Abstract:A novel structure and mechanism for high-speed modulation of semiconductor lasers are proposed and analyzed. The modulator consists of an antiresonant cavity acting as a rear reflector of the laser. The change of the absorption coefficient in the modulator results in a change in the reflectivity of the rear reflector, and consequently the Q-factor, the lasing threshold, and the output power. An implementation structure and numerical results for a Q-modulated distributed feedback laser are presented. The monolithically integrated Q-modulated laser has potential advantages of high speed, low wavelength chirp, high extinction ratio, and high power efficiency.

Abstract:For the efficient treatment of a broad variety of materials, pulsed CO2 laser radiation is well-suited. But nevertheless, CO2 lasers are well established in industrial processes, a significant disadvantage of all previously basicavailable commercial systems, which are suitable for material processing, is their restricted pulsability. This is not caused by the amplification properties of the active medium, but by the wavelength of about 10 μm. In this region the spectrum of optical materials, which can be used for modulation, especially Q-switching, is rather limited. In principle for acousto-optic modulation only Ge and for electro-optic modulation only CdTe are suitable materials. But both semiconductors are relatively power-sensitive and therefore Q-switching of conventional CO2 lasers is typically limited to less than 100 W of average power. This problem can be solved by the new resonator concept described below [1]. The aim is the optimum transformation of the potentially available power (cw up to the kW range) into average power of the pulsed radiation.

Abstract:Summary form only given, as follows. Novel structures and mechanisms for high-speed modulation of semiconductor lasers are proposed and analyzed. The monolithically integrated Q-modulated laser (QML) has advantages of high speed, high extinction ratio, low wavelength chirp and no insertion loss, and it does not require bandgap engineering of the quantum well material as in conventional electroabsorption modulated laser (EML).

Abstract:A detailed numerical study of the dynamic behavior of a Q-switched CO2 laser under partial spatial modulation conditions is presented. The Q-switching performance is strongly related to the switching speed and modulation depth of the modulator. The switching speed of most of the modulator principles are typically limited by one or more geometrical dimensions of the modulator. For example, the modulation bandwidth of an acousto-optic modulator is transition time limited. The switching speed is therefore strongly dependent on the optical beam size seen by the modulator along the axis of acoustic wave propagation. This paper is concerned with the impact of transit-time limited modulators with reduced spatial dimensions as compared to the laser beam size, on the Q-switching performance. Numerical simulations on a slit modulated laser beam show that depending on the boundary conditions and the transverse lasing mode, similar or higher Q-switch peak powers can be realized as compared to full-beam modulation.

Abstract:A simple actively Q-switched double-clad fiber laser combining an amplifying cavity is reported by using a dynamic acoustooptic Q-switching as a beam splitter. Sub-100-ns. pulses independence of the repetition rate of acoustooptic modulator are almost changeless with repetition rate varied from 50 kHz to 1.5 MHz. With 4.5-W absorbed power, 9.4-W peak-power pulses at 1.5-MHz repetition rate with 75-ns pulse duration are generated.

Abstract:An extension of the rate equation models for solid-state Raman laser is proposed and investigated with accounting for the dynamics of an acousto-optically (AO) Q-switch modulator and the effects of thermal lens provided by the pump beam. The improved model is aimed at outlining optimization strategies for wonderful laser performance with short pulse width and high peak power. A comparison between traditional intra-cavity and new couple-cavity configurations is made. The simulation results indicate that it is possible to realize an efficient sub-nanosecond coupled-cavity Raman laser by optimizing several important parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, a mechanical Q-switching is used in radio frequency (RF) excited waveguide CO2 laser to obtain high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) laser. The Q-switching system includes two confocal ZnSe lenses and a high speed mechanical chopper, which is inserted into the cavity. The peak power is up to 730 W and the pulse width 200 ns at the highest PRF 20 kHz. The laser also has the advantages of compact, small-volume, and low-cost. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We demonstrate anti-misalignment acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Ho: YLF ring cavity laser with a single corner cube prism (CCP) as the cavity mirror and a diode-pumped 1940 nm solid state laser as the pump source. We study the polarization state of oscillating light of ring cavity with the CCP by simulation calculations, which matched with the experimental results. In the continuous wave (CW) operation, the Ho: YLF laser achieves a total bidirectional output power of 3.8 W at the wavelength of 2063.5 nm, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 15% and a slope efficiency of 50.7%. The maximum allowable deviations of the CCP are 0.57° (pitch angle) and 1.65° (horizontal angle), respectively. We obtain a single pulse energy of 17 mJ and a pulse width of 113 ns at a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 100 Hz. The beam quality factors in the horizontal and vertical directions are $$ {\textrm{M}}_x^2 $$ = 1.01 and $$ {\textrm{M}}_y^2 $$ = 1.06, respectively, which are approached to the diffraction limit.

