Abstract:To understand the economic role played by independent auditing in China's transition economy and evaluate the performance of independent auditing system,it is important to investigate the demand for audit services as well as the evolution of the system. Based on the marketization reform of Initial Public Offering (IPO) in China,this paper examines the issue empirically from both the information demand and the monitoring demand perspectives. We find that,on the one hand,the demand for high-quality auditing increases with the progress of IPO marketization reform. IPO firms with lower uncertainty risk are more likely to select high-quality auditors after the implementation of authorization system. On the other hand,although the governance conflicts between managers and shareholders create the demand for high-quality auditing,the inadequacy of effective market constraint mechanisms results in governance conflicts between controlling and minority shareholders and reduces the demand for high-quality auditing. The ″absentee owner″ problem for the state controlling shareholders further weakens such a demand. Our findings suggest that the demand for high-quality auditing in China's capital market is not likely to increase unless the governance problem associated with controlling shareholders is addressed.

The Effect of Auditing on Promoting Exports: Evidence from Private Firms in Emerging Markets

Abstract:We investigate the effect of auditing on promoting exports for private firms in emerging markets. Using a sample of private firms from 125 countries between 2006 and 2015, we show that firms that have their financial statements audited have more exports than firms that do not have their financial statements audited. To infer causality, we employ a regression discontinuity design (RDD). Using the discontinuity around the mandatory financial audit threshold, we find that firms slightly above the threshold have more exports than do firms that are slightly below the threshold. We also exploit the countries with exogenous regulation shocks to the mandatory audits. Using the difference-in-differences (DiD) design, we find that firms that are exempted from mandatory audits have less exports subsequent to the regulation change. Further analyses reveal that the effect of auditing is more pronounced in countries with higher audit quality and for firms with limited alternative information. Our findings suggest that the auditing function promotes exports—an important economic consequence for the global economic development. This paper was accepted by Shivaram Rajgopal, accounting.

Abstract:After collecting the relevant literature on how the government audit impacts the performance of state-owned enterprises, this study compares the differences in the impact of government audit on the performance of state-owned enterprises in various regions and sizes, and collects 8090 data from a number of A-share listed state-owned enterprises for empirical analysis. According to the empirical results, government audits can promote the performance of state-owned enterprises, and such an influence is different in various regions and scales of state-owned enterprises. Further research shows that compared with the state-owned enterprises in the eastern region, the government audits can better promote the performance of the state-owned enterprises in the central and western regions. Compared with small-scale state-owned enterprises, government audits can better promote the performance of large-scale state-owned enterprises. Finally, this paper provides corresponding suggestions on how to conduct government audits in the central and western regions and small-scale state-owned enterprises.

Abstract:As an important index to measure the operating result of enterprises, profit is the focus of accounting information users. In recent years, with the emergence of financial fraud cases in the whole world, the authenticity and reliability of accounting profits have been questioned. The users of accounting information shift their focus from the quantity to the quality of accounting profits. How to evaluate the quality of profits comprehensively and reasonably has become the focus of enterprise financial analysis. At present, the academic world has not established a unified evaluation system and method. My study summarizes and evaluates four most commonly used methods for evaluating enterprise profit quality. The study finds that all kinds of methods have their own characteristics. Each method has advantages as well as disadvantages. It is believed that the quality of profit is affected by many factors, and a variety of methods can be used for comprehensive evaluation to ensure the accuracy of the evaluation result.

Abstract:In this paper, we review the empirical research on the value of auditing, audit independence, and audit fees published in Accounting Research and Auditing Research, the two premier accounting and auditing journals in China. We identify the main themes in the three areas and assess the consistency of the available empirical evidence on the topics we review. We also highlight the innovativeness of auditing studies published in Chinese language journals to English language readers of the global accounting academic community, before introducing the papers included in this Special Issue on Auditing in China. Finally, we identify gaps in the literature and suggest avenues to help promote further research in this area.

