Abstract:Increasingly, the physics community is attending to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), both in language and action. We are more publicly recognizing our individual responsibilities as physicists to address social injustice and systemic oppression. To this end, our physics classrooms are key levers for action. While we have made great strides in teaching traditional content and habits of mind useful in physics, if we expand our educational practices to more completely reflect the full range of what it means to be a physicist, we can make our classrooms more inclusive and equitable and support the needed diversification of our field. Ultimately how, and by whom, physics is enacted are part of the discipline itself and ought to be included in our teaching about the professional practices of physicists. We present two complementary approaches for broadening the focus of our classes, share models for enacting these in middle-division physics courses at two distinct institutional types, and provide evidence of positive impacts on students’ sense of identity and notions of what it means to be a physicist.

Importance of accounting for student identities and intersectionality for creating equitable and inclusive physics learning environments

Abstract:This research focuses on the experiences of seven undergraduate women who were majoring in physics in a medium-size physics department at a small liberal arts college. In the semi-structured, empathetic interviews we conducted, the women discussed how they decided to major in physics, their interactions with their peers and instructors, who supported them during their physics trajectory, and suggestions that would improve their experiences in physics. We used Standpoint theory and focused on the experiences of undergraduate women to get a holistic perspective of how they became interested in physics, how they have been supported in their physics journey as well as identify any challenges that they faced in their undergraduate physics program due to their identity. Using synergistic frameworks such as the Domains of Power and the Holistic Ecosystem for Learning Physics in an Inclusive and Equitable Environment (HELPIEE), we analyzed how those in the position of power, e.g., instructors, can play important roles in establishing and maintaining safe, equitable, and inclusive environments for students, which is especially important for historically marginalized students such as women and ethnic and racial minority students in physics. We also discuss the suggestions provided by the undergraduate women to implement in the future to support current and future undergraduate women in physics and astronomy. Their suggestions are separated as personal advice for peers and suggestions for physics instructors.

Role of inclusiveness of learning environment in predicting students' outcomes in courses in which women are not underrepresented

Abstract:Student beliefs in introductory physics courses can influence their course outcomes and retention in STEM disciplines and future career aspirations. This study used survey data from 501 students in the first of two-semester algebra-based introductory physics courses primarily taken by bioscience majors, in which women make up approximately 65% of the class. We investigated how the learning environment including perceived recognition, peer interaction, and sense of belonging correlate with students' physics outcomes, including their physics self-efficacy, interest, and identity. We found that in general, women had lower physics beliefs than men and the learning environment plays a major role in explaining student outcomes. We also found that perceived recognition played an important role in predicting students' physics identity and students' sense of belonging played an important role in predicting students' physics self-efficacy in the first algebra-based introductory physics course investigated. These findings can be useful to contemplate strategies to create an equitable and inclusive learning environment to help all students to excel in these physics courses.

How to design research-aligned DEI interventions in physics

Abstract:This article provides resources to design effective diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) interventions in physics settings. It summarizes critiques of DEI interventions and reviews research findings suggesting that DEI interventions show modest but positive benefits. It covers physics-specific concerns around DEI (resistance from skeptical participants, unintended negative consequences for members of minoritized groups). The article then explores six design questions: 1) What are the intended outcomes of the intervention? (with a list of possible outcomes) 2) How will the intervention be justified to participants? 3) Will the intervention be voluntary or required? 4) Who will the participants be? 5) What activities will the intervention consist of? (with suggested activities paired to outcomes) 6) How will you know whether the intervention worked? (with tools used by other researchers to measure particular outcomes, and bonus suggestions for how to carry out publication-worthy evaluations). Each question is explored using research results and recommendations, and illustrated using examples from physics and other STEM settings.

An equitable and effective approach to introductory mechanics

Abstract:Introductory mechanics ("physics 1") is a critical gateway course for students desiring to pursue a STEM career. A major challenge with this course is that there is a large spread in the students' incoming physics preparation, and this level of preparation is strongly predictive of a students' performance. The level of incoming preparation is also largely determined by a student's educational privilege, and so this course can amplify inequities in K-12 education and provide a barrier to a STEM career for students from marginalized groups. Here, we present a novel introductory course design to address such equity challenges in physics 1. We designed the course based on the concept of deliberate practice to give students targeted, scaffolded, and repeated opportunities to engage in research-identified practices and decisions required for effective problem-solving. We used real-world problems, as they carry less resemblance to physics high school problems, and so even the students with the best high school physics instruction have little experience or skill in solving them. The students learned the physics content knowledge they needed in future courses, particularly in engineering, and their problem-solving skills improved substantially. Furthermore, the success in the course was not correlated with incoming physics preparation, in stark contrast to the outcomes from traditional physics 1 courses. These findings suggest that we made physics 1 more equitable by employing a deliberate practice approach in the context of real-world problem-solving.

