Abstract:Using elemental sulfur and elemental lithium as cathode and anode, respectively, the lithiumsulfur (Li-S) battery represents the simplest battery chemistry for rechargeable batteries. In spite of the high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh/kg, Li-S batteries suffer from poor cyclability. There are three key limitations for cycling Li-S batteries that must be overcome: (1) Sulfur is an electronic insulator. Its poor electronic conductivity leads to low utilization of active material in the electrode. This problem can be overcome by using high surface area carbon in the cathode. (2) The charge and discharge products of sulfur are poor ionic conductors. In order to make the sulfur cathode rechargeable, a liquid electrolyte that has a high solubility of polysulfides is required to overcome the poor ionic conductivities of solid sulfur species. As a result of the dissolution polysulfides in the liquid electrolyte, the diffusion of polysulfides from the cathode to the anode during the battery cycling leads to the corrosion of lithium anode and the loss of active sulfur materials. (3)The dendritic growth of lithium metal in liquid electrolytes and the ever growing of solid electrolyte interphase on the anode surface shorten the cycle-life of Li-S batteries and also cause safety concerns. Therefore, the poor cyclability of Li-S batteries is an intrinsic problem associated with the use of liquid electrolyte in the battery configuration.

Abstract:The practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is seriously hindered by severe lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and sluggish electrochemical conversions. Herein, the Co9S8/MoS2 heterojunction as a model cathode host material is employed to discuss the performance improvement strategy and elucidate the catalytic mechanism. The introduction of sulfur vacancies can harmonize the chemisorption of the heterojunction component. Also, sulfur vacancies induce the generation of radicals, which participate in a liquidus disproportionated reaction to reduce the accumulation of liquid LiPSs. To assess the conversion efficiency from liquid LiPSs to solid Li2S, a new descriptor calculated from basic cyclic voltammetry curves, nucleation transformation ratio, is proposed.
Selective Adsorption and Electrocatalysis of Polysulfides Through Hexatomic Nickel Clusters Embedded in N-Doped Graphene Toward High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Abstract:The shuttle effect hinders the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to the poor affinity between a substrate and Li polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish transition of soluble LiPSs to insoluble Li 2 S or elemental S. Here, we report that Ni hexatomic clusters embedded in a nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) graphene framework (Ni-N/G) possess stronger interaction with soluble polysulfides than that with insoluble polysulfides. The synthetic electrocatalyst deployed in the sulfur cathode plays a multifunctional role: (i) selectively adsorbing the polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte, (ii) expediting the sluggish liquid-solid phase transformations at the active sites as electrocatalysts, and (iii) accelerating the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction of multielectron sulfur, thereby inhibiting the dissolution of LiPSs. The constructed S@Ni-N/G cathode delivers an areal capacity of 9.43 mAh cm -2 at 0.1 C at S loading of 6.8 mg cm -2 , and it exhibits a gravimetric capacity of 1104 mAh g -1 with a capacity fading rate of 0.045% per cycle over 50 cycles at 0.2 C at S loading of 2.0 mg cm -2 . This work opens a rational approach to achieve the selective adsorption and expediting of polysulfide transition for the performance enhancement of Li-S batteries.
Suppress Loss of Polysulfides in Lithium-Sulfur Battery by Regulating the Rate-Determining Step Via 1T MoS2-MnO2 Covering Layer.

