Abstract:In this paper, we study a nano CaO-based CO2 adsorbent obtained from a nano CaCO3 precursor by calcination. Nano CaO-based CO 2 adsorbents possess special features that underline their potential use in circulating fluidized beds coal gasification. A fixed fluid bed reactor was used to evaluate the target adsorbent, which was then analyzed using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The following properties were observed from the adsorbent produced: (1) lower carbonation and regeneration temperatures. This means energy savings in the CaCO3 regeneration looping system; (2) faster reaction rate with CO2. As such, the adsorbent meets the fast reaction needs of CFB systems; (3) higher sorption capacity of CO2, especially in fast reaction, and lower decay of sorption capacity; and (4) lower attrition loss during the looping process. Overall, the observed properties demonstrate the applicability of nano CaO-based CO2 adsorbents in CFB coal gasification and reactive sorption enhanced reforming.

Abstract:Adsorption technology is recognised to be a promising CO2 capture method due to its desirable characteristics e.g. reusable nature of adsorbents, low capital investment and easy automatic operation. To further improve thermal performance, internal heat recovery is adopted for adsorption CO2 capture through analogy with adsorption refrigeration. Based on carbon pump theory, thermal performance of 4-step temperature swing adsorption (TSA) processes is analysed at various adsorption/desorption temperatures and pressures. Exergy efficiency of adsorption CO2 capture with and without heat recovery will be evaluated and compared by using experimental adsorption characteristics of activated carbon. Metal part and unused percentage of adsorption reactor are defined to further assess their influence on system performance in real application. Results indicate that sensible heat of adsorbents and adsorbed phase account for the major part of heat consumption. For different desorption/adsorption temperatures and pressures, theoretical exergy efficiency of 4-step TSA cycle ranges from 0.022 to 0.221. Heat recovery is conducive to exergy efficiency. Through heat recovery, exergy efficiency could be improved from 54.3% to 84.6% when mass ratio increases from 0 to 8. Similarly, the improvement by using heat recovery is up to 90% in terms of different unused percentages.

Abstract:Exploring high-performing adsorption-driven heat pumps (AHPs) remains a challenging task owing to the low working capacity, high regeneration temperature, and low energy efficiency of conventional adsorbents. Quick discovery of the novel promising adsorbents could help to improve the coefficient of performance of AHPs for heating (COPH) and cooling (COPC). Herein, we reported an approach to identify the high-performing covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) for heating, cooling, and ice making by high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and, for the first time, machine learning. It was demonstrated that compared with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), COFs were more suitable adsorbents of AHPs for cooling because of their weak interaction toward ethanol that favors stepwise adsorption. Structure-property relationship analysis revealed that the average enthalpy of adsorption commensurate with the enthalpy of evaporation will benefit the performance of AHPs besides the high working capacity and low step positions of adsorption isotherms. In order to reduce the computational cost of screening, a random forest model was developed to successfully predict the COPC of both COFs and MOFs.

Abstract:Using high-throughput screening coupled with state-of-the-art van der Waals density functional theory, we investigate the adsorption properties of four important molecules, H_2, CO_2, CH_4, and H_2O in MOF-74-M with M = Be, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Zr, Nb, Ru, Rh, Pd, La, W, Os, Ir, and Pt. We show that high-throughput techniques can aid in speeding up the development and refinement of effective materials for hydrogen storage, carbon capture, and gas separation. The exploration of the configurational adsorption space allows us to extract crucial information concerning, for example, the competition of water with CO_2 for the adsorption "pockets." We find that only a few noble metals---Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt---favor the adsorption of CO_2 and hence are potential candidates for effective carbon-capture materials. Our findings further reveal significant differences in the binding characteristics of H_2, CO_2, CH_4, and H_2O within the MOF structure, indicating that molecular blends can be successfully separated by these nano-porous materials.
Computational screening of metal–organic frameworks for separation of CO2 and N2 from wet flue gas