Abstract:Physics, as a discipline, has long struggled with pervasive stereotypes and biases about who is capable and can excel in it. Physics also ranks among the least diverse among all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, often cultivating and fostering learning environments that lack inclusivity and equity. Moreover, stereotypes about brilliance, inequitable physics learning environments and the overall physics culture not only impact the experiences and outcomes of students who major in physics, but also those from other STEM disciplines who must take physics courses. Here we undertake a narrative review, delving into research concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion within undergraduate physics education. We concentrate on the experiences of women and persons excluded due to their ethnicity or race (PEERs) in physics, aiming to shed light on the alarming current situation. The review begins with a few concrete examples of exclusionary experiences that research shows are common for women in physics and can reduce their interest or motivation to pursue a physics major. Then, we provide our conceptualization of equity in physics learning environments and describe the frameworks informing the perspective taken in the review. We then discuss issues related to inequities in physics learning environments, including but not limited to inequities in academic performance, participation, and persistence in physics, as well as psychological factors such as physics self-efficacy, perceived recognition, social belonging, mindset beliefs, and others. We also review research on factors commonly associated with the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics including the lack of role models, stereotypes associating physics with brilliance, and the overall prototypical culture of physics. We emphasize that addressing these systemic issues in physics requires a holistic approach. We conclude with a list of recommendations for physics departments and instructors on how they can play an important role in transforming the physics culture and making the learning environments equitable and inclusive so that all students can engage in learning physics and enjoy it while feeling supported.

Gender Equity in Physics Labs: A Review

Abstract:This review article provides an overview of research on the topic of gender equity in educational physics labs. As many institutions and instructors seek to evolve or transform physics lab learning, it is important that changes are made that improve equity for all students along multiple axes of identity, including gender. The studies highlighted in this review article describe the existence of complex gender-based differences, e.g., in opportunities to tinker with lab equipment, as well as differences in grades, conceptual understanding, and motivational outcomes across a broad range of lab curricula and contexts. The studies also illustrate and explore social interactions and structures that can impact students' experiences based on their gender identities. Although there has been less scholarship focused on proposals to reduce gender-based inequities in labs, this review article also provides an overview of some relevant proposals as well as associated research results. This overview of research on gender equity in physics labs helps to make clear that future scholarship on equity in physics labs should adopt gender frameworks that allow researchers to transcend binary gender identities and student deficit framing of research results. Likewise, a case is made that future research is needed on equity along other axes of identity, as well as research that accounts for intersectionality of different identities, in the physics lab context.

Breaking Barriers: Investigating Gender Dynamics in Introductory Physics Lab Classes

Abstract:The persistent underrepresentation of women and other gender minorities in physical science fields has been an ongoing concern. This study investigates gender dynamics in introductory physics laboratory courses, specifically exploring whether students of different gender identities exhibit equal inclination and confidence in conducting lab experiments, and whether they face barriers that impact their participation. The study was conducted across three institutions, involving non-physics students enrolled in algebra-based and calculus-based physics courses. Our findings reveal no significant differences in participation levels across genders in various lab activities. However, a subtle yet significant trended was observed: non-male students tend to express greater preferences and comfort levels for note-taking, calculations, and graphing tasks compared to their male counterparts, who gravitated more towards hands-on equipment handling. Although no overt barriers deterring participation based solely on gender were identified, some students reported experiences or witnessed instances where gender dynamics hindered full engagement, such as assumptions about competence or difficulty asserting voices in male-dominated groups. These findings contribute insights into potential gender-based inclinations and experiences within laboratory environments. The results underscore the importance of fostering an inclusive climate that encourages equitable opportunities and engagement from all gender identities in scientific exploration and learning.