Abstract:The commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is obstructed by several technical challenges, the most severe of which is the irreversible loss of soluble polysulfide intermediates. These soluble polysulfides must be anchored or confined in the cathode side to maintain the long life of the LSBs. Here, 1T MoS2-MnO2/CC heterostructure functional covering layer is designed to regulate the rate-determining step from the liquid-to-solid reaction to solid-to-solid reaction. Rapid and uniform nucleation of solid Li2S2/Li2S is therefore achieved, and the loss of soluble polysulfides is retarded. The Li-S batteries assembled with 1T MoS2-MnO2/CC covering layer therefore deliver outstanding rate capabilities even under high sulfur loads and large current rates. This study paves a novel way to suppress the polysulfides' "farewell effect" from the perspective of the kinetics.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most important energy storage devices of the future and pave the way for a greener society. In this context, the demand for batteries with high energy density is increasing significantly and is reaching the limits of the technology currently in use. Therefore, intensive research is being conducted to utilize a new class of materials for energy storage. The most promising alternatives to today's nickel-based cathode and graphite anode materials are silicon and sulfur. Both silicon and sulfur are abundant and cheap and possess extremely high theoretical specific capacities of 4200 mAh/gSi and 1675 mAh/gS, respectively. One of the biggest challenges with sulfur-based batteries is the polysulfide shuttle effect, which occurs with sulfur cathodes, leading to an insulating passivation layer, especially on the commonly used lithium metal anodes. Therefore, to replace lithium metal anodes with silicon, it is of major importance to understand the reactivity of polysulfides with silicon. To investigate the effect of lithium polysulfides on the performance of the anodes in the critical formation cycles, mesoporous silicon anodes were galvanostatically cycled in electrolytes containing different concentrations of polysulfides. In this process, the anodes were analyzed after one, five and ten cycles by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy to determine the composition of the SEI. Higher concentrations of polysulfides in the electrolyte result in more inorganic, oxide-containing species in the SEI. Silicon anodes with lower amounts of surface oxide show little or negative effect on the performance in the presence of polysulfides, while anodes with large amounts of surface oxide show higher impedance during cycling, an effect that is enhanced with increasing polysulfide content.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur batteries have the potential to replace lithium‐ion batteries in the future due to their high theoretical capacity and energy density but suffer from low cycling stability caused by the polysulfide shuttle. This work demonstrates a reduction of the polysulfide shuttle and increased cycling stability by using iron oxide and chromium oxide as additives for a simply fabricated lithium sulfide cathode. Adsorption isotherms were recorded, and monolayer adsorption capacities were determined for a better understanding of the interactions between transition metal oxides and polysulfides. A significant reduction of the shuttle mechanism can be deduced from the cyclization experiments. Similarly, the catalytic influence of chromium oxide and iron oxide on the oxidation could be shown by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:Intermediate polysulfides (S-n, where n = 2-8) play a critical role in both mechanistic understanding and performance improvement of lithium-sulfur batteries. The rational management of polysulfides is of profound significance for high-efficiency sulfur electrochemistry. Here, the key roles of polysulfides are discussed, with regard to their status, behavior, and their correspondingimpact on the lithium-sulfur system. Two schools of thoughts for polysulfide management are proposed, their advantages and disadvantages are compared, and future developments are discussed.

In order to understand the interfacial reactions occuring on the electrode surfaces, we employ a convenient electrochemical strategy to regulate the nucleation and precipitation of polysulfides on the electrode surface. The accumulation of detrimental Li2S on cathode is largely alleviated thus enabling very stable cycling of Li-S batteries. For example, more than 760 stable cycling are demonstrated with a reversible capacity of 500 mAh g−1. More importantly, the exposure of new lithium metal surface to the S-containing electrolyte is also greatly reduced through this strategy, largely minimizing the anode corrosion caused by polysulfides. The fundamental findings of this work provide valuable information on the electrochemical redistribution process of sulfur, which is unavoidable, during cycling and the corresponding anode evolutions under different testing conditions.

Abstract:AbstractThe two major issues confronting the commercialization of rechargeable lithium‐sulfur (Li−S) batteries are the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur electrochemical reactions on the cathode and inadequate lithium deposition/stripping reversibility on the anode. They are commonly mitigated with additives designed specifically for the anode and the cathode individually. Here, we report the use of a single cathode modifier, In2Se3, which can effectively catalyse the polysulfide reactions on the cathode, and also improve the reversibility of Li deposition and removal on the anode through a LiInS2/LiInSe2 containing solid electrolyte interface formed in situ by the Se and In ions dissolved in the electrolyte. The amounts of dissolved Se and In are small relative to the amount of In2Se3 administered. The benefits of using this single modification approach were verified in Li‐metal anode‐free Li−S batteries with a Li2S loading of 4 mg cm−2 and a low electrolyte/Li2S ratio of 7.5 μL mg−1. The resulting battery showed 60 % capacity retention after 160 cycles at the 0.2 C rate and an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.27 %, comparing very well with recent studies using separate electrode modifiers.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are considered a very attractive alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity and the low cost of the active materials. However, the realization of LSBs remains hostage to many challenges associated with the cathode and anode response to the electrochemical conditions inside the battery cell. While working with LSBs, elemental sulfur undergoes multielectron reduction reactions until it is reduced to Li2S. The intermediate long chain lithium-polysulfide (LiPS) species are soluble, and hence diffuse through the electrolyte solution from the cathode side to the anode. This "shuttle" phenomenon is considered to be one of the main issues of LSB. Most effort in investigating LSBs has focused on the cathode side while few have considered the importance of the lithium anode reversibility and the separator role in preventing the "shuttle" phenomenon. In the current work, we use atomic layer deposition to successfully coat a standard polypropylene separator with an additional layer of metal oxides thin film. We show that surface treatment of the separator facilitated improved electrochemical response, and suppressed the shuttling of LiPS to the anode

