Magnetically tunable optical bound states in the continuum with arbitrary polarization and intrinsic chirality

Abstract:Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are exotic localized eigenstates embedded in the continuum spectrum and topological polarization singularity in momentum space, have attracted great attentions in both fundamental and applied physics. Here, based on magneto-optical photonic crystal slab placed in external magnetic fields to break the time-reversal symmetry, we theoretically demonstrate magnetically tunable BICs with arbitrary polarization covering the entire Poincaré sphere and efficient off-{\Gamma} chiral emission of circularly polarized states. More interestingly, by further breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of the magneto-optical photonic crystal slab to generate a pair of circularly polarized states (C point) spawning from the eliminated BICs and tuning the external magnetic field strength to move one C point to the {\Gamma} point, one at-{\Gamma} intrinsic chiral BICs with near-unity circular dichroism exceeding 0.99 and a high quality factor of 46000 owning to the preserved out-of-plane mirror symmetry can be observed. These findings may lead to a plethora of potential applications in chiral-optical effects, structured light, and tunable optical devices.

Abstract:Avoided crossing of resonances and merging multiple bound states in the continuum (BICs) are parallel means for tailoring the physical properties of BICs. Herein, we introduce a new concept of super quasi-BIC for photonic crystal (PhC) systems where its quality ($Q$) factor is boosted in both parametric and momentum spaces. A super quasi-BIC with substantial enhancement of $Q$ factor can be achieved in a finite PhC by combining avoiding crossing of two symmetry protected (SP) quasi-BICs in parametric space and merging BICs in momentum space simultaneously. More importantly, analytical theory shows that the proposed mechanism results in the transition of asymptotic behavior of the $Q$ factor over the numbers of resonators from $N^2$ to exclusive $N^3$ for SP-BICs, which is of vital importance for realizing quasi-BICs in a compact PhC. Microwave experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. Our results provide a paradigm shift for manipulating the physical properties quasi-BICs in finite PhC structures, which would facilitate various applications, including but not limited to low threshold lasing, wireless power transfer and high figure of merit sensing etc.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are confined optical modes exhibiting infinite quality factors and carrying topological polarization configurations in momentum space, have recently sparked significant interest across both fundamental and applied physics.} Here we show that breaking time-reversal symmetry by external magnetic field enables a new form of chiral BICs with spin-orbit locking. Applying a magnetic field to a magneto-optical photonic crystal slab lifts doubly degenerate BICs into a pair of chiral BICs carrying opposite pseudo-spins and orbital angular momenta. Multipole analysis verifies the non-zero angular momenta and reveals the spin-orbital-locking behaviors. In momentum space, we observe ultrahigh quality factors and near-circular polarization surrounding chiral BICs, enabling potential applications in spin-selective nanophotonics. Compared to conventional BICs, the magnetically-induced chiral BICs revealed here exhibit distinct properties and origins, significantly advancing the topological photonics of BICs by incorporating broken time-reversal symmetry.

Abstract:Abstract Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized states despite in a radiation continuum, rendering the ultra-high quality factor for enhanced light–matter interactions and supporting exotic topological properties. So far, most of studied BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs are only vertically localized, i.e. allowing propagations in the plane of slab therein but forbidding radiations, and the density of optical states (DOS) at their frequencies is limited due to the steep dispersion characteristics. Here, we report a BIC existing on a flatband of symmetry-broken PhC slab. The flatband, associated with largely reduced group velocity, significantly sharpens the DOS at the frequency of BIC, which can be realized via finely controlling broken vertical symmetry in the PhC slab. The effect of broken symmetry is revealed in a simple effective Hamiltonian near the second-order Γ point of such system. Our results show the simultaneous engineering of dispersion and leaky characteristics of modes, offering new opportunities to boost light–matter interactions and to enhance the performance of photonic devices.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide an important way for creating photonic devices reliant upon optical modes with high Q-factors. However, current experimental implementations of BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs only possess a certain polarization, which fundamentally restricts their use to surface-enhanced applications assisted by scalar-polarized near fields. In this work, vector BICs in PhC slabs are theoretically designed and experimentally realized. In theory, the symmetry-protected vector BICs can be constructed by tuning geometric parameters of the PhC slab, where the coalescence of eigenfrequencies for a pair of TE- and TM-like modes appears. It is found that the homogeneous superchiral fields with three orders of magnitude larger than circular polarized lights can be achieved, assisted by vector quasi-BICs. Furthermore, Si3N4 PhC slabs are experimentally fabricated and their band structures are measured. It is shown that a pair of symmetry-protected BICs with TE- and TM-like polarizations can coalesce with each other at a suitable value for the diameter of array holes, indicating the realization of vector BICs. This work can possess important applications in the field of ultrasensitive detections of molecular chirality.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have garnered considerable attention recently for their unique capacity to confine electromagnetic waves within an open or non-Hermitian system. Utilizing a variety of light confinement mechanisms, nanostructures can achieve ultra-high quality factors and intense field localization with BIC, offering advantages such as long-living resonance modes, adaptable light control, and enhanced light-matter interactions, paving the way for innovative developments in photonics. This review outlines novel functionality and performance enhancements by synergizing optical BIC with diverse nanostructures, delivering an in-depth analysis of BIC designs in gratings, photonic crystals, waveguides, and metasurfaces. Additionally, we showcase the latest advancements of BIC in 2D material platforms and suggest potential trajectories for future research.