Abstract:In response to the challenging task of effecting CO 2 and N 2 adsorption separation under humid gas conditions, this study employs a methodology that integrates molecular simulation with high-throughput screening. The focus is on investigating the adsorption separation of a ternary mixture (CO 2 /N 2 /H 2 O) utilizing the most recent experimental synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) from the CoRE-MOF-2019 database. To circumvent the competitive adsorption of water vapor, materials with excessive hydrophilicity are systematically excluded. Subsequently, a univariate analysis is conducted on the remaining 1343 MOFs, exploring the intricate relationships between key structural parameters such as pore limiting diameter, maximum pore cavity diameter of free channels (LCD), pore volume ( V pore ), volume surface area (VSA), weight surface area, density ( ρ ), porosity ( φ ), Henry coefficient ( K ), adsorption heat ( ), and metal types. The investigation reveals positive correlations between ρ , K , and with selectivity, while other descriptors exhibit negative correlations. Notably, MOFs enriched with Cd and Cu demonstrate superior performance. Subsequent analysis employs Pearson coefficients and a decision tree model to rank descriptors and identify the top three descriptors (LCD, VSA, and ) influencing performance. Utilizing these descriptors, the decision tree model delineates optimal design criteria: > 28.296 kJ mol −1 , LCD 727.596 m 2 cm −3 . To predict the performance of MOFs that have not yet been synthesized or experimentally validated, we employed the nine descriptors for model training and out-of-sample validation. The decision tree classifier exhibits high prediction accuracy and shows excellent transferability, effectively delineating the boundaries between different performance classes by capturing structural–selectivity correlations. This process culminates in the screening of 15 optimal MOFs, offering theoretical insights for the adsorption separation of CO 2 in humid flue gas.

Abstract:Due to burgeoning carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, adsorption post-combustion capture technology gathers momentum. Cost-effective adsorbents with prominent performance draw more attention. Thus, a novel KOH activation biomass-derived activated carbon, i.e. BBC-KOH, is developed and investigated in terms of textural properties, adsorption/desorption temperatures, desorption heat and cyclic stability. A techno-economic assessment of a solar-assisted coal-fired power plant integrated with temperature swing adsorption process is conducted to evaluate potential merits in a practical application. Results demonstrate that BBC-KOH could perform an excellent adsorption capacity (1.50 mmol center dot g- 1 at 25 degrees C) with a low desorption temperature (1.42 mmol center dot g- 1 at 70 degrees C) and could be desorbed completely at 80 degrees C, i.e. 1.54 mmol center dot g- 1. Compared with solar-assisted coal-fired power plant systems using monoethanolamine and polyethyleneimine/silica, carbon emission intensity, levelized cost of electricity and cost of CO2 removed of the system using BBC-KOH always show the best performance, corresponding to 93.22 g center dot kWh-1, 59.19 USD center dot MWh-1 and 14.12 USD center dot tonCO2-1 , respectively. It reveals that BBC-KOH may be a potential solution to carbon capture with low capital cost, low regeneration temperature and excellent adsorption capacity.
High-Throughput Screening of the CoRE-MOF-2019 Database for CO2 Capture from Wet Flue Gas: A Multi-Scale Modeling Strategy

Abstract:Stabilizing the escalating CO2 levels in the atmosphere is a grand challenge in view of the increasing global demand for energy, the majority of which currently comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Capturing CO2 from point source emissions using solid adsorbents may play a part in meeting this challenge, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising class of materials for this purpose. It is important to consider the co-adsorption of water when designing materials for CO2 capture from post-combustion flue gases. Computational high-throughput screening (HTS) is a powerful tool to identify top-performing candidates for a particular application from a large material database. Using a multi-scale modeling strategy that includes a machine learning model, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, force field (FF) optimization, and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, we carried out a systematic computational HTS of the all-solvent-removed version of the computation-ready experimental metal-organic framework (CoRE-MOF-2019) database for selective adsorption of CO2 from a wet flue gas mixture. After initial screening based on the pore diameters, a total of 3703 unique MOFs from the database were considered for screening based on the FF interaction energies of CO2, N2, and H2O molecules with the MOFs. MOFs showing stronger interactions with CO2 compared to that with H2O and N2 were considered for the next level of screening based on the interaction energies calculated from DFT. CO2-selective MOFs from DFT screening were further screened using two-component (CO2 and N2) and finally three-component (CO2, N2, and H2O) GCMC simulations to predict the CO2 capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our screening study identified MOFs that show selective CO2 adsorption under wet flue gas conditions with significant CO2 uptake capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity in the presence of water vapor. We also analyzed the nature of pore confinements responsible for the observed CO2 selectivity.

