Abstract:The smaller version of “smallsats” known as “femtosats,” “picosats,” and “nanosats” or “cubesats” was discussed in the preceding chapter. These very small spacecraft, plus small hosted payloads, or tiny space experiments that are carried out in the Nanoracks experimental platform on board the International Space Station provide a gateway into space that can allow students to conduct experiments without huge multimillion dollar investments.The commercial uses of “smallsats” for 1-unit cubesats and below are extremely rare. Increasingly, there are commercial systems, however, that are using 3U cubesats particularly for automatic identification services (AIS) and for messaging, machine to machine (M2M), and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. The other prime commercial applications by 3U and above cubesats are for remote sensing with lower resolution in cases where rapid updates of information and data analytics are the prime purpose of a small satellite constellation.Thus small space units such as cubesats and even smaller pocketqubes are typically used for student or scientific experiments or used for proof of concept for a much larger follow-on activity. This means that most commercial networks are using the larger class of microsats and minisats for their constellation designs. Thus this chapter is focused on the burgeoning growth of “smallsats” for commercial networks and the “NewSpace” or “Space 2.0” constellations that employ larger spacecraft. These satellites are still far smaller than the typical commercial and space agency research spacecraft that has grown to the size that ranges from 1000 Kg on up many thousands of Kgs.There is now a huge and rapidly growing new commercial market for what are called “microsats” (e.g., 10–100 kg or 22–220 pounds) and “minisats” (e.g., 100–500 kg or 220–1100 pounds). Others, however, define minisats as being from 100 kg up to 1000 kg (or 220–2200 pounds). These types of “smallsats” unlike those discussed in the preceding chapter are typically being deployed for commercial missions and applications and most often for large constellations to create a global service. Space agencies, military agencies, and established research organizations are finding that these smaller but highly capable satellites can be used for scientific exploration in orbit and in deep space and for proof of concept for larger missions.These microsatellites and minisats are most often launched in low Earth orbit (LEO) but not exclusively so. GEO-orbiting spacecraft and deep space missions can also use this type of “smallsat” that are performing ever more complex and difficult missions. Even radarsats that require substantial power levels because they require “active sensing” have been deployed as constellations using this type of smallsat such as Canada’s most recent Radarsat Constellation.This chapter provides the background of the earlier “smallsat” constellations that failed financially, the resurgence in the technologies, financial support, markets for these new “smallsat” systems, and the regulatory and other challenges still to be faced in this highly dynamic market that is still in what might be considered a second shakeout phase of development.
Lifetime Testing, Redundancy, Reliability, and Mean Time to Failure

Abstract:The environment of outer space is quite hostile to the many spacecraft that are now deployed in Earth orbit and beyond. There are many hazards in terms of severe thermal gradients, space weather from the sun and beyond, and intense radiation from the Van Allen belts as well as strong magnetic forces. Today, application satellites also must plan to cope with man-made hazards that arise from space debris, RF interference (RFI), and other possible hazards such as spurious commands. There are also risks associated with the launch and deployment of satellites since there are strong “g forces” during launch and difficulties that can arise from the unfolding, roll-out, or explosive or spring-loaded extension of solar arrays, antennas, and other systems that must be deployed in space in response to remote command. This complex series of hazards requires extensive testing of application spacecraft that are deployed into Earth orbit with the hope of extended lifetime operation. These hazards and difficulties of space operations increase the importance of lifetime testing. It also demands the design of application satellites to be rugged and to have reasonable levels of redundancy so that service can be maintained if various components happen to fail. In the case of application satellites, rugged design, redundancy, and demanding lifetime testing of applications satellites and its subsystems and components are of utmost importance simply because there is little opportunity for repair or refurbishment operations in space. Without these precautions, a very expensive application satellite that requires perhaps an even larger investment to launch it into space could be lost to the satellite operator and thus require replacement at very high cost either to the satellite operator or to the companies that have insured the launch and operation of the satellite.In recent years, there has been an alternative approach taken in terms of deployment of large constellations of small satellites in space as an alternative to a few large satellites designed and tested for long life. These small satellites have been built at much lower cost using off-the-shelf components and most frequently by advanced manufacturing techniques that include 3-D printing. These have frequently been launched as “piggyback” missions and thus at much lower cost.Networks such as Skybox Imaging, Planet Labs, PlanetiQ, Dauria Aerospace, Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems, NovaWurks, and GeoOptics have all emphasized this approach that involves miniaturization, low-cost satellites, and associated modest launch costs over larger and more capable satellites that subjected to extensive lifetime testing prior to launch. This new paradigm is also now being tested by new communications satellite operators such as OneWeb that proposed to nearly 800 mass-produced satellites plus spares to create a network optimized for Internet-based services, and a megaLEO constellation by SpaceX might ultimately involve thousands of small satellites. For this type of alternative design architecture, the replacement of failed satellites with a ready supply of spares is the key to achieving system reliability. This approach is seen as the alternative to stringent testing and flight-qualified components with proven long-life capabilities in a stringent space environment.The following text discusses all of these strategies for coping with and minimizing risk for the satellite application industry although the much greater emphasis is on the stringent reliability and long-life design approach, since the ventures employing a constellation of small satellites largely depend on a robust sparing effort.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The development of oceanography and meteorology has greatly benefited from satellite-based data of Earth’s atmosphere and ocean. Traditional Earth observation missions have utilised Sun-synchronous orbits with repeat ground tracks due to their advantages in visible and infrared wavelengths. However, diversification of observation wavelengths and massive deployment of miniaturised satellites are both enabling and necessitating new kinds of space missions. This paper proposes several unconventional satellite orbits intended for use in, but not limited to, Earth observation. This ‘toolbox’ of orbits and taxonomy thereof will thus support the definition of design requirements for the individual satellites in nano-satellite constellations developed by national space agencies, industries and academia.