Janus Bound States in the Continuum with Asymmetric Topological Charges and Intrinsic Chirality

Abstract:We propose a novel topological defect called Janus bound states in the continuum (BICs), featuring asymmetric topological charges in upward and downward radiation channels. Our approach involves a photonic crystal slab (PCS) that initially exhibits both out-of-plane and in-plane mirror symmetry, and this PCS possesses one BIC at the $\Gamma$ point and two BICs off the $\Gamma$ point. By introducing perturbations that break the out-of-plane mirror symmetry, the two off-$\Gamma$ BICs decompose into four circularly polarized states (C points) with identical topological charges. Then, we selectively manipulate the four C points associated with downward radiation channel to converge at the at-$\Gamma$ BIC, forming a Janus BIC with Janus topological charges. By further introducing in-plane mirror symmetry perturbation, we can bring two of the C points with the same handedness and identical topological charges for upward radiation to merge into the Janus BIC. This process results in a Janus chiral BIC which exhibits large intrinsic chirality and an infinite Q factor. Janus BICs can induce distinct Pancharatnam-Berry phase singularities in momentum space for different incident channels, providing a new approach to control optical angular momentum. Janus chiral BICs hold promise in enhancing direction-dependent and spin-dependent asymmetric light-matter interaction, opening new pathways for improving chirality-dependent operation for on-chip devices.

Abstract:We propose a method to achieve symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) while maintaining the C4v structural symmetry, utilizing a periodically arranged array of topological Dirac semimetals (TDS) squares. By numerically controlling the metamaterial using four identical square films of TDS, we can manipulate both the resonance position and number. This phenomenon arises due to the inherent permittivity asymmetry of the metamaterial, causing the creation of quasi-BICs. When all four squares have the same Fermi energy, a BIC is formed. Different Fermi energies are assigned to the four squares, resulting in quasi-BICs with narrow resonances. The electric analysis in the x-y plane identified the dominant contributors as the electric quadrupole and octupole. Our findings provide a direct route to achieve high-quality (high-Q) quasi-BICs without any introduction of symmetry-breaking elements, such as transverse, in-plane, and out-of-plane components in the structure, or the use of oblique incidences within a non-breaking system.

Abstract:Sharp electromagnetic resonances play an essential role in physics in general and optics in particular. The last decades have witnessed the successful developments of high-quality (Q) resonances in microcavities operating below the light line, which however is fundamentally challenging to access from free space. Alternatively, metasurface-based bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer a complementary solution of creating high-Q resonances in devices operating above the light line, yet the experimentally demonstrated Q factors under normal excitations are still limited. Here, we present the realizations of quasi-BIC under normal excitation with a record Q factor up to 18 511 by engineering the symmetry properties and the number of the unit cells in all-dielectric metasurface platforms. The high-Q quasi-BICs exhibit exceptionally high conversion efficiency for the third harmonic generation and even enable the second harmonic generation in Si metasurfaces. Such ultrasharp resonances achieved in this work may immediately boost the performances of BICs in a plethora of fundamental research and device applications, e.g., cavity QED, biosensing, nanolasing, and quantum light generations.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) present a unique solution for eliminating radiation loss. So far, most reported BICs are observed in transmission spectra, with only a few exceptions being in reflection spectra. The correlation between reflection BICs (r-BICs) and transmission BICs (t-BICs) remains unclear. Here, we report the presence of both r-BICs and t-BICs in a three-mode cavity magnonics. We develop a generalized framework of non-Hermitian scattering Hamiltonians to explain the observed bidirectional r-BICs and unidirectional t-BICs. In addition, we find the emergence of an ideal isolation point in the complex frequency plane, where the isolation direction can be switched by fine frequency detuning, thanks to chiral symmetry protection. Our results demonstrate the potential of cavity magnonics and also extend the conventional BICs theory through the application of a more generalized effective Hamiltonians theory. This work offers an alternative idea for designing functional devices in general wave optics.

Abstract:Chiroptical resonances inspired by bound states in the continuum (BICs) open a new, to the best of our knowledge, avenue to enhance chiral light-matter interaction. Symmetry breaking is the widely employed way, wherein the circularly polarized states (CPSs) arise from BIC splitting. Here, we utilize a far-field interference mechanism to create ultrahigh-Q (typically, 2.36 × 106) chiroptical resonance beyond BIC splitting, in which CPSs coexist with BICs in the momentum space. Accordingly, the spin-selective absorption with ultranarrow linewidth is achieved at the CPS points, which can be regulated by monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). In addition, the chiral response of our scheme exhibits the incident-direction robustness and flexible tunability. Our findings may facilitate potential applications in light manipulation, spin-valley interaction, and chiral sensing.