Abstract:The CO 2 capture from CO 2 /H 2 gas mixtures in syngas is a crucial issue for hydrogen production from steam methane reforming in industry, as the presence of CO 2 directly affects the purity of H 2 . A combination of high-throughput screening method and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation was utilized to evaluate and screen 1725 metal-organic frameworks in detail as a means of determining their adsorption performance for CO 2 /H 2 gas mixtures. The adsorption and separation performance of double-linker MOFs was comprehensively evaluated using eight evaluation indicators, namely the largest cavity diameter, accessible surface area, pore occupied accessible volume, porosity, adsorption selectivity, working capacity, adsorbent performance score and percent regeneration, thus the six optimal performance frameworks were screened for further studying their single-component adsorption and binary competitive adsorption of CO 2 /H 2 , respectively. The CO 2 adsorption selectivity at different CO 2 /H 2 feed ratios was also evaluated, which indicated their excellent adsorption and separation performance. The microscopic adsorption mechanism for CO 2 and H 2 at the molecular level were investigated by analyzing the radial distribution function and density distribution. This study may provide directional guidance and reference for subsequent experiments on the adsorption and separation of CO 2 /H 2 .

Structure–property relationship of metal–organic frameworks for alcohol-based adsorption-driven heat pumps via high-throughput computational screening

Abstract:Adsorption-driven heat pumps (AHPs) based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been garnering rapidly growing research interests due to their outstanding adsorption performance. However, the quick discovery of potential MOF candidates for cooling/heating from a large number of MOFs is still a hurdle for developing highly efficient AHPs. In this work, we performed high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to assess the adsorption cooling efficiencies (i.e., coefficient of performance for cooling, COPC) of 1527 computationally ready experimental (CoRE) MOF structures using ethanol as the working fluid. On the basis of the obtained correlations between the MOF structures, properties, adsorption performance, and adsorption cooling efficiency, we found that the pore size of 10-15 angstrom, rather than larger pores, was favorable for both ethanol working capacity (W) and COPC. Moreover, both W and averaged enthalpy of adsorption (H-ads) played dominant roles in determining the COPC value. Principle component analysis (PCA) and decision tree (DT) modeling revealed that there is interplay between the pore size, W, and H-ads. For MOFs with low working capacities (W 0.27 g g(-1)), large pore size is favorable for COPC; for MOFs with high working capacities (W > 0.27 g g(-1)), low H-ads is more important for COPC. Furthermore, the top-performing MOFs exhibited stepwise adsorption and low Henry's constant, both of which are beneficial for COPC. In addition, we revealed that the incommensurate total interaction energy of MOF-ethanol pairs between the preheating and desorption processes will benefit W, thereby eventually leading to improved COPC, and vice versa. Finally, the evolutionary tendency of screening validated our screening strategy and structure-property relationship, which was also supported by the cooling efficiency predicted by the mathematical model using experimentally measured isotherms.
An Efficient Multi-Scale Lattice Model Approach To Screening Nano-Porous Adsorbents

Abstract:We present a multi-scale, hierarchical, approach for developing lattice models to estimate adsorption in nano-porous sorbents, derived on the basis of underlying atomistic potentials. This approach is a generalization of earlier work in zeolites (where the specific adsorption sites are easily definable) to encompass both specific as well as diffuse adsorption; the latter often dominates in the case of nano-porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In conjunction with appropriately coarse grained guest-guest interactions, we demonstrate that our lattice approach offers semi-quantitative to quantitative agreement as compared to fully atomistic simulation from the low pressure regime through saturation. However, it also yields orders-of-magnitude acceleration versus the latter, thus enabling high-throughput screenings of both non-polar and polar adsorbates with high efficiency. We also show how our lattice model can be extended to facilitate rapid, qualitative screening of transport properties via appropriate calibration. Although our example applications focus on CO2 adsorption in MOFs, this approach is readily generalizable to various nano-porous materials (MOFs, zeolites...) and guest adsorbates (CO2, H-2, hydrocarbons). Abstract:Adsorption-driven osmotic heat engines offer an alternative way for harvesting low-grade waste heat below 80°C. In this study, we performed a high-throughput computational screening based on grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to identify the high-performance metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from 1322 computationally ready experimental MOF structures for adsorption-driven osmotic heat engines with LiCl-methanol as the working fluid. Structure-property relationship analysis reveals that MOFs exhibiting high energy efficiency possess large working capacity, pore size and surface area, and moderate adsorption enthalpy comparable to the evaporation enthalpy. Furthermore, machine learning is employed to accelerate the computational screening for satisfied MOFs via the structure properties. The optimal structure properties of the MOFs are further identified via the ensemble-based regression model by optimizing the energy efficiency via the genetic algorithm, which shed light on rationally designing and fabricating MOFs for desired heat-to-electricity conversion.

