Abstract:The classical Morita Theorem for rings established the equivalence of three statements, involving categorical equivalences, isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, and bimodule homomorphisms. A fourth equivalent statement (established later) involves an isomorphism between infinite matrix rings. In our main result, we establish the equivalence of analogous statements involving graded categorical equivalences, graded isomorphisms between corners of finite matrix rings, graded bimodule homomorphisms, and graded isomorphisms between infinite matrix rings.

Abstract:The model-theoretic Grothendieck ring of a first order structure, as defined by Krajicěk and Scanlon, captures some combinatorial properties of the definable subsets of finite powers of the structure. In this paper we compute the Grothendieck ring, K0(MR), of a right R-module M, where R is any unital ring. As a corollary we prove a conjecture of Prest that K0(MR) is non-trivial, whenever M is non-zero. The main proof uses various techniques from simplicial homology and lattice theory to construct certain counting functions.

Enhanced Auslander-Reiten duality and Morita theorem for singularity categories

Abstract:We establish a Morita theorem to construct triangle equivalences between the singularity categories of (commutative and non-commutative) Gorenstein rings and the cluster categories of finite dimensional algebras over fields, and more strongly, quasi-equivalences between their canonical dg enhancements. More precisely, we prove that such an equivalence exists as soon as we find a quasi-equivalence between the graded dg singularity category of a Gorenstein ring and the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which can be done by finding a single tilting object. Our result is based on two key theorems on dg enhancements of cluster categories and of singularity categories, which are of independent interest. First we give a Morita-type theorem which realizes certain $\mathbb{Z}$-graded dg categories as dg orbit categories. Secondly, we show that the canonical dg enhancements of the singularity categories of symmetric orders have the bimodule Calabi-Yau property, which lifts the classical Auslander-Reiten duality on singularity categories. We apply our results to such classes of rings as Gorenstein rings of dimension at most $1$, quotient singularities, and Geigle-Lenzing complete intersections, including finite or infinite Grassmannian cluster categories, to realize their singularity categories as cluster categories of finite dimensional algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if Cohen-Macaulay local/graded rings $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$ satisfy certain conditions regarding multiplicity and Cohen-Macaulay type, then almost Gorenstein property of $R$ implies Gorenstein properties for all of $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$. We apply our theorem to tensor products of semi-standard graded rings and some classes of affine semigroup rings, i.e., numerical semigroup rings, edge rings and stable set rings.

Abstract:We prove that within a natural class of E_3-algebras, the graded Tor group induced by a span of E_3-algebra maps carries a functorial commutative graded algebra structure generalizing the classical structure when the algebras are genuine commutative differential graded algebras. As a topological corollary, Munkholm's Eilenberg--Moore collapse result for pullbacks of spaces with polynomial cohomology is enhanced to a ring isomorphism. New applications compute the Borel cohomology rings of homogeneous spaces and singular cohomology rings of biquotients with minimal restrictions on coefficient rings; existing results on the singular cohomology rings of free loop spaces and (generalized) homogeneous spaces are respectively recovered and strengthened.

$K$-rings of wonderful varieties and matroids

Abstract:We study the $K$-ring of the wonderful variety of a hyperplane arrangement and give a combinatorial presentation that depends only on the underlying matroid. We use this combinatorial presentation to define the $K$-ring of an arbitrary loopless matroid. We construct an exceptional isomorphism, with integer coefficients, to the Chow ring of the matroid that satisfies a Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch-type formula, generalizing a recent construction of Berget, Eur, Spink, and Tseng for the permutohedral variety (the wonderful variety of a Boolean arrangement). As an application, we give combinatorial formulas for Euler characteristics of arbitrary line bundles on wonderful varieties. We give analogous constructions and results for augmented wonderful varieties, and for Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen moduli spaces of stable rational curves with marked points.

Duality and the equations of Rees rings and tangent algebras

Abstract:Let $E$ be a module of projective dimension one over a Noetherian ring $R$ and consider its Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$. We study this ring as a quotient of the symmetric algebra $\mathcal{S}(E)$ and consider the ideal $\mathcal{A}$ defining this quotient. In the case that $\mathcal{S}(E)$ is a complete intersection ring, we employ a duality between $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{S}(E)$ in order to study the Rees ring $\mathcal{R}(E)$ in multiple settings. In particular, when $R$ is a complete intersection ring defined by quadrics, we consider its module of Kähler differentials $\Omega_{R/k}$ and its associated tangent algebras.