Abstract:The rise of the commercial space industry has resulted in the development of mega‐constellations that promise to provide global broadband. These constellations capitalize on advancements in technology, improved modeling capabilities, and reductions in launch cost. One of the significant open questions is whether these constellations will significantly increase access for uncovered and underserved communities, in addition to serving existing markets. This paper analyzes which constellation characteristics provide the best global coverage at the lowest operational cost. First, we present the demand model that assesses the number of under‐served and uncovered users in a given region. Then, we present a genetic algorithm used to identify potential constellations. Finally, we conclude by identifying which characteristics are the most promising for broadband constellations, as well as predictions of how the market will develop in the coming years. Our analysis has found that geostationary (GEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations have the highest likelihood of profitability. LEO networks are on average 27% more expensive, but if designed wisely, they can be competitive. Our work shows that there are diminishing returns with large constellations, and that it is more cost effective to have a small number of highly capable satellites, rather than many low complexity satellites. Key technologies like high frequency bands and miniaturization of components can lead to further cost reductions and increase the competitiveness of LEO constellations. This paper analyzes which constellation characteristics provide the best global coverage at the lowest operational cost. Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:The number of small satellites has grown dramatically in the past decade from tens of satellites per year in the mid-2010s to a projection of tens of thousands in orbit by the mid-2020s. This presents both problems and opportunities for observational astronomy. Small satellites offer complementary cost-effective capabilities to both ground-based astronomy and larger space missions. Compared to ground-based astronomy, these advantages are not just in the accessibility of wavelength ranges where the Earth's atmosphere is opaque, but also in stable, high precision photometry, long-term monitoring and improved areal coverage. Astronomy has a long history of new observational parameter spaces leading to major discoveries. Here we discuss the potential for small satellites to explore new parameter spaces in astrophysics, drawing on examples from current and proposed missions, and spanning a wide range of science goals from binary stars, exoplanets and solar system science to the early Universe and fundamental physics.
Optimal Ground Station Selection for Low-Earth Orbiting Satellites

Abstract:This paper presents a solution to the problem of optimal ground station selection for low-Earth orbiting (LEO) space missions that enables mission operators to precisely design their ground segment performance and costs. Space mission operators are increasingly turning to Ground-Station-as-a-Service (GSaaS) providers to supply the terrestrial communications segment to reduce costs and increase network size. However, this approach leads to a new challenge of selecting the optimal service providers and station locations for a given mission. We consider the problem of ground station selection as an optimization problem and present a general solution framework that allows mission designers to set their overall optimization objective and constrain key mission performance variables such as total data downlink, total mission cost, recurring operational cost, and maximum communications time-gap. We solve the problem using integer programming (IP). To address computational scaling challenges, we introduce a surrogate optimization approach where the optimal station selection is determined based on solving the problem over a reduced time domain. Two different IP formulations are evaluated using randomized selections of LEO satellites of varying constellation sizes. We consider the networks of the commercial GSaaS providers Atlas Space Operations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Ground Station, Azure Orbital Ground Station, Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT), Leaf Space, and Viasat Real-Time Earth. We compare our results against standard operational practices of integrating with one or two primary ground station providers.

