Abstract:We compare several definitions of the density of a self-bound system, such as a nucleus, in relation with its center-of-mass zero-point motion. A trivial deconvolution relates the internal density to the density defined in the laboratory frame. This result is useful for the practical definition of density functionals.

Abstract:In electron density functional theory formal properties of density functionals play an important role in constructing and testing approximate functionals. In this paper it is shown that a set of density functionals satisfy an equation that links functionals of densities of N and N-1 systems of the same Hamiltonian. In particular the identity is satisfied by the sum of the Hartree and exchange-correlation energies.
A convolution formalism for defining spatial densities of hadrons

Abstract:We clarify the meaning of spatial densities of hadrons. A physical density is given by the expectation value of a local operator for a physical state, and depends on both internal structure and the hadron's wave packet. In some particular cases, the physical density can be written as a convolution between a density function that depends on internal structure but not wave packet, and a smearing function that depends on wave packet but not internal structure. We show that the light front densities often encountered in the literature have this property but that instant form densities do not. For hadrons prepared in broad wave packets, physical instant form densities approximately obey such a convolution relation, with Breit frame densities as the apparent internal densities. However, there is an infinite series of relativistic corrections to this convolution formula.

Abstract:We generalize the recently developped "internal" Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Kohn-Sham scheme to multicomponent systems. We obtain a general formalism, applicable for the description of multicomponent self-bound systems (as molecules where the nuclei are treated explicitely, atomic nuclei and mix of 3He and 4He droplets), where the fundamental translational symmetry has been treated correctly. The main difference with traditional DFT is the explicit inclusion of center-of-mass correlations in the functional. A large part of the paper is dedicated to the application to molecules, which permits among other to clarify the approximations that underly traditional DFT.
Classical Density Functional Theory in the Canonical Ensemble

Abstract:Classical density functional theory for finite temperatures is usually formulated in the grand-canonical ensemble where arbitrary variations of the local density are possible. However, in many cases the systems of interest are closed with respect to mass, e.g. canonical systems with fixed temperature and particle number. Although the tools of standard, grand-canonical density functional theory are often used in an ad hoc manner to study closed systems, their formulation directly in the canonical ensemble has so far not been known. In this work, the fundamental theorems underlying classical DFT are revisited and carefully compared in the two ensembles showing that there are only trivial formal differences. The practicality of DFT in the canonical ensemble is then illustrated by deriving the exact Helmholtz functional for several systems: the ideal gas, certain restricted geometries in arbitrary numbers of dimensions and finally a system of two hard-spheres in one dimension (hard rods) in a small cavity. Some remarkable similarities between the ensembles are apparent even for small systems with the latter showing strong echoes of the famous exact of result of Percus in the grand-canonical ensemble.

Gedanken Densities and Exact Constraints in Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Approximations to the exact density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of a many-electron ground state can be constructed by satisfying constraints that are universal, i.e., valid for all electron densities. Gedanken densities are designed for the purpose of this construction, but need not be realistic. The uniform electron gas is an old gedanken density. Here, we propose a spherical two-electron gedanken density in which the dimensionless density gradient can be an arbitrary positive constant wherever the density is non-zero. The Lieb-Oxford lower bound on the exchange energy can be satisfied within a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) by bounding its enhancement factor or simplest GGA exchange-energy density. This enhancement-factor bound is well known to be sufficient, but our gedanken density shows that it is also necessary. The conventional exact exchange-energy density satisfies no such local bound, but energy densities are not unique, and the simplest GGA exchange-energy density is not an approximation to it. We further derive a strongly and optimally tightened bound on the exchange enhancement factor of a two-electron density, which is satisfied by the local density approximation but is violated by all published GGA's or meta-GGA's. Finally, some consequences of the non-uniform density-scaling behavior for the asymptotics of the exchange enhancement factor of a GGA or meta-GGA are given.

Finite Temperature Scaling, Bounds, and Inequalities for the Non-interacting Density Functionals

Abstract:Finite temperature density functional theory requires representations for the internal energy, entropy, and free energy as functionals of the local density field. A central formal difficulty for an orbital-free representation is construction of the corresponding functionals for non-interacting particles in an arbitrary external potential. That problem is posed here in the context of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of an inhomogeneous system. The density functionals are defined and shown to be equal to the extremal state for a functional of the reduced one-particle statistical operators. Convexity of the latter functionals implies a class of general inequalities. First, it is shown that the familiar von Weizsäcker lower bound for zero temperature functionals applies at finite temperature as well. An upper bound is obtained in terms of a single-particle statistical operator corresponding to the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Next, the behavior of the density functionals under coordinate scaling is obtained. The inequalities are exploited to obtain a class of upper and lower bounds at constant temperature, and a complementary class at constant density. The utility of such constraints and their relationship to corresponding results at zero temperature are discussed.

