Abstract:An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight $w$ has linear size if and only if its distance $d$ is at least $2w-1$. When $d\geq 2w$, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of $d=2w-1$ has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result, the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are determined for all such codes of sufficiently large lengths. This solves an open problem of Etzion. The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are also determined for all $w\leq 6$, except in two cases.

Abstract:The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight three have been determined by Chee, Ge and Ling with four cases in doubt. Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal quaternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distances five or six through group divisible codes and Room square approaches. The problem is solved leaving only five lengths undetermined. Previously, the results on the sizes of such quaternary constant-composition codes were scarce.

Abstract:The existence of optimal binary self-dual codes is a long-standing research problem. In this paper, we present some results concerning the decomposition of binary self-dual codes with a dihedral automorphism group D-2p, where p is a prime. These results are applied to construct new self-dual codes with length 78 or 116. We obtain 16 inequivalent self-dual [78, 39, 14] codes, four of which have new weight enumerators. We also show that there are at least 141 inequivalent self-dual [116, 58, 18] codes, most of which are new up to equivalence. Meanwhile, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes. We use these restrictions to exclude some possible weight enumerators of self-dual codes with lengths 74, 76, 82, 98 and 100.

Abstract:A $q$-ary code $C$ of length $n$ is a set of $n$-dimensional vectors (code words) with entries in $\{0, \ldots, q-1\}$. We say $C$ has constant weight $w$ if each code word has exactly $w$ nonzero entries. We say $C$ has minimum distance $d$ if any two distinct code words in $C$ differ in at least $d$ entries. We let $A_q(n, d, w)$ be the largest possible cardinality of any $q$-ary code of length $n$ with constant weight $w$ and minimum distance $d$. Very recently, Liu and Shangguan gave an asymptotically sharp estimate for $A_q(n, d, w)$ where $q, d, w$ are fixed, $d$ is odd and $n \rightarrow \infty$. In this note we answer a question of Liu and Shangguan by obtaining such an estimate in the case where $d$ is even.

Abstract:In previous study, few-weight optimal codes were constructed by working on defining sets on the rings 𝔽_q[u]/(u^2) , 𝔽_q[u]/(u^2-u) and 𝔽_q[u,v]/(u^2,v^2) . We give a unified approach of this construction on a general 𝔽_q -algebra R. By applying this approach to the special case R=𝔽_q[u]/(u^r) , we construct many new classes of linear codes, decide their weight enumerators and show that they are new two or three-weight codes optimal or distance optimal to the Griesmer bound.

Abstract:The weight distribution of a q-ary [n, k, d] linear code is an important research subject in coding theory. In a linear code, a code symbol is said to have locality r if it can be recovered by accessing at most r other code symbols. A q-ary locally repairable code (LRC) is an [n, k, d] linear code over Fq such that every code symbol has locality r, and is said to be optimal if the minimum distance attains the well-known Singleton-like bound. In this paper, we focus on the weight distributions of q-ary optimal LRCs with locality 2, minimum distance 5 and even dimension k. By analyzing the parity-check matrices involving locality, it is shown that the weight distributions of all q-ary optimal LRCs with locality 2, distance 5, even dimension k and code length n can be uniquely determined and explicit expressions of the weight distributions are given.

Abstract:In a paper by Guruswami et al., it was shown that the length n of a q-ary linear locally recoverable code with distance d >= 5 is upper bounded by O(dq(3)). Thus, it is a challenging problem to construct q-ary locally recoverable codes with distance d >= 5 and length approaching the upper bound. The same paper also gave an algorithmic construction of q-ary locally recoverable codes with locality r and length n = Omega r (q(2)) for d = 5 and 6, where Omega(r) means that the implicit constant depends on locality r. In this paper, we present an explicit construction of q-ary locally recoverable codes of distance d = 5 and 6 via binary constant weight codes. It turns out that 1) our construction is simpler and more explicit and 2) the length of our codes is greater than previously known.

Abstract:This paper aims to construct optimal quaternary additive codes with non-integer dimensions. Firstly, we propose combinatorial constructions of quaternary additive constant-weight codes, alongside additive anticode construction. Subsequently, we propose generalized Construction X, which facilitates the construction of non-integer dimensional optimal additive codes from linear codes. Then, we construct ten classes of optimal quaternary non-integer dimensional additive codes through these two methods. As an application, we also determine the optimal additive $[n,3.5,n-t]_4$ codes for all $t$ with variable $n$, except for $t=6,7,12$.