Looking out for a sustainable space

Abstract:October 1957, and the successful launch of Sputnik 1 into Earth orbit, marked the dawn of the Space Age. The first of the 'fellow travellers' - humanity's first artificial satellite - orbited for a mere three months before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, though its mission paved the way for an era of exploration that has endured to the present day. For many, a world without satellites would be a difficult one to imagine. As a society, we have become reliant on them for a vast array of services and applications. With a divine view of large swathes of the Earth's surface, and the ability to relay signals around its curvature, satellites have enabled the fast transfer of data on a global scale, bypassing the challenges associated with ground-based broadcasting, long-distance wiring, and so on. Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) satellites have revolutionised transportation by land, air, and sea, while weather satellites enable scientists to monitor and warn of large-scale phenomena as they develop in near real-time. Satellites have extended the frontiers of observation: looking outwards, astronomers are able to circumvent the Earth's atmosphere to look deeper into the cosmos than ever before; looking inwards, patterns and processes that feed into general circulation models can be monitored on a range of timescales, improving our understanding of climate change. Satellites, and the services they provide, are not going to disappear any time soon. That said, threats to satellite safety do exist, and it is important that they be addressed as soon as possible to avoid long-lasting damage to operations in the space domain. Nearly sixty-five years on from the advent of human activity in space, I chart the evolution of the orbital debris environment and review latest efforts to make space operations more sustainable.

Abstract:Small satellites (smallsats) provide low-cost access to space and have historically been used for flight technology demonstrations and limited-function space science activities. Novel antenna technologies have enabled high-performance smallsat telecommunications, science in Earth orbit, and the first CubeSat mission to deep space. In the past five years, technologists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have designed, tested, and successfully flown these innovative and enabling smallsat antennas. This article describes these innovations and their impact on smallsat performance for recent and future NASA missions.

Spatial and Temporal Sampling Properties of a Large GNSS-R Satellite Constellation

Abstract:Using large constellations of smallsats, mission designers can improve sampling density and coverage. We develop performance metrics that characterize key sampling properties for applications in numerical weather prediction and optimize orbit design parameters of the constellation with respect to those metrics. Orbits are defined by a set of Keplerian elements, and the relationship between those elements and the spatial and temporal coverage metrics are examined in order to maximize global and zonal (latitude-dependent) coverage. Additional optimization is performed by dividing a constellation into multiple orbit planes. An iterative method can be applied to this design process to compare the performance of current and previous designs. The main objective of this work is the design of optimized configurations of satellites in low Earth orbiting constellations to maximize the spatial and temporal sampling and coverage provided by its sensors. The key innovations developed are a new cost function which measures the temporal sampling properties of a satellite constellation, and the use of it together with existing cost functions for spatial sampling to design satellite constellations that optimize performance with respect to both performance metrics.

Abstract:Recent breakthroughs in technology have led to a thriving "new space" culture in low-Earth orbit (LEO) in which performance and cost considerations dominate over resilience and reliability as mission goals. These advances create a manifold of opportunities for new research and business models but come with a number of striking new challenges. In particular, the size and weight limitations of low-Earth orbit small satellites make their successful operation rest on a fine balance between solar power infeed and the power demands of the mission payload and supporting platform technologies, buffered by on-board battery storage. At the same time, these satellites are being rolled out as part of ever-larger constellations and mega-constellations. Altogether, this induces a number of challenging computational problems related to the recurring need to make decisions about which task each satellite is to effectuate next. Against this background, GomSpace and Saarland University have joined forces to develop highly sophisticated software-based automated solutions rooted in optimal algorithmic and self-improving learning techniques, all this validated in modern nanosatellite networked missions operating in orbit.
De-orbiting Small Satellites Using Inflatables