Abstract:The density functional theory is one of the most efficient and promising methods of quantum physics and chemistry. It is a theory of electronic structure formulated in terms of the electron density as the basic unknown function instead of the electron wave function. According to the fundamental theorems of Hohenberg and Kohn, the electron density carries all the information one might need to determine any property of the electron system. However, the way of obtaining it, is not at all trivial. In this report, the recent advances are summarized. After a review of the Hohenberg–Kohn theorems, the method of constrained search and the Kohn–Sham scheme, exact theorems, relations and inequalities are discussed. There are several important concepts of chemistry (e.g. electronegativity, hardness, softness) that have recently obtained a firm foundation in the density functional theory. The optimized potential method and the methods that generate the potential from the electron density are reviewed. The local and nonlocal approximate functionals are compared. Extensions of the ground-state density functional theory (excited states, time-dependent, relativistic and finite temperature) are summarized. A review of the applications to atoms and molecules is presented.
Energy densities in the strong-interaction limit of density functional theory

Abstract:We discuss energy densities in the strong-interaction limit of density functional theory, deriving an exact expression within the definition (gauge) of the electrostatic potential of the exchange-correlation hole. Exact results for small atoms and small model quantum dots are compared with available approximations defined in the same gauge. The idea of a local interpolation along the adiabatic connection is discussed, comparing the energy densities of the Kohn-Sham, the physical, and the strong-interacting systems. We also use our results to analyze the local version of the Lieb-Oxford bound, widely used in the construction of approximate exchange-correlation functionals.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. We prove that the lowest free energy of a classical interacting system at temperature [math] with a prescribed density profile [math] can be approximated by the local free energy [math], provided that [math] varies slowly over sufficiently large length scales. A quantitative error on the difference is provided in terms of the gradient of the density. Here [math] is the free energy per unit volume of an infinite homogeneous gas of the corresponding uniform density. The proof uses quantitative Ruelle bounds (estimates on the local number of particles in a large system), which are derived in an appendix.

Abstract:The present contribution does not aim at replacing the huge and often excellent literature on DFT for atomic nuclei, but tries to provide an updated introduction to this topic. The goal would be, ideally, to help a fresh <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://M.Sc" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. or Ph.D. student (or a researcher from other fields) to become acquainted with some basic concepts, and then move to the specialized textbooks or papers with some ability for orienteering. We first introduce the basics of DFT, and show the difference with the "naive" mean-field theory, that is doomed to fail as a model even in the simple case of uniform nuclear matter. We introduce the Energy Density Functionals (EDFs) that are used in nuclear structure, with few examples of their applications. The concepts of symmetry breaking and restoration are briefly discussed. We also include an introduction to the time-dependent extension of DFT that, so far, has been implemented essentially only in the adiabatic approximation and has been applied mainly to the study of nuclear vibrations. With this material, we hope that any reader is able to deal with the texts that go deeper into each of the topics, having understood that DFT is probably the best compromise in nuclear structure theory between simplicity, accuracy, and broad range of applicability.

Nuclear kinetic density from ab initio theory

Abstract:Background: The nuclear kinetic density is one of many fundamental quantities in density functional theory (DFT) dependent on the nonlocal nuclear density. Often, approximations may be made when computing the density that may result in spurious contributions in other DFT quantities. With the ability to compute the nonlocal nuclear density from ab initio wave functions, it is now possible to estimate effects of such spurious contributions. Purpose: We derive the kinetic density using ab initio nonlocal scalar one-body nuclear densities computed within the no-core shell model (NCSM) approach, utilizing two- and three-nucleon chiral interactions as the sole input. With the ability to compute translationally invariant nonlocal densities, it is possible to directly gauge the impact of the spurious center-of-mass (COM) contributions in DFT quantities such as the kinetic density. Methods: The nonlocal nuclear densities are derived from the NCSM one-body densities calculated in second quantization. We present a review of COM contaminated and translationally invariant nuclear densities. We then derive an analytic expression for the kinetic density using these nonlocal densities, producing an ab initio kinetic density. Results: The ground state nonlocal densities of \textsuperscript{4,6,8}He, \textsuperscript{12}C, and \textsuperscript{16}O are used to compute the kinetic densities of the aforementioned nuclei. The impact of the COM removal technique in the densities is discussed. The results of this work can be extended to other fundamental quantities in DFT. Conclusions: The use of a general nonlocal density allows for the calculation of fundamental quantities taken as input in theories such as DFT. This allows benchmarking of procedures for COM removal in different many-body techniques.