Abstract:The goal of this work is twofold: (i) to provide a detailed analysis of some categories of inductive graded ring - a concept introduced in [DM98] in order to provide a solution of Marshall's signature conjecture in the algebraic theory of quadratic forms; (ii) apply this analysis to deepen the connections between the category of special hyperfields ([dARM22]) - equivalent to the category of special groups ([DM00]) and the categories of inductive graded rings.

Subrings of polynomial rings and the conjectures of Eisenbud and Evans

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring of dimension $d$. In 1973, Eisenbud and Evans proposed three conjectures on the polynomial ring $R[T]$. These conjectures were settled in the affirmative by Sathaye, Mohan Kumar and Plumstead. One of the primary objectives of this article is to investigate the validity of these conjectures over Noetherian subrings of $R[T]$ of dimension $d+1$, containing $R$. We formulate a class of such rings, which includes polynomial rings, Rees algebras, Rees-like algebras and Noetherian symbolic Rees algebras, and exhibit that all three conjectures hold for rings belonging to this class.

The Habiro ring of a number field

Abstract:We introduce the Habiro ring of a number field $\mathbb{K}$ and modules over it graded by $K_3(\mathbb{K})$. Elements of these modules are collections of power series at each complex root of unity that arithmetically glue with each other after applying a Frobenius endomorphism, and after dividing at each prime by a collection of series that depends solely on an element of the Bloch group. We prove that the perturbative Chern-Simons invariants of knots and 3-manifolds are elements of these modules and identify these elements with expansions of certain admissible series of Kontsevich-Soibelman at roots of unity, suggesting that some Donaldson-Thomas invariants have arithmetic meaning and that some elements of the Habiro ring of a number field have enumerative meaning.

Macaulay Posets and Rings

Abstract:Macaulay posets are posets in which an analog of the Kruskal-Katona Theorem holds. Macaulay rings (also called Macaulay-Lex rings) are rings in which an analog of Macaulay's Theorem for lex ideals holds. The study of both of these objects started with Macaulay almost a century ago. Since then, these two branches have developed separately over the past century, with the last link being the Clements-Lindström Theorem. For every ring that is the quotient of a polynomial ring by a homogeneous ideal we define the poset of monomials. Under certain conditions, we prove a Macaulay Correspondence Theorem, a ring is Macaulay if and only if its poset of monomials is Macaulay. Furthermore, the tensor product of rings corresponds to the Cartesian product of the posets of monomials. This allows us to transfer results between rings and posets. By using this translation, we give several answers to a problem posed by Mermin and Peeva, a positive answer to Hoefel's question about applying Macaulay poset theory to ring theory, and deduce several other results in algebra and combinatorics. A new proof of the Mermin-Murai Theorem on colored square free rings is presented by using star posets. We extend the Mermin-Murai Theorem to rings that are not square free. Using a result from Mermin and Peeva we give an answer to a question posed by Bezrukov and Leck. Some results of Chong also give answers to the Bezrukov-Leck problem. All of these results have a common feature. They involve the tensor product of rings whose Hasse graphs of the poset of monomials are trees. We call such rings, tree rings. We give a classification of Macaulay rings that are the tensor product of a tree ring. Finally, we show that there are Macaulay rings that are not the tensor product of tree rings, and present the first examples of Macaulay rings that are not quotients by a monomial ideal and not quotients by a toric ideal.

Abstract:This is the second companion paper of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.03586" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.03586">arXiv:1601.03586</a>. We consider the morphism from the variety of triples introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.03586" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.03586">arXiv:1601.03586</a> to the affine Grassmannian. The direct image of the dualizing complex is a ring object in the equivariant derived category on the affine Grassmannian (equivariant derived Satake category). We show that various constructions in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.03586" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.03586">arXiv:1601.03586</a> work for an arbitrary commutative ring object. The second purpose of this paper is to study Coulomb branches associated with star shaped quivers, which are expected to be conjectural Higgs branches of $3d$ Sicilian theories in type $A$ by <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1007.0992" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1007.0992">arXiv:1007.0992</a>.