Facilitating Problem Solving in a University Undergraduate Physics Classroom: The Case of Students’ Self-Efficacy

Abstract:Real-life and work-related situations of the 21st century present complex problems that require graduates to possess the skills to solve problems in challenging and unfamiliar arenas. Students must therefore have the skills to deal with a wide range of problems. Unfortunately, most students struggle to apply their learning to novel problem-solving situations regardless of their self-efficacy beliefs. It appears particularly significant to investigate this phenomenon in the context of physics education. Using a mixed-methods design within a collaborative learning environment (CLE), this study investigated the factors that influence students’ self-efficacy in solving conceptual mathematical problems in physics. The primary data sources were the science problem solving questionnaire (SPSQ), the self-efficacy rating scale (SERS), and two semi-structured interview items. The results of multi-level regression and descriptive data analysis revealed students’ self-efficacy in solving conceptual mathematical problems in physics (β=.16, p<.01, SE=.065). Among all the self-efficacy variables (e.g., mastery experience, vicarious experience, physical arousal, anxiety, and gender), mastery experiences composed the largest amount of unique variance between male and female students (36% and 21%). The regression coefficient showed a significant difference between male (β=.13, p<.01, SE=.02) and female (β=.34, p<.01, SE=.07). Female students reported slightly higher levels of anxiety (3%) than male students (2%) when completing the SPSQ. In terms of physiological states, females reported 7% and males 1%. The results also showed a strong positive relationship between the instructional approach and student performance (r=.86, p<.001). One major implication of this study is that science educators could include appropriate instruction in delivering content courses to potentially support student teachers at the beginning of their science education studies.
How the physics culture shapes the experiences of undergraduate women physics majors: A comparative case study of three physics departments

Abstract:We present comparative case study of three physics department culture from different institutions using the experiences undergraduate women. The three studies conducted in the United States include Johnson's 2020 study in a small physics department at a small predominantly White liberal arts college, Santana and Singh's 2023 study at a large predominantly White research institution, and Santana and Singh's 2024 study in a medium-sized physics department at a small predominantly White private liberal arts college. Using synergistic frameworks such as Standpoint Theory, Domains of Power, and the Holistic Ecosystem for Learning Physics in an Inclusive and Equitable Environment and reflections from undergraduate women, we aim to understand how those in the position of power, e.g., instructors, have important roles in establishing and maintaining safe, equitable, and inclusive environments for undergraduate students. Their accounts help us contrast the experiences of undergraduate women in physics departments with very different cultures. This comparative analysis is especially important for reflecting upon what can be done to improve the physics culture so that historically marginalized students such as women and ethnic and racial minority students in physics feel supported and thrive. In particular, this comparative case study can be invaluable to understand the positive and negative aspects of the physics culture as they impact undergraduate women majoring in physics within these three departments. This analysis can help other physics departments contemplate strategies to improve the physics culture so that all undergraduate physics majors have validating experiences while navigating their physics journey regardless of their identities.

Abstract:Recruiting and retaining highly qualified physics and physical science teachers is critical for maintaining America's global competitiveness. Unfortunately, only one third of the high school teachers in physics have a degree in physics and an even smaller number of physical science teachers in middle school have a good grasp of the scientific content they teach. Moreover, teachers often lack adequate pedagogical content knowledge to teach science effectively. Here, we discuss the development, implementation, and assessment of a course for science and engineering undergraduates designed to increase awareness and help them develop an interest and a deeper appreciation of the intellectual demands of physics teaching. The course focused on increasing student enthusiasm and confidence in teaching by providing well supported teaching opportunities and exposure to physics education research. The course assessment methods include 1) pre/post-test measures of attitude and expectations about science teaching, 2) self and peer evaluation of student teaching, 3) content-based pre/post-tests given to students who received instruction from the student teachers, and 4) audio-taped focus group discussions in the absence of the instructor and TA to evaluate student perspective on different aspects of the course and its impact.
Unlocking the Benefits of Gender Diversity: How an Ecological-Belonging Intervention Enhances Performance in Science Classrooms

Abstract:Psychological Science, Ahead of Print. Gender diversity signals inclusivity, but meta-analyses suggest that it does not boost individual or group performance. This research examined whether a social-psychological intervention can unlock the benefits of gender diversity on college physics students' social and academic outcomes. Analyses of 124 introductory physics classrooms at a large research institution in the eastern United States (N = 3,605) indicated that in classrooms doing "business as usual," cross-gender collaboration was infrequent, there was a substantial gender gap in physics classroom belonging, and classroom gender diversity had no effect on performance. The ecological-belonging intervention aimed to establish classroom norms that adversity in the course is normal and surmountable. In classrooms receiving the intervention, cross-gender interaction increased 51%, the gender gap in belonging was reduced by 47%, and higher classroom diversity was associated with higher course grades and 1-year grade point average for both men and women. Addressing contextual belongingness norms may help to unlock the benefits of diversity.