Abstract:A method based on first-order density matrices is proposed to define an atom in a molecule, which is in accord with a previously given definition using density functional theory. The promotion energy Ep is expressed in terms of a defined division function α(r). By minimizing Ep with respect to α(r), one can obtain α(r), by which an atom in a molecule is uniquely determined. It is shown that such an ‘‘atom’’ satisfies a local virial theorem, depicted intuitively, Some other properties of the atom in a molecule are also discussed. Comparison is made with a definition due to Bader, and an approximate but simple approach to determine an atom in a molecule is proposed.

Abstract:Density Functional Theory (DFT) is one of the most widely used methods for "ab initio" calculations of the structure of atoms, molecules, crystals, surfaces, and their interactions. Unfortunately, the customary introduction to DFT is often considered too lengthy to be included in various curricula. An alternative introduction to DFT is presented here, drawing on ideas which are well-known from thermodynamics, especially the idea of switching between different independent variables. The central theme of DFT, i.e. the notion that it is possible and beneficial to replace the dependence on the external potential v(r) by a dependence on the density distribution n(r), is presented as a straightforward generalization of the familiar Legendre transform from the chemical potential (\mu) to the number of particles (N). This approach is used here to introduce the Hohenberg-Kohn energy functional and to obtain the corresponding theorems, using classical nonuniform fluids as simple examples. The energy functional for electronic systems is considered next, and the Kohn-Sham equations are derived. The exchange-correlation part of this functional is discussed, including both the local density approximation to it, and its formally exact expression in terms of the exchange-correlation hole. A very brief survey of various applications and extensions is included.

Abstract:The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem of the density functional theory is extended by modifying the Levy constrained-search formulation. The new theorem allows us to choose arbitrary physical quantities as the basic variables which determine the ground-state properties of the system. Moreover, the theorem establishes a minimum principle with respect to variations in the chosen basic variables as well as with respect to variations in the density. By using this theorem, the self-consistent single-particle equations are derived. N single-particle orbitals introduced reproduce the basic variables. The validity of the theory is confirmed by the examples where the spin-density or paramagnetic current-density is chosen as one of the basic variables. The resulting single-particle equations coincide with the Kohn-Sham equations of the spin-density functional theory (SDFT) or current-density functional theory (CDFT), respectively. By choosing basic variables appropriate to the system, the present theory can describe the ground-state properties more efficiently than the conventional DFT.

Crucial Test for Covariant Density Functional Theory with New and Accurate Mass Measurements from Sn to Pa

Abstract:The covariant density functional theory with the point-coupling interaction PC-PK1 is compared with new and accurate experimental masses in the element range from 50 to 91. The experimental data are from a mass measurement performed with the storage ring mass spectrometry at GSI [Chen et al., Nucl. Phys. A 882, 71 (2012)]. Although the microscopic theory contains only 11 parameters, it agrees well with the experimental data. The comparison is characterized by a rms deviation of 0.859 MeV. For even-even nuclei, the theory agrees within about 600 keV. Larger deviations are observed in this comparison for the odd-A and odd-odd nuclei. Improvements and possible reasons for the deviations are discussed in this contribution as well.

Abstract:A model is developed, based on the density functional perturbation theory and the inverse Kohn-Sham method, that can be used to improve relativistic nuclear energy density functionals towards an exact but unknown Kohn-Sham Hartree-exchange-correlation functional. The improved functional is determined by empirical exact ground-state densities of finite systems. The Convexity Condition of Density-Functional Theory

Abstract:It has long been postulated that within density-functional theory (DFT) the total energy of a finite electronic system is convex with respect to electron count, so that 2 E_v[N_0] <= E_v[N_0 - 1] + E_v[N_0 + 1]. Using the infinite-separation-limit technique, this article proves the convexity condition for any formulation of DFT that is (1) exact for all v-representable densities, (2) size-consistent, and (3) translationally invariant. An analogous result is also proven for one-body reduced density matrix functional theory. While there are known DFT formulations in which the ground state is not always accessible, indicating that convexity does not hold in such cases, this proof nonetheless confirms a stringent constraint on the exact exchange-correlation functional. We also provide sufficient conditions for convexity in approximate DFT, which could aid in the development of density-functional approximations. This result lifts a standing assumption in the proof of the piecewise linearity condition with respect to electron count, which has proven central to understanding the Kohn-Sham band-gap and the exchange-correlation derivative discontinuity of DFT.