Research Progress of High-throughput Computational Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:During the past decades, extensive investigations on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultrahigh surface area for gas adsorption and separation have been reported. With the increasing number of possible MOFs, it has been a great challenge to discover high-performing MOFs of interest from numerous structures. High-throughput computational screening (HTCS) is a powerful tool to accelerate the development of MOFs for application of interest and explores the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) to facilitate the rational design of top-performing MOFs. In this review, we summarize the MOF databases used for HTCS, mainly including MOFs collected from experimentally synthesized MOFs (i. e. eMOFs), and the hypothetical MOFs constructed by computer-aided tools (i. e. hMOFs). Moreover, there are currently two important screening strategies, molecular simulation and machine learning-based HTCS. A vast majority of HTCS have been performed by molecular simulations including grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, in which the accuracy of force field parameters play a criticl role in the reliability of HTCS. GCMC is able to predict the adsorption performance of MOFs such as adsorption capacity, selectivity and heat of adsorption, whereas MD is commonly used to estimate the dynamic property of adsorbates, e. g. diffusion coefficient and permeability. Additionally, lattice GCMC and classical density functional theory (cDFT) are also highlighted for computational screening of MOFs in this review. Machine learning consisting of various algorithms is a recently developed strategy with high efficiency and low computational cost, which is a more powerful and promising technique in future. At last, the investigations on the utilization of HTCS in CH4 storage, H-2 storage, CO2 capture and gas separation were outlined. By reviewing the recent research progress in HTCS, we pointed out the current challenges and opportunities for the furture development of HTCS for MOFs, which will be the major engine for the commercialization of MOFs in various applications of interests.

Abstract:Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great interest in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) as promising carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorbents. The energy performance in relation to the regeneration process is a crucial factor when screening for suitable CCS MOF adsorbents. However, few experimental methods have been reported for evaluating the energy requirements for their regeneration. Herein, we proposed an experimental strategy to investigate the energy performance of MOF adsorbents for CO2 capture in the temperature swing adsorption (TSA) process using a combination of calorimetry and thermal analysis method. Five well-characterized isomorphic zirconium-based MOFs (University of Oslo 66-X, where X = H, NH2, (OH)2, C4H4, or NO2) were reliably evaluated using this strategy. The energy parameters related to regeneration, including specific heat capacities, thermodynamic functions, desorption temperatures, regeneration energy, CO2 working capacities, and parasitic energy, were accurately determined for these MOFs. The results indicated that the key determinants for the regeneration energy efficiency of CO2 adsorbents were their specific heat capacities and CO2 working capacities during a TSA cycle. More importantly, the proposed strategy may provide a feasible and effective experimental approach to study and evaluate the potential of adsorbents for CO2 capture.

Evaluating metal–organic frameworks for post-combustion carbon dioxide capture via temperature swing adsorption

