Abstract:Theoretical analysis of transient multilayer heat/mass transfer problems is of much relevance in a variety of engineering systems. While several analytical techniques are already available for solving such problems, such methods are very difficult to implement for problems with more than a few layers. This work presents an exact technique for solving transient multilayer heat/mass transfer problems by representing the properties of the layers as a single function comprising multiple Heaviside step functions. The resulting single-layer problem with spatially-varying properties is solving using the technique of generalized eigenfunction expansion. Using the properties of Heaviside functions, an exact and computationally efficient solution for the transient temperature distribution is derived. Results are found to be in excellent agreement with the standard multilayer separation of variables based technique, while offering improved computational cost and simplicity of implementation. It is shown that the present technique can easily solve problems with a very large of layers. A problem with 50,000 layers is solved as an illustration. The impact of number of layers and thermal diffusivity mismatch in representative problems is analyzed. The novel and exact technique technique developed here advances the field of diffusive transport, with applications in both heat and mass transfer problems.
