Abstract:The failures of GEO (Geostationary Orbit) spacecrafts will result in large economic cost and other bad impacts. In this paper, we propose a space robotic servicing concept, and present the design of the corresponding system. The system consists of a 7-DOF redundant manipulator, a 2-DOF docking mechanism, a set of stereo vision and general subsystems of a spacecraft platform. This system can serve most existing GEO satellites, not requiring specially designed objects for grappling and measuring on the target. The serving tasks include: (a) visual inspecting; (b) target tracking, approaching and docking; (c) ORUs (Orbital Replacement Units) replacement; (d) un-deployed mechanism deploying; (e) extending satellites lifespan by replacing its own controller. As an example, the servicing mission of a malfunctioned GEO satellite with three severe mechanical failures is presented and simulated. The results show the validity and flexibility of the proposed system.

Abstract:The geostationary orbit (GEO), a unique satellite orbit of the human beings, is a very precious orbit resource. However, the continuous increasing of GEO debris makes the GEO orbit more and more crowded. Moreover, the failures of GEO spacecrafts will result in large economic cost and other bad impacts. In this paper, we proposed a space robotic servicing system, and developed key pose (position and orientation) measurement and control algorithm. Firstly, the necessity of orbit service in GEO was analyzed. Then, a servicing concept for GEO non-cooperative targets was presented and a universal space robotic servicing system was designed. The system has a 2-DOF docking mechanism, a 7-DOF redundant manipulator and a set of stereo vision, in addition to the traditional subsystems of a spacecraft. This system can serve most existing satellites in GEO, not requiring specially designed objects for grappling and measuring on the target. The servicing contents include: (a) visual inspecting; (b) target tracking, approaching and docking; (c) ORUs (Orbital Replacement Units) replacement; (d) Malfunctioned mechanism deploying; (e) satellites life extension by taking over its control, or re-orbiting the abandoned satellites. As an example, the servicing mission of a malfunctioned GEO satellite with three severe mechanical failures was designed and simulated. The results showed the validity and flexibility of the proposed system.

Abstract:This paper presents the Dual Arm Free-flying Space Robotic System (DAFSR) which is developed for On-Orbit Servicing to GEO stationary satellite. DAFSR consists of free-flying platform, target detecting system and two space manipulators. In this paper, the mission schedule and the design of the system are described in detail, as well as the target detecting system and the ground tele-operational system. The planned missions include on-orbit target chasing and approaching, flying around and inspection, manipulator capturing and "soft" docking, robotic maintenance. This paper introduces the components and key techniques of DAFSR.

Abstract:Concerning the onboard autonomous mission planning problem of high and low orbiting agile Earth observation satellites (AEOSs), which requires high algorithm timeliness, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm, namely, the multi-satellite mission planning (MSMP) algorithm, is proposed. The algorithm uses neural networks with an ‘encoder-decoder’ structure and designs a mechanism that enables each satellite to select requests in turn. These two designs allow the algorithm to achieve simultaneous scheduling of multiple satellites. After that, the MSMP uses a REINFORCE with Critic Baseline algorithm to optimize its selection strategy. Computational experiments show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the reasoning time by a factor of tens compared to the adaptive task assignment large neighborhood search (A-ALNS) algorithm, while being able to keep the revenue rate difference to A-ALNS below 5%.

Abstract:With the development of human space activities, the number of spacecraft in geostationary orbit (GEO) has increased dramatically. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), by the end of 2008, there were 1186 objects in GEO of which only 32% were controlled operational satellites [1]. In the GEO, there are also many malfunctioning or abandoned spacecraft and lots of space debris that need to be deorbited [2] orbiting alongside functioning spacecraft. It has become necessary to monitor and deorbit these uncontrolled spacecraft and space debris to afford a safe environment for operational spacecraft so that collisions can be avoided. To do this, several alternatives have been proposed by scholars and aerospace research institutions all over the world. Among the suggestions are the RObotic GEostationary orbit Restorer (ROGER) for orbital monitoring and deorbiting [3, 4], an ion beam shepherd for contactless space debris removal [5], electrodynamic tether deorbiting [6-8], deorbiting using solar radiation force [9-11], and space robots. A novel on-orbit servicing technology based on micro-satellite platform