Abstract:Small-satellites and CubeSats offer a low-cost pathway to access Low Earth Orbit at altitudes of 450 km and lower thanks to miniaturization and advancement in reliability of commercial electronics. However, at these low altitudes, atmospheric drag has a critical effect on the satellite resulting in natural deorbits within months. As these small systems further increase in reliability and radiation tolerance they will be able readily access higher orbits at altitudes of 700 km and higher, where atmospheric drag has little to no effect. This requires alternative technologies to either de-orbit these small spacecrafts at the end of life or move them to a safe parking orbit. Use of propulsion and de-orbit mechanisms have been proposed, however they require active control systems to be trigged. Other typical de-orbit mechanism relies on complex mechanisms with many moving parts. In this work, we analyze the feasibility of using inflatable de-orbit devices that are triggered passively when a spacecraft is tumbling. Inflatables have already been proposed as hypersonic deccelerators that would carry large payload to the Martian surface. However, these systems are quite complex and need to withstand high-forces, temperature and enable survival of a critical payload. Furthermore, inflatables have been proposed as communication antennas and as structures using a class of sublimates that turn into gas under the vacuum of space. These inflatables system are relatively simple and does not require a specialized inflation system.

Abstract:There is ever growing demand for satellite constellations that perform global positioning, remote sensing, earth-imaging and relay communication. In these highly prized orbits, there are many obsolete and abandoned satellites and components strewn posing ever-growing logistical challenges. This increased demand for satellite constellations pose challenges for space traffic management, where there is growing need to identify the risks probabilities and if possible mitigate them. These abandoned satellites and space debris maybe economically valuable orbital real-estate and resources that can be reused, repaired or upgraded for future use. On-orbit capture and servicing of a satellite requires satellite rendezvous, docking and repair, removal and replacement of components. Launching a big spacecraft that perform satellites servicing is one credible approach for servicing and maintaining next-generation constellations. By accessing abandoned satellites and space debris, there is an inherent heightened risk of damage to a servicing spacecraft. Under these scenarios, sending multiple, small-robots with each robot specialized in a specific task is a credible alternative, as the system is simple and cost-effective and where loss of one or more of robot does not end the mission. Eliminating the need for a large spacecraft or positioning the large spacecraft at safe distance to provide position, navigation and tracking support simplifies the system and enable the approach to be extensible with the latest ground-based sensing technology. In this work, we analyze the feasibility of sending multiple, decentralized robots that can work cooperatively to perform capture of the target satellite as first steps to on-orbit satellite servicing.

System modelling of very low Earth orbit satellites for Earth observation

Abstract:<p>The operation of satellites in very low Earth orbit (VLEO) has been linked to a variety of benefits to both the spacecraft platform and mission design. Critically, for Earth observation (EO) missions a reduction in altitude can enable smaller and less powerful payloads to achieve the same performance as larger instruments or sensors at higher altitude, with significant benefits to the spacecraft design. As a result, renewed interest in the exploitation of these orbits has spurred the development of new technologies that have the potential to enable sustainable operations in this lower altitude range. In this paper, system models are developed for (i) novel materials that improve aerodynamic performance enabling reduced drag or increased lift production and resistance to atomic oxygen erosion and (ii) atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) for sustained drag compensation or mitigation in VLEO. Attitude and orbit control methods that can take advantage of the aerodynamic forces and torques in VLEO are also discussed. These system models are integrated into a framework for concept-level satellite design and this approach is used to explore the system-level trade-offs for future EO spacecraft enabled by these new technologies. A case-study presented for an optical very-high resolution spacecraft demonstrates the significant potential of reducing orbital altitude using these technologies and indicates possible savings of up to 75% in system mass and over 50% in development and manufacturing costs in comparison to current state-of-the-art missions. For a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, the reduction in mass and cost with altitude were shown to be smaller, though it was noted that currently available cost models do not capture recent commercial advancements in this segment. These results account for the additional propulsive and power requirements needed to sustain operations in VLEO and indicate that future EO missions could benefit significantly by operating in this altitude range. Furthermore, it is shown that only modest advancements in technologies already under development may begin to enable exploitation of this lower altitude range. In addition to the upstream benefits of reduced capital expense and a faster return on investment, lower costs and increased access to high quality observational data may also be passed to the downstream EO industry, with impact across a wide range of commercial, societal, and environmental application areas.</p>