Abstract:The cathodic reactions in Li-S batteries can be divided into two steps. Firstly, elemental sulfur is transformed into long-chain polysulfides (S8 ↔ Li2S4), which are highly soluble in the electrolyte. Next, long-chain polysulfides undergo nucleation reaction and convert into solid-state Li2S2 and Li2S (Li2S4 ↔ Li2S) by slow processes. As a result, the second-step of the electrochemical reaction hinders the high-rate application of Li-S batteries. In this report, the kinetics of the sulfur/long-chain-polysulfide redox couple (theoretical capacity=419 mA h g(-1)) are experimentally demonstrated to be very fast in the Li-S system. A Li-S cell with a blended carbon interlayer retains excellent cycle stability and possesses a high percentage of active material utilization over 250 cycles at high C rates. The meso-/micropores in the interlayer are responsible for accommodating the shuttling polysulfides and offering sufficient electrolyte accessibility. Therefore, utilizing the sulfur/long-chain polysulfide redox couple with an efficient interlayer configuration in Li-S batteries may be a promising choice for high-power applications.

Abstract:The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is regarded as a promising high‐energy‐density battery system, in which the dissolution–precipitation redox reactions of the S cathode are critical. However, soluble Li polysulfides (LiPSs), as the indispensable intermediates, easily diffuse to the Li anode and react with the Li metal severely, thus depleting the active materials and inducing the rapid failure of the battery, especially under practical conditions. Herein, an organosulfur‐containing solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is tailored for the stabilizaiton of the Li anode in Li–S batteries by employing 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)thiophenol as an electrolyte additive. The organosulfur‐containing SEI protects the Li anode from the detrimental reactions with LiPSs and decreases its corrosion. Under practical conditions with a high‐loading S cathode (4.5 mgS cm−2), a low electrolyte/S ratio (5.0 µL mgS−1), and an ultrathin Li anode (50 µm), a Li–S battery delivers 82 cycles with an organosulfur‐containing SEI in comparison to 42 cycles with a routine SEI. This work provokes the vital insights into the role of the organic components of SEI in the protection of the Li anode in practical Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered promising candidates for next-generation advanced energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the severe shuttle effect and weak redox reaction severely restrict the practical application of Li-S batteries. Herein, a functional catalytic material of tin disulfide on porous carbon spheres (SnS2@CS) is designed as a sulfur host and separator modifier for lithium-sulfur batteries. SnS2@CS with high electrical conductivity, high specific surface area and abundant active sites can not only effectively improve the electrochemical activity but also accelerate the capture/diffusion of polysulfides. Theoretical calculations and in situ Raman also demonstrate that SnS2@CS can efficiently adsorb and catalyse the rapid conversion of polysulfides. Based on these advantages, the SnS2@CS-based Li-S battery delivers an excellent reversible capacity of 868 mAh/g at 0.5C (capacity retention of 96 %), a high rate capability of 852 mAh/g at 2C, and a durable cycle life with an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.029 % per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2C. Abstract:The practical use of the rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is still restricted by poor cycle life and rate performance caused by the shuttle of soluble redox intermediates and low conductivity of S/Li2S. A comprehensive approach is to tune the multi-electron redox reactions and construct reversible chemical bonds with polysulfide intermediates. In this study, RuO2 nano dots (NDs) are proposed to anchor polysulfides, trigger the surface-mediated reduction of polysulfides and to facilitate the formation of Li2S2/Li2S through its catalytic effect for the first time. When serving as the sulfur host, the RuO2 NDs can retard the shuttle of polysulfides, accelerate the redox reaction of polysulfides, and therefore result in improved sulfur utilization and enhanced rate performance. The designed RuO2@NMCs/S ternary electrodes with high sulfur loading of 70 wt% could achieve a low decay rate of 0.07% per cycle for 500 cycles at a 0.5 C-rate. Realized by fast electrode kinetics, the reversible capacity of 634 mA h g-1 is attained at a high C-rate of 5 C. Overall, this strategy sheds new light on the oxide mediators for reversible modulation of electrochemical reactions in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries.

