Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:Let R and R φ be associative rings with isomorphic subring lattices, and φ be a lattice isomorphism (or else a projection) of the ring R onto the ring R φ . We call R φ the projective image of a ring R and call R itself the projective preimage of a ring R φ . The main result of the first part of the paper is Theorem 5, which proves that the projective image R φ of a one-generated finite p -ring R is also one-generated if R φ at the same time is itself a p -ring. In the second part, we continue studying projections of matrix rings. The main result of this part is Theorems 6 and 7, which prove that if R = M n ( K ) is the ring of all square matrices of order n over a finite ring K with identity, and φ is a projection of the ring R onto the ring R φ , then R φ = M n ( K′ ), where K′ is a ring with identity, lattice-isomorphic to the ring K .

Abstract:Given an associative, not necessarily commutative, ring R with identity, a formal matrix calculus is introduced and developed for pairs of matrices over R. This calculus subsumes the theory of homogeneous systems of linear equations with coefficients in R. In the case when the ring R is a field, every pair is equivalent to a homogeneous system. Using the formal matrix calculus, two alternate presentations are given for the Grothendieck group $K_0 (R-mod, \oplus)$ of the category R-mod of finitely presented modules. One of these presentations suggests a homological interpretation, and so a complex is introduced whose 0-dimensional homology is naturally isomorphic to $K_0 (R-mod, \oplus).$ A computation shows that if R = k is a field, then the 1-dimensional homology group is given by the abelianization of the multiplicative group of k, modulo the subgroup {1, -1}. The formal matrix calculus, which consists of three rules of matrix operation, is the syntax of a deductive system whose completeness was proved by Prest. The three rules of inference of this deductive system correspond to the three rules of matrix operation, which appear in the formal matrix calculus as the Rules of Divisibility.

Abstract:The main goal of the paper is the discussion of a deeper interaction between matrix theory over polynomial rings over a field and typical methods of commutative algebra and related algebraic geometry. This is intended in the sense of bringing numerical algebraic invariants into the picture of determinantal ideals, with an emphasis on non-generic ones. In particular, there is a strong focus on square sparse matrices and features of the dual variety to a determinantal hypersurface. Though the overall goal is not exhausted here, one provides several environments where the present treatment has a degree of success.

A Solomon-Tits theorem for rings

Abstract:An analog of the Tits building is defined and studied for commutative rings. We prove a Solomon-Tits theorem when $R$ either satisfies a stable range condition, or is the ring of $S$-integers of a global field. We then define an analog of the Steinberg module of $R$, and study it both as a $\mathbb{Z}$-module and as a representation. We find the rank of Steinberg when $R$ is a finite ring, and compute the length of $\text{St}_2(R)\otimes\mathbb{Q}$ as a $\text{GL}_2(R)$-representation when $R$ is uniserial. As an application of these results, we produce a lower bound for the rank of the top-dimensional cohomology of principal congruence subgroups of nonprime level.

Abstract:Let R be an arbitrary ring. In this paper, the following statements are proved: (a) Each idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized if and only if each idempotent matrix over R has a characteristic vector. (b) An idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized under a similarity transformation if and only if it is equivalent to a diagonal matrix. (a) and (b) generalize Foster's and Steger's theorems to arbitrary rings. We give some new results about 0-similarity of idempotent matrices over R.

Abstract:We study rings whose modules and module homomorphisms display behavior similar to that of sets and their maps. For example, whenever there is an epimorphism A→B , there is a monomorphism B→A (Artinian principal ideal rings (PIR) satisfy this property and its dual for all modules). As a byproduct of this framework, we prove that a ring every factor ring of which cogenerates its cyclic right modules (one-sided version of Kaplansky's dual rings) is right Artinian and right serial. Consequently, R is an Artinian PIR if and only if every factor ring of R cogenerates its finitely generated right modules. These results can be viewed as partial answers to the CF problem, the FGF problem due to Faith and a question of Faith and Menal on strongly Johns rings. Some known results and the above one yield the following: A ring R is a direct sum of right Artinian right chain rings and Artinian PIR's if and only if every factor ring of R cogenerates its (uniform) cyclic right modules (with nonzero socle); so, such rings coincide with the right CES-rings of Jain and Lopez-Pérmouth, rings whose factors are right CF and rings that satisfy the above mentioned property for their cyclic right modules A and B . Finally, a ring is either simple Artinian or a right Artinian right chain ring if and only if one of any two cyclic right modules embeds in the other.

