Abstract: The $L_p$-Minkowski problem deals with the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with prescribed $p$-area measures. It extends the classical Minkowski problem and embraces several important geometric and physical applications. The Existence of solutions has been obtained in the sub-critical case $p>-n-1$, but the problem remains widely open in the super-critical case $p<-n-1$. In this paper, we introduce new ideas to solve the problem for all the super-critical exponents. A crucial ingredient in our proof is a topological method based on the calculation of the homology of a topological space of ellipsoids.

Abstract:Determining the topology of an algebraic surface is not only an interesting mathematical problem, but also a key issue in computer graphics and CAGD. An algorithm is proposed to determine the intrinsic topology of an implicit real algebraic surface f(x,y,z) = 0 in R3, where f(x,y,z) ∈ Q[x,y,z] and Q is the field of rational numbers. There exist algorithms to determine the topology for algebraic surfaces of special type [2, 3, 4, 7]. The CAD method proposed by Collins [1] can divide the space into cylindrical parts. But it does not give the connection information neither the intrinsic representation.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.
Topological control for min-max free boundary minimal surfaces

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Proof of the Toponogov Conjecture on Complete Surfaces

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Toponogov on complete convex planes, namely that such planes must contain an umbilic point, albeit at infinity. Our proof is indirect. It uses Fredholm regularity of an associated Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem and an existence result for holomorphic discs with Lagrangian boundary conditions, both of which apply to a putative counterexample. Corollaries of the main theorem include a Hawking-Penrose singularity-type theorem, as well as the proof of a conjecture of Milnor's from 1965 in the convex case.

Abstract:Ever since geometry was developed in ancient times, lines of shortest length have always been used in studying global problems. In this century the work of Bonnet, Cartan, Hadamard, Cohn-Vossen, Busemann, Synge, Rauch, Klingenberg, Berger, Bott, Penrose, Hawking, Cheeger, Gromoll, Meyer, Gromov and others demonstrates how the properties of geodesics can be used to study the global topological structure of manifolds with suitable assumptions on the curvature. Most of this work depends on the study of the variational properties of the length of the geodesics that were involved in the problem. Usually the existence of the extremal geodesics is not difficult to prove. The role of the curvature appears in the second variational formula. Since a geodesic is one-dimensional, one needs to know the information of the curvature tensor along the two-dimensional planes which are tangential to the geodesic. As a result, one usually makes assumptions on the sectional curvature and the Ricci curvature of the manifold. If one wants to study parts of the curvature tensor which are much weaker than the Ricci curvature and the sectional curvature, geodesics do not seem to be adequate, and extremal objects of higher dimension are natural tools. A natural scalar invariant of the curvature tensor is the scalar curvature. The scalar curvature turns out to play an important role in general relativity also.Lichnerowicz [5] was the first person to find a topological obstruction to the existence of metrics with positive scalar curvature. Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to give an affirmative answer to the long-standing conjecture which asserts that the affine map is a uniquely extremal quasiconformal map in the Teichmuller space of the complex plane punctured at the integer lattice points. In addition we derive a corollary related to the geometry of the corresponding Teichmuller space. Besides that we consider the classical dual extremal problem which naturally arises in the tangent space of the Teichmuller space. In particular we prove the uniqueness of Hahn-Banach extension of the associated linear functional given on the Bergman space of the integer lattice domain. Several useful estimates related to the local and global properties of integrable meromorphic functions and the delta functional (see the definition below) are also obtained. These estimates are intended to study the behavior of integrable functions near singularities and they are valid in general settings.

Abstract:A unifying framework for some extremal problems on locally compact Abelian groups is considered, special cases of which include the Delsarte and Turán extremal problems. A slight variation of the extremal problem is introduced and the different formulations are studied for equivalence. Extending previous work, a general result on existence of extremal functions for the new variant is proved under a certain general topological condition.

Abstract:A gap in the proof prevents us to show that surfaces with constant mean curvature closed to 1/2 in H2 X R and having boundary with curvature greater than one, contained in a horizontal section P of H2 X R are topological disks, provided they are contained in one of the two halfspaces determined by P. This is the analogue in H2 X R of a result in R3 by A. Ros and H. Rosenberg [13, Theorem 2].

Abstract:Given two Riemann surfaces with boundary and a homotopy class of topological embeddings between them, there is a conformal embedding in the homotopy class if and only if the extremal length of every simple multi-curve is decreased under the embedding. Furthermore, the homotopy class has a conformal embedding that misses an open disk if and only if extremal lengths are decreased by a definite ratio. This ratio remains bounded away from one under covers.

