Abstract:This article reports a systematic study on the seed-mediated growth of PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a variety of controlled morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by controlling a set of experimental parameters, which include the amount of ascorbic acid used as a reductant, the amount of HAuCl4 as a precursor to elemental Au, the reaction temperature, and the type of seeds employed. Starting from Pd nanocubes of 18 nm in edge length, PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, which includes hybrid dimers, coreshell nanocubes with flat faces, and coreshell nanocubes with concave faces could all be obtained by simply speeding up the reduction of HAuCl4. The same synthesis and control could also be extended to seeds based on Pd octahedrons. For the first time, it was possible to generate Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes and octahedrons with concave faces. The Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes with concave faces exhibited enhanced activity in catalyzing the oxidization of ascorbic acid relative to their counterparts with flat faces or the cubic Pd seeds.

Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.

Abstract:Bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles have received considerable attention for their unique optical, magnetic and catalytic properties. However, these properties will be dramatically modified under ambient conditions by their structure and/or composition change. Thus, it is of primary importance to study the complex transformation pathway of core-shell nanoparticles at an elevated temperature. In this work, by using an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray mapping system, the complete transformation process from a well-designed Pd@Au core-shell nanoparticle to a uniform alloy particle was visualized. It is revealed that this transformation process went through three steps, i.e., surface refacetting, particle resphering and complete alloying. Combining with a developed atomic kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we found that surface energy is the driving force for shape variation, and the different atomic activation barriers of surface diffusion and bulk migration result in the multistep transformation pathway. Our results offered important information for understanding the structure evolution of bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles, which is beneficial for the rational design of nanoparticles with kinetic stability.

Abstract:A series of anisotropic Au-Pd core-shell nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized by controlled overgrowth of Pd on preintroduced Au nanorods serving as seeds. Iodide ions can selectively adsorb on the {110} facets of Pd and change the final morphology of core-shell nanostructures. The overall morphology can be manipulated by changing the structure directing core or the amount H2PdCl4 introduced. These anisotropic nanostructures with adjustable exposure facets and sizes enrich the types of Au-Pd core-shell structures, while the mechanism discussing the formation process will provide useful information for the further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Bimetallic nanostructures are interesting materials for many applications ranging from plasmonics to catalysis. However, synthesizing bimetallic nanorods with good control over composition, morphology and maintaining an anisotropic shape is challenging. Here, we have shown a reproducible approach to the synthesize the bimetallic core-shell nanorods within a stabilizing mesoporous silica shell and with an Au core and a Pd metal shell with excellent control over their properties. Specifically, we demonstrate that the thickness and morphology of the Pd metal shell (rough/smooth) can be precisely tuned and studied the plasmonic properties of the resulting bimetallic nanostructures in detail. Our approach can be naturally extended to different or more than two metals leading to rod-shaped metal particles with highly tunable materials properties that are of interest in their use in optical and catalytic applications.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanoparticles have attracted tremendous interest on account of their merits in optics and catalysis.Their properties are strongly dependent on size,shape and composition.However,it is still a great challenge to control the growth process of metal nanocrystals to achieve a desired shape.In this paper,we decribe the use of single crystalline Au nanorods(NRs) with fixed facets and unique optical properties as seeds to prepare various core-shell hybrid nanostructures,including Au@Pd nanobars,arrow-headed Au NRs,Au nanooctahedra,orange segment-like Au@Ag nanoparticles,Au@Pt island NRs,and Au@PtAg island alloy NRs.The optical and catalytic properties of hybrid nanostructures are regulated via the composition and structure.Our investigations indicate that the formation of hybrid nanostructures is an effective way to tailor the properties of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanoalloys have attracted considerable attention for their wide applications in materials, optics, catalysis, and biomedicine, which largely rely on their composition-, size-, and shape-dependent properties. Because these properties change dynamically with working conditions, the knowledge of the complex transformation pathway of nanoalloys is highly demanded. Herein, we combined the in-situ aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and multiscale modeling to fully resolve the whole transformation trajectory of a bimetallic nanoalloy (Pd–Pt) at the atomic level. The transformation from core-shell to solid-solution structure is a multistep and temperature-dependent pathway, which includes monometallic-surface refacetting, bimetallic-surface refacetting, and alloy mixing, owing to the different atomic activation barriers of surface diffusion and bulk migration. The critical role of shell thickness in determining the transformation pathway was also revealed and explained. In particular, a unique partial core-shell structure with an anisotropic surface pattern was observed in the annealing process of ultrathin core-shell nanoparticles. This study offers a fundamental insight into the structure evolution of nanoalloys, which is beneficial for the development of functionalized nanoparticles with kinetic stability.