Abstract:Like classical block codes, a locally repairable code also obeys the Singleton-type bound (we call a locally repairable code optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound). In the breakthrough work of Tamo and Barg, several classes of optimal locally repairable codes were constructed via subcodes of Reed-Solomon codes. Thus, the lengths of the codes given by Tamo and Barg are upper bounded by the code alphabet size q. Recently, it was proved through the extension of construction by Tamo and Barg that the length of q-ary optimal locally repairable codes can be q + 1 by Jin et al. Surprisingly, Barg et al. presented a few examples of q-ary optimal locally repairable codes of small distance and locality with code length achieving roughly q(2). Very recently, it was further shown in the work of Li et al. that there exist q-ary optimal locally repairable codes with the length bigger than q + 1 and the distance proportional to n. Thus, it becomes an interesting and challenging problem to construct new families of q-ary optimal locally repairable codes of length bigger than q + 1. In this paper, we construct a class of optimal locally repairable codes of distances 3 and 4 with unbounded length (i.e., length of the codes is independent of the code alphabet size). Our technique is through cyclic codes with particular generator and parity-check polynomials that are carefully chosen.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent studies on $mathbb {Z}_{2}mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -additive cyclic codes, $mathbb {Z}_{2}mathbb {Z}_{2}[u]$ -cyclic codes and $mathbb {Z}_{2}mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive codes have been introduced by Aydogdu et al.. In this paper, we study $mathbb {Z}_{q}R$ -linear cyclic codes where $R=mathbb {Z}_{q}+umathbb {Z}_{q}, q$ is a prime number and $u^{2}=0$ . There are two major ingredients in this paper. The first is to investigate the algebraic structure of cyclic codes and their duals over ring $mathbb {Z}_{q}R$ , the spanning sets, the types and sizes of $mathbb {Z}_{q}R$ -cyclic codes and their duals as well. Based on this, the second ingredient is to present an infinite family of MDSS codes and obtain some illustrative examples of $q$ -ary cyclic codes with optimal parameters derived from the $mathbb {Z}_{q}R$ -cyclic codes.

Abstract:It has been a great challenge to construct new quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes. In particular, it is very hard to construct the quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance. So far, except for some sparse lengths, all known q-ary quantum MDS codes have minimum distance ≤q/2 + 1. In this paper, we provide a construction of the quantum MDS codes with minimum distance >q/2 + 1. In particular, we show the existence of the q-ary quantum MDS codes with length n = q2 + 1 and minimum distance d for any d q + 1 (this result extends those given in the works of Guardia (2011), Jin et al. (2010), and Kai an Zhu (2012)); and with length (q2 + 2)/3 and minimum distance d for any d (2q+2)/3 if 3|(q + 1). Our method is through Hermitian selforthogonal codes. The main idea of constructing the Hermitian self-orthogonal codes is based on the solvability in Fq of a system of homogenous equations over Fq2.

Abstract:It has become common knowledge that constructing q-ary quantum MDS codes with minimum distance bigger than $q/2+1$ is significantly more difficult than constructing those with minimum distance less than or equal to $q/2+1$. Despite of various constructions of q-ary quantum MDS codes, all known q-ary quantum MDS codes have minimum distance bounded by $q/2+1$ except for some lengths. The purpose of the current paper is to provide some new q-ary quantum MDS codes with minimum distance bigger than $q/2+1$. In this paper, we provide several classes of quantum MDS codes with minimum distance bigger than $q/2+1$. For instance, some examples in these classes include q-ary $[n,n-2k, k+1]$-quantum MDS codes for cases: (i) $q\equiv -1\bmod {5}, n=(q^2+4)/5$ and $1\le k\le (3q-2)/5$; (ii) $q\equiv -1\bmod {7}, n=(q^2+6)/7$ and $1\le k\le (4q-3)/7$; (iii) $2|q, q\equiv -1\bmod {3}, n=2(q^2-1)/3$ and $1\le k\le (2q-1)/3$; and (iv) $2|q, q\equiv -1\bmod {5}, n=2(q^2-1)/5$ and $1\le k\le (3q-2)/5$.

Abstract:We give elementary recursive constructions of quaternary self-orthogonal codes with dual distance three for all n ≥ 5. Consequently, good linear quantum codes of minimum distance three for such length n are obtained. Almost all of these linear quantum codes are optimal or near optimal.

Abstract:From the perspective of parity-check matrices, we present new constructions of q -ary maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes with multiple parities. Applying these constructions, some new types of MDS array codes with array numbers m-tau can be derived, where gcd(m,q)=1 . Moreover, an explicit construction of binary MDS array codes is also presented. Compared to the existing MDS array codes, one important characteristic of these codes is that their available code lengths are much longer, which is suitable for large-scale storage systems. In some particular cases, the maximum code lengths of these codes and their extension can be up to 2(m-tau) and 2(m-tau)+1 (or 2(m-tau)+2 ), respectively. Moreover, to demonstrate the applicability of our constructed MDS array codes, we present an effective generic decoding method for the erased errors. In particular, when there are no more than three erasures occurring, a scheduled algorithm for the syndrome computation of our explicit construction is further proposed, whose computational complexity is asymptotically optimal. Furthermore, this algorithm can be directly applied to the encoding procedure of their extended form. The simulation shows that our new MDS array codes have better encoding and decoding performances than the corresponding extended RS codes coupled with different algorithms.
