Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal ternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distance six. The problem is solved with a small number of lengths undetermined. The previously known results are those with code length no greater than 10.

Abstract:Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. Several examples are presented to show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.

Abstract:The existence of optimal binary self-dual codes is a long-standing research problem. In this paper, we present some results concerning the decomposition of binary self-dual codes with a dihedral automorphism group D-2p, where p is a prime. These results are applied to construct new self-dual codes with length 78 or 116. We obtain 16 inequivalent self-dual [78, 39, 14] codes, four of which have new weight enumerators. We also show that there are at least 141 inequivalent self-dual [116, 58, 18] codes, most of which are new up to equivalence. Meanwhile, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes. We use these restrictions to exclude some possible weight enumerators of self-dual codes with lengths 74, 76, 82, 98 and 100.

Abstract:Gauss periods taking exactly two values are closely related to two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and strongly regular Cayley graphs. They have been extensively studied in the work of Schmidt and White and others. In this paper, we consider the question of when Gauss periods take exactly three rational values. We obtain numerical necessary conditions for Gauss periods to take exactly three rational values. We show that in certain cases, the necessary conditions obtained are also sufficient. We give numerous examples where the Gauss periods take exactly three values. Furthermore, we discuss connections between three-valued Gauss periods and combinatorial structures such as circulant weighing matrices and three-class association schemes.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are an important subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in data storage systems, communication systems and consumer electronics. In this paper, two families of optimal ternary cyclic codes are presented. The first family of cyclic codes has parameters [3m−1,3m−1−2m,4] and contains a class of conjectured cyclic codes and several new classes of optimal cyclic codes. The second family of cyclic codes has parameters [3m−1,3m−2−2m,5] and contains a number of classes of cyclic codes that are obtained from perfect nonlinear functions over F3m, where m>1 and is a positive integer.

Abstract:This paper aims to construct optimal quaternary additive codes with non-integer dimensions. Firstly, we propose combinatorial constructions of quaternary additive constant-weight codes, alongside additive anticode construction. Subsequently, we propose generalized Construction X, which facilitates the construction of non-integer dimensional optimal additive codes from linear codes. Then, we construct ten classes of optimal quaternary non-integer dimensional additive codes through these two methods. As an application, we also determine the optimal additive $[n,3.5,n-t]_4$ codes for all $t$ with variable $n$, except for $t=6,7,12$.

Abstract:A class of optimal three-weight cyclic codes over , with , achieving the Griesmer bound, was presented by Heng and Yue (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 62(8):4501–4513, 2016. https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2016.2550029). In this paper we study some of the subfield codes of this class of optimal cyclic codes when . The weight distributions of the subfield codes are settled. It turns out that some of these codes are optimal and others have the best known parameters. The duals of the subfield codes are also investigated and found to be almost optimal with respect to the sphere-packing bound. In addition, the covering structure for the studied subfield codes is determined. Some of these codes are found to have the important property that any nonzero codeword is minimal, which is a desirable property that is useful in the design of a secret sharing scheme based on a linear code. Moreover, a specific example of a secret sharing scheme based on one of these subfield codes is given. Finally, a class of optimal two-weight linear codes over , achieving the Griesmer bound, whose duals are almost optimal with respect to the sphere-packing bound is presented. Through a different approach, this class of optimal two-weight linear codes was reported very recently by Heng (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 69(2):978–994, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2022.3203380). Furthermore, it is shown that these optimal codes can be used to construct strongly regular graphs.

Optimal Few-GHW Linear Codes and Their Subcode Support Weight Distributions

Abstract:Few-weight codes have been constructed and studied for many years, since their fascinating relations to finite geometries, strongly regular graphs and Boolean functions. Simplex codes are one-weight Griesmer $[\frac{q^k-1}{q-1},k ,q^{k-1}]_q$-linear codes and they meet all Griesmer bounds of the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes. All the subcodes with dimension $r$ of a $[\frac{q^k-1}{q-1},k ,q^{k-1}]_q$-simplex code have the same subcode support weight $\frac{q^{k-r}(q^r-1)}{q-1}$ for $1\leq r\leq k$. In this paper, we construct linear codes meeting the Griesmer bound of the $r$-generalized Hamming weight, such codes do not meet the Griesmer bound of the $j$-generalized Hamming weight for $1\leq j<r$. Moreover these codes have only few subcode support weights. The weight distribution and the subcode support weight distributions of these distance-optimal codes are determined. Linear codes constructed in this paper are natural generalizations of distance-optimal few-weight codes.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the theory of defining sets, two classes of five-weight or six-weight linear codes over Fp are constructed. The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined by means of Weil sums and a new type of exponential sums. In some case, there is an almost optimal code with respect to Griesmer bound, which is also an optimal one according to the online code table.

Abstract:An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight $w$ has linear size if and only if its distance $d$ is at least $2w-1$. When $d\geq 2w$, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of $d=2w-1$ has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result, the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are determined for all such codes of sufficiently large lengths. This solves an open problem of Etzion. The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are also determined for all $w\leq 6$, except in two cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite family of three-weight binary codes from linear codes over the ring R = F-2 + vF(2) + v(2)F(2)where v(3) = 1. These codes are defined as trace codes. They have the algebraic structure of abelian codes. Their Lee weight distributions are computed by employing character sums. The three-weight binary linear codes which we construct are shown to be optimal when m is odd and m > 1. They are cubic, that is to say quasi-cyclic of co-index three. An application to secret sharing schemes is given.

Abstract:This paper focuses on constructing ternary optimal self-orthogonal codes with . Firstly, we generalize the method of constructing linear codes to obtain a general method for constructing self-orthogonal codes. Secondly, optimal self-orthogonal codes with all lengths on are constructed, except for two codes. Moreover, some 6-dimensional optimal self-orthogonal codes with lengths and are obtained. Finally, we obtain distance formulas for ternary optimal self-orthogonal codes according to the construction results.

Abstract:In previous study, few-weight optimal codes were constructed by working on defining sets on the rings 𝔽_q[u]/(u^2) , 𝔽_q[u]/(u^2-u) and 𝔽_q[u,v]/(u^2,v^2) . We give a unified approach of this construction on a general 𝔽_q -algebra R. By applying this approach to the special case R=𝔽_q[u]/(u^r) , we construct many new classes of linear codes, decide their weight enumerators and show that they are new two or three-weight codes optimal or distance optimal to the Griesmer bound.

Abstract:Cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The decoding error probability and the undetected error probability are usually bounded by or given from the weight distributions of the codes. Most researches are about the determination of the weight distributions of cyclic codes with few nonzeros, by using quadratic forms and exponential sums but limited to low moments. In this paper, we focus on the application of higher moments of the exponential sums to determine the weight distributions of a class of ternary cyclic codes with three nonzeros, combining with not only quadratic forms but also MacWilliams' identities. Another application of this paper is to emphasize the computer algebra system Magma for the investigation of the higher moments. In the end, the result is verified by one example using Matlab.