Abstract:On-orbit servicing (OOS) is a part of an emerging category of future on-orbit activities which are critical for taking the next leap in the use of earth orbit, especially in geostationary orbit (GEO). The ability to repair or refuel satellites, construct new satellites in orbit, and even assemble large space facilities can help drive innovative uses of space. Combined with the rapid development of the micro-satellite technology, a novel micro-satellite swarm robot servicing system (MSRSS) is designed, which consists of one communication robot, two servicing robots (two robot arms), and two monitor robots. All the robots in the system are designed based on micro-satellite platform, and collaborated to execute monitoring/measuring, capture, maintenance, repair and other tasks, at the same time, some module satellite can be used as part of a satellite to replace the existing module. This new program can solve the disadvantage of a single large robot satellite, and micro-satellite based platform can reduce costs and improve the fast response. The use of micro-satellite in OOS includes two aspects: (1) the formation of micro-swarm robots in OOS instead of a single large space robot platform; (2) as part of the servicing object (such as U.S. Phoenix). Abstract:There is ever growing demand for satellite constellations that perform global positioning, remote sensing, earth-imaging and relay communication. In these highly prized orbits, there are many obsolete and abandoned satellites and components strewn posing ever-growing logistical challenges. This increased demand for satellite constellations pose challenges for space traffic management, where there is growing need to identify the risks probabilities and if possible mitigate them. These abandoned satellites and space debris maybe economically valuable orbital real-estate and resources that can be reused, repaired or upgraded for future use. On-orbit capture and servicing of a satellite requires satellite rendezvous, docking and repair, removal and replacement of components. Launching a big spacecraft that perform satellites servicing is one credible approach for servicing and maintaining next-generation constellations. By accessing abandoned satellites and space debris, there is an inherent heightened risk of damage to a servicing spacecraft. Under these scenarios, sending multiple, small-robots with each robot specialized in a specific task is a credible alternative, as the system is simple and cost-effective and where loss of one or more of robot does not end the mission. Eliminating the need for a large spacecraft or positioning the large spacecraft at safe distance to provide position, navigation and tracking support simplifies the system and enable the approach to be extensible with the latest ground-based sensing technology. In this work, we analyze the feasibility of sending multiple, decentralized robots that can work cooperatively to perform capture of the target satellite as first steps to on-orbit satellite servicing.
On-Orbit Servicing System Architectures for Proliferated Low-Earth-Orbit Constellations

Abstract:On-orbit servicing (OOS) presents new opportunities for refueling, inspection, repair, maintenance, and upgrade of spacecraft (s/c). OOS missions for s/c in a geostationary orbit (GEO) are currently underway. However, there are currently no plans for OOS of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) s/c, aside from technology demonstrations, because of their shorter design life and lower cost. Designing OOS systems for LEO constellations differs from that of GEO-based systems; this difference is attributed to LEO's proliferation of satellites, environmental effects (J2 nodal precession, drag), and different constellation patterns. Satellite constellations in LEO are becoming more distributed due to increased access, distributed risk, flexibility, and cost. OOS of s/c may enable the reduction of requirements on subsystems such as safety and the need for redundancy. These requirement reductions will enable lower risks, lower costs, and increased system resilience. This paper analyzes the benefits of OOS in proliferated LEO constellations. Several OOS system architectures are modeled in various scenarios, and we will evaluate the utility tradespace in which OOS is beneficial. OOS provides higher utility over the comparative alternative of using spare satellites in some scenarios. The utility of OOS provides even greater utility when accepting higher failure rates of satellites, which can be mitigated by an OOS system compared to the comparative alternative of orbital spares.