Abstract:In recent years small satellites have shifted from being secondary items to dominate the space market thanks to, but not only, the development of the large LEO constellations. For small satellites to be highly effective, particularly when arranged in such constellations, each satellite has to be placed in a specific orbital plane and orbital position. Currently, three main options are available to reach a specific orbit. The first, more straightforward solution is to employ a dedicated launch with a small launch vehicle. Plenty of small launchers are in development around the world (with few already operational); however, their cost per kilogram is predicted to be much higher than for large launchers. The second possibility is the exploitation of a rideshare option, where the satellite is transported by a large launcher together with other payloads on a general predetermined orbit. Afterwards the satellite needs to be transferred to its designed orbit. This can be done in two ways: through the use of a satellite carrier (also called self-propelled dispenser) or with the satellite own propulsion system. In both last cases, the mass transported by the launcher into the release orbit is higher than the final one necessary for the nominal mission, impacting total costs. In this paper these three possibilities are compared considering the need to reach various specific orbits, starting from a different release one in the case of the rideshare options. First of all, the change in velocity for different orbital parameters (altitude, eccentricity, phase, argument of perigee, inclination, RAAN) is computed. Afterwards the propulsion mass budget is calculated. Everything else being equal, it is demonstrated mathematically that a dispenser is inherently less efficient than a group of autonomous satellites, particularly for the RAAN change and a large number of carried satellites. However, it is not always possible or convenient to provide small satellites, particularly the smallest ones (nanosats/cubesats/microsats) with comparable propulsion capabilities of a larger dispenser, making the latter still an attractive option in several situations. A cost analysis also shows that, particularly for sophisticated small satellites, when the final orbit is far from the release one, a dedicated small launch vehicle can be cost competitive with the nominally much cheaper large launcher.

Abstract:Among the recent advances and innovations in satellite communications, Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellite constellations are gaining popularity as a viable option for providing widespread broadband internet access and backhauling services. However, a more complex ground segment with multiple ground stations is necessary due to these satellites' high speeds and low altitudes. The complete dimensioning of the ground segment, including gateway optimal placement and the number of ground access points, remains a relevant open challenge. In this article, we provide an overview of the key factors that shall be considered for NGSO gateway station geographical planning. Subsequently, we propose a ground segment dimensioning approach that combines several criteria, such as rain attenuation, elevation angle, visibility, geographical constraints, and user traffic demands. The operational concept is first discussed, followed by a methodology that combines all these constraints into a single map-grid to select the best position for each gateway. Furthermore, a case study is presented, which demonstrates the performance of the proposed methodology, for one example constellation. Finally, we highlight relevant open challenges and key research directions in this area.

Abstract:The miniaturization of electronic and mechanical components has allowed for an unprecedented downscaling of spacecraft size and mass. Today, spacecraft with a mass between 1 to 10 grams, AttoSats, have been developed and operated in space. Due to their small size, they introduce a new paradigm in spacecraft design, relying on agile development, rapid iterations, and massive redundancy. However, no systematic survey of the potential advantages and unique mission concepts based on AttoSats exists. This paper explores the potential of AttoSats for future space missions. First, we present the state of the art of AttoSats. Next, we identify unique AttoSat characteristics and map them to future mission capabilities. Finally, we go beyond AttoSats and explore how smart dust and nano-scale spacecraft could allow for even smaller spacecraft in the milligram range: zepto- and yocto spacecraft.

Abstract:On-orbit servicing (OOS) presents new opportunities for refueling, inspection, repair, maintenance, and upgrade of spacecraft (s/c). OOS missions for s/c in a geostationary orbit (GEO) are currently underway. However, there are currently no plans for OOS of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) s/c, aside from technology demonstrations, because of their shorter design life and lower cost. Designing OOS systems for LEO constellations differs from that of GEO-based systems; this difference is attributed to LEO's proliferation of satellites, environmental effects (J2 nodal precession, drag), and different constellation patterns. Satellite constellations in LEO are becoming more distributed due to increased access, distributed risk, flexibility, and cost. OOS of s/c may enable the reduction of requirements on subsystems such as safety and the need for redundancy. These requirement reductions will enable lower risks, lower costs, and increased system resilience. This paper analyzes the benefits of OOS in proliferated LEO constellations. Several OOS system architectures are modeled in various scenarios, and we will evaluate the utility tradespace in which OOS is beneficial. OOS provides higher utility over the comparative alternative of using spare satellites in some scenarios. The utility of OOS provides even greater utility when accepting higher failure rates of satellites, which can be mitigated by an OOS system compared to the comparative alternative of orbital spares.
