Abstract:Based on the intertemporal theoretical framework of Gourinchas and Rey ( 2005), using Vector Error Correction Model and time-varying Space State Model, the paper estimates the return and factors of China’s net foreign assets. The results show that significant negative valuation effects in the change of net foreign assets and its sub-category, “risk assets”, especially at short and medium horizons. The fluctuation of assets prices arising from international financial crisis and appreciation of RMB contribute to the losses of external wealth, implying much wealth outflow to other economies.

Abstract:Based on the structure of statement of cash flow, this paper develops a model to measure the management of cash flows from operating activities (CFO). We verify the model's effectiveness for the sample consists of 6146 firm-years over 1998-2006 of Chinese listed companies. We find that those companies with the incentive of reporting positive CFO or transcending CFO in previous year have much higher magnitude of CFO management. The results indicate that there exists the phenomenon of CFO management for Chinese listed companies, and these management activities are motivated by different incentives.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we expanded upon the current benchmark model of external adjustment and dissected the concept of international financial adjustment into two distinct components: valuation effect and investment income. Our enhanced model, which we refer to as “tri‐channel model,” incorporates three key elements: trade balance, valuation effect, and investment income. Using a consolidated quarterly dataset that encompassed China's balance of payments and international investment positions from 1998 to 2020, we estimated the relative importance of the three newly introduced adjustment channels to China's cyclical external imbalance. We found that the trade balance channel played a major role, accounting for approximately 76 percent of cyclical external adjustment. The contribution of the investment income channel to cyclical external adjustment (21 percent) was much greater than that of the valuation effect channel (3 percent). These findings imply that policy responses to the cyclical external imbalance in China should focus more on the trade balance and investment incomes channels rather than exploiting the valuation effects.

Abstract:International financial integration has accelerated at an unprecedented pace in recent years. External holdings of financial assets and liabilities for both industrial and emerging countries have grown rapidly since the mid-1990s, many times exceeding their respective national income, and traditional surveillance methods using flow data are increasingly incapable of satisfactorily explaining the recent major global economic developments. Using Lane and Milesi-Ferretti's (2006) rich data-set of external positions for 145 countries from 1970 to 2004, this paper selects several issues to highlight the usefulness of balance sheet analysis as a tool for historical understanding and to examine how it can help in an analysis of possible future vulnerabilities. Starting from a global overview, the study looks at China from a comparative angle vis-a-vis the world and the rest of Asia, and finally focuses on the evolution of the external position of China. Although the investigations are preliminary in nature, this paper demonstrates how China has emerged as an important net creditor in an increasingly integrated world and suggests that as China becomes more important globally as a net creditor, the balance sheet analysis of trends and a clearer focus on real total rates of return on external assets, and their risk management, have become increasingly more important over time. It is hoped that this paper will stimulate more academic and policy analysis in this growing area of policy importance.

Abstract:Net foreign assets is an important analytic variable of new open-economy macroeconomics. This paper estimates China's net foreign assets between 1982 and 2004 by means of national accounts and accumulated current account. We find that stock of China's net foreign assets which is characteristic of high risk、 low benefit、weak liquidity、 passive accept is greater than zero. If we distinguish between passive and self-contained creditor right, we find that passive creditor right leads to appreciation of domestic currency and self-contained creditor right can dilute the pressure of appreciation of domestic currency. So the policy solving the problem of RMB appreciation should resort to increase self-contained creditor right or switch from passive creditor right to self-contained.

Abstract:The article selects provincial data from 1991-2008 to construct panel data,uses effect coefficient of investment as indicator to measure capital allocation efficiency,and conducts an empirical analysis of influential factors of capital allocation efficiency such as financial development.The conclusion is that China's capital allocation efficiency continuously declined from 1991 to 2008;except for bank's loan-to-deposit ratio and total volume of imports and exports,which are positively correlated to capital allocation efficiency,other factors such as FDI,government's intervention in the economy,the development of non-state economy and infrastructure are negatively correlated to capital allocation efficiency.

Abstract:Before 2009, the market average price earnings ratio of Chinese firms is significantly higher than that of the U.S. firms, while after 2009, the valuation gap reverses. Using data from 1995 to 2018, we examine the dynamics and sources of valuation differentials between comparable Chinese and U.S. firms. The sectoral composition of the indices plays a minimal role but growth expectations, financial openness, financial development, and (changes in) the investor base, all contribute substantially to the cross-sector and time-series variation of the valuation differentials. Financial openness and changing growth expectations are the most important contributors.