Abstract:One crucial problem hindering the commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries with high theoretical specific energy is the ceaseless shuttle of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) between cathodes and anodes, which usually leads to rapid capacity fade and serious self-discharge issues. Herein, a unique bilayer coating strategy designed to modify the polypropylene separator was developed in this study, which consisted of a bottom zeolite (SSZ-13) layer serving as a LiPS movement barrier and a top ZnS layer used for accelerating redox processes of LiPSs. Benefiting from the synergetic effect, the bilayer-modified separator offers absolute block capability to LiPS diffusion, moreover, significant catalysis effect on sulfur species conversion, as well as outstanding lithium-ion (Li+) conductivity, excellent electrolyte wettability, and desirable mechanical properties. Consequently, the assembled lithium-sulfur cell with the SSZ-13/ZnS@polypropylene separator demonstrates excellent cycle stability and rate capability, showcasing a capacity decay rate of only 0.052% per cycle at 1 C over 500 cycles.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the sulfur reduction species (Li2Sx, 1 ≤ x ≤ 8) under realistic battery conditions are essential for the development of advanced practical Li-S cells that can reach their full theoretical capacity. However, it has been a great challenge to probe the sulfur reduction intermediates and products because of the lack of methods. This work employed various ex situ and in situ methods to study the mechanism of the Li-S redox reactions and the properties of Li2Sx and Li2S. Synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction analysis used to characterize dry powder deposits from lithium polysulfide solution suggests that the new crystallite phase may be lithium polysulfides. The formation of Li2S crystallites with a polyhedral structure was observed in cells with both the conventional (LiTFSI) electrolyte and polysulfide-based electrolyte. In addition, an in situ transmission electron microscopy experiment observed that the lithium diffusion to sulfur during discharge preferentially occurred at the sulfur surface and formed a solid Li2S crust. This may be the reason for the capacity fade in Li-S cells (as also suggested by EIS experiment in Supporting Information ). The results can be a guide for future studies and control of the sulfur species and meanwhile a baseline for approaching the theoretical capacity of the Li-S battery.

It was revealed by the real-time quantitative determination of polysulfide species and elemental sulfur by means of high-performance liquid chromatography in the course of the discharge and recharge of a Li-S battery. A three-step reduction mechanism including two chemical equilibrium reactions was proposed for the sulfur cathode discharge. The typical two-plateau discharge curve for the sulfur cathode can be explained. A two-step oxidation mechanism for Li2S and Li2S2 with a single chemical equilibrium among soluble polysulfide ions was proposed. The chemical equilibrium among S52-, S62-, S72-, and S82- throughout the entire oxidation process resulted for a single flat recharge curve in Li-S batteries.
Correlating Polysulfide Solvation Structure with Electrode Kinetics Towards Long‐Cycling Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising due to ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, their cycling lifespan is crucially affected by the electrode kinetics of lithium polysulfides. Herein, the polysulfide solvation structure is correlated with polysulfide electrode kinetics towards long-cycling Li-S batteries. The solvation structure derived from strong solvating power electrolyte induces fast anode kinetics and rapid anode failure, while that derived from weak solvating power electrolyte causes sluggish cathode kinetics and rapid capacity loss. By contrast, the solvation structure derived from medium solvating power electrolyte balances cathode and anode kinetics and improves the cycling performance of Li-S batteries. Li-S coin cells with ultra-thin Li anodes and high-S-loading cathodes deliver 146 cycles and a 338 Wh kg-1 pouch cell undergoes stable 30 cycles. This work clarifies the relationship between polysulfide solvation structure and electrode kinetics and inspires rational electrolyte design for long-cycling Li-S batteries. The polysulfide electrode kinetics regarding the sulfur cathode and the lithium anode are promoted as the solvating power of the polysulfide solvation structure increases. Both too fast and slow electrode kinetics induce rapid failure of Lithium-sulfur batteries. The polysulfide solvation structure with medium solvating power balances the cathode and anode kinetics and improves the cycling performance of high-energy-density Lithium-sulfur batteries.image

Abstract:The dissolution and diffusion of Li polysulfide (LiPS) intermediates are regarded as one of the most serious problems for capacity decay and cell failure of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein we proposed a failure mechanism of Li metal anode in Li-S cells based on the mechanistic investigation into the complex interactions between LiPSs and Li metal. The LiPSs participate the formation of inorganic layers in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in a LiPS-LiNO3 containing ether-based electrolyte. Li metal anode is well protected by the stable inorganic layer in-situ formed in an electrolyte containing 0.020 M Li2S5 (0.10 M sulfur) and 5.0 wt % LiNO3. The metal anode with LiF-Li2Sx riched SEI rendered a stable Coulombic efficiency of 95% after 233 cycles for Li-Cu half cells. A dendrite-free morphology of Li metal anode is observed under the harsh condition. When the LiPS is with a very high concentration of higher than 0.50 M sulfur in the organic electrolyte, the in-situ formed SEI cannot well maintain and the Li metal is gradually etched. Therefore, the polysulfide dissolution and diffusion should be delicately regulated to render a practical Li-S cell when the areal sulfur loading is high.
