Abstract:This research investigates the impact of altering the number of weld passes on the distribution of residual stresses in multipass high-strength low-alloy steel butt-welds with equal double-V type groove geometry. Employing a comprehensive approach, two welded joints featuring double-V type groove geometries were meticulously prepared using the shielded metal arc welding process, one with 14 weld passes and the other with 18 passes in a 20-mm-thick plate. The study investigates the residual stresses present in both the weld zone and the heat-affected zone (HAZ), employing a combination of computational modeling and experimental results. The longitudinal stresses in the HAZ were roughly 55% lower for the 18-pass weld compared to the 14-pass weld. On the contrary, the 18-pass weld had transverse stresses that were higher than the 14-pass weld, at 250 MPa as compared to 100 MPa. Additionally, the impact of constrained conditions on the residual stress patterns of equal double-V type groove welds is examined, employing computational models with varying weld pass sequences. Computational results indicate that under restrained conditions, longitudinal stresses can increase to around 400 MPa. However, transverse stresses show a reduction in compressive stress along the weld center. A critical feasibility assessment is also conducted concerning the implementation of restrained conditions on the distribution of weld-induced residual stresses in thick multipass butt-welded joints. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of using an equal double-V type groove joint with fewer weld passes to minimize transverse residual stresses, whereas longitudinal stress distributions are mostly unaffected. This research provides valuable insights into optimizing weld pass sequences to manage residual stresses effectively, thus offering significant implications for enhancing the structural integrity and performance of welded structures.