Abstract:A repetition-frequency-controllable double Q-switched (DQS) Ho:LuAG laser at 2098.34 nm with acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and Cr2+:ZnS saturable absorber (SA) was investigated. The maximum output power of 5.3 W was obtained at the AOM repetition frequency (RF) of 3.72 kHz, corresponding to the slope efficiency of 29.8%. The largest pulse energy of 2.8 mJ with the shortest pulse width of 54.2 ns was observed at the AOM RF of 2.64 kHz. Compared with the passively Q-switched Ho: LuAG laser, the DQS Ho: LuAG laser could generate shorter pulse width and larger pulse energy, and its RF could be controlled by the AOM RF. Abstract:π‐electron‐extended porphyrin‐pyrene functionalized covalent organic framework (ProPh‐PyTA‐COF) is successfully constructed, in this work, presenting excellent thermal stability, high crystallinity, and significant fluorescence emissions in diverse solvents. For the first time, the Q‐switched solid‐state laser using the COF as a saturable absorber is performed with high efficiency and its laser performance in terms of pump power is also described. Herein, a new π‐electron‐delocalized building block (ProPh‐4CHO) is reported for the construction of a π‐electron‐extended porphyrin/pyrene‐linked covalent organic framework (ProPh‐PyTA‐COF) for use as a saturable absorber (SA) in a Q‐switched all‐solid‐state laser. Employing a mode‐locked fiber laser operated with 130‐fs pulses at 1030 nm and a repetition rate of 28 MHz, ProPh‐PyTA‐COF exhibits remarkable optical nonlinear absorptions: two saturable absorptions with saturation intensities of 92 MW cm−2 and 1 kW cm−2. This material is used to fabricate the first pulsed Q‐switched all‐solid‐state laser incorporating a COF as an absorber. The laser incorporating this COF‐SA exhibited a pump power of 6.5 W with a pulse duration of 1.2 μs, corresponding to a pulse repetition rate of 94.4 kHz. This study not only reveals the possibility of using saturation absorption to pulse a solid‐state laser but also opens up a new path toward optical nonlinearity through the engineering of π‐bond delocalization.

Abstract:Q‐switched fiber lasers are of great interest in industrial material processing, nonlinear frequency conversion, spectroscopy etc. However, passive Q‐switching possesses drawbacks of degradation and failure of the saturable absorber and the difficulty in accurate modification of the repetition rate. To overcome these issues, active Q‐switching that can normally modulate the cavity quality‐factor by an externally‐driven Q‐switcher is in high demand. Herein, an actively Q‐switched laser with antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator is devised based on the high photo‐thermal efficiency (48%) and broadband response in antimonene. It is demonstrated that this actively modulated laser represents all‐optically tunable output parameters (e.g., output repetition rate), environmental stability, and easy synchronization. It is anticipated that this actively antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator with advantages of large modulation depth, low energy consumption, and high conversion efficiency has great potential in all‐optical information processing and pulsed laser engineering. An all‐optical, actively Q‐switched fiber laser enabled by an antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator is demonstrated by taking advantage of the high photo‐thermal efficiency and broadband response in antimonene. It is demonstrated that this actively modulated fiber laser represents all‐optically tunable output parameters, environmental stability, and easy synchronization, and has great potentials in information processing and pulsed laser.