Abstract:Two representative metal–organic frameworks, Zn4O(BTB)2 (BTB3− = 1,3,5-benzenetribenzoate; MOF-177) and Mg2(dobdc) (dobdc4− = 1,4-dioxido-2,5-benzenedicarboxylate; Mg-MOF-74, CPO-27-Mg), are evaluated in detail for their potential use in post-combustion CO2 capture via temperature swing adsorption (TSA). Low-pressure single-component CO2 and N2 adsorption isotherms were measured every 10 °C from 20 to 200 °C, allowing the performance of each material to be analyzed precisely. In order to gain a more complete understanding of the separation phenomena and the thermodynamics of CO2 adsorption, the isotherms were analyzed using a variety of methods. With regard to the isosteric heat of CO2 adsorption, Mg2(dobdc) exhibits an abrupt drop at loadings approaching the saturation of the Mg2+ sites, which has significant implications for regeneration in different industrial applications. The CO2/N2 selectivities were calculated using ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for MOF-177, Mg2(dobdc), and zeolite NaX, and working capacities were estimated using a simplified TSA model. Significantly, MOF-177 fails to exhibit a positive working capacity even at regeneration temperatures as high as 200 °C, while Mg2(dobdc) reaches a working capacity of 17.6 wt % at this temperature. Breakthrough simulations were also performed for the three materials, demonstrating the superior performance of Mg2(dobdc) over MOF-177 and zeolite NaX. These results show that the presence of strong CO2 adsorption sites is essential for a metal–organic framework to be of utility in post-combustion CO2 capture via a TSA process, and present a methodology for the evaluation of new metal–organic frameworks via analysis of single-component gas adsorption isotherms.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for carbon capture applications due to their high CO2 capacities and tunable properties. Amongst the many possible MOFs, metal-substituted compounds based on M-DOBDC and M-HKUST-1 have demonstrated amongst the highest CO2 capacities at the low pressures typical of flue gasses. Here we explore the possibility for additional performance tuning of these compounds by computationally screening 36 metal-substituted variants (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, W, Sn, and Pb) with respect to their CO2 adsorption enthalpy, $\Delta$H (T=300K). Supercell calculations based on van der Waals density functional theory (vdW-DF) yield enthalpies in good agreement with experimental measurements, out-performing semi-empirical (DFT-D2) and conventional (LDA and GGA) functionals. Our screening identifies 13 compounds having $\Delta$H values within the targeted thermodynamic window 40 $\leq$ $\Delta$H $\leq$ 75 kJ/mol: 8 are based on M-DODBC (M=Mg, Ca, Sr, Sc, Ti, V, Mo, and W), and 5 on M-HKUST-1 (M= Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Sc). Variations in the electronic structure and the geometry of the structural building unit are examined and used to rationalize trends in CO2 affinity. In particular, the partial charge on the coordinatively unsaturated metal sites is found to correlate with $\Delta$H, suggesting that this property may be used as a simple performance descriptor. The ability to rapidly distinguish promising MOFs from those that are "thermodynamic dead-ends" will be helpful in guiding synthesis efforts towards promising compounds.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential to be used as porous adsorbents and membranes to achieve high-performance methane purification. Although the continuous increase in the number and diversity of MOFs and COFs is a great opportunity for the discovery of novel adsorbents and membranes with superior performances, evaluating such a vast number of materials in the quickest and most effective manner requires the development of computational approaches. High-throughput computational screening based on molecular simulations has been extensively used to identify the most promising MOFs and COFs for methane purification. However, the enormous and ever-growing material space necessitates more efficient approaches in terms of time and effort. Combining data science with molecular simulations has recently accelerated the discovery of optimal MOF and COF materials for methane purification and revealed the hidden structure–performance relationships. In this perspective, we highlighted the recent developments in combining high-throughput molecular simulations and machine learning to accurately identify the most promising MOF and COF adsorbents and membranes among thousands of candidates for separating methane from other gases including acetylene, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, and nitrogen. After providing a brief overview of the topic, we reviewed the pioneering contributions in the field and discussed the current opportunities and challenges that we need to direct our efforts for the design and discovery of adsorbent and membrane materials.

Abstract:Fossil fuel-fired thermal power plants are a major source of CO_2 emissions.The direct removal of the latter from high-temperature flue gases can contribute to a decrease in system energy losses.Hence,increasing attention has been directed to the research and development of high-temperature CO_2 adsorbents and absorbents.Analyzed and compared were the carbon-based adsorbents,zeolites and hydrotalcite-like compounds in high-temperature CO_2 adsorbents as well as lithium-based absorbents and calcium-based absorbents in high-temperature CO_2 absorbents.Chemically modified hydrotalcite-like compounds at a temperature in excess of 140℃ possess the highest CO_2 adsorbing capacity among high-temperature adsorbents. At a temperature of 600 ℃ or higher the precipitated calcium carbonate and CaO/Ca_(12)Al_(14)O_(33) in calcium-based absorbents have a relatively high absorbing ability and cyclic reaction activity.In consideration of the existing problems regarding the above-mentioned high-temperature adsorbents and absorbents the authors have proposed as focuses of research the following items: high-temperature adsorption/absorption mechanism,the enhancement of the ability of cyclic adsorption/absorption of CO_2 and the improvement of related preparation technology.

Abstract:The development of improving energy efficiency and developing clean energy is relatively slow, so the efficient separation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas using some porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted much attention. This paper mainly focuses on current research and development on carbon dioxide adsorption in MOFs. Initially, the traditional synthesis methods and the new MOF methods in recent years and the activation methods that improve the shortcomings of new methods are all reviewed. Besides, pristine MOFs with adjusting the ligands is also introduced because it is considered an alternative to enhance the adsorptive performance. Furthermore, MOFs incorporated with graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, zeolites, and ionic liquids to construct composite materials and apply in CO2 are also summarized. Finally, the expectation on this application is also presented.