Some characterizations of Gorenstein Rees Algebras

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to elucidate the relationship between the Gorenstein Rees algebra $\R(I):=\bigoplus_{i\ge 0}I^i$ of an ideal $I$ in a complete Noetherian local ring $A$ and the graded canonical module of the extended Rees algebra $\R'(I):=\bigoplus_{i\in\Z}I^i$. It is known that the Gorensteinness of $\R(I)$ is closely related to the property of the graded canonical module of the associated graded ring $\G(I):=\bigoplus_{i\ge 0}I^i/I^{i+1}$. However, there appears to be a shortage of satisfactory references analyzing the relationship between $\R(I)$ and $\R'(I)$ unless the ring $\G(I)$ is Cohen-Macaulay. This paper provides a characterization of the Gorenstein property of $\R(I)$ using the graded canonical module of $\R'(I)$ without assuming that the base ring $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Applying our criterion, we demonstrate that a certain Kawasaki's arithmetic Cohen-Macaulayfication becomes a Gorenstein ring when $A$ is a quasi-Gorenstein local ring with finite local cohomology.

Abstract:Let τ be a finite type hereditary torsion theory on the category of all modules over a commutative ring. The purpose of this paper is to give two applications of Nagata rings and modules in the sense of Jara [Nagata rings, Front. Math. China 10 (2015) 91–110]. First they are used to obtain Chase's Theorem for τ -coherent rings. In particular, we obtain the w -version of Chase's Theorem, where w is the classical star operation in ideal theory. In the second half, we apply they to characterize τ -flatness in the sense of Van Oystaeyen and Verschoren [ Relative Invariants of Rings-The Commutative Theory , Monographs and Textbooks in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Vol. 79 (Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York, 1983)].

Abstract:Let I be an m-primary ideal of a Noetherian local ring (R,m). We consider the Gorenstein and complete intersection properties of the associated graded ring G(I) and the fiber cone F(I) of I as reflected in their defining ideals as homomorphic images of polynomial rings over R/I and R/m respectively. In case all the higher conormal modules of I are free over R/I, we observe that: (i) G(I) is Cohen-Macaulay iff F(I) is Cohen- Macaulay, (ii) G(I) is Gorenstein iff both F(I) and R/I are Gorenstein, and (iii) G(I) is a relative complete intersection iff F(I) is a relative complete intersection. In case R/I is Gorenstein, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for G(I) to be Gorenstein in terms of residuation of powers of I with respect to a reduction J of I with \mu(J) = dim R and the reduction number r of I with respect to J. We prove that G(I) is Gorenstein iff J:I^{r-i} = J + I^{i+1}, for i = 0, ...,r-1. If (R,m) is a Gorenstein local ring and I \subseteq m is an ideal having a reduction J with reduction number r such that \mu(J) = ht(I) = g > 0, we prove that the extended Rees algebra R[It, t^-1}] is quasi-Gorenstein with \a-invariant a if and only if J^n:I^r = I^{n+a-r+g-1} for every integer n.

Abstract:The study of rings and modules with homological criteria is a cornerstone of commutative algebra. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. In this paper, a relative analogue of the theory of homological rings and modules is developed. We introduce the notions of $\frak a$-relative regular, $\frak a$-relative complete intersection, and $\frak a$-relative Gorenstein rings and modules. We extend some classical results by demonstrating some interactions between these types of rings and modules.

Associativity and Commutativity of Partially Ordered Rings

Abstract:Consider a commutative monoid $(M,+,0)$ and a biadditive binary operation $\mu \colon M \times M \to M$. We will show that under some additional general assumptions, the operation $\mu$ is automatically both associative and commutative. The main additional assumption is localizability of $\mu$, which essentially means that a certain canonical order on $M$ is compatible with adjoining some multiplicative inverses of elements of $M$. As an application we show that a division ring $\mathbb F$ is commutative provided that for all $a \in \mathbb F$ there exists a natural number $k$ such that $a-k$ is not a sum of products of squares. This generalizes the classical theorem that every archimedean ordered division ring is commutative to a more general class of formally real division rings that do not necessarily allow for an archimedean (total) order. Similar results about automatic associativity and commutativity are well-known for special types of partially ordered extended rings (``extended'' in the sense that neither associativity nor commutativity of the multiplication is required by definition), namely in the uniformly bounded and the lattice-ordered cases, i.e.~for (extended) $f$-rings. In these cases the commutative monoid in question is the positive cone of the partially ordered extended ring. We also discuss how these classical results can be obtained from our main theorem.
