistic conception is the soul of literary translation.Literal translation and free translation are not only the two methods but also the two disputing ones in translation field.On the basis of stating the definitions of literal translation,free translation and the relationship between them,the definition of literary translation and its main task,the author compares and analyses Zhang Guruo's Chinese version of Tess and Sun Zhili and Tang Huixin's version.By Comparing and analyzing the two versions' differences in words and syntax,and how these differences affect the transmitting of the artistic conception of the original work,the paper explores which method is better to perfectly transmit the artistic conception of the original work,literal translation or free translation.

Abstract:Historically, the status of translation and translators has changed with the ascendance of monolingualism. Even today, translation is not fully recognized as an independent field of study, and translators as well as translation theorists are not without blame for this. The requirements for a good translation vary with each text. The concepts of free and literal translation are questionable and need to be rexamined. A cross-cultural study of translation including non-Indo-European languages may help us to break out of this dichotomy, as may the study of oral cultures.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:In translating advertisements, there are things to keep in mind. First, ad text has a different type of character from other text, secondly, there are limitations in the ad itself. An advertisement is limited to customs and habits, religion and beliefs, norms and ethics as well as the use of language and language style. This implies that an advertisement cannot freely express the ideas or ideas of producers to potential consumers, especially if the advertisement is aimed at consumers who have different languages and of course different cultures. A picture or sentence that can be considered neutral in one area but has a different interpretation in another. For example: in a print media commercial advertisement issued by the local government, one type of regional superior product is written which is called 'sarong goyor'. If this advertisement is given to an audience outside the area where the source text originates, then the word sarong goyor may become lepas in its meaning. For this reason, in translating a text, the translator needs to understand the approach, strategy and ideology used by the translator.

Abstract:As Fu Lei said,conversations in literary works are "literal colloquialism".Being spoken language,they should be translated as "utterances".It requires translators not only to pay attention to the syntactic correctness but also to make them in agreement with the customs of expression and styles of conversation.Furthermore,it makes the readers to see the very speakers when they "hear" the translation which is required to be coincident to the identity,status,mentality,mood and manner of the speakers;meanwhile to be coincident to the special occasion,situation and context in order to demonstrate or serve as a foil to the images,personalities and features of the characters.To achieve this aim,translators have to pay more attention to the lexical differences between Chinese and French,and to constantly enrich their spoken language database.Translation,acknowledged as a tough task by Fu Lei,is worth researching and investigating.

Abstract:What is the true nature of literalism? The present article argues that literalism is in fact word translation plus syntax transplantation, imposing SL's peculiar syntax on TL words, treating TL as a syntactically unpatterned system. This true essence of literalism has, for the past two thousand years, escaped people's attention and literalism has been taken by many as faithful translation or, in more recent times, as formal-equivalence. Since literalism produces, as argued here, a 'hybrid' of TL words and untranslated SL features, it cannot be treated as TL's formal-equivalence and it is no alternative approach to fidelity. To gain a fuller picture, the present article also discusses the cause of literalism and the reason or pragmatic need for its survival.

Abstract:For a long time past, the relation between form and spirit has been at once a most concerned and contentious topic amongst translation circles. In the past two centuries, there once arose two debates on the relation between formal resemblance and spiritual resemblance, bearing which in mind, this article hereupon brings perspectives from many a facet into order and analysis for the sake of the discovery of the crux of the conflict. Henceforth, by means of such concepts as form, meaning and content, a boundary between form and spirit is newly set, whereupon new approaches have been touched upon to provide a solution to this conflict.

Abstract:Abstract Non-literary translation involves every area of social life, including politics, economics, law, scientific technology, culture. No matter what position non-literary translation possesses in history, its current absolute advantage is undeniable. For China, as the globalization accelerates and international contact increases, almost all government institutions have set up foreign affairs sections as well as the Foreign Ministry which is the specialized foreign contact institution. Translation is also indispensability for multinational corporations and large business to conduct crossborder production, procurement and marketing. It is also important in international contact of the research institutions and non-government organizations. All the translations these institutions need are non-literary translation.This thesis includes the basic principle of plain English and the method to deal with the sentences and the method to simplify the translations. It explores the method to make the non-literary translation simple and clear.

Abstract:Current translation theories and translation critiques generally focus on a contrastive analysis between the original text and the rendered one.Little attention is paid to another dimension of the translating process,i.e.the impact of translation on the target language.In the history of translation,however,there have always been great translators who set up the transformation of the target lan-guage as the main objective of their work.This objective has been either neglected or misinterpreted,as in the case of Lu Xun.But if we examine the development of modern Chinese language,we will see that both the modern political discourse and the literary language in China have been deeply influenced by translated texts.

Abstract:In modern Japan, especially in the Meiji period (1868-1912), translations occupied a dominant position in the literary polysystem. This paper claims that, since the Meiji period, “competing translational norms” have existed in the Japanese literary polysystem, which is to say that “literal” (adequate) and “free” (acceptable) translations have existed in parallel, vying for superior status. Moreover, this paper traces the literalist tradition in modern Japan. Though “literal” translation has been widely criticized, the styles and expressions it created have made a significant contribution to the founding and development of the modern Japanese language and its literature. Among the arguments in favor of literal translation, Iwano Homei’s literal translation strategy—the so-called “straight translation”—had different features than the others, and thus the potential to produce translations that maintain the cohesion, coherence, information structure and illocutionary effects of the source text.