Abstract:The paper investigates the extent of the impact from changes in asset price and risk on corporate investment behaviors as well as the real economy. The results support the unidirectional causality effects from asset price fluctuations on the macro-level. By applying quarterly data of Chinese listed companies, we further find the existence of balance sheet effect on the firm-level, which suggests that the changes in asset prices and risk affect the net asset value, and consequently influence corporate investment decisions. More importantly, the balance sheet effect appears to be much more significant after the implementation of new fair value accounting standards in 2007. The impact on the real economy from asset price risk is found to be more prominent as well.

Abstract:<span>In this study, we explore the relationship between financial structure and the efficiency of capital allocation to determine a scientific and effective approach to transform and upgrade China's financial sector. Using China's provincial data from 2005 to 2018, we detected the threshold effect of financial structure on capital allocation efficiency. We found that financial structure, when using its three agency indicators (credit scale, insurance scale, and stock market size) as threshold variables, and capital allocation efficiency show an inverted 'U' relationship. Moreover, the relationship between financial efficiency, insurance scale, and capital allocation efficiency changes from negative to positive, and the relationship between foreign trade scale and capital allocation efficiency shows a significant negative correlation. This research improves the understanding of the relationship between China's financial structure and the efficiency of capital allocation. Our results show that by optimizing the financial structure through expanding the stock market and the scale of bank credit and appropriately expanding the scale of insurance, more loanable funds will flow into the production sector, and providing certain guarantees can greatly promote improved capital allocation efficiency.</span>

Abstract:This paper analyzes the effect of external factors which include oil price,world interest rates,exchange rate of U.S.dollar and foreign demand on China's business cycles.Estimated structural vector autoregression model with block exogeneity shows that external shocks are an important source of macroeconomic fluctuations in China.Supply and demand shocks play the same role,but the latter is persistent.In the period of financial crisis,demand shock is more important than supply shock.The policy implication is that government should implement expansionary fiscal policy to replace declining private investment in order to stimulate domestic demand and mitigate permanent shock of foreign demand to economy.
An Empirical Study about the Effects of the Structure of Foreign Exchange Capital Flows on the REER in China

Abstract:Real effective exchange rate(REER) is an important symbol of a country's international competitiveness. Different kinds of capital flows may have different effects on REER.This paper analyzes the mechanics of such effects,and makes an empirical analysis on REER of RMB.The results show that aggregative capital flows have negative effect on REER of RMB,but foreign direct investments have a positive effect on the REER significantly, while investment income and private remittances lead to REER appreciation.On the basis of these results, the paper suggests that FDI with high-technology should be increased and their imports should be encouraged, which helps to improve our competitiveness and balance the current account.Meanwhile,the supervision systems should be improved to control and manage cross-board capital flows.

Abstract:From the theory of wealth effect, the paper analyzes the fluctuations of China financial asset＇s price affecting the Current Account using E - G Cointegration test and Granger test. The conclusion is that since there are the China stock market＇s features and the financial constraints, the wealth effect is not so apparent. Rising of the stock＇ price led appreciation of the real exchange rate, while the uncompleted pass - through effect is existed, surpluses of the Current Account increase. To improve the wealth effect, the China capital market should be developed stably, and the private consume should be expanded to get down the trade surpluses~ Because revaluation of RMB cannot change the trade imbalance, China shouldn＇t have RMB revalued.
Framing Effects in the Chinese Stock Market: A Test of New Measurement to Firm-Special Behavioral Characteristic

Abstract:This paper provides a measurement of framing effects in the stock market by using actual market open trading data, and provide a test of this new firm-special behavioral characteristic. We adopt univariate and bivariate portfolio-level analyses with seminal rational and behavioral factors, to demonstrate that framing effects which we defined is indeed a new firm-special behavioral characteristic. Additionally, we find that there is a strong negative relation between framing effects and one-month-ahead excess returns. Framing effects is stochastic with no persistence feature. Stocks with higher framing effects are more likely to be held by retail investors, and the role of framing effects is more important in the boom macroeconomic conditions than in the recessions. And the investment strategy based on framing effects can achieve an excellent performance.