Abstract:This article reports a systematic study of the seed-mediated growth of Au@Pd coreshell nanocrystals with a variety of controlled sizes and morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by tuning a set of reaction parameters, including the type and concentration of capping agent, the amount of ascorbic acid used as the reducing agent, and the injection rate used for the precursor solution. Starting from Au nanospheres of 11 nm in diameter as the seeds, Au@Pd coreshell nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, including octahedra, concave octahedra, rectangular bars, cubes, concave cubes, and dendrites, could all be obtained by simply altering the reaction rate. For the first time, it was possible to generate Au@Pd nanocrystals with concave structures on the surfaces while their sizes were kept below 20 nm. In addition, the as-prepared Au@Pd nanocubes can be used as seeds to generate Au@Pd@Au and Au@Pd@Au@Pd nanocrystals with multishelled structures.

Abstract:The development of an efficient synthesis method to produce multimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with a desirable structure is strongly required to clarify the structure-composition-property relationship of NPs and to investigate their possible applications. However, the controlled synthesis of NPs consisting of multiple (n ≥ 3) noble metal components has been relatively unexplored in comparison to bimetallic NPs. In the present work, we have demonstrated a facile one-pot aqueous approach for the controlled synthesis of trimetallic Au@PdPt core-shell NPs with a well-defined octahedral Au core and a highly crystalline dendritic Pd-Pt alloy shell (Auoct@PdPt NPs). The simultaneous reduction of multiple metal precursors with dual reducing agents, namely, ascorbic acid and hydrazine, gave a fine control over the nucleation and growth kinetics of NPs, resulting in the formation of novel Auoct@PdPt NPs. The prepared NPs showed excellent catalytic performance for methanol electrooxidation, which can be attributed to their optimized binding strength toward adsorbate molecules due to the improved charge transfer between core and shell of the NPs. The present strategy can offer a convenient and valuable way to fabricate multicomponent nanostructures with desired structures and functions.

Abstract:Au@ZnO nanospheres with controlled core-shell and yolk-shell features were successfully fabricated through a facile template-based solvothermal method using carbonaceous layers as intermediate. The active carbonaceous layers containing numerous surface functional groups such as OH and C═O play key roles in fabrication of the Au@ZnO nanospheres. The structures of Au@ZnO can easily controlled by adjusting the concentration of Zn ions aqueous solution and/or the size of Au@C microspheres. The synthesis strategy proposed in this paper is also verified to be suitable for fabricating some other Au@metallic oxides nanospheres such as Au@SnO2 and Au@Fe2O3 with controlled structures. Furthermore, due to the synergic effect of the surface plasma resonance effect of Au cores and the large surface area of 122.67 m2 g-1, the Au@ZnO nanospheres with yolk-shell feature exhibite good photocatalytic activity and stability under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:A new type of concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals is synthesized through a kinetically controlled growth process. Pd nanocubes of 56 nm are used as the inner core, and CTAC and Br- are used as the capping agent and selective adsorbent, respectively. A suitable ratio of HAuCl4 and cubic Pd seeds and the presence of Br- anions are critical to the growth of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals. The fast deposition rate on the corners of the cubic Pd seeds promotes the overgrowth of the Au outer shell along the < 111 > direction, leading to the formation of concave cubic nanostructures. The reduction process is monitored by the surface plasmon resonance spectra of the nanocrystals, and the extinction band became broader and red shifted as the nanocrystals became larger. The electrocatalytic properties of the concave cubic Pd@Au core-shell nanocrystals were investigated with the cathodic electrochemiluminescence reaction of luminol and H2O2. A possible electrocatalytic mechanism was proposed and analyzed.
Formation of Pd/Au Nanostructures from Pd Nanowires Via Galvanic Replacement Reaction