Archimedean Representation Theorem for modules over a commutative ring

Abstract:Pólya's Positivstellensatz and Handelman's Positivstellensatz are known to be concrete instances of the abstract Archimedean Representation Theorem for (commutative unital) rings. We generalise the Archimedean Representation Theorem to modules over rings. For example, consider the module of all symmetric matrices with entries in a polynomial ring, also known as matrix polynomials. Pólya's Positivstellensatz and Handelman's Positivstellensatz had been generalised by Scherer and Hol, and Lê and Du' respectively to matrix polynomials, using the method of effective estimates from analysis. We show that these two Positivstellensätze for matrix polynomials are concrete instances of our Archimedean Representation Theorem in the case of the module of symmetric matrix polynomials over the polynomial ring.

A Model Theoretic Perspective on Matrix Rings

Abstract:In this paper natural necessary and sufficient conditions for quantifier elimination of matrix rings $M_n(K)$ in the language of rings expanded by two unary functions, naming the trace and transposition, are identified. This is used together with invariant theory to prove quantifier elimination when $K$ is an intersection of real closed fields. On the other hand, it is shown that finding a natural \textit{definable} expansion with quantifier elimination of the theory of $M_n({\mathbb C})$ is closely related to the infamous simultaneous conjugacy problem in matrix theory. Finally, for various natural structures describing dimension-free matrices it is shown that no such elimination results can hold by establishing undecidability results.

Abstract:S. Frisch, showed that the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix ring IntTn(K)(Tn(D)):={f∈Tn(K)[x]|f(Tn(D))⊆Tn(D)} is a ring, where D is an integral domain with field of fractions K . Let R1⊆R2 be commutative rings with identity. In this paper, we study the set IntTn(R2)(Ω,Tn(R1)):={f∈Tn(R2)[x]|f(Ω)⊆Tn(R1)} for some subsets Ω⊆Tn(R1) . We generalize Frisch's result and show that IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1)):=IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1),Tn(R1)) is a ring. We state a lower bound for the Krull dimension of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings. Finally, we state the concept of Skolem closure of an ideal of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings and as a consequence, we obtain a classification of maximal ideals of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional vector space over the field with $p$ elements, where $p$ is a prime number. Given arbitrary $\alpha,\beta\in \mathrm{GL}(V)$, we consider the semidirect products $V\rtimes\langle \alpha\rangle$ and $V\rtimes\langle \beta\rangle$, and show that if $V\rtimes\langle \alpha\rangle$ and $V\rtimes\langle \beta\rangle$ are isomorphic, then $\alpha$ must be similar to a power of $\beta$ that generates the same subgroup as $\beta$; that is, if $H$ and $K$ are cyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ such that $V\rtimes H\cong V\rtimes K$, then $H$ and $K$ must be conjugate subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$. If we remove the cyclic condition, there exist examples of non-isomorphic, let alone non-conjugate, subgroups $H$ and $K$ of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ such that $V\rtimes H\cong V\rtimes K$. Even if we require that non-cyclic subgroups $H$ and $K$ of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ be abelian, we may still have $V\rtimes H\cong V\rtimes K$ with $H$ and $K$ non-conjugate in $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, but in this case, $H$ and $K$ must at least be isomorphic. If we replace $V$ by a free module $U$ over ${\mathbf Z}/p^m{\mathbf Z}$ of finite rank, with $m>1$, it may happen that $U\rtimes H\cong U\rtimes K$ for non-conjugate cyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(U)$. If we completely abandon our requirements on $V$, a sufficient criterion is given for a finite group $G$ to admit non-conjugate cyclic subgroups $H$ and $K$ of $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ such that $G\rtimes H\cong G\rtimes K$. This criterion is satisfied by many groups.

Abstract:Noetherian rings have played a fundamental role in commutative algebra, algebraic number theory, and algebraic geometry. Along with their dual, Artinian rings, they have many generalizations, including the notions of isonoetherian and isoartinian rings. In this paper, we prove that the Krull dimension of every isoartinian ring is at most one. We then use this result to provide a characterization of isoartinian rings. Specifically, we prove that a ring $R$ is isoartinian if and only if $R$ is uniquely isomorphic to the direct product of a finite number of rings of the following types: (i) Artinian local rings; (ii) non-Noetherian isoartinian local rings with a nilpotent maximal ideal; (iii) non-field principal ideal domains; (iv) Noetherian isoartinian rings $A$ with $\Min A$ being a singleton and $\Min A \subsetneq \Ass A$; (v) non-Noetherian isoartinian rings $A$ with $\Min A$ being a singleton and $\Min A \subsetneq \Ass A$; (vi) non-Noetherian isoartinian rings $A$ with a unique element in $\Min A$ that is not maximal, and $\Min A=\Ass A$. Several examples of these types of rings are also provided.