Abstract:The Fama-French three-factor asset pricing formula is applied to the Chinese A-share markets: Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges (SSE and SZSE). The benchmark explanatory returns—value and size premiums are constructed and adopted in the cross-sectional regressions. Market beta has no explanatory power. There are some evidences of the value effect only for the SSE. No significant size effect was found. The results are robust with or without the influences of the exchange rate reform and the recent financial crisis. The model works better in general for the SSE than for the SZSE, regardless of the specifications. There may well be different fundamental forces in the two markets. The pricing regularities pervasive in most equity markets do not explain the Chinese markets sufficiently well.

Abstract:This paper empirically studies the relationship between the governance mechanisms and the market valuation of publicly listed firms in China. The authors construct measures for corporate governance mechanisms and measures of market valuation for all publicly listed firms on the two stock markets in China by using data from the firm s annual reports. They then investigate how the market-valuation variables are affected by the corporate governance variables while controlling for a number of factors commonly considered in market valuation analysis. A corporate governance index is also constructed to summarize the information contained in the corporate governance variables. The index is found to have statistically and economically significant effects on market valuation. The analysis indicates that investors pay a significant premium for well-governed firms in China, benefiting firms that improve their governance mechanisms.
A Structural Analysis of the Causes of Short-term Cross Border Capital Flow in China——An Empirical Study Based on VAR Model

Abstract:This paper sets up a VAR model and makes some empirical study on the interactions between short-term capital flow(SCF) and other variables like exchange rate,interest rate and asset prices,employing such techniques as Impulse Response and Variance Decomposition.The research finds out that RMB exchange rate and real estate prices contribute to SCF comparatively more than other factors.Therefore a rational expectation on RMB exchange rate,as well as a relatively stable real estate market,is currently the key point in coping with hot money inflows and outflows.

Abstract:We construct size and value factors in China. The size factor excludes the smallest 30% of firms, which are companies valued significantly as potential shells in reverse mergers that circumvent tight IPO constraints. The value factor is based on the earnings-price ratio, which subsumes the book-to-market ratio in capturing all Chinese value effects. Our three-factor model strongly dominates a model formed by just replicating the Fama and French (1993) procedure in China. Unlike that model, which leaves a 17% annual alpha on the earnings-price factor, our model explains most reported Chinese anomalies, including profitability and volatility anomalies.

Abstract:This study uses the network topology of variance decompositions to investigate the connectedness of four assets (stocks, bonds, foreign exchange and commodities) across five countries (US, EU, UK, Japan and China). We find that connectedness to and from the Chinese asset markets increased significantly from 2013 to 2018, which reveals that Chinese assets have gradually become integrated into the global economy. We also investigate the volatility connectedness in economically fragile periods and find that the Chinese market acted as a transmitter of volatility in the 2015 Chinese stock crash. This finding is potentially essential to modern risk measurement and management.

Abstract:In this study, we examine the relation between stock misvaluation and expected returns in China's A-share market. We measure individual stocks' misvaluation based on their pricing deviation from fundamental values, following Rhodes-Kropf et al. (2005. J. Finan. Econ. 77 (3), 561) and Chang et al. (2013. J. Bank Finance, forthcoming), and find that the measure has strong and robust return predictive power in the Chinese market. We further form a misvaluation factor and find that misvaluation comovement and systematic misvaluation exist in the Chinese market. A comparison of our results with those of Chang et al. (2013. J. Bank. Finance, forthcoming) reveals that the misvaluation effect is much stronger in the Chinese market than in the U.S market This evidence is consistent with the notion that the Chinese market is much less efficient than the U.S. market Finally, we show that the return predictive power of misvaluation has weakened since China launched its split-share structure reform in 2005, which could result from the fact that the reform helps to promote market efficiency. Equity Market Impact Modeling: an Empirical Analysis for the Chinese Market

Abstract:Market impact has become a subject of increasing concern among academics and industry experts. We put forward a price impact model which considers the heteroscedasticity of price in the time dimension and dependency between permanent impact and temporary impact. We discuss and derive the extremum of the expectation of permanent impact and realized impact by constructing several special trading trajectories. Given our use of a large trade and quote tick records of 17,213,238,343 compiled from the Chinese stock market, the model assessment ultimately suggest that our model is better than Almgren's model. Interestingly, the result of random effect analysis indicates the parameter $\alpha$, which is the exponent of the impact function, is a constant with a value of around 0.7 across all stocks. Our model and empirical result would give academia some insight of mechanism of Chinese market, and can be applied to algorithm trading.