Undergraduate physics students' experiences: Exploring the impact of underrepresented identities and intersectionality

Abstract:Historically, physics has been a predominantly male field, with previous literature showing there is little diversity amongst U.S. physics students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Recent research indicates that the lack of underrepresented minorities in physics is partially due to an unwelcoming climate within physics departments, as well as differential experiences during college. Most physics education research that addresses the lack of underrepresented identities within the field has focused on the identities of women and people of color. There has been little research to investigate people with multiple underrepresented identities, including those such as socioeconomic status, first-generation college students, or learning disabilities. Furthermore, there has been even less research conducted to better understand the impacts of the intersection of these underrepresented identities and how it relates to experiences when pursuing a physics major. To address this gap in the literature, our research has investigated undergraduate physics students' experiences, to better understand what factors affect their experiences and how these may differ by the intersection of one's underrepresented identities. To achieve this goal, we conducted a series of in-depth interviews with physics majors at one university to learn more about their college experiences regarding physics. Our findings suggest that there is a disproportionate number of obstacles when pursuing a physics major faced by those with a greater number of underrepresented identities. We conclude that there is a need for more equitable pedagogical practices and departmental policies within the undergraduate physics experience, in addition to, a more "human" approach to mentorship, in order to foster an environment in which students with underrepresented identities can feel supported and thrive academically and professionally.

Investigating society's educational debts due to racism and sexism in student attitudes about physics using quantitative critical race theory

Abstract:The American Physical Society calls on its members to improve the diversity of physics by supporting an inclusive culture that encourages women and Black, Indigenous, and people of color to become physicists. In the current educational system, it is unlikely for a student to become a physicist if they do not share the same attitudes about what it means to learn and do physics as those held by most professional physicists. Evidence shows college physics courses and degree programs do not support students in developing these attitudes. Rather physics education filters out students who do not enter college physics courses with these attitudes. To better understand the role of attitudes in the lack of diversity in physics, we investigated the intersecting relationships between racism and sexism in inequities in student attitudes about learning and doing physics using a critical quantitative framework. The analyses used hierarchical linear models to examine students attitudes as measured by the Colorado learning attitudes about science survey. The data came from the LASSO database and included 2170 students in 46 calculus-based mechanics courses and 2503 students in 49 algebra-based mechanics courses taught at 18 institutions. Like prior studies, we found that attitudes either did not change or slightly decreased for most groups. Results identified large differences across intersecting race and gender groups representing educational debts society owes these students. White students, particularly White men in calculus-based courses, tended to have more expert-like attitudes than any other group of students. Instruction that addresses society's educational debts can help move physics toward an inclusive culture supportive of diverse students and professionals.

Creating a More Equitable Introductory Physics Classroom Through Invitational Phrasing in Question Solicitation

Abstract:Asking questions during class time is one form of participation not commonly employed by members of underrepresented groups in large enrollment college classrooms, even though the form of participation is highly conducive to student learning. To encourage students to ask questions, many instructors initiate open question periods in their lectures with verbal solicitations (i.e., "Questions?"). Although several university centers for teaching and learning, such as at UC Berkeley, and instructor reflections suggest that the scripts of question solicitations impact the frequency of questions returned by students, no literature exists to support this claim. This quasi-experimental scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) study conducted with the Students-as-Partners model, observes the effect of a new solicitation script integrated into an introductory physics lectures to improve question participation from students. While the new solicitation script did not change the total number of questions asked by students in comparison to previous scripts, the number of questions asked by people who likely have gender identities traditionally underrepresented in physics (i.e. all but cis-men) increased significantly.