Abstract:We prove a general fusion theorem for complete orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. As a consequence, complete orientable minimal surfaces of weak finite total curvature with exotic geometry are produced. More specifically, universal surfaces (i.e., surfaces from which all minimal surfaces can be recovered) and space-filling surfaces with arbitrary genus and no symmetries.

Abstract:IN 1970 Lawson [22] proved that two embedded closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in the unit three-dimensional sphere S3 in lRJ are ambiently isotopic in S3. Lawson proved this theorem by first proving that an embedded orientable closed minimal surface of genus y in a closed orientable Riemannian three-manifold M’ with positive Ricci curvature disconnects M-’ into two genus-8 handlebodics. A result of Frankel [7] was used to prove this. Lawson then applied a deep result of Waldhauscn [33] that states that decompositions of SJ into two genus-cl handlebodies arc unique up to ambient isotopy. More prcciscly. Waldhauscn’s uniqucncss thcorcm states that whenever a closed surface of genus y in S” separates SJ into handlcbodics, then the embedding of the surface is as simple as possible; in other words, the surface is obtained from a two-sphere Sz c S’ by adding handles in an unknotted manner. Mccks [23] gcncralizcd Lawson’s argument to the case of oricntablc closed minimal surfaces in a closed ,V3 with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Meek’s result and another topological uniqueness result of Waldhauscn [33] implies that two closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in S2 x S’ with the usual product metric arc ambiently isotopic. Finally, Meeks-Simon-Yau [25] proved that if X is a closed minimal surface in S’ equipped with a metric of non-negative scalar curvature, then X disconnects S3 into two handlebodies and hence dctcrmincs a unique ambient class in S’. In [23] Mceks considered the problem of the topological uniqueness of minimal surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space. In particular, Meeks proved that any two compact diffeomorphic minimal surfaces, with boundary a simple closed curve on the boundary of a smooth convex ball, are ambiently isotopic in the ball. Later Hall [I33 showed that there exist two simple closed curves on the unit sphere S* that bound a knotted minimal surface of genus one. In this paper we will use global properties of stable minimal surfaces in [w’ to prove: A properly embedded minimal surface of finite topological type in R’ is unknotted. In particular, if X, and IEz are two such diffeomorphic surfaces, then they are ambiently isotopic. This is the main result of our paper and it is restated in a more precise form in Theorem 5.1. Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we present finite topological type theorems for open manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, under almost maximal local rewinding volume. Unlike previous related research, our theorems remove the constraints of sectional curvature or conjugate radius, which were crucial additional assumptions on metric regularity in prior results. Notably, our settings do not necessarily satisfy a triangle comparison of Toponogov type. In fact, the method we adopt also extends to many previous related studies.

Abstract:For a surface immersed in a three-dimensional space endowed with a norm instead of an inner product, one can define analogous concepts of curvature and metric. With these concepts in mind, various questions immediately appear. The aim of this paper is to propose and answer some of those questions. In this framework we prove several characterizations of minimal surfaces, and analogues of some global theorems (e.g., Hadamard-type theorems) are also derived. A result on the curvature of surfaces of constant Minkowski width is also given. Finally, we study the ambient metric induced on the surface, proving an extension of the classical Bonnet theorem.

Abstract:With respect to every Riemannian metric, the Teichmüller metric, and the Thurston metric on Teichmüller space, we show that there exist measured foliations on surfaces whose extremal length functions are not convex. Abstract:We construct and study extremal functions, which are defined by distance functions of convex bodies. Such functions take values in the moduli spaces of geometric objects associated with these convex bodies. Examples of such functions are the homogeneous arithmetic minimum of a function in a lattice, the Hermite constant, and the critical determinant of a body. We define and investigate extremal functions that yield optimal packings of bodies, the best values of covering constants, and optimal solutions to Diophantine approximation problems.

Abstract:Classical extremal length (or conformal modulus) is a conformal invariant involving families of paths on the Riemann sphere. In ``Extremal length and functional completion'', Fuglede initiated an abstract theory of extremal length which has since been widely applied. Concentrating on duality properties and applications to quasiconformal analysis, we demonstrate the flexibility of the theory and present recent advances in three different settings: Extremal length and uniformization of metric surfaces, Extremal length of families of surfaces and quasiconformal maps between $n$-dimensional spaces, and Schramm's transboundary extremal length and conformal maps between multiply connected plane domains.