Abstract:We prove that for all integers k≥1 , q≥(k−1)4+6k , and m≥1 , every matrix in Mm(Fq) is a sum of two kth powers: Mm(Fq)={Ak+Bk|A,B∈Mm(Fq)} . We further generalize and refine this result in the cases when both B and C can be chosen to be invertible, cyclic, or split semisimple, when k is coprime to p , or when m is sufficiently large. We also give a criterion for the Waring problem in terms of stabilizers.

Abstract:We introduce the class E2 (resp. SE2) of commutative rings R with the property that each unimodular 2 x 2 matrix with entries in R extends to an invertible 3 x 3 matrix (resp. invertible 3 x 3 matrix whose (3, 3) entry is 0). Among noetherian domains of dimension 1, polynomial rings over Z or Hermite rings, only EDRs belong to the class. Using this, stable ranges, and units and projective modules interpretations, we reobtain (often refine) criteria due to Kaplansky, McGovern, Roitman, Shchedryk, Wiegand and obtain new criteria for a Hermite ring to be an EDR. For instance, we characterize Hermite rings which are EDRs by (1) means of equations involving unimodular triples and (2) surjectivity of some maps involving units of factor rings by principal ideals. We use these criteria to show that each Bezout ring R that is either a J2,1 domain or an (SU)2 ring (as introduced by Lorenzini) such that for each nonzero a 2 R there exists no nontrivial self-dual projective R/Ra-module of rank 1 generated by 2 elements (e.g., all its elements are squares), is an EDR, thus solving or partially solving problems raised by Lorenzini. Many other classes of rings are introduced and studied. To ease the reading, this version concentrates only on extendability properties of unimodular 2 x 2 matrices and hence does not consider the case n > 2.

Abstract:For an n × n matrix algebra over a totally ordered integral domain, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived such that the entrywise lattice order on it is the only lattice order (up to an isomorphism) to make it into a lattice-ordered algebra in which the identity matrix is positive. The conditions are then applied to particular integral domains. In the second part of the paper we consider n × n matrix rings containing a positive n -cycle over totally ordered rings. Finally a characterization of lattice-ordered matrix ring with the entrywise lattice order is given.

Abstract:We reobtain and often refine prior criteria due to Kaplansky, McGovern, Roitman, Shchedryk, Wiegand, and Zabavsky--Bilavska and obtain new criteria for a Hermite ring to be an \textsl{EDR}. We mention three criteria: (1) a Hermite ring $R$ is an \textsl{EDR} iff for all pairs $(a,c)\in R^2$, the product homomorphism $U(R/Rac)\times U\bigl(R/Rc(1-a)\bigr)\to U(R/Rc)$ between groups of units is surjective; (2) a reduced Hermite ring is an \textsl{EDR} iff it is a pre-Schreier ring and for each $a\in R$, every zero determinant unimodular $2\times 2$ matrix with entries in $R/Ra$ lifts to a zero determinant matrix with entries in $R$; (3) a Bézout domain $R$ is an \textsl{EDD} iff for all triples $(a,b,c)\in R^3$ there exists a unimodular pair $(e,f)\in R^2$ such that $(a,e)$ and $(be+af,1-a-bc)$ are unimodular pairs. We use these criteria to show that each Bézout ring $R$ that is an $(SU)_2$ ring (as introduced by Lorenzini) such that for each nonzero $a\in R$ there exists no nontrivial self-dual projective $R/Ra$-module of rank $1$ generated by $2$ elements (e.g., all its elements are squares), is an \textsl{EDR}.

Formalizing Factorization on Euclidean Domains and Abstract Euclidean Algorithms

Abstract:This paper discusses the extension of the Prototype Verification System (PVS) sub-theory for rings, part of the PVS algebra theory, with theorems related to the division algorithm for Euclidean rings and Unique Factorization Domains that are general structures where an analog of the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic holds. First, we formalize the general abstract notions of divisibility, prime, and irreducible elements in commutative rings, essential to deal with unique factorization domains. Then, we formalize the landmark theorem, establishing that every principal ideal domain is a unique factorization domain. Finally, we specify the theory of Euclidean domains and formally verify that the rings of integers, the Gaussian integers, and arbitrary fields are Euclidean domains. To highlight the benefits of such a general abstract discipline of formalization, we specify a Euclidean gcd algorithm for Euclidean domains and formalize its correctness. Also, we show how this correctness is inherited under adequate parameterizations for the structures of integers and Gaussian integers.