Abstract:Gender bias, reduced sense of belonging, and lower physics self-efficacy are among the challenges faced by female students who choose to study physics. Prior studies focusing on this underrepresented group have examined the experiences and impacts of formal educational settings, leaving the impact of informal physics programs as a relatively overlooked area. Existing research on the impact of informal physics programs indicates that student facilitators, who help run the programs, can experience positive impacts on their learning and sense of community beyond the formal setting of a classroom or laboratory. In this study we took a first step, narrowing our focus to explore the relation between facilitation of informal physics programs and female students' physics identity, persistence, mindset, and worldview. We analyzed survey responses (32) and interviews (11) collected from undergraduate and graduate female students at a large, land-grant university. Our results, based on self-reported data, showed a statistically significant shift in confidence of choice of major after facilitating informal physics programs. Analysis of interviews indicated a positive effect of facilitation of informal programs on female student interest and motivation with regards to the field of physics, improved performance and competence beliefs, and the development of characteristics indicative of a growth mindset. A semantic network analysis showed statistically significant interdependencies between positive persistence and constructs including growth mindset, important early undergraduate experiences, gender stereotype threat, external recognition, and confidence.
Women in physics in the United States: Reaching toward equity and inclusion

Abstract:The United States has a major deficit in the proportion of women earning degrees in physics, peaking around 20%. To promote excellence and maximize creativity, additional efforts to diversify the physics community must be implemented. Challenges to improving the proportion of female physicists include microaggressions, active discouragement, poor advising or mentoring, inadequate acknowledgement of achievements, sexual harassment, and many others. The latest research on gender bias suggests two main underlying psychological themes that explain much of the behavioral bias: implicit (unconscious) bias and stereotype threat. To ensure that excellence is not compromised, we need to guarantee that our entire population has access to adequate resources and the necessary support structures for success. To fully understand women in physics, we must also examine the many obstacles that women of various identities face in efforts to navigate their academic and professional careers. These identities may be related not only to gender but also to race, ethnicity, language, religion, social class, or sexuality. Increasing women’s participation in physics requires increased access to high school physics courses, funding opportunities to attend college, availability of research opportunities, and access to and support from professional societies. These approaches will enhance the culture in physics, leading to gender equity, social equity, and improved social justice for many people.
Hermione and the Secretary: how gendered task division in introductory physics labs can disrupt equitable learning

Abstract:Abstract Physics labs provide a unique opportunity for students to grow their physics identity and science identity in general since they provide students with an opportunity to tinker with experiments and analyze data in a low-stakes environment. However, it is important to ensure that all students are benefiting from the labs equally and have a positive growth trajectory. Through interviews and reflexive ethnographic observations, we identify and analyze two common modes of work that may disadvantage female students in introductory physics labs. Students who adopt the Secretary archetype are relegated to recording and analyzing data, and thus may miss out on much of the opportunity to grow their physics and science identities by engaging fully in the experimental work. Meanwhile, students in the Hermione archetype shoulder a disproportionate amount of managerial work, and also may not get an adequate opportunity to engage with different aspects of the experimental work that is essential for helping them develop their physics and science identities. We use a physics identity framework to investigate how students under these modes of work may experience stunted growth in their physics and science identity trajectories in their physics lab course. This stunted growth can then perpetuate and reinforce societal stereotypes and biases about who does physics. Our categorization not only gives a vocabulary to discussions about equity in the physics lab, but may also serve as a useful touchstone for those who seek to center equity in efforts to transform physics instruction.

Abstract:We discuss a study in a first year college introductory physics course for physical science and engineering majors that shows that women, on average, feel less recognized by their physics instructors than men as students who can excel in physics. We also discuss how this lack of perceived positive recognition pertaining to physics can adversely affect their self-efficacy and performance in the course. We recommend that physics instructors not be parsimonious in their praise of students and make a conscious effort to positively recognize their students for their effort and progress whenever an opportunity arises. Interviews with female students suggest that instructors should be careful not to give unintended messages to students, e.g., by praising some students for brilliance or intelligence as opposed to their effort because praising a student for brilliance can convey to other students that they do not have what is required to excel in physics. Interviews also suggest that when students ask instructors for help on physics problems, if instructors inadvertently label those problems as "easy", "trivial" or "obvious", it can also make students feel disparaged. The perception of being belittled by these kinds of unintended comments by instructors as well as a lack of positive recognition for good effort and progress have the potential to most adversely impact students from underrepresented groups including women.
