Abstract:Previous calculations of the dielectric and optical properties of 2D materials often overlooked or circumvented the influence of vacuum spacing introduced in periodic calculations, which gave rise to mispredictions of the intrinsic properties of 2D materials or merely qualitative results. We first elucidate the relationship between the vacuum spacing and the dielectric and optical properties of 2D materials in periodic calculations, and then bring forward an effective method to accurately predict the dielectric and optical properties of 2D materials by restoring the intrinsic dielectric functions of 2D materials independent of the additional vacuum spacing. As examples, the intrinsic dielectric and optical properties of ultrathin h-BN and MoS2 from monolayer to pentalayer, including dielectric functions, optical absorption coefficients, refraction indexes, reflectivities, extinction coefficients, and energy loss functions, have been calculated by our method. Our calculations reveal that the out-of-plane optical dielectric constants, static refraction indexes, and static reflectivities of 2D h-BN and MoS2 increase as the number of layers increases, while the in-plane counterparts remain unchanged. Excitonic frequency-dependent optical properties of h-BN and MoS2 from monolayer to bulk are also calculated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation and show strong anisotropy. In better agreement with experimental results than previous calculations, the presented method demonstrates enormous potential to investigate the dielectric and optical properties of other 2D materials extensively and quantitively.

Abstract:We present a simple first-principles Fourier approach to the calculation of the effective dielectric constant of periodic composites. The method involves the solution of the inhomogeneous Maxwell equations, in which the spatially dependent dielectric constant \ensuremath{\epsilon}(r) is represented by its Fourier components and the resulting field equations are solved in the wave-vector domain. This approach avoids the matching of boundary conditions along the material interfaces inherent in the traditional boundary-value approach, thus offering generality and simplicity for handling periodic systems with arbitrary unit-cell geometries. Application of the approach is illustrated by two examples, and the results are compared with known solutions.
Electro-optic properties from ab initio calculations in two-dimensional materials

Abstract:Electro-optic (EO) effects relate the change of optical constants by low-frequency electric fields. Thanks to the advent of Density Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT), the EO properties of bulk three-dimensional (3D) materials can now be calculated in an ab initio way. However, the use of periodic boundary conditions in most Density Functional Theory codes imposes to simulate two-dimensional (2D) materials using slabs surrounded by a large layer of vacuum. The EO coefficients predicted from such calculations, if not rescaled properly, can severely deviate from the real EO properties of 2D materials. The present work discusses the issue and introduces the rescaling relationships allowing to recover the true EO properties.

Improved HIE-FDTD Method for Simulating Thin Layer Structure in Linear Dispersive Media

Abstract:To accurately simulate the thin layer of linear dispersive media, an improved 3-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed. The inclusion of a weak conditionally stabilized hybrid implicit–explicit (HIE) FDTD method overcomes the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) condition. In addition, the piecewise linear recursive convolution (PLRC) method enhances the original HIE-FDTD method, and a unified form of the polarization parameter is employed to simplify the model of linear dispersive media. The improved method reduces computational memory requirements and enhances computational efficiency. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method when compared with traditional FDTD and the original HIE-FDTD methods. Furthermore, the proposed method can be easily applied to multilayer thin-film systems.

Restoring translational symmetry in periodic all-orbital dynamical mean-field theory simulations

Abstract:Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and its cluster extensions provide an efficient Green's function formalism to simulate spectral properties of periodic systems at the quantum many-body level. However, traditional cluster DMFT breaks translational invariance in solid-state materials, and the best strategy to capture non-local correlation effects within cluster DMFT remains elusive. In this work, we investigate the use of overlapping atom-centered impurity fragments in recently-developed ab initio all-orbital DMFT, where all local orbitals within the impurity are treated with high-level quantum chemistry impurity solvers. We demonstrate how the translational symmetry of the lattice self-energy can be restored by designing symmetry-adapted embedding problems, which results in an improved description of spectral functions in two-dimensional boron nitride monolayers and graphene at the levels of many-body perturbation theory (GW) and coupled-cluster theory. Furthermore, we study the convergence of self-energy and density of states as the embedding size is systematically expanded in one-shot and self-consistent DMFT calculations.

Abstract:In real space Density Functional Theory calculations, the effective potential depends on the electron density, requiring self-consistent iterations and numerous integrals at each step, making the process timeconsuming. In our research, we propose an optimization method to expedite Density Functional Theory calculations for systems with large aspect ratios, such as metallic nanorods, nanowires, or Scanning Tunneling Microscope tips. This method focuses on employing basis set to expand the electron density, Coulomb potential, and exchange-correlation potential. By precomputing integrals and caching redundant results, this expansion streamlines the integration process, significantly accelerating Density Functional Theory computations. As a case study, we have applied this optimization to metallic nanorod systems of various radii and lengths, obtaining corresponding ground-state electron densities and potentials.