Abstract:Bimetallic nanostructures with non-random metal atoms distribution are very important for various applications. To synthesize such structures via benign wet chemistry approach remains challenging. This paper reports a synthesis of a Au/Pd alloy nanostructure through the galvanic replacement reaction between Pd ultrathin nanowires (2.4 +/- 0.2 nm in width, over 30 nm in length) and AuCl3 in toluene. Both morphological and structural changes were monitored during the reaction up to 10 h. Continuous changes of chemical composition and crystalline structure from Pd nanowires to Pd68Au32 and Pd45Au55 alloys, and to Au nanoparticles were observed. More interestingly, by using combined techniques such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), UV-vis absorption, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, we found the formation of Pd68Au32 non-random alloy with Au-rich core and Pd-rich shell, and random Pd45Au55 alloy with uniformly mixed Pd and Au atom inside the nanoparticles, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that alkylamine will strongly stabilize Pd to the surface, resulting in diffusion of Au atoms into the core region to form a non-random alloy. We believe such benign synthetic techniques can also enable the large scale preparation of various types of non-random alloys for several technically important catalysis applications.

Abstract:We report an atomic scale controllable synthesis of Pd/Pt core shell nanoparticles (NPs) via area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a modified surface. The method involves utilizing octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to modify the surface. Take the usage of pinholes on SAMs as active sites for the initial core nucleation, and subsequent selective deposition of the second metal as the shell layer. Since new nucleation sites can be effectively blocked by surface ODTS SAMs in the second deposition stage, we demonstrate the successful growth of Pd/Pt and Pt/Pd NPs with uniform core shell structures and narrow size distribution. The size, shell thickness and composition of the NPs can be controlled precisely by varying the ALD cycles. Such core shell structures can be realized by using regular ALD recipes without special adjustment. This SAMs assisted area-selective ALD method of core shell structure fabrication greatly expands the applicability of ALD in fabricating novel structures and can be readily applied to the growth of NPs with other compositions.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of Pd3Au@Pt/C by atomic layer deposition (ALD) combined with a wet chemical method. Initially, nearly uniform Pd3Au nanoparticles (NPs) (∼4.7 nm) supported on carbon with a loading of ∼20 wt% were prepared by reducing metal complexes confined in reverse micelles adsorbed on carbon. Next, a Pt thin layer (less than 1 nm) was selectively deposited on purified Pd3Au particles instead of on carbon by regioselective ALD that likely arises from the coverage of nucleation sites on carbon by surfactant molecules in conjunction with catalytic decomposition of the Pt precursor on Pd3Au. The resulting core–shell structured material was subject to TEM, HAADF-STEM/EDX, XRD, XPS and electrochemical measurements. Interestingly, Pd3Au@Pt/C demonstrates a significantly improved electrocatalytic activity toward both formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared with Pd3Au/C and state-of-the art Pt/C. This study opens up a unique avenue for the synthesis core/shell structured materials with potential applications in catalysis, electrocatalysis, and so on.

Abstract:The heteroepitaxial growth of the core-shell nanocrystals composed of Pd and Au is developed. Pd nanocubes or Au nano-octahedrons are utilized as the cores. The growths of the Au and Pd shells are realized under similar conditions, where the same reducing agent and stabilizing surfactant are employed. The preparation is highly controllable, and the epitaxial growth is repeated up to three times to yield Pd@Au@Pd@Au and Au@Pd@Au@Pd core-trishell nanocrystals. The thickness of each shell is readily varied by changing the amount of the metal salts used for growth. All of the nanocrystal products have narrow size distributions and are single crystalline. The plasmon resonance properties of these nanocrystals are mainly determined by the exterior shell. The plasmon of the Pd-shell-terminated nanocrystals is suppressed, while that of the Au-shell-terminated ones is recovered and is stronger when the Au shell becomes thicker. This growth method can potentially be extended to other metals for the synthetic design of more complex core-multishell metal nanostructures with desirable optical, catalytic, and magnetic properties.

Abstract:The alloy-core@shell nanoparticle structure combines the advantages of a robust noble-metal shell and a tunable alloy-core composition. In this study we demonstrate a set of linear correlations between the binding of adsorbates to the shell and the alloy-core composition, which are general across a range of nanoparticle compositions, size, and adsorbate molecules. This systematic tunability allows for a simple approach to the design of such catalysts. Calculations of candidate structures for the hydrogen evolution reaction predict a high activity for the PtRu@Pd structure, in good agreement with what has been reported previously. Calculations of alloy-core@Pt 140-atom nanoparticles reveal new candidate structures for CO oxidation at high temperature, including Au0.65Pd0.35@Pt and Au0.73Pt0.27@Pt, which are predicted to have reaction rates 200 times higher than that of Pt(111).
