Abstract:There are many beautiful shapes in nature as flowers, shells, crystal, molecule, spider web, mountains, etc. All of these shapes can be used for reference in the shape design of space structures. Abstract:The trajectory of a spherical object which falls freely in a gravitational field is fixed by its initial position and velocity. However, an object which can control its shape can also control its motion: Except where forbidden by symmetries and their associated conservation laws, a shape-changing (but rocket-free) spacecraft can have complete control over its trajectory. We discuss a general formalism which allows rocket-free maneuvers to be understood without constructing detailed interior models. A spacecraft's interior is abstracted to the specification of a quadrupole moment, and in some cases, it is only a single eigenvalue of that moment which is relevant. For orbits around a spherically-symmetric mass, we show that appropriately varying the relevant eigenvalue allows the energy and eccentricity of an orbit to be increased or decreased and its apsides to be rotated arbitrarily. Strategies are identified which optimize these maneuvers. In other contexts, we show that extended-body effects can be used to stabilize orbits which would otherwise be unstable.

Abstract:Aims. Our research focuses on developing a high-precision and relatively high-resolution shape model of Phobos. Methods. We employed advanced photogrammetric techniques combined with novel computer vision methods to reconstruct the 3D shape of Phobos from nearly 900 Mars Express/SRC and Viking Orbiter images. This research also involved a comparison of the newly developed shape model with previous models to identify differences for future missions. Results. This shape model was used to generate new measurements of the volume (5740 ± 30) km 3, the surface area (1629 ± 8) km 2, and the bulk density (1847 ± 11) kg m −3 of Phobos. By comparing our reconstructed shape model with prior models, we have identified key differences, especially in areas such as the Opik crater and near the Shklovsky crater. These findings highlight critical areas that warrant further investigation in future missions dedicated to exploring Phobos.

Rocket Cratering in Simulated Lunar and Martian Environments

Abstract:With NASA's planned return to the moon and possibly with lunar outposts being formed, repeated landings at the same site will be necessary. Understanding rocket plume interaction with lunar and Martian surfaces is of paramount importance in order to safely land and protect hardware surrounding the landing site. This work will report on results of three small experiments intended to explore plume impingement onto lunar and Martian surfaces: Handheld Observation of Scour Holes (HOOSH), Handheld Angle of Repose Measurements of Lunar Simulants (HARMLuS), and Mars Architecture Team study (MATS). The first two experiments were performed during two sorties of reduced gravity flights. HOOSH was designed to investigate crater formation as a function of gravitational level (lunar and Martian gravity). HARMLuS was designed to measure the Angle of Failure (related to the angle of repose) at lunar and Martian gravity. Both experiments have complex findings indicative of the hysteretic behavior of granular materials, especially resulting from reduced gravity. The MATS experiment was designed to investigate the effects of regolith compaction on the granular mechanics of crater formation. In general, the granular mechanics is a much stronger function of compaction than gravitation acceleration. Crater formation is greatly enhanced at reduced gravity (resulting in much larger craters). The angle of failure of the lunar simulants increases with decreasing gravitational acceleration, and occasionally becomes infinite for some compactions at lunar gravity. The angle of failure also increases with increasing compaction. While compaction does play a role in the time development of crater formation, the asymptotic behavior is largely unaffected.

Abstract:Small body shape has played an important role in the planning of deep space mission to a small body. Considering the numbers and precision, the real solar system small body shapes were constructed before they couldn't satisfy the present requirements. Based on the Gaussian random sphere hypothesis, a small body shape modeling method was proposed. By sorting the surface points into levels, new points completely depended on their higher-level neighbors and specified through fractal theory. Surface features such as craters and rocks were analyzed, and then the addition methods of these two kinds of characters were described. Finally, a set of simulated images based on the constructed shape model were used to illustrate the efficiency of the modeling method.

Abstract:I pose the question of maximal Newtonian surface gravity on a homogeneous body of a given mass and volume but with variable shape. In other words, given an amount of malleable material of uniform density, how should one shape it in order for a microscopic creature on its surface to experience the largest possible weight? After evaluating the weight on an arbitrary cylinder, at the axis and at the equator and comparing it to that on a spherical ball, I solve the variational problem to obtain the shape which optimizes the surface gravity in some location. The boundary curve of the corresponding solid of revolution is given by $\ (x^2+z^2)^3-(4\,z)^2=0\ $ or $\ r(\theta)=2\sqrt{\cos\theta}$, and the maximal weight (at $x=z=0$) exceeds that on a solid sphere by a factor of $\frac35\root3\of5$, which is an increment of $2.6\%$. Finally, the values and the achievable maxima are computed for three other families of shapes.