Abstract:There is growing demand for satellite swarms and constellations for global positioning, remote sensing and relay communication in higher LEO orbits. This will result in many obsolete, damaged and abandoned satellites that will remain on-orbit beyond 25 years. These abandoned satellites and space debris maybe economically valuable orbital real-estate and resources that can be reused, repaired or upgraded for future use. Space traffic management is critical to repair damaged satellites, divert satellites into warehouse orbits and effectively de-orbit satellites and space debris that are beyond repair and salvage. Current methods for on-orbit capture, servicing and repair require a large service satellite. However, by accessing abandoned satellites and space debris, there is an inherent heightened risk of damage to a servicing spacecraft. Sending multiple small-robots with each robot specialized in a specific task is a credible alternative, as the system is simple and cost-effective and where loss of one or more robots does not end the mission. In this work, we outline an end to end multirobot system to capture damaged and abandoned spacecraft for salvaging, repair and for de-orbiting. We analyze the feasibility of sending multiple, decentralized robots that can work cooperatively to perform capture of the target satellite as a first step, followed by crawling onto damage satellites to perform detailed mapping. After obtaining a detailed map of the satellite, the robots will proceed to either repair and replace or dismantle components for salvage operations. Finally, the remaining components will be packaged with a de-orbit device for accelerated de-orbit.

Optimal Ground Station Selection for Low-Earth Orbiting Satellites

Abstract:This paper presents a solution to the problem of optimal ground station selection for low-Earth orbiting (LEO) space missions that enables mission operators to precisely design their ground segment performance and costs. Space mission operators are increasingly turning to Ground-Station-as-a-Service (GSaaS) providers to supply the terrestrial communications segment to reduce costs and increase network size. However, this approach leads to a new challenge of selecting the optimal service providers and station locations for a given mission. We consider the problem of ground station selection as an optimization problem and present a general solution framework that allows mission designers to set their overall optimization objective and constrain key mission performance variables such as total data downlink, total mission cost, recurring operational cost, and maximum communications time-gap. We solve the problem using integer programming (IP). To address computational scaling challenges, we introduce a surrogate optimization approach where the optimal station selection is determined based on solving the problem over a reduced time domain. Two different IP formulations are evaluated using randomized selections of LEO satellites of varying constellation sizes. We consider the networks of the commercial GSaaS providers Atlas Space Operations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Ground Station, Azure Orbital Ground Station, Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT), Leaf Space, and Viasat Real-Time Earth. We compare our results against standard operational practices of integrating with one or two primary ground station providers.

Abstract:The Chinese experimental space system for on-orbit robotistic services (CESSORS) is to be developed by Shenzhen Space Technology Center. CESSORS consists of two satellites and a mounted robotic manipulator. In this paper, the design of the two satellites and the manipulator is described in detail, as well as the target detecting system and the ground teleoperation system. The planned missions include calibration of robot manipulator, teleoperation of the manipulator, coordinated control, on-orbit robotistic services, on-orbit target chasing and approaching, and flying around inspection. Abstract:This work proposes an adaptation of the facility location problem for the optimal placement of on-orbit servicing depots for satellite constellations in high-altitude orbit. The high-altitude regime, such as medium Earth orbit, is a unique dynamic environment where low-thrust propulsion systems can provide the necessary thrust to conduct plane-change maneuvers between the various orbital planes of the constellation. As such, on-orbit servicing architectures involving servicer spacecraft that conduct roundtrips between servicing depots and the client satellites of the constellation may be conceived. To this end, a new orbital facility location problem formulation is proposed based on binary linear programming, in which the costs of operating and allocating the facility(ies) to satellites are optimized in terms of the sum of the effective mass to low Earth orbit (EMLEO). The low-thrust transfers between the facilities and the clients are computed using a parallel implementation of a Lyapunov feedback controller. The total launch cost of the depot, along with its servicers, propellant, and payload, is taken into account as the cost to establish a given depot. The proposed approach is applied to designing an on-orbit servicing depot architecture for the Galileo and the GPS constellations.

Abstract:The orbit transfer strategy of geosynchronous spacecraft (GEO) is investigated in this paper. This method is suitable for the observation of GEO spacecraft before On-Orbit Servicing (OOS). Considering the computation, terminal constraint conditions (illumination condition, latitude deviation) and fuel consumption, Hohmann transfer and two-body mechanics model are adopted to simplify the mission process. In view of the difference between two-body mechanics model and High-Precision Orbit Propagator (HPOP) model, final time will be predicted precisely. By optimizing the final included angle of two spacecraft position vectors, the results got by two-body model can be used to HPOP model to simulate the real mission scenario. With the proposed method, complex perturbations can be ignored. Finally, the results of several numerical simulations demonstrate the validness of the proposed method on trajectory designing for observation of the spacecraft.