Abstract:The economic evaluation methods of existing industrial enterprises have many limitations. In this paper, an economic benefit evaluation method of industrial enterprises based on BP neural network optimization algorithm is proposed. This method takes the economic indicators of enterprises as input of artificial neural network, and uses the optimized BP neural network model to evaluate and analyze enterprises. The running time is greatly shortened, and the evaluation results are objective and accurate. An example is given to illustrate the implementation of the method. The example shows the feasibility of the method. In the fast-changing market situation, the sustainable development of enterprises has attracted the attention of all sectors of society and has become the focus of research. The sustainable development of the enterprise is the objective requirement of the sustainable development of the economy, the guarantee for the long-term economic benefit of the enterprise, and the fundamental method and way to realize the long-term development of the enterprise. Therefore, for enterprises, sustainable development is the primary task of enterprises. The research on sustainable development of enterprises has become a hot topic in the practice and theory field of enterprise management. Abstract:The purpose is to improve Chinese enterprises' economic benefit evaluation system based on big data and promote sustainable enterprise production. This paper studies the power supply enterprises-oriented Evaluation Index System (EIS) under the big data environment. Firstly, it expounds on the construction theory of the enterprise economic benefit model. Secondly, the comprehensive Grey Model (GM) based on improved weight and the power consumption prediction model based on Least Mean Square (LMS) neural network (NN) algorithm are introduced. Finally, the comprehensive GM model based on improved weight is used to evaluate the economic benefits of power supply enterprises. The power consumption prediction model based on the LMS-NN algorithm is used to predict the sustainable development of power supply enterprises. The results show that the profitability and solvency of joint-stock power companies are about 90 and 100, respectively, and the social contribution of state-owned power supply enterprises is the strongest. Lastly, it is predicted that the region will have 134.8 billion kWh of electricity and about 137.2 billion kWh of power consumption in 2020. The growth model and trend are consistent, but there are some errors in the specific power consumption data. Therefore, the audit method based on big data has a good evaluation effect on the economic benefits of enterprises. For example, the profits of private and joint-stock power supply enterprises are relatively high. In contrast, state-owned power supply enterprises have outstanding social contribution ability. The big data method is used to predict the power consumption in some areas, and the predicted value is consistent with the actual value. This study provides a reference for the follow-up economic benefit evaluation and sustainable development of enterprises.

Abstract:Benefit plan audits, a material but less understood public accounting service, represent a non-audit service that is “audit-related.” We explore the implications of benefit plan audits for the financial statement audit. We find that performing a benefit plan audit for a company significantly increases the likelihood that the firm will be selected as a company’s financial statement auditor in the future, particularly for smaller audit firms. Further, we find that companies that engage the same audit firm for both their benefit plan and financial statement audits have a significantly lower likelihood of misstatements and shorter audit report lags. Finally, we find evidence consistent with the joint provision of these services creating greater bonding and higher switching costs for the financial statement audit. Our findings speak to the continued debate over effective market expansion of financial statement audit providers, audit quality determinants, and audit efficiencies.

International expansion and audit opinion shopping: A signaling perspective

Abstract:Abstract Opinion shopping is an essential indication of audit collusion. Hence, it is crucial to explore the driving factors of audit uopinion shopping to better control and address this issue. Drawing upon signaling theory, this paper explores the relationship between international expansion and audit opinion shopping and the moderating roles of internal control quality and auditors’ quality. We find that the higher the level of international expansion of an enterprise, the greater the likelihood of audit opinion shopping. Furthermore, we also find that high internal control quality and high auditor quality can weaken the positive relationship between international expansion and audit opinion shopping. Besides, heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of international expansion on audit opinion shopping is more pronounced in non‐SOEs and firms which stay in the growth and maturity stage. This paper contributes to the antecedent research of audit opinion shopping and exposes the possible “dark side” of international expansion. Finally, this study may provide practical implications to help the authorities better regulate internationalized enterprises as well as contribute to the healthy development of the auditing market.