Abstract:Model rockets have been employed in student projects, but very few papers in aerospace education offer concise summaries of activities at university-course levels. This paper aims to address this gap in the literature. The rockets used by our students reached some 500 m (~1,640 feet) in altitude, deployed a parachute, and spent 2-3 minutes descending to the ground. We present a series of analyses and experiments that students performed in order to predict the flight time, the maximum altitude, and the landing location of these rockets. They wrote computer programs to numerically integrate equations of motion, and experimentally measured input parameters (e.g., the thrust profile and drag coefficients). Once launched, these rockets could not be controlled; targeting the landing location would thus mean tilting the launch rail to a required angle. The largest source of error in landing location came from the difficulty in modeling wind velocities. Also discussed in this paper are the infrared spectroscopy and the extraction experiment as novel additions to model rocket projects.

Abstract:Several physical mechanisms are involved in excavating granular materials beneath a vertical jet of gas. These occur, for example, beneath the exhaust plume of a rocket landing on the soil of the Moon or Mars. A series of experiments and simulations have been performed to provide a detailed view of the complex gas/soil interactions. Measurements have also been taken from the Apollo lunar landing videos and from photographs of the resulting terrain, and these help to demonstrate how the interactions extrapolate into the lunar environment. It is important to understand these processes at a fundamental level to support the on-going design of higher-fidelity numerical simulations and larger-scale experiments. These are needed to enable future lunar exploration wherein multiple hardware assets will be placed on the Moon within short distances of one another. The high-velocity spray of soil from landing spacecraft must be accurately predicted and controlled lest it erosively damage the surrounding hardware.

Abstract:The motion of rockets is part of the study devoted to the motion of variable mass systems. Notably those in which the mass leaves permanently the considered system. Rockets are propelled forward by the reaction force produced by the hot exhausted gases ejected from their tales in the rearward direction. Thus their motion should not violate Newton's third principle of the equality of action and reaction forces during the exhaustion process. Nor should it violate Newton's second law of motion judged by inertial observers. However a close examination of the study of the motion of rockets in a major part of physics textbooks, if not all reveals erroneous determination of the expression of the thrust force that pushes the rocket in the forward direction. The false expression of the thrust force entails a bad effect on obtaining the right differential equation that governs the motion of rockets. This trap induced some prominent physics authors to pretend the in applicability of Newton's second law in such particular cases. Not only that, but they also modified Newton's second law in order to fit their purposes of obtaining the right differential equation, historically known under the name Tsiolkovsky rocket equation. The object of this paper is to give the true expression of the thrust force and to write the differential equation of motion of rockets without any necessity of modification of the classical laws. The paper also delves into the expression of the change of velocity of rockets, and proves that their motion is uniformly accelerated in the early stages of liftoff from the ground at condition of constant velocity of expulsion of hot gases from their nozzles.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the advantages and challenges of utilizing Fission Fragment Rocket Engines (FFREs) to dramatically reduce transit time in space travel, for example, traveling to Mars. We discuss methods to decrease the size and weight of FFREs. These include utilizing metallic deuterides as moderators, driving the engines with electron beam bremsstrahlung, and operating the FFREs as subcritical assemblies, not as nuclear reactors. We discuss these and other new innovations based upon improved materials and technology that may be integrated into a revolutionary nuclear rocket technology.

Abstract:For decades, the dream of unfettered space travel, free from the constraints of traditional chemical rockets, has captivated humanity's imagination. The realization of an interstellar faring civilization hinges on breakthroughs in space propulsion that transcend the limitations imposed by current chemical rocket technology. Scientists explore the intriguing realm of propellantless propulsion, a futuristic vision for space exploration that transcends the limitations of conventional propulsion. The article explores the historical roots of this field, including controversial concepts like the EmDrive and the Biefeld-Brown effect. It further examines theoretical frameworks encompassing asymmetric electrostatic pressure generation and even spacetime warping. However, the quest for reactionless motion faces a fundamental hurdle – the law of conservation of momentum. Efforts to circumvent this law involve manipulating the enigmatic quantum vacuum or creating asymmetric thrust generation within the spacecraft itself. While challenges like precise microthrust measurement, immense energy demands and material limitations persist, the potential rewards are truly transformative. Interplanetary voyages completed in significantly shorter timeframes and drastically reduced launch costs could be attained. Propellantless drives hold the potential to overcome numerous obstacles that current chemical propulsion cannot. This article underscores the critical need for continued exploration through rigorous experimental verification, the development of robust theoretical frameworks and collaborative efforts between physicists, engineers and materials scientists. This continued exploration necessitates the exploitation of existing high-efficiency solar collection technologies. Furthermore, investigations into innovative approaches, such as those utilizing metamaterials, could be pivotal in unlocking the transformative potential of propellantless propulsion systems.