Abstract:In this paper we derive a formalism allowing us to separate inter-layer contributions to the polarizability of a periodic array of 2D materials from intra-layer ones. To this aim, effective profile functions are introduced. They constitute a tight-binding-like layer-localized basis involving two lengths, the effective thickness $d$ characteristic of the 2D material and the inter-layer separation $L$. The method permits, within the same formalism, either to compute the single-layer dielectric function from an ab-initio periodic calculation (top-down strategy) or to stack several 2D materials to generate a finite-thickness van der Waals heterostructure (bottom-up strategy).

Abstract:An efficient mixed-potential integral equation formulation is proposed for the analysis of 2-D periodic dielectric objects above the half-space. The spatial-domain half-space Green's functions are obtained from the corresponding spectral-domain Green's functions via the discrete complex image method (DCIM) combined with the matrix pencil method (MP) technique. Then, the Poisson summation formula is used to express the periodic Green's function via a combined summation of spectral and spatial terms. However, the half-space Green's function with 2-D periodicity is commonly expressed as spatial and spectral infinite series that leads to bad convergence. In order to effectively calculate the components of dyadic and scalar mixed-potential half-space periodic Green's functions, a novel acceleration method is proposed. In this work, the modified Ewald method is applied to the spatial series to accelerate periodic Green's functions convergence. Numerical results are provided to validate the efficiency of the proposed method. Compared with the traditional spatial method, the accelerated algorithm has faster convergent speed.

Dynamic Work Distribution for PM Algorithm

Abstract:Although poor for small dynamic scales, the Particle-Mesh (PM) model allows in astrophysics good insight for large dynamic scales at low computational cost. Furthermore, it is possible to employ a very high number of particles to get high mass resolution. These properties could be exploited by suitable parallelization of the algorithm. In PM there are two types of data: the particle data, i.e. position and velocity, which are stored in one-dimensional arrays of N elements, and the grid data, i.e. density and force, which are stored in three-dimensional arrays $M\times M\times M$ in size. Since individual particles can change cell under the action of gravitational force, parallelization is a real challenge on parallel machine and must account for the machine architecture. We have implemented a dynamic work distribution through agenda parallelism. By subdividing the work in small tasks, the implementation is well balanced, scalable and efficient also for clustered particle distributions. In this contribution we describe this efficient, load balanced, parallel implementation of PM algorithm on Cray T3E at CINECA and show its performances on cosmological simulation results.

Abstract:Ultrawideband simulation of negative refraction in bicrystals is important for the design optimization of devices involving such anisotropic media, but it is a nontrivial task, especially when low-order methods are utilized. This work proposes an improved discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method for simulating time-dependent electromagnetic fields for inhomogeneous media with full anisotropic constitutive parameters (full anisotropic media). It employs the electric field intensity E and magnetic flux density B to solve Maxwell's equations. The EB-scheme-based anisotropic Riemann solver and nonconformal mesh are employed for domain decomposition to allow efficient spatial discretization. An unsplit-field Maxwellian multiaxial perfectly matched layer for full anisotropic media is derived and shown to be effective to absorb outgoing waves and suppress the potential late-time instability found in classical PML. In addition, the total-field/scattered-field technique is further studied to allow a nonconformal mesh, vector basis functions, and half-space situation. This newly improved DGTD method is validated with test cases and applied to the negative reflection in YVO4 bicrystal.
Geometrical correction for the inter- and intramolecular basis set superposition error in periodic density functional theory calculations

Abstract:We extend the previously developed geometrical correction for the inter- and intramolecular basis set superposition error (gCP) to periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We report gCP results compared to those from the standard Boys-Bernardi counterpoise correction scheme and large basis set calculations. The applicability of the method to molecular crystals as the main target is tested for the benchmark set X23. It consists of 23 noncovalently bound crystals as introduced by Johnson et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2012, 137, 054103) and refined by Tkatchenko et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2013, 139, 024705). In order to accurately describe long-range electron correlation effects, we use the standard atom-pairwise dispersion correction scheme DFT-D3. We show that a combination of DFT energies with small atom-centered basis sets, the D3 dispersion correction, and the gCP correction can accurately describe van der Waals and hydrogen-bonded crystals. Mean absolute deviations of the X23 sublimation energies can be reduced by more than 70% and 80% for the standard functionals PBE and B3LYP, respectively, to small residual mean absolute deviations of about 2 kcal/mol (corresponding to 13% of the average sublimation energy). As a further test, we compute the interlayer interaction of graphite for varying distances and obtain a good equilibrium distance and interaction energy of 6.75 Å and -43.0 meV/atom at the PBE-D3-gCP/SVP level. We fit the gCP scheme for a recently developed pob-TZVP solid-state basis set and obtain reasonable results for the X23 benchmark set and the potential energy curve for water adsorption on a nickel (110) surface.
Computing total energies in complex materials using charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT

Abstract:We have formulated and implemented a fully charge-self-consistent density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory methodology which enables an efficient calculation of the total energy of realistic correlated electron systems. The density functional portion of the calculation uses a plane wave basis set within the projector augmented wave method enabling study of systems with large, complex unit cells. The dynamical mean field portion of the calculation is formulated using maximally localized Wannier functions, enabling a convenient implementation which is independent of the basis set used in the density functional portion of the calculation. The importance of using a correct double counting term is demonstrated. A generalized form of the standard double counting correction, which we refer to as the $U^\prime$ form, is described in detail and used. For comparison the density functional plus U method is implemented within the same framework including the generalized double counting. The formalism is validated via a calculation of the metal-insulator and structural phase diagrams of the rare-earth nickelate perovskites as functions of applied pressure and A-site rare-earth ions. The calculated density functional plus dynamical mean field results are found to be consistent with experiment. The density functional plus U method is shown to grossly overestimate the tendency for bond-disproportionation and insulating behavior.

A highly accurate procedure for computing globally optimal Wannier functions in one-dimensional crystalline insulators

Abstract:A standard task in solid state physics and quantum chemistry is the computation of localized molecular orbitals known as Wannier functions. In this manuscript, we propose a new procedure for computing Wannier functions in one-dimensional crystalline materials. Our approach proceeds by first performing parallel transport of the Bloch functions using numerical integration. Then a simple analytically computable correction is introduced to yield the optimally localized Wannier function. The resulting scheme is rapidly convergent and proven to produce globally optimal Wannier functions. The analysis in this manuscript can also be viewed as a proof of the existence of exponentially localized Wannier functions in one dimension. We illustrate the performance of the scheme by a number of numerical experiments.

Abstract:The accurate prediction of band gaps and structural properties in periodic systems continues to be one of the central goals of electronic structure theory. However, band gaps obtained from popular exchange-correlation functionals (such as LDA and PBE) are severely underestimated partly due to the spurious self-interaction error (SIE) inherent to these functionals. In this work, we present a new formulation and implementation of Wannier function-derived Fermi-Löwdin (WFL) orbitals for correcting the SIE in periodic systems. Since our approach utilizes a variational minimization of the self-interaction energy with respect to the Wannier charge centers, it is computationally more efficient than the HSE hybrid functional and other self-interaction corrections that require a large number of transformation matrix elements. Calculations on several (17 in total) prototypical molecular solids, semiconductors, and wide-bandgap materials show that our WFL self-interaction correction approach gives better band gaps and bulk moduli compared to semilocal functionals, largely due to the partial removal of self-interaction errors.

\textit{Ab initio} Wannier-representation-based calculations of photocurrent in semiconductors and metals

Abstract:We present a general ab initio method based on Wannier functions using the covariant derivative for simulating the photocurrent in solids. The method is widely applicable to charge/spin DC and AC photocurrent at any perturbation levels in both semiconductors and metals for both linearly and circularly polarized light. This is because the method is theoretically complete (within the relaxation time approximation), that is to say, it includes all intraband, interband and their cross terms. It is also free from the degeneracy issue, i.e., applicable to arbitrary band structures with arbitrary numbers of degenerate bands. We apply the method to various semiconductors and metals, including GaAs, graphene-hBN heterostructure, monolayer WS2, a 2D ferroelectric material - monolayer GeS, bilayer anti-ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 and topological Weyl semimetal RhSi, to simulate their charge and/or spin, DC and/or AC photocurrent. Our theoretical results are in agreement with previous theoretical works. Our numerical tests of GaAs, WS2 and GeS suggest setting the degeneracy threshold in the conventional method as \hbar\Gamma^{2}, with \Gamma^{2} the relaxation rate of the off-diagonal elements of the density matrix between two states with close energies. We find that compared with the conventional Wannier-function-based method using non-dgenerate perturbation theory, the numerical errors of optical susceptibilities of bilayer anti-ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 with the PT symmetry can be reduced by 1-2 orders of magnitude by our method for circularly polarized light. Our method provides a universal computational tool for reliable and accurate predictions of abundant weak-field photocurrent phenomena in disparate materials.