Abstract:The key parameters of an optimally coupled doubly Q-switched laser are determined by maximizing the peak power. A group of general curves are generated by considering the single-photon absorption (SPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) processes in the GaAs, along with the Gaussian spatial distributions of the intracavity photon density, the initial population-inversion density and the influence of the acousto-optic (AO) Q-switch. These results are compared with the results obtained when maximizing the output energy of the doubly Q-switched laser, and the differences between these approaches are discussed. Sample calculations for a laser-diode-pumped Nd3+:YVO4 laser with both an AO modulator and a GaAs saturable absorber are presented to demonstrate the use of the curves and the relevant formulas.

Abstract:We report the characteristics of a diode-end-pumped, high-repetition-rate, acoustic-optic (AO) Q-switched Tm:YLF laser operating from 5 kHz to 10 kHz. In the continuous-wave (CW) regime, a maximum average output power of 8.5 W was obtained with a slope efficiency of 30.7%. Under the AO Q-switching regime, a maximum output power of 7.32 W was obtained at a repetition frequency of 5 kHz with a pulse width of 68 ns and a pulse energy of 1.4 mJ, corresponding to a peak power of 21.5 kW. A time-dependent rate equation model is introduced to theoretically analyze the results obtained in the experiment, in which the cross-relaxation phenomenon, upconversion losses and ground-state depletion are taken into account. Additionally, the evolution processes of population inversion density and intracavity photon number density with time are also presented. The theoretical results well predict the dependence of laser output characteristics of Tm:YLF crystal on the incident pump powers.

Abstract:Current active Q-switching is mainly generated by acousto-optical modulators (AOMs) or electro-optical modulators (EOMs). However, EOMs make the setup bulky, while AOMs require the radiofrequency (RF) signal and water-cooling. We present a novel approach to active Q-switching of an integrated waveguide chip laser by utilizing a deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal cell (6mm × 6mm) with a thickness of 2 mm. This device can be directly integrated onto the Ytterbium-doped waveguide chip and controlled by the electrical signal. In experiments, with an electrical signal with a pulse duration of 2 μs and a magnitude from 10 V to 84 V, the Q-switched lasers can be observed at a repetition rate ranging from 0.1 kHz to 20 kHz. The shortest pulse duration and the maximum slope efficiency is 38 ns and 22% respectively. This novel integrated and low-cost laser source is a promising tool for a broad range of applications such as gas sensing and LIDAR.

Abstract:A 3 mu m passively Q-switched Ho3-/Pr3- co-doped fiber laser by using Au nanocages as saturable absorber is demonstrated. Stable Q-switched pulse trains with a repetition rate of 82. 0 kHz are initially obtained as the pump power increases to 99. 7 mW. When the pump power increases to 347. 1 mW , the largest output power of 50. 7 mW with a pulse duration of 2. 21 mu s and a corresponding repetition rate of 169. 5 kHz is obtained. This study indicates that Au nanocages have a great potential as an outstanding optical modulator for mid-infrared pulses generation.

Abstract:A new type of double-control acousto-optic (A-O) Q-switched all solid state laser has been developed. A special home-made double-control driver, instead of a laser diode (LD) driver and an unattached A-O Q-switcher driver as used in the normal A-O Q-switched solid-state lasers, is used in the laser. In the double-control driver, both LD and the A-O Q-switcher work periodically at the same repetition rate as the output laser pulses. In each period, LD lights in advance of the time of the output laser pulse occurrence and quenches behind the laser pulse. At the same period, A-O Q-switcher starts working before LD and stops working behind LD. The new type of solid state infrared laser has much better performance in compare with the normal A-O Q-switched solid-state lasers at the same repetition rates: electric power saving more than 50%, temperature rising at main parts of the laser set dropping down with more than 10°C, time taken for thermally stable state being reduced to 23%. Pumped by a 1 W LD, the non-spurious output pulses with peak power of about 4 kW and width of 16.8 ns are obtained.

Abstract:A planar waveguide laser operating in a negative branch unstable resonator is Q-switched by an acoustooptic modulator in a new configuration, providing effective, high-speed switching. The laser using a 200-mum Nd:YAG core, face pumped by 10 laser diode bars, has produced 100-W output in a good beam quality at 100-kHz pulse rate, and 4.5 mJ at lower frequency with 15-ns pulse duration.