Abstract:Current rocket technology can not send the spaceship very far, because the amount of the chemical fuel it can take is limited. We try to use dark matter (DM) as fuel to solve this problem. In this work, we give an example of DM engine using dark matter annihilation products as propulsion. The acceleration is proportional to the velocity, which makes the velocity increase exponentially with time in non-relativistic region. The important points for the acceleration are how dense is the DM density and how large is the saturation region. The parameters of the spaceship may also have great influence on the results. We show that the (sub)halos can accelerate the spaceship to velocity $ 10^{- 5} c \sim 10^{- 3} c$. Moreover, in case there is a central black hole in the halo, like the galactic center, the radius of the dense spike can be large enough to accelerate the spaceship close to the speed of light.

Abstract:Small planetary bodies usually have irregular shapes. If they are large enough to be heated to a partial melting status, the deforming force of gravity could overcome the internal forces and make the shape transfigure from potato-like to spherical. We have developed a model to calculate the thermal history of a planetoid and apply the model to asteroids, since ample evidence has shown that many asteroids could have undergone differentiation. After revealing the relation between the shape and the ratio of the melt part, we also examine the surface roughness of these asteroids and suggest that 280 km would be a critical radius for an asteroid to develop a virtually globular contour.

Abstract:Supersonic retropropulsion is a key technology for next-generation rockets and necessary to land large payloads for human-scale missions. The recent decade has demonstrated the capability to land rockets on Earth as well as the reuse of said rockets to reduce cost. This capability thus far has relied on flight tests. For future missions to Mars, testing requires many compromises, as flight tests are not possible on Earth. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are critical to the design and analysis of extraplanetary retropropulsion configurations. This work investigates a single-engine configuration that was previously tested in a wind tunnel using an air medium. The configuration is scaled to Martian conditions. Various gas modeling approaches are employed, including pure [Formula: see text], pseudo-species, and a chemical mechanism to model the afterburning of the engine plumes in the Martian atmosphere. The scale-resolving CFD simulations are compared to the simulation and experimental data of the air configuration. The lower-fidelity gas modeling simulations are also compared against the higher-fidelity chemical mechanism simulations to examine the impact of gas models on plume flowfields and forces and moments that are of interest to vehicle design.

Abstract:Context. We investigate the hydrostatic shape and gravitational potential coefficients of self-gravitating and rotating bodies large enough to have undergone internal differentiation and chemical stratification. Quantifying these properties under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium forms the basis for interpreting shape and gravity data in terms of interior structure and infer deviations from hydrostaticity that can bring information on the thermal and chemical history of the objects. Aims. The main purpose is to show the importance of developing the reference hydrostatic shape for relatively fast rotating bodies up to third order to reach an accuracy of a few tens of meters. This paper especially focuses on Ceres, for which high-resolution shape data are being obtained by the Dawn spacecraft, with a projected accuracy better than 200 m/pixel. Methods. To improve the accuracy on the determination of geodetic parameters, we numerically integrated Clairaut’s equations of rotational equilibrium expanded up to third order in a small parameter m, the geodetic parameter. Results. Previous studies of Ceres have been based on shape models developed to first order. However, we show that the first-order theory underestimates (a−c) (where a and c are the equatorial and polar radii) by 1.8 km, which leads to underestimating the extent of mass concentration and is insufficient to interpret the upcoming observations by Dawn space mission. Instead, by using the third-order theory, we obtain an accuracy of 25 meters that is better than the accuracy expected from Dawn. Then, we derive the following geodetical quantities: flattening and other shape parameters, gravitational potential coefficients, and moments of inertia, by using the Ceres models constrained by observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based adaptive optics telescopes. The difference in equatorial and polar radii for a large parametric space of interior models is investigated, and the large (a−c) corresponds to a model with a low density contrast. Conclusions. This type of modeling will also prove instrumental to infer non-hydrostatic contributions to Ceres’ shape that are to be measured by Dawn.

Abstract:To rapidly design three dimensional low-thrust safe trajectories for spacecraft orbit transfer and rendezvous problems, an analytic shape-based approach is proposed. Unlike some existing analytic methods, in which a fixed shape of the trajectory is assumed, the proposed trajectory model in this paper is based on the initial and target orbit elements, through which the fitting ability for the trajectory shape is effectively improved. Additionally, the trajectory safety is guaranteed by using the shaping function. Moreover, the proposed approach can avoid computationally intensive numerical integration of the motion equations. The low-thrust trajectories designed by the proposed method can be also used to provide initial guess for more-accurate numerical trajectory optimization. Extensive numerical simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