Frequency-dependent dielectric function of semiconductors with application to physisorption

Abstract:The dielectric function is one of the most important quantities that describes the electrical and optical properties of solids. Accurate modeling of the frequency-dependent dielectric function has great significance in the study of the long-range van der Waals (vdW) interaction for solids and adsorption. In this work, we calculate the frequency-dependent dielectric functions of semiconductors and insulators using the $GW$ method with and without exciton effects, as well as efficient semilocal density functional theory (DFT), and compare these calculations with a model frequency-dependent dielectric function. We find that for semiconductors with moderate band gaps, the model dielectric functions, $GW$ values, and DFT calculations all agree well with each other. However, for insulators with strong exciton effects, the model dielectric functions have a better agreement with accurate $GW$ values than the DFT calculations, particularly in high-frequency region. To understand this, we repeat the DFT calculations with scissors correction, by shifting DFT Kohn-Sham energy gap to match the experimental band gap. We find that scissors correction only moderately improves the DFT dielectric function in low-frequency region. Based on the dielectric functions calculated with different methods, we make a comparative study by applying these dielectric functions to calculate the vdW coefficients ($C_3$ and $C_5$) for adsorption of rare-gas atoms on a variety of surfaces. We find that the vdW coefficients obtained with the nearly-free electron gas-based model dielectric function agree quite well with those obtained from the $GW$ dielectric function, in particular for adsorption on semiconductors, leading to an overall error of less than 7% for $C_3$ and 5% for $C_5$. This demonstrates the reliability of the model dielectric function for the study of physisorption.

Density functional calculations of atomic structure, charging effect, and static dielectric constant of two-dimensional systems based on B-splines

Abstract:We have implemented a total-energy minimization scheme to allow for relaxation of atomic positions in density functional calculations for two-dimensional (2D) materials using a mixed basis set. The basis functions consist of products of 2D plane waves in the plane of the material and localized B-splines along the perpendicular direction. By using the mixed basis approach (MBA), we have studied the atomic relaxation and charge polarization of 2D systems under an applied electric field. In contrast to the conventional super-cell approach (SCA) which adopts repeated slabs sandwiched between vacuum regions, MBA makes no requirement of compensating background charge for treating electrically charged 2D systems due to carrier injection. With MBA we can avoid using a periodic sawtooth potential for systems under the applied field as commonly adopted in SCA. Furthermore, we introduced a simple method to determine the out-of-plane dielectric constants of 2D materials without the ambiguity of defining their effective thickness. This is achieved by calculating the linear response in charge polarization to the applied field. Selected 2D systems, including graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides are tested. Our MBA results are consistent with previous SCA calculations when both approaches are equally applicable. However, for charged systems with high carrier density, we find significant deviation from SCA results obtained by imposing artificial charge neutrality condition.

Calculating photonic Green's functions using a non-orthogonal finite difference time domain method

Abstract:In this paper we shall propose a simple scheme for calculating Green's functions for photons propagating in complex structured dielectrics or other photonic systems. The method is based on an extension of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, originally proposed by Yee, also known as the Order-N method, which has recently become a popular way of calculating photonic band structures. We give a new, transparent derivation of the Order-N method which, in turn, enables us to give a simple yet rigorous derivation of the criterion for numerical stability as well as statements of charge and energy conservation which are exact even on the discrete lattice. We implement this using a general, non-orthogonal co-ordinate system without incurring the computational overheads normally associated with non-orthogonal FDTD. We present results for local densities of states calculated using this method for a number of systems. Firstly, we consider a simple one dimensional dielectric multilayer, identifying the suppression in the state density caused by the photonic band gap and then observing the effect of introducing a defect layer into the periodic structure. Secondly, we tackle a more realistic example by treating a defect in a crystal of dielectric spheres on a diamond lattice. This could have application to the design of super-efficient laser devices utilising defects in photonic crystals as laser cavities.
Highly accurate prediction of material optical properties based on density functional theory

Abstract:Theoretical material investigation based on density functional theory (DFT) has been a breakthrough in the last century. Nevertheless, the optical properties calculated by DFT generally show poor agreement with experimental results particularly when the absorption-coefficient ({\alpha}) spectra in logarithmic scale are compared. In this study, we have established an alternative DFT approach (PHS method) that calculates highly accurate {\alpha} spectra, which show remarkable agreement with experimental spectra even in logarithmic scale. In the developed method, the optical function estimated from generalized gradient approximation (GGA) using very high-density k mesh is blue-shifted by incorporating the energy-scale correction by a hybrid functional and the amplitude correction by sum rule. Our simple approach enables high-precision prediction of the experimental {\alpha} spectra of all solar-cell materials (GaAs, InP, CdTe, CuInSe2 and Cu2ZnGeSe4) investigated here. The developed method is superior to conventional GGA, hybrid functional and GW methods and has clear advantages in accuracy and computational cost.