Abstract:Space robots play a significant role in on‐orbit servicing (OOS) missions, such as inspecting, capturing, refueling, and repairing satellites, assembling and maintaining large space infrastructure, and removing orbital debris. Over the past four decades, many space robot engineering applications and technology verifications for OOS have been accomplished. This article comprehensively reviews the advances by representative space robotic programs on space shuttles, outside/inside the International Space Station and the China Space Station, as well as on satellites, and the development trends of space robots are summarized. In addition, the primary key technologies and challenges are explored, including the following: 1) visual perception for noncooperative targets; 2) motion planning and control with a free‐floating base and flexibility; 3) multifunctional end‐effectors; 4) ground teleoperation with long time delays; and 5) high‐fidelity ground verification. Finally, the prospects for space robot future research are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a concept of formation space robotic system for on-orbit servicing (OOS) of noncooperative target in geostationary orbit (GEO). The formation space robotic system composes of an operation spacecraft and a monitor space robot. Given the relative motion among monitor spacecraft, operation space robot and non-cooperative target, an approach model of triangle formation is derived. Then, a novel formation approach scheme of relative navigation and guidance is proposed. It contains a distributed relative navigation algorithm based on multiple line-of-sights (LOS) and a multiple velocity impulses relative guidance law based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The semi-physical simulation results show that the far range rendezvous between formation space robotic system and noncooperative target can be realized autonomously by the proposed formation approach scheme. The formation space robotic system can improve the observability of angles-only relative navigation and the precision of two velocity impulses relative guidance to expand the ability of autonomous rendezvous.
Surrogate Assisted Multidisciplinary Design Optimization for an All-Electric Geo Satellite

Abstract:State-of-the-art all-electric geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites use electric thrusters to execute all propulsive duties, which significantly differ from the traditional all-chemical ones in orbit-raising, station-keeping, radiation damage protection, and power budget, etc. Design optimization task of an all-electric GEO satellite is therefore a complex multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) problem involving unique design considerations. However, solving the all-electric GEO satellite MDO problem faces big challenges in disciplinary modeling techniques and efficient optimization strategy. To address these challenges, we presents a surrogate assisted MDO framework consisting of several modules, i.e., MDO problem definition, multidisciplinary modeling, multidisciplinary analysis (MDA), and surrogate assisted optimizer. Based on the proposed framework, the all-electric GEO satellite MDO problem is formulated to minimize the total mass of the satellite system under a number of practical constraints. Then considerable efforts are spent on multidisciplinary modeling involving geosynchronous transfer, GEO station-keeping, power, thermal control, attitude control, and structure disciplines. Since orbit dynamics models and finite element structural model are computationally expensive, an adaptive response surface surrogate based optimizer is incorporated in the proposed framework to solve the satellite MDO problem with moderate computational cost, where a response surface surrogate is gradually refined to represent the computationally expensive MDA process. After optimization, the total mass of the studied GEO satellite is decreased by 185.3 kg (i.e., 7.3% of the total mass). Finally, the optimal design is further discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework to cope with the all-electric GEO satellite system design optimization problems. This proposed surrogate assisted MDO framework can also provide valuable references for other all -electric spacecraft system design.

Abstract:At present in near-Earth space, there are more than two thousand operating spacecraft and more than five thousand non-functioning satellites, which have failed or run out of fuel. The last ones are not only satellites that do not carry out their functions but are also space debris. And launching new satellites to replace the failed ones is an expensive process. Therefore, the concept of a serviced space and the development of service satellites to extend the life of existing spacecraft are becoming expedient. On-orbit satellite servicing tasks can include inspection of the target satellite, replacement of failed units and repair work, correction of the satellite orbit, or putting into a disposal orbit, refueling satellites. The work reviewed service satellites and the space experiments carried out, presented the main service stages, analyzed the operations conducted during the experiments, and identified the key critical service technologies.
